Ortofon MC X30 Moving Coil Cartridge

Audio T Verdict

The MC X30 is where Ortofon's MC X range starts getting particularly interesting. It keeps the same core generator, silver coils and stainless-steel construction found further down the series, but replaces the X20's Nude Elliptical diamond with a much more sophisticated Nude Fine-Line stylus.

That finer groove-contact profile is designed to retrieve more subtle information and improve tracing accuracy without turning the cartridge into something that simply throws detail at you. The X30 is about resolution, separation and control, while still keeping music sounding coherent and balanced.

It remains a proper 0.4mV low-output moving coil cartridge, so a capable MC phono stage and careful setup are important. Partner it appropriately and the MC X30 offers a very persuasive route into serious moving coil playback.

Ortofon MC X30

The Ortofon MC X30 is a high-performance low-output moving coil cartridge featuring a Nude Fine-Line diamond stylus, aluminium cantilever and the advanced generator technology developed for the MC X Series.

Positioned between the MC X20 and X40, it introduces a more sophisticated line-contact stylus while retaining the range's high-purity silver coils, optimised magnet system, custom-developed damping and rigid MIM stainless-steel honeycomb core.

The Middle Ground of the MC X Series

The MC X30 occupies an important position within Ortofon's moving coil range.

Below it, the X10 and X20 use Elliptical and Nude Elliptical styli respectively. Above it, the X40 moves to a Nude Shibata diamond with a Boron cantilever, while the flagship X50 takes things further with a Nude Micro Ridge profile.

The X30 therefore represents the first MC X cartridge to use a more advanced line-contact stylus while retaining the aluminium cantilever used by the lower models.

Nude Fine-Line Stylus

The defining feature of the MC X30 is its Nude Fine-Line diamond.

Ortofon specifies stylus radii of r/R 8/40µm.

The Fine-Line profile uses a much longer vertical contact area than a conventional Elliptical stylus, allowing it to trace finer groove modulation and make more extensive contact with the groove walls.

Why Fine-Line?

A record groove becomes increasingly difficult to trace accurately as modulation becomes smaller and more complex, particularly at high frequencies and towards the inner grooves of a record.

A Fine-Line stylus uses a narrow tracing radius to follow these changes more precisely while spreading contact over a larger vertical area of the groove wall.

In a suitably capable system, that can mean cleaner high frequencies, improved separation of fine musical information and more convincing low-level detail.

Fine-Line Styli Reward Accurate Setup

More sophisticated stylus profiles can retrieve more information from the groove, but they also make good cartridge alignment increasingly worthwhile. Correct overhang, offset angle, tracking force and anti-skate are important if you want the MC X30 to perform as intended.

A Nude Diamond

The term 'Nude' means the diamond itself forms the stylus rather than a smaller diamond tip being bonded onto a separate metal shank.

Removing that additional material reduces moving mass at the end of the cantilever.

That helps the stylus assembly react more readily as the groove changes direction, contributing to improved transient response and fine-detail retrieval.

Aluminium Cantilever

The Nude Fine-Line stylus is mounted on an aluminium cantilever.

The cantilever transfers the movements of the diamond into the moving coil generator and needs to combine low mass with sufficient rigidity to keep those movements under control.

The X30 retains aluminium before Ortofon introduces a Boron cantilever on the step-up MC X40.

High-Purity Silver Coils

Every cartridge in the MC X Series uses coils wound with high-purity silver wire.

These extremely small coils move inside the magnetic field as the stylus traces the record, generating the electrical signal sent to the phono stage.

Using silver throughout the range means the X30 benefits from the same fundamental coil material as models above and below it.

Optimised Magnet System

The MC X Series uses a newly developed magnet system with a one-piece pole cylinder integrated into the rear magnet yoke.

Ortofon designed this arrangement to maximise magnetic efficiency and provide a clean signal path for the cartridge's silver coils.

The result is the core generator architecture shared by the MC X family.

0.4mV Low-Output Moving Coil

The MC X30 produces 0.4mV at 1kHz and 5cm/sec.

This places it firmly in low-output moving coil territory.

A conventional MM phono input will not normally provide sufficient gain, so the cartridge needs a suitably capable MC phono stage or compatible step-up arrangement.

Check Your Phono Stage Before Ordering

The MC X30 is a low-output moving coil cartridge. Make sure your phono stage offers appropriate MC gain and loading. A phono input being labelled simply 'Phono' does not automatically mean it is suitable.

Greater Than 50-Ohm Loading

Ortofon specifies a recommended load resistance of greater than 50 ohms.

The cartridge itself has an internal DC resistance of 6 ohms.

These are different figures: 6 ohms describes the cartridge's internal resistance, while greater than 50 ohms describes the external electrical load Ortofon recommends from the phono stage.

Which MC Load Setting Should I Use?

If your phono stage provides adjustable loading, use a suitable value above Ortofon's 50-ohm minimum and compare the available settings. Audio T can help with both gain and loading when matching the cartridge to a particular phono stage.

Custom-Developed Rubber Dampers

The mechanical suspension used by the MC X Series incorporates rubber compounds developed and produced by Ortofon.

These dampers control movement of the coil and cantilever assembly, helping reduce unwanted vibration while allowing the stylus to follow the groove accurately.

Suspension design is fundamental to any cartridge because the moving assembly has to be free enough to respond to music while remaining precisely controlled.

Ortofon-Exclusive Suspension

Ortofon describes the MC X30 stylus suspension as Ortofon exclusive.

The suspension forms part of the complete cartridge design rather than being treated as an unrelated component, helping Ortofon tune the behaviour of the stylus, cantilever and moving coils as one mechanical system.

MIM Stainless-Steel Honeycomb Core

At the heart of the MC X body is a stainless-steel frame created using Metal Injection Moulding, or MIM.

This process allows Ortofon to manufacture an intricate honeycomb internal structure designed to provide excellent mechanical stability.

The rigid construction gives the generator and stylus assembly a stable platform from which to operate.

Why Cartridge Rigidity Matters

The movements being read from a record groove are extraordinarily small.

If the cartridge structure itself flexes or resonates unnecessarily, that movement can interfere with the information the stylus is attempting to retrieve.

A rigid body therefore helps ensure that the motion converted into an electrical signal is coming from the groove rather than from unwanted movement within the cartridge.

PVD Surface Treatment

Following the moulding and sintering process, Ortofon applies a Physical Vapour Deposition, or PVD, treatment to the stainless-steel structure.

This enhances the surface appearance while helping maintain the integrity of the finished material over time.

26dB Channel Separation

Channel separation is specified at 26dB at 1kHz.

This progresses from 24dB on the X10 and 25dB on the X20, helping preserve clear separation between information contained in the left and right groove walls.

0.5dB Channel Balance

Ortofon specifies channel balance at 0.5dB at 1kHz.

Keeping the output of both channels closely matched contributes to stable centre imaging and consistent stereo reproduction.

±1dB Frequency Response

The MC X30 has a specified frequency response of ±1dB from 20Hz to 20kHz.

This matches the tight tolerance of the X20, with the main performance progression coming from the X30's more advanced Fine-Line groove-contact profile.

15µm/mN Compliance

Dynamic lateral compliance is specified at 15µm/mN.

Compliance describes the mechanical flexibility of the stylus suspension and needs to be considered alongside the effective mass of the tonearm.

The cartridge itself weighs 8.6g, so both figures can be relevant when assessing tonearm compatibility.

2.0g Recommended Tracking Force

Ortofon recommends a tracking force of 2.0g.

After the cartridge has been fitted and aligned, tracking force should be set using the tonearm counterweight and ideally confirmed with a suitable stylus-force gauge.

Don't Deliberately Track Too Light

Reducing tracking force below the manufacturer's recommendation does not automatically protect your records. A cartridge that mistracks can increase distortion and groove stress. Start with Ortofon's recommended 2.0g setting.

8.6g Cartridge Weight

The MC X30 weighs 8.6g.

Check that your tonearm and counterweight arrangement can accommodate the cartridge and still provide the correct tracking force.

Half-Inch Mounting

The MC X30 uses standard half-inch mounting.

This makes it physically compatible with a broad range of tonearms and headshells using the conventional two-screw cartridge arrangement.

Mechanical compatibility, cartridge alignment and MC phono-stage requirements should still be checked before installation.

MC X20 or MC X30?

The X20 and X30 share much of their underlying engineering, but the stylus profile changes significantly.

MC X20

  • Nude Elliptical stylus
  • r/R 8/18µm radii
  • Aluminium cantilever
  • 0.4mV output
  • 25dB channel separation
  • 15µm/mN compliance

MC X30

  • Nude Fine-Line stylus
  • r/R 8/40µm radii
  • Aluminium cantilever
  • 0.4mV output
  • 26dB channel separation
  • 15µm/mN compliance

The principal reason to move to the X30 is therefore its Fine-Line stylus rather than a wholesale change of generator. For a sufficiently revealing turntable, that more sophisticated groove-contact profile can be a meaningful upgrade.

MC X30 or MC X40?

The X40 takes two substantial steps beyond the X30 by changing both the stylus and the cantilever.

MC X30

  • Nude Fine-Line stylus
  • Aluminium cantilever
  • 0.4mV output
  • 26dB channel separation
  • Excellent line-contact MC option

MC X40

  • Nude Shibata stylus
  • Boron cantilever
  • 0.4mV output
  • More sophisticated moving assembly
  • Designed for greater transparency and refinement

The X40 is therefore more than simply a finer version of the X30 stylus. Its Boron cantilever changes the moving assembly as well, making the step increasingly worthwhile on turntables capable of exploiting that level of cartridge performance.

Award-Winning Performance

The MC X30 received two honours at the What Hi-Fi? Awards 2025:

  • Product of the Year: Accessories
  • Best Cartridge Over £500

Awards aren't a substitute for correct system matching, but the recognition reinforces the X30's position as an important model in Ortofon's current moving coil range.

No User-Replaceable Stylus

The MC X30 does not use the removable stylus assembly found on Ortofon's moving magnet cartridges.

The stylus, cantilever and moving coil generator form part of the cartridge assembly, so a damaged diamond or cantilever should not be pulled away from the body by the customer.

Ortofon Exchange Service

The MC X30 is currently included in Ortofon's moving coil cartridge exchange programme.

An eligible MC X30 can be exchanged towards another MC X30 or a qualifying cartridge above it.

This provides a manufacturer-supported route if the cartridge is damaged, eventually needs replacing or you decide to move further up the Ortofon range.

Accurate Cartridge Alignment

The Fine-Line stylus makes careful installation particularly worthwhile.

A thorough setup should include:

  • Correct cartridge overhang
  • Accurate offset angle
  • 2.0g tracking force
  • Appropriate anti-skate
  • Tonearm height where adjustable
  • Azimuth where adjustable
  • Suitable low-output moving coil gain
  • Load resistance greater than 50 ohms
  • Checking cartridge and tonearm mechanical compatibility

If you're not comfortable carrying out cartridge alignment yourself, professional fitting can be especially worthwhile with a Fine-Line stylus.
