The main concession is the stylus. The X10 uses an Elliptical diamond rather than the Nude Elliptical and more advanced profiles found as you progress through the range. That actually makes a lot of sense as an introduction to moving coil playback, giving you good groove tracing without immediately demanding one of Ortofon's more specialised stylus designs.

The Starting Point for the MC X Series
The MC X Series was created as a new generation of Ortofon moving coil cartridges, combining technologies shared across the range with different stylus profiles as performance increases.
The MC X10 lays the foundation with an Elliptical stylus, while the MC X20 takes the next step with a Nude Elliptical diamond.

The Elliptical stylus is mounted to an aluminium cantilever.

Pure Silver Coil System

Use the Manufacturer's Tracking Force
Running a cartridge lighter than its recommended tracking force does not automatically reduce record wear. If the stylus mistracks, groove stress and distortion can increase. Start with Ortofon's specified 2.0g setting.
13µm/mN Compliance
The MC X10 has a dynamic lateral compliance of 13µm/mN.
Compliance describes how readily the cartridge suspension moves and forms part of the mechanical relationship between cartridge and tonearm.

Moving Magnet or MC X10?
A moving coil cartridge isn't automatically the right choice simply because the technology is different.
The MC X10 is most worthwhile when your turntable, tonearm and phono stage can support a low-output moving coil cartridge properly.
A good moving magnet cartridge may still be the better choice where the amplifier only provides an MM input, where easy stylus replacement is important or where the rest of the turntable cannot fully exploit the MC X10.
Remember the Phono Stage Budget
