Audio T Verdict
The Rega Planar 8 is a substantial step beyond the more conventional Planar models, bringing Rega's skeletal plinth design, RB880 tonearm and triple-layer glass platter into a compact, exceptionally lightweight turntable.
Inspired by engineering developed for the Naiad project, the Planar 8 is designed to reduce unwanted mass and stored energy while maintaining rigidity around the tonearm and central bearing.
It is available in Black or White and can be ordered without a cartridge, or with a factory-fitted Rega Nd7, Nd9, Ania Pro or Apheta 3. The two moving magnet options are straightforward to accommodate, while the Ania Pro and Apheta 3 require a compatible moving coil phono stage.
Rega Planar 8 Turntable
The Rega Planar 8 was developed to capture many of the principles explored during the creation of Rega's Naiad test-bed turntable in a more attainable production model.
Rather than simply updating the earlier RP8, Rega redesigned the plinth, tonearm, platter, central bearing, motor mounting and power supply around its low-mass and high-rigidity philosophy.
The Planar 8 is supplied with the precision RB880 tonearm, a custom-matched Neo Mk2 power supply, a removable dustcover and Rega's Reference EBLT drive-belt system.
Ultra-Lightweight Skeletal Plinth
The Planar 8 uses a skeletal plinth built around a Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core, a lightweight material originally developed for aerospace applications.
The foam core is enclosed between thin layers of high-pressure laminate. This creates an extremely light but rigid platform that helps prevent unwanted vibration and stored energy from interfering with the cartridge.
The skeletal plinth is approximately 30 per cent lighter than the original RP8 plinth while offering increased rigidity.
Double Brace Technology
Rega's Double Brace Technology reinforces the area between the tonearm mounting and the central hub bearing.
Phenolic resin braces are fitted above and below the Tancast 8 plinth to form a lightweight stressed-beam structure. This helps maintain accurate alignment between the tonearm and platter without adding unnecessary mass across the rest of the turntable.
Concentrating rigidity around these critical mounting points helps reduce microscopic movement and unwanted resonance.
RB880 Precision Tonearm
The Planar 8 is fitted with Rega's RB880 tonearm, which uses an aluminium and stainless-steel vertical bearing assembly designed to improve rigidity and stability.
Its preloaded, zero-tolerance bearing assembly is adjusted to less than one thousandth of a millimetre, allowing extremely low-friction movement without unwanted bearing play.
- Advanced preloaded bearing assembly
- Aluminium and stainless-steel vertical bearing housing
- Low-mass, hand-finished aluminium arm tube
- Slim stainless-steel balance weight
- Rega three-point cartridge mounting system
- Low-capacitance tonearm cable
- High-quality locking phono plugs
The slimmer balance weight provides additional adjustment room for compatible cartridges, while the low-capacitance cable helps preserve the delicate signal produced by the cartridge.
Triple-Layer Glass Platter
Rega developed the Planar 8's triple-layer laminated glass platter with a specialist British glass engineering company.
It is constructed from two different types of high-quality glass, with additional mass concentrated around the outer edge.
This creates a flywheel effect that helps maintain stable rotational speed while keeping the inner area relatively light to reduce unnecessary loading on the central bearing.
Reference EBLT Drive-Belt System
The Planar 8 uses Rega's Reference EBLT drive-belt technology, developed to improve dimensional accuracy, elasticity and long-term consistency.
The belts are produced using highly accurate Rega-designed tooling to create a consistent connection between the motor pulley and aluminium sub-platter.
Low-Mass Hub Bearing Assembly
A single-piece machined aluminium sub-platter and hardened tool-steel spindle run inside a custom brass central bearing housing.
The low-mass bearing assembly is mounted within the skeletal plinth to minimise the transfer and storage of unwanted energy around the platter.
24V Low-Noise Motor
The Planar 8 uses a 24V synchronous low-vibration motor mounted from beneath the skeletal plinth.
This mounting method was developed from Rega's work on the Naiad and is designed to hold the drive pulley securely while reducing stress on the motor body.
Each motor is individually hand-tuned and matched to its own Neo Mk2 power supply before the turntable leaves the factory.
Neo Mk2 Power Supply
The custom-matched Neo Mk2 external power supply is included with every Planar 8 finish and cartridge option.
A high-stability crystal generator and digital signal processing are used to create the waveform required to control the motor accurately.
- Electronic selection between 33? and 45 rpm
- Digital signal processing motor control
- High-stability crystal reference
- User-adjustable fine speed control
- Advanced motor vibration reduction
- Individually matched motor and power supply

Frequently Asked Questions
What Rega Planar 8 options are available?
The Planar 8 is available in Black or White. Each finish can be ordered without a cartridge, with an Nd7, Nd9, Ania Pro or Apheta 3.
Does the Rega Planar 8 include a cartridge?
That depends on the selected option. The cartridge-free version does not include a cartridge. The Nd7, Nd9, Ania Pro and Apheta 3 versions include the selected cartridge factory-fitted and aligned.
What is included with the cartridge-free version?
The cartridge-free Planar 8 includes the turntable, RB880 tonearm, triple-layer glass platter, removable dustcover and custom-matched Neo Mk2 power supply.
What is the difference between the Nd7 and Nd9?
Both are moving magnet cartridges with fine-line nude diamond styli. The Nd9 is Rega's reference moving magnet model and adds a lighter, stiffer boron rod cantilever.
What is the difference between the Ania Pro and Apheta 3?
Both are low-output moving coil cartridges. The Ania Pro uses a highly rigid moulded PPS body and Vital-profile stylus, while the Apheta 3 uses a one-piece aluminium body and fine-line stylus for a further increase in performance.
Are the cartridges fitted at the factory?
Yes. When the Nd7, Nd9, Ania Pro or Apheta 3 option is selected, the cartridge is factory-fitted and aligned to the RB880 tonearm.
Can I fit a different cartridge?
Yes. The cartridge-free version allows a suitable alternative cartridge to be installed. Its weight, height, output and compatibility with the RB880 tonearm should be checked before purchase.
Which phono input do the Nd7 and Nd9 require?
The Nd7 and Nd9 require a moving magnet phono input. This may be built into your amplifier or provided by a separate moving magnet phono stage.
Which phono stage do the Ania Pro and Apheta 3 require?
Both cartridges require a compatible low-output moving coil phono stage. They should not be connected directly to a standard moving magnet input.
Does the Planar 8 have a built-in phono stage?
No. A separate phono stage or an amplifier with the correct type of phono input is required.
Is the Neo Mk2 power supply included?
