Audio T Verdict
The Rega Aethos is a powerful integrated amplifier for systems where sound quality, control and long-term upgrade potential matter more than built-in streaming or digital features.
Its 125W-per-channel dual-mono design provides the current and authority required to control a wide range of high-performance loudspeakers, while the fully discrete Class A preamplifier circuit helps preserve detail, timing and stereo focus.
The Aethos does not contain a phono stage or DAC. This is intentional, allowing owners to choose external source components that suit their turntable, cartridge, streamer and wider system. At this level, we strongly recommend an in-store or home demonstration with your preferred loudspeakers.
Rega Aethos Integrated Stereo Amplifier
The Rega Aethos is a high-performance analogue integrated amplifier housed within a substantial custom-designed case.
It delivers 125W per channel into 8 ohms or 156W per channel into 6 ohms, with both channels driven. This provides the power and control required for demanding musical passages and a broad selection of standmount and floorstanding loudspeakers.
Rega has concentrated the design around analogue performance. The Aethos includes five standard line inputs, a separate record input and output, a preamplifier output, Direct input and headphone connection.
It does not include a built-in phono stage, digital-to-analogue converter, streaming platform or Bluetooth connection.
Powerful Dual-Mono Design
The Aethos uses a dual-mono amplifier layout to improve separation between the left and right channels.
A custom-wound toroidal transformer supplies the amplifier, with regulated power supplies used for the sensitive amplification and driver stages.
Keeping the two channels carefully separated helps preserve stereo imaging and reduces unwanted interaction when the amplifier is working hard.
- 125W RMS per channel into 8 ohms
- 156W RMS per channel into 6 ohms
- Both channels driven during rated output testing
- Dual-mono circuit architecture
- Custom-wound toroidal transformer
- Regulated supplies for sensitive amplification and driver stages
High-Current Power Amplifier
The output stage uses four 160W, 16A Sanken output transistors per channel.
These devices are arranged to provide the current delivery required to maintain control during demanding musical peaks and when driving more difficult loudspeaker loads.
The power amplifier is DC coupled and uses protective monitoring to guard against excessive direct current reaching the loudspeakers.
- Four high-current Sanken output transistors per channel
- Power amplifier regulated supply
- High-current output stage
- Thermal protection
- Short-circuit protection outside the audio signal path
- DC protection for the connected loudspeakers
Fully Discrete Class A Preamplifier
The Aethos preamplifier stage uses fully discrete Class A circuitry throughout.
Rega has developed the line amplifier from design principles used in earlier Elex and Elicit amplifiers, with a fully discrete FET-based circuit and carefully selected components.
Polypropylene capacitors are used throughout the signal path, while K-Power reservoir capacitors provide energy storage for the amplifiers power supply.
- Fully discrete Class A preamplifier circuitry
- Discrete FET-based line amplifier
- Polypropylene capacitors throughout the signal path
- K-Power reservoir capacitors
- Components selected for channel consistency and low noise
Precision Volume Control
The motorised volume control can be operated from the front panel or using the supplied Solaris system remote control.
The amplifier has been designed to provide stable channel balance and predictable level adjustment across its useful operating range.
When the remote control is used, the physical volume knob moves to reflect the selected level.
Five Analogue Line Inputs
Five standard RCA line inputs are provided for analogue source components.
These can be used with a streamer, CD player, tuner, DAC, cassette deck or any other source with a conventional line-level analogue output.
Suitable Sources
- Network streamer with analogue output
- CD player
- External DAC
- Tuner
- Cassette or reel-to-reel deck
- External phono stage
Not Built In
- Moving magnet phono stage
- Moving coil phono stage
- Digital-to-analogue converter
- Network streaming
- Bluetooth
- HDMI or optical input
Separate Record Input and Output
The Aethos includes a separate record input and fixed-level record output for use with recording equipment.
The recording section operates independently from the five main line inputs, allowing the selected source to be monitored without interrupting the recording signal.
A parallel Record Output Link is also provided for equipment requiring a fixed-level signal that is unaffected by the main volume control.
Preamplifier Output
A variable preamplifier output allows the Aethos to be connected to additional power amplifiers, active subwoofers or other suitable equipment.
The preamplifier output follows the main volume control and uses conventional RCA connections.
This provides flexibility for future system expansion without requiring the complete amplifier to be replaced.
Direct Input for Home Cinema Integration
The Direct input routes the incoming signal straight to the power amplifier and bypasses the Aethos volume control.
It is intended for use with an AV processor, home cinema receiver or external preamplifier that provides its own controlled front-channel output.
This allows the Aethos and its connected loudspeakers to form the front left and right channels of a home cinema system while remaining available as a high-quality two-channel amplifier for music.
Important: never connect a conventional fixed-level source such as a CD player or streamer directly to the Direct input. The Aethos volume control is bypassed and the loudspeakers could immediately be driven at maximum level.
Dedicated Headphone Output
A full-size 6.35mm headphone socket is positioned on the front panel.
The output has been designed to work with standard Hi-Fi headphones across a wide range of impedances.
Inserting a headphone plug automatically mutes the loudspeaker output through the amplifiers output relay. Rega recommends reducing the volume before connecting headphones.
Solaris System Remote Control
The Aethos is supplied with Regas Solaris system remote control and batteries.
The handset controls volume, input selection, mute, record selection and the Direct input. It can also operate compatible functions on other remote-controlled Rega products.
Choosing a Phono Stage
The Aethos does not include an internal phono stage. A turntable must be connected through a separate phono stage selected to suit the cartridge.
Moving Magnet Cartridges
A moving magnet cartridge requires an external moving magnet phono stage.
Suitable options include the
Rega Fono MM Mk5
or another high-quality moving magnet design matched to the cartridge.
Moving Coil Cartridges
A low-output moving coil cartridge requires a compatible moving coil phono stage.
For reference Rega systems, the
Rega Aura Reference MC
is a natural partner.
Turntable and Source Matching
Vinyl Systems
The Aethos has sufficient transparency and control to justify use with turntables such as the
Rega Planar 8
and
Rega Planar 10
.
The cartridge and external phono stage should be selected together to provide the correct gain and loading.
Digital Systems
A streamer, CD transport or television cannot connect digitally to the Aethos.
The source must provide an analogue output or be connected through a suitable external DAC.
Speaker Matching
The Aethos is intended for loudspeakers with a nominal impedance between 4 and 16 ohms.
Its high output and current delivery allow it to work with a broad range of standmount and floorstanding designs, but amplifier power alone does not guarantee the best system match.
Loudspeaker sensitivity, impedance behaviour, room size and preferred listening level should all be considered. Audio T can arrange comparative demonstrations using suitable loudspeakers and, where appropriate, a home demonstration.

Installation and Ventilation
The substantial heatsinks positioned along both sides of the amplifier dissipate heat from the power stage.
The Aethos should be placed on a strong, level shelf with adequate open space around both side panels. Other products must not be stacked on top of it.
The heatsinks can become hot during extended use, particularly at high volume or with lower-impedance loudspeakers. The amplifier should not be placed on carpet, bedding or another soft surface that could restrict airflow.
Sensitive phono stages and turntables should also be positioned away from the Aethos and its power transformer where possible.

The Aethos delivers 125W RMS per channel into 8 ohms or 156W RMS per channel into 6 ohms, with both channels driven.
Does the Rega Aethos include a phono stage?
No. A turntable must be connected through a separate moving magnet or moving coil phono stage chosen to suit the cartridge.
Does it include a DAC or digital inputs?
No. The five main inputs are analogue line-level RCA connections. A digital source requires its own analogue output or a separate DAC.
Does the Aethos have streaming or Bluetooth?
No. A separate network streamer or Bluetooth receiver with an analogue output is required.
How many inputs does it have?
The Aethos has five standard line inputs, plus a separate record input. It also includes a Direct input that bypasses the volume control.
What is the Direct input for?
The Direct input allows an AV processor, home cinema receiver or external preamplifier to control the Aethos power amplifier directly. It bypasses the Aethos volume control.
Can I connect a CD player directly to the Direct input?
No. A fixed-level source connected to the Direct input could drive the amplifier and loudspeakers at maximum output. Use one of the five standard line inputs instead.
How is the Direct input selected?
The Direct input is activated using the supplied Solaris remote control. An indicator on the front panel confirms when it is active.
Can the Aethos be used in a home cinema system?
Yes. Its Direct input allows it to power the front left and right loudspeakers while an AV receiver or processor controls the overall system volume.
Does it include a headphone output?
Yes. A full-size 6.35mm headphone socket is provided on the front panel. Connecting headphones automatically mutes the loudspeaker output.
