Audio T Verdict
The Michell HR Power Supply is a straightforward performance upgrade for compatible DC-motor Michell turntables.
By providing a more stable, low-noise supply to the motor, the HR is designed to support consistent platter rotation and reduce electrical interference within the turntable drive system.
Installation is simple, while the rear-panel speed adjustment allows the turntable's running speed to be set accurately. For owners of a compatible TecnoDec, GyroDec or Gyro SE, it offers a practical upgrade without replacing the motor or turntable.
Michell HR Turntable Power Supply
The Michell HR is a dedicated low-noise power supply for the DC motors used by compatible Michell belt-drive turntables.
It replaces the turntable's existing external motor supply and connects directly to the motor lead. An IEC mains cable is supplied.
Compatible Michell Turntables
Michell specifies the HR Power Supply for DC-motor versions of:
Check Motor Compatibility Before Ordering
The HR is intended for compatible Michell DC motors. Older Michell turntables may use a different motor or power-supply system.
It should not be assumed to work with the Orbe, Reference Hydraulic, the latest Michell Gyro or another turntable unless compatibility has been confirmed by Michell or Audio T.
Low-Noise Motor Power
A turntable motor relies on its power supply to maintain consistent operation. Variations or unwanted electrical noise within that supply can affect the motor drive system.
The HR is designed to provide a stable electronic power source for the compatible Michell DC motor, supporting smooth and consistent platter rotation.
Never-Connected Circuitry
The HR incorporates Michell's Never-Connected power-supply circuit as part of its low-noise design.
This circuitry is used to improve the stability of the power delivered to the motor and limit unwanted noise entering through the mains supply.
Adjustable Turntable Speed
A user-adjustable speed control is located on the rear panel of the HR.
This allows the turntable's speed to be checked and finely adjusted using an appropriate turntable speed-measurement tool.
Speed Adjustment
Allow the turntable to reach normal operating speed before making adjustments. Use a suitable strobe disc or accurate speed-measurement device and make only small changes.
Audio T can assist with checking and setting the turntable speed where required.
Simple Installation
The HR is designed as a direct external power-supply upgrade for compatible turntables.
- Switch off the turntable and disconnect the existing supply from the mains.
- Unplug the motor lead from the existing power supply.
- Connect the motor lead to the Michell HR.
- Connect the supplied IEC mains cable.
- Switch on the system and check the platter speed.
Switch Off Before Connecting
Disconnect the power before changing the motor connection. Do not connect or disconnect the motor lead while the HR is switched on.
Black Acrylic Enclosure
The Michell HR is currently available only with a black acrylic enclosure.
Its compact external design allows it to be positioned away from the turntable while remaining accessible for power and speed adjustment.
Placement
Position the HR on a stable surface with sufficient space for its mains and motor cables.
Avoid placing it:
- Directly beneath the turntable cartridge or tonearm
- Where cables are stretched or tightly bent
- Near excessive heat or moisture
- Where ventilation is obstructed
- Where it may be accidentally switched off or disconnected

Frequently Asked Questions
Which turntables are compatible with the Michell HR?
Michell specifies it for DC-motor TecnoDec, GyroDec and Gyro SE turntables.
Will it work with an older GyroDec?
It depends on the motor fitted. Older turntables should be checked to confirm that they use the compatible Michell DC motor.
Is it compatible with the Michell Orbe?
Michell does not list the Orbe among the HR's compatible models. Confirm the correct power supply before ordering.
Is it compatible with the latest Michell Gyro?
The latest Gyro uses its own redesigned motor and power-supply system. The HR should not be ordered for it unless compatibility is specifically confirmed.
Does the HR replace the turntable motor?
No. It connects to the existing compatible DC motor.
Can the turntable speed be adjusted?
Yes. A user-adjustable speed control is provided on the rear panel.
Is installation complicated?
No. The existing motor lead is unplugged from the original supply and connected to the HR.
Is a mains cable included?
Yes. An IEC mains cable is supplied.
Which colour is available?
The HR is currently available only in a black acrylic enclosure.
Can Audio T check compatibility?
Yes. Contact your local Audio T store with the turntable model and, where possible, its approximate age or motor details.
