The MC X20 looks like a modest step above the X10 on paper, but the change to a Nude Elliptical stylus is an important one. Removing the additional mounting shank used by a conventional bonded stylus reduces moving mass right at the point where the cartridge is trying to follow incredibly small changes in the record groove.
What we particularly like is that Ortofon hasn't changed the rest of the formula to get you there. You still get the pure silver coils, new magnetic system, carefully developed suspension and rigid stainless-steel honeycomb structure found across the MC X range.
At 0.4mV, this is a genuine low-output moving coil cartridge and needs a suitable MC phono stage. Partner it properly and the X20 makes a convincing step into more revealing vinyl playback without immediately moving to the more demanding Fine Line, Shibata or Micro Ridge styli further up the series.
Ortofon MC X20
The Ortofon MC X20 is a low-output moving coil cartridge designed to reveal greater depth, definition and fine musical detail through the use of a Nude Elliptical diamond stylus.
It builds on the MC X10 with a lower-mass stylus assembly while retaining the core MC X technologies, including high-purity silver coils, Ortofon's optimised magnetic system, custom-developed damping and a rigid MIM stainless-steel honeycomb structure.

The Next Step in the MC X Series
The MC X20 sits immediately above the MC X10 in Ortofon's moving coil range.
The fundamental generator and body technologies remain closely related, but the X20 replaces the X10's Elliptical diamond with a Nude Elliptical stylus.
That seemingly small change affects the mass of the part actually following the groove and is one of the most important reasons to consider the X20 over the entry model.
Nude Elliptical Stylus
The MC X20 uses a Nude Elliptical diamond with stylus radii of r/R 8/18µm.
Unlike a conventional bonded stylus, where a small diamond tip is attached to a separate shank, a nude stylus is formed directly from the diamond itself.
This reduces unnecessary moving mass and allows the stylus and cantilever assembly to respond more readily to the very small movements contained within the groove.
Why Does Lower Stylus Mass Matter?
A cartridge is effectively trying to measure microscopic changes in the shape of the record groove.
The less unnecessary mass attached to the moving assembly, the more easily the stylus can respond when that groove changes direction.
That can translate into cleaner tracking, more precise transients and improved retrieval of subtle information within a recording.
Bonded vs Nude Elliptical
Both the MC X10 and X20 use an Elliptical groove-contact profile. The difference is construction: the X10 uses a conventional Elliptical stylus while the X20's diamond itself forms the complete stylus. The reduced moving mass of the Nude Elliptical design is the key upgrade.
Aluminium Cantilever
The Nude Elliptical diamond is mounted on an aluminium cantilever.
The cantilever transfers the movement of the stylus into the cartridge generator, so it needs to combine low mass with sufficient rigidity to control those movements accurately.
Ortofon retains aluminium here before introducing different stylus profiles rather than chasing exotic cantilever materials simply for the sake of the specification sheet.
High-Purity Silver Coils
Every MC X cartridge, including the X20, uses coils wound with high-purity silver wire.
Those coils form part of the cartridge's moving assembly and generate the electrical signal as they move within the magnetic field.
Ortofon has chosen to make pure silver coil technology a fundamental part of the complete MC X platform rather than reserving it for only the most expensive models.
Optimised Magnet System
The MC X Series uses a newly developed magnetic system based around a one-piece pole cylinder integrated into the rear magnet yoke.
Ortofon designed this arrangement to maximise magnetic efficiency and provide a clean signal path for the high-purity silver coils.
This generator architecture is shared across the MC X family.
Why Moving Coil?
A moving coil cartridge reverses the basic arrangement found in a conventional moving magnet design.
Rather than moving a magnet near fixed coils, extremely small coils attached to the cantilever assembly move within the cartridge's magnetic field.
This allows the moving assembly to be kept particularly light, helping the cartridge react quickly to fine groove information.
The trade-off is a much smaller electrical signal, which is why the partnering phono stage becomes more important.
0.4mV Low-Output MC
Ortofon specifies an output voltage of 0.4mV at 1kHz and 5cm/sec.
This places the MC X20 firmly in low-output moving coil territory.
A normal moving magnet phono input typically does not provide sufficient gain for a signal at this level.
You Need a Suitable MC Phono Stage
Before buying the MC X20, check that your phono stage supports low-output moving coil cartridges. It needs appropriate gain as well as a suitable load resistance. An MM-only input is not normally sufficient on its own.
Greater Than 50-Ohm Loading
Ortofon specifies a recommended load resistance of greater than 50 ohms.
The MC X20 itself has an internal DC resistance of 6 ohms.
If your phono stage offers adjustable MC loading, choose an appropriate setting above Ortofon's stated 50-ohm minimum and compare the available options.
Don't Confuse Internal Resistance and Loading
The cartridge's 6-ohm internal resistance isn't the setting you should necessarily select on the phono stage. Ortofon specifies an external load of greater than 50 ohms. These are two different electrical measurements.
Custom-Developed Rubber Dampers
The MC X suspension system uses rubber compounds developed and produced by Ortofon.
These dampers control the physical movement of the coils and cantilever assembly while reducing unwanted vibration.
The suspension needs to allow the stylus to move freely enough to follow the record groove while controlling that movement precisely enough to avoid introducing unwanted mechanical behaviour.
Ortofon-Exclusive Suspension
The current MC X20 specification describes the stylus suspension as Ortofon exclusive.
This reflects the company's in-house development of the damping system as an integral part of the cartridge rather than treating suspension characteristics as an afterthought.
MIM Stainless-Steel Honeycomb Core
The MC X20's internal structure is made from stainless steel using Metal Injection Moulding, or MIM.
This manufacturing technique allows Ortofon to create an intricate honeycomb geometry designed to combine mechanical rigidity with carefully controlled mass.
The result is a stable structure around the generator and stylus assembly.
Why Cartridge Rigidity Matters
The movement being measured by a phono cartridge is exceptionally small.
Unwanted flexing or resonance within the cartridge body can therefore interfere with the mechanical information the stylus is trying to retrieve.
A rigid housing gives the stylus, cantilever and generator a stable mechanical reference from which to operate.
PVD Surface Treatment
After the stainless-steel body has been moulded and sintered, Ortofon applies a Physical Vapour Deposition, or PVD, surface treatment.
This helps create the distinctive finish of the MC X cartridge while maintaining the integrity of the metal surface.
25dB Channel Separation
Channel separation is specified at 25dB at 1kHz.
This is slightly higher than the MC X10's 24dB specification and helps maintain clear separation between information recorded in the left and right groove walls.
0.5dB Channel Balance
Channel balance is specified at 0.5dB at 1kHz.
Closely matched channel output contributes to a stable centre image and consistent stereo presentation.
±1dB Frequency Response
Ortofon specifies the MC X20's response across 20Hz to 20kHz at ±1dB.
That's tighter than the ±2dB specification of the X10 and reflects the increasingly refined performance of the Nude Elliptical model.
15µm/mN Compliance
Dynamic lateral compliance is specified at 15µm/mN.
Compliance describes the mechanical flexibility of the stylus suspension and is an important consideration when matching a cartridge to the effective mass of a tonearm.
The X20's compliance is slightly higher than the X10's 13µm/mN figure.
2.0g Recommended Tracking Force
Ortofon specifies a recommended tracking force of 2.0g.
Once the cartridge has been aligned, set tracking force accurately using the tonearm counterweight and ideally verify it with a stylus-force gauge.
Don't Deliberately Track Too Light
A lighter setting isn't automatically safer for your records. If the stylus begins to mistrack, groove stress and distortion can increase. Use Ortofon's recommended 2.0g setting rather than deliberately reducing the force.

Check that your tonearm and counterweight can accommodate this mass and still achieve the correct tracking force.
Half-Inch Mounting
The MC X20 uses conventional half-inch cartridge mounting.

Is Moving Coil Right for My Turntable?
Moving coil isn't automatically better for every turntable or system.
The MC X20 makes most sense when the tonearm is mechanically suitable and the system includes a phono stage capable of properly handling its 0.4mV output.
If you currently have only an MM phono stage, factor the cost of suitable moving coil amplification into the upgrade before choosing the cartridge.
Think About the Whole Analogue Front End
Turntable, tonearm, cartridge and phono stage all work together. In some systems, a sensibly matched cartridge and better phono stage will produce a stronger overall result than spending the entire budget on the cartridge alone.
No User-Replaceable Stylus
The MC X20 is a moving coil cartridge and does not use a removable stylus assembly intended for replacement at home.
If the stylus or cantilever is damaged, don't attempt to pull the assembly away from the cartridge body.
