The MC X40 is where Ortofon's MC X range makes a substantial jump in sophistication. The X30's aluminium cantilever and Fine-Line diamond give way to a lightweight Boron cantilever carrying a Nude Shibata stylus, bringing a more advanced moving assembly to the same excellent MC X generator platform.
The result is a cartridge designed to retrieve a great deal of information from the groove without making detail the only thing that matters. The Shibata profile offers extensive groove-wall contact, while the Boron cantilever gives the stylus a stiff, low-mass connection to the generator.
As with every MC X model, this is a genuine low-output moving coil cartridge. Its 0.4mV output needs a suitable MC phono stage and the Shibata stylus rewards careful alignment, but in a suitably capable turntable the MC X40 is a very serious cartridge indeed.

The Step Into Boron and Shibata
The MC X40 marks an important point in the MC X Series because Ortofon changes both the stylus profile and cantilever material.
The MC X30 below it uses a Nude Fine-Line diamond mounted on an aluminium cantilever. The X40 moves to a Nude Shibata stylus and a Boron cantilever, significantly changing the mechanical assembly that actually reads the record groove.
That makes the X40 more than simply another incremental specification increase.

A sophisticated line-contact stylus is capable of retrieving a great deal of information, but alignment becomes increasingly important. Correct overhang, offset angle, tracking force and anti-skate are all worthwhile if you want the MC X40 to perform as intended.
