Audio T Verdict
The Michell TecnoDec brings several of the company’s established turntable technologies into a simpler, unsuspended design.
Its impedance-matched platter, inverted oil-circulating bearing and physically separate motor provide a carefully controlled foundation for vinyl playback, while Sorbothane feet help isolate the deck from vibration in the supporting surface.
This no-arm version also gives you the freedom to choose a compatible tonearm, cartridge and phono stage. Professionally configured, the TecnoDec can form the heart of a highly capable and upgradeable vinyl system.
Michell TecnoDec Turntable
The Michell TecnoDec is the entry point into Michell’s reference turntable range. It is an unsuspended belt-drive design that shares several engineering principles with the company’s larger turntables.
Rather than mounting the motor directly to the turntable chassis, Michell places it in a separate freestanding enclosure. The platter rotates on an inverted oil-circulating bearing, while an impedance-matched platter and Sorbothane isolation help control unwanted vibration.
Tonearm and Cartridge Not Included
This version of the TecnoDec is supplied without a tonearm or cartridge.
A compatible tonearm, cartridge and phono stage must be selected separately. Audio T can configure, assemble and professionally set up the complete turntable system.
Rigid, Unsuspended Design
The TecnoDec uses a rigid, unsuspended construction rather than a spring-mounted sub-chassis.
This makes the turntable comparatively straightforward to install, while allowing its bearing, platter and tonearm to operate from a stable mechanical structure.
As with any high-quality turntable, it should be placed on a strong, level surface away from excessive footfall and loudspeaker vibration.
Sorbothane Isolation
Pure Sorbothane inserts are incorporated into the TecnoDec’s feet to help isolate the turntable from structural vibration travelling through the supporting furniture.
This additional damping is particularly useful where the turntable is installed on a conventional equipment rack or shared furniture.
For installations that need further isolation, the Michell Iso Turntable Isolation Base is officially compatible with the TecnoDec.
Impedance-Matched Platter
Michell selects the platter material for its vibration-damping properties and its mechanical similarity to vinyl.
This creates a neutral supporting surface for the record and helps control unwanted energy around the platter and stylus.
The record sits directly on the platter, avoiding the need for a conventional felt or rubber mat.
Freestanding Motor Unit
The TecnoDec motor is housed separately from the turntable chassis in an enclosure machined from a solid billet of aircraft-grade aluminium.
During playback, the drive belt is the only mechanical connection between the motor unit and the platter. This separation is designed to reduce the transfer of motor vibration to the bearing, tonearm and cartridge.
Correct motor positioning and belt alignment are important during installation.
Inverted Oil-Circulating Bearing
The TecnoDec uses Michell’s inverted main-bearing design, placing the point of rotation towards the top of the assembly.
A modified Archimedean screw machined into the bearing draws oil from a reservoir at its base towards the thrust ball as the platter rotates. The lubricant then returns through a separate passage.
This continuous oil circulation helps lubricate the precision bearing surfaces and supports smooth, quiet platter rotation.
Choosing a Tonearm
The no-arm TecnoDec can be configured around a suitable tonearm and cartridge combination.
The Michell T2 Tonearm is available only when ordering a new TecnoDec. Michell specifies an 11g effective mass and 222mm mounting distance for the T2.
A tonearm should be selected with consideration for:
- The correct mounting arrangement
- Cartridge weight and compliance
- Counterweight adjustment range
- Tracking-force requirements
- Cartridge alignment and tonearm height
- Phono cable and grounding requirements
Choosing a Cartridge and Phono Stage
The cartridge must be mechanically compatible with the chosen tonearm and electrically matched to the phono stage.
A moving magnet cartridge requires a suitable MM phono input, while a low-output moving coil cartridge requires an MC phono stage with appropriate gain and loading.
The Michell Apollo Phono Stage with Muse Power Supply supports both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges.
Professional Setup Recommended
Accurate tonearm installation, cartridge alignment, tracking force and anti-skate adjustment are essential for reliable tracking and record care.
Audio T can assemble and configure the complete TecnoDec system before collection or delivery.
Michell HR Power Supply Upgrade
The TecnoDec’s compatible DC motor can be upgraded with the Michell HR Power Supply.
The HR provides a low-noise electronic supply with Michell’s Never-Connected circuitry and user-adjustable speed control.
It connects to the existing compatible motor lead, providing an upgrade path without replacing the complete turntable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a tonearm included with the TecnoDec?
No. This version is supplied without a tonearm.
Is a cartridge included?
No. A compatible cartridge must be selected separately.
Is the TecnoDec a suspended turntable?
No. It uses a rigid, unsuspended design with Sorbothane isolation in its feet.
Is the motor attached to the turntable chassis?
No. The motor is housed in a separate freestanding aluminium unit and drives the platter through the belt.
What is an impedance-matched platter?
Michell selects a platter material with damping characteristics and mechanical properties similar to vinyl, providing a neutral supporting surface for the record.
What tonearm can be fitted?
The Michell T2 is available when ordering a new TecnoDec. Other options require confirmation of mounting and cartridge compatibility.
Does the TecnoDec include a phono stage?
No. A suitable external phono stage or amplifier phono input is required.
Can the power supply be upgraded?
Yes. The compatible DC motor can be partnered with the Michell HR Power Supply.
Can the TecnoDec use the Michell Iso Base?
Yes. Michell officially lists the TecnoDec as compatible with its Iso isolation platform.
What are its dimensions and weight?
Michell specifies dimensions of 49cm wide, 31cm deep and 8.5cm high, with a weight of 4.6kg.
