Sonos Sub Mini Compact Wireless Subwoofer

Audio T Verdict

Sonos Sub Mini is one of the easiest ways to make a smaller Sonos system sound considerably more substantial without filling the room with another large piece of equipment. Its two inward-facing six-inch woofers reach down to 25Hz, bringing the weight and impact that compact soundbars and wireless speakers simply cannot reproduce on their own.

There is another benefit that is every bit as important as deeper bass. Once Sub Mini takes responsibility for the lowest frequencies, the paired Sonos soundbar or speakers can concentrate more of their available output on the midrange and treble. Dialogue can sound clearer, music can become more open and the whole system can feel more effortless.

Sub 4 remains the stronger option for larger rooms and more ambitious systems, but Sub Mini is arguably the sweeter match for Beam, Ray and Era 100. It is considerably easier to accommodate, its sealed force-cancelling design keeps unwanted cabinet vibration under control and Trueplay can optimise the complete Sonos system around the room once you have found the best position.

Sonos Sub Mini Compact Wireless Subwoofer

Sonos Sub Mini is a compact wireless powered subwoofer designed to add deeper, cleaner and more powerful bass to compatible Sonos speakers and home cinema systems.

Two custom six-inch woofers face one another inside the central acoustic tunnel, operating in opposition to create a force-cancelling effect that reduces unwanted cabinet vibration, buzz and rattle.

The sealed enclosure reaches down to 25Hz while remaining far smaller and lighter than the full-size Sonos Sub 4, making Sub Mini particularly well suited to small and medium-sized listening rooms.

Small Subwoofer, Serious Bass

Sub Mini is much smaller than the full-size Sonos Sub, but it still reaches down to a manufacturer-specified 25Hz.

This covers genuinely deep bass information found in films, electronic music, drums, bass guitars, orchestral recordings and modern television soundtracks.

Its real limitation compared with Sub 4 is not simply how low it can reach, but how much low-frequency energy it can produce in a larger room or at higher listening levels.

Designed for Small and Medium-Sized Rooms

Sonos specifically positions Sub Mini for small and medium-sized rooms and low to moderate volume levels.

This makes it particularly appropriate for:

  • Bedrooms
  • Smaller living rooms
  • Flats and apartments
  • Home offices
  • Gaming rooms
  • Compact Beam systems
  • Ray home cinema systems
  • Era 100 music systems

Why Add a Subwoofer?

Low bass places much greater physical demands on a loudspeaker than midrange and treble.

A compact soundbar or wireless speaker has limited cabinet volume and driver excursion, so asking it to reproduce very deep bass consumes a substantial amount of its available capability.

Adding Sub Mini gives the lowest frequencies to a product designed specifically for that job.

More Than Just Extra Bass

Once Sub Mini has been bonded with a compatible Sonos speaker, the system automatically adjusts the way the speakers work together.

The main product no longer has to reproduce as much deep bass, allowing it to concentrate more heavily on voices, instruments and higher-frequency effects.

Sub Mini Can Improve the Main Speaker Too

The improvement is not simply more low-end output. Relieving the paired soundbar or speaker of the deepest bass can help the complete system sound cleaner and more effortless.

Dual 6-Inch Woofers

Sub Mini contains two custom six-inch woofers.

Unlike a conventional subwoofer where the driver may fire forwards or downwards, Sonos positions both woofers facing one another inside the centre of the enclosure.

Force-Cancelling Design

The two drivers move in opposition.

The mechanical force generated by one woofer is countered by the movement of the other, helping neutralise the physical energy that would otherwise be transmitted into the cabinet.

This is why the central tunnel can produce considerable bass output without the enclosure itself shaking excessively.

Less Buzz and Rattle

Unwanted cabinet vibration can introduce noises that were never part of the original recording.

The force-cancelling layout is designed to minimise this behaviour, particularly when Sub Mini is working hard with demanding film effects or bass-heavy music.

Sealed Cabinet

Sub Mini uses a sealed acoustic enclosure.

This differs from the ported architecture used by the larger Sonos Sub 4.

The sealed design works with Sonos' digital processing and opposed woofers to produce controlled low-frequency output from the compact cylindrical cabinet.

Why a Sealed Subwoofer?

A sealed cabinet contains the rear acoustic output of the drivers rather than using a conventional bass-reflex port to reinforce selected frequencies.

Sonos combines this architecture with advanced limiting and equalisation algorithms to maximise useful low-frequency extension while keeping the enclosure relatively compact.

25Hz Bass Extension

Sonos specifies Sub Mini as reproducing frequencies as low as 25Hz.

That reaches below the lowest note of a conventional piano, which sits at approximately 27.5Hz.

The lowest bass is often experienced as much physically as it is heard.

Digital Processing

Sub Mini uses a combination of equalisation and advanced limiting algorithms to extend bass response while protecting the compact acoustic system.

The processing continuously works alongside the Class-D amplification and custom drivers as one integrated design.

Two Class-D Amplifiers

Two Class-D digital amplifiers are individually tuned to Sub Mini's acoustic architecture.

Each works with the opposed woofer system and digital processing rather than relying on a generic off-the-shelf amplifier module.

Sub Mini With Sonos Beam (Gen 2)

Sonos Beam (Gen 2) is one of Sub Mini's most natural partners.

Beam already provides a convincing front soundstage and Dolby Atmos processing, but its compact cabinet cannot reproduce the same low-frequency scale as a dedicated subwoofer.

Adding Sub Mini brings greater weight to films, games and music while allowing Beam to concentrate more heavily on dialogue and the rest of the soundtrack.

A Great Small-Room Home Cinema Combination

Beam and Sub Mini work especially well where space is limited.

You gain substantially deeper bass without needing the physical size, weight or output capability of Sub 4.

Sub Mini With Sonos Ray

Sonos Ray is another ideal match.

Ray is designed primarily for smaller rooms and televisions, so the size and performance of Sub Mini suit it particularly well.

Sonos currently offers Ray and Sub Mini together as an official entertainment set.

From Simple Soundbar to Proper Home Cinema

A Ray system can start with the soundbar alone and expand gradually:

  1. Start with Sonos Ray
  2. Add Sub Mini for deeper bass
  3. Add a compatible matching pair of Sonos rear speakers

This provides a straightforward upgrade path without replacing the products already purchased.

Sub Mini With Era 100

Sonos Era 100 is one of the manufacturer's current recommended music pairings for Sub Mini.

Even one Era 100 produces surprisingly strong bass for its size, but adding Sub Mini extends the system considerably lower and lets the speaker concentrate on its stereo presentation and midrange.

Sub Mini With an Era 100 Stereo Pair

Two Era 100 speakers can form dedicated left and right channels.

Add Sub Mini and the result becomes a compact three-box wireless stereo system with a proper separated soundstage and dedicated deep bass.

Sub Mini With Era 100 SL

Current Sonos support also confirms compatibility with Era 100 SL.

This gives customers who prefer the microphone-free Era model the same option to add dedicated wireless bass.

Sub Mini With Era 300

Sonos Era 300 is officially compatible with Sub Mini.

The combination can make sense in a smaller spatial-audio music system, although Sub 4 may be a more appropriate match where the room and listening levels justify greater bass output.

Sub Mini With Sonos Five

Sonos Five is compatible with Sub Mini as well.

Five already has considerably more bass capability than Era 100, so whether Sub Mini is worthwhile depends on the room and how much additional extension is wanted.

For a larger Five system, the full-size Sub 4 may offer a more natural match.

Sub Mini With Sonos Arc and Arc Ultra

Current Sonos support lists both Arc and Arc Ultra as compatible with Sub Mini.

This means Sub Mini can be used where room size or available space makes the full-size Sub impractical.

For larger rooms, higher playback levels and flagship home cinema installations, Sub 4 remains the more obvious partner.

Compatible Does Not Always Mean Best Matched

Sub Mini can technically work with flagship Sonos soundbars, but system scale matters. For a large Arc Ultra cinema room, Sub 4 will usually make more sense. Sub Mini excels when compact dimensions and balanced bass for a smaller space are the priorities.

Sub Mini With Sonos Amp

Sonos Amp can bond wirelessly with Sub Mini.

This allows passive loudspeakers powered by Amp to gain a dedicated subwoofer without running a conventional RCA subwoofer cable across the room.

Compatible With Some Older Sonos Speakers

One advantage Sub Mini has over Sub 4 is broader compatibility with several previous-generation Sonos products.

Current Sonos support includes:

  • One (Gen 1)
  • One (Gen 2)
  • One SL
  • Play:1
  • Play:3
  • Play:5 (Gen 2)

Compatible With Older Home Cinema Products

Current support also includes:

  • Playbar
  • Playbase
  • Arc
  • Arc SL
  • Beam (Gen 1)
  • Beam (Gen 2)
  • Ray
  • Arc Ultra

Older Product Compatibility Still Requires the Current Sonos Platform

Sub Mini itself does not work with the legacy S1 Controller. An older compatible product such as Play:1 or Playbar therefore needs to be operating within a current-generation Sonos system before Sub Mini can be added.

SYMFONISK Compatibility

Current Sonos support also includes several compatible IKEA SYMFONISK models.

These include supported Bookshelf, Table Lamp, Floor Lamp and Picture Frame products.

Check the exact generation if adding Sub Mini to an older SYMFONISK installation.

Products That Cannot Use Sub Mini

Sub Mini needs an amplified, non-portable Sonos product to operate.

It cannot bond directly with unamplified or portable products including:

  • Sonos Port
  • Sonos Connect
  • Sonos Move
  • Sonos Move 2
  • Sonos Roam
  • Sonos Roam 2
  • Sonos Roam SL
  • Sonos Play portable speaker

Why Can't Sub Mini Work With Port?

Sonos Port is an unamplified streaming component designed to feed an existing hi-fi system.

It is therefore not treated as a powered Sonos loudspeaker room to which Sub Mini can be bonded directly.

Why Doesn't Sub Mini Work With Move or Roam?

Move and Roam products are designed around portable battery-powered operation.

Sonos does not support direct Sub bonding with its portable speaker range.

One Sub Mini Per Sonos Room

Sub Mini is designed as a single-subwoofer solution.

Current Sonos dual-Sub functionality applies to supported combinations of the larger full-size Sub generations rather than Sub Mini.

Two Sub Minis Cannot Be Bonded as a Dual-Sub System

If you need a supported dual-subwoofer Sonos home cinema system, look at compatible full-size Sub models such as Sub 4 and Sub (Gen 3). Sub Mini is intended to operate as a single subwoofer in its paired room.

Sub Mini Cannot Be Combined With a Full-Size Sub

A Sonos room cannot use Sub Mini alongside Sub 4, Sub (Gen 3) or another full-size Sonos Sub as a dual-subwoofer configuration.

If your system has outgrown Sub Mini, the normal upgrade route is to move to an appropriate full-size Sub rather than add a second different model.

Sub Mini or Sub 4?

The two Sonos subwoofers reach a similarly deep part of the frequency spectrum on paper, but they are designed for very different system scales.

Sonos Sub Mini

  • Compact cylindrical design
  • Two 6-inch woofers
  • Sealed enclosure
  • Force-cancelling architecture
  • 25Hz minimum frequency
  • 6.35kg
  • Ideal for small and medium rooms
  • Best suited to low and moderate listening levels
  • Natural match for Beam, Ray and Era 100
  • No dual-Sub operation

Sonos Sub 4

  • Full-size premium design
  • Two 5 x 8-inch elliptical woofers
  • Ported enclosure
  • Force-cancelling architecture
  • 25Hz minimum frequency
  • 11.79kg
  • Greater system scale
  • Better suited to larger rooms
  • Natural match for Arc Ultra and larger systems
  • Supported dual-Sub home cinema configurations

Both Reach 25Hz, So Why Is Sub 4 Bigger?

A minimum frequency figure does not tell you how much acoustic output a subwoofer can produce at that frequency or how comfortably it can fill a large room.

Sub Mini is engineered to reach very low frequencies from a small cabinet, while Sub 4 provides a much larger acoustic platform intended for more demanding systems and listening levels.

When Sub Mini Makes More Sense

Choose Sub Mini when:

  • The room is small or medium sized
  • You mainly listen at low or moderate levels
  • Space is limited
  • You use Beam or Ray
  • You use Era 100
  • You live in a flat or apartment
  • You want meaningful bass without a visually dominant subwoofer

When Sub 4 Makes More Sense

Consider Sub 4 when:

  • The room is larger
  • You regularly listen at higher levels
  • You use Arc Ultra
  • You have an ambitious Era 300 system
  • You have a substantial Five stereo system
  • You want greater cinema impact
  • You may eventually want a supported dual-Sub home cinema system

Trueplay Integration

Trueplay measures the effect of the room on the complete Sonos system and applies acoustic correction.

When Sub Mini is bonded to a compatible room, it forms part of that tuning process.

This helps balance the relationship between the main speakers and the subwoofer rather than treating Sub Mini as an independent bass box.

Traditional Trueplay

Most conventional Sonos Trueplay measurements use the microphone of a compatible iPhone or iPad while you move around the listening area.

The app measures how the system interacts with walls, furniture and other surfaces before applying the final correction.

Newer Sonos Products Offer Additional Trueplay Options

Products such as Arc Ultra, Era 100 and Era 300 support newer Quick and Advanced Trueplay methods.

The exact tuning method available when Sub Mini is part of the room depends on the primary Sonos product and the current Sonos software.

Place First, Trueplay Last

Do not run Trueplay and then move Sub Mini to the other side of the room. Find the position you intend to keep, then tune the complete system around that location.

Automatic System Equalisation

When Sub Mini is added, Sonos automatically adjusts the audio settings to balance it with the paired product or products.

Volume changes to the main room also apply to Sub Mini automatically.

Adjustable Sub Level

The Sonos app includes a dedicated Sub Level adjustment.

This increases or reduces the contribution from Sub Mini without simply turning the complete Sonos room up or down.

How Much Sub Level Should You Use?

The aim is usually integration rather than maximum output.

If every bass note immediately draws attention to the location of the subwoofer, the level may simply be too high.

Start around the default position and fine-tune by listening to familiar music and television material.

Phase Control

The Sub Audio settings include 0° and 180° phase options.

If the bass seems unexpectedly weak at your normal listening position, changing the phase can alter the way Sub Mini combines acoustically with the paired speaker.

Trueplay Controls Phase Automatically

Once a room has been Trueplay tuned, Sonos sets the phase relationship as part of the acoustic calibration.

Manual phase control is therefore unavailable while Trueplay remains enabled.

Switch Sub Mini Off in the App

The Sub Audio menu includes an on/off switch.

This lets you temporarily hear the main Sonos system without Sub Mini without physically unplugging or removing it from the room.

A Useful Before-and-After Demonstration

Toggling Sub Mini on and off is one of the easiest ways to understand what it is contributing.

You may notice not only the missing low bass when it is switched off, but also the increased workload placed back onto the main speakers.

Flexible Room Placement

Because the audio connection is wireless, Sub Mini does not need an RCA cable running back to a soundbar or amplifier.

This gives you much more freedom to experiment with placement.

Sonos Recommends Upright Placement

Sub Mini is designed to stand vertically on its base.

Unlike the larger Sub 4, Sonos does not document a horizontal under-sofa operating position for Sub Mini.

Keep Sub Mini Upright

Use the cylindrical cabinet in its normal vertical orientation. If horizontal placement beneath furniture is required, the full-size Sonos Sub 4 is specifically designed to support that type of installation.

The Centre Tunnel Can Face Any Direction

Sonos does not require the central opening to point directly at the listening position.

The tunnel can face in any direction, which makes Sub Mini considerably easier to integrate beside furniture.

Keep Airflow Through the Tunnel Clear

The centre opening efficiently moves air as the two woofers operate.

If Sub Mini is positioned close to a wall, cabinet or other furniture, leave enough clearance around the tunnel for air to move freely.

Do Not Block the Centre Opening

At least one side of the central tunnel must remain clear. If Sub Mini is positioned against a wall, do not block the front opening.

Place It Near the Paired Speaker to Begin With

Sonos recommends initially placing Sub Mini near the speaker or soundbar with which it will be used.

That provides a straightforward starting point before experimenting with other suitable room positions.

Corner Placement

Placing a subwoofer near two or three room boundaries can increase low-frequency reinforcement.

This can provide more apparent bass but may also make some frequencies disproportionately strong.

If a corner sounds excessive, move Sub Mini away from one of the boundaries and retest.

Next to a Wall

Wall placement is perfectly practical and Sonos specifically highlights Trueplay's ability to adapt Sub Mini even when positioned near a wall.

Just keep the central tunnel unobstructed.

Under a Desk or Table

Sub Mini's compact cylindrical form fits easily beneath many desks and tables.

This can be particularly useful in a gaming room, office or smaller living room where floor space around the TV unit is limited.

Subwoofer Position Can Make a Big Difference

Low-frequency wavelengths interact strongly with the dimensions of the room.

That means moving Sub Mini only a relatively short distance can sometimes make bass at the listening position noticeably stronger, smoother or weaker.

Experiment Before Settling on a Position

If the first location sounds boomy or there seems to be surprisingly little bass at the sofa, try another position before reaching immediately for the Sub Level control.

Once you have found a promising location, run Trueplay and then fine-tune the level.

Wireless Connection

Sub Mini connects to its Sonos room wirelessly.

This avoids a conventional analogue subwoofer cable and makes placement significantly easier.

5GHz Connection for Home Cinema

Sonos specifically highlights the use of a fast 5GHz wireless connection when Sub Mini is paired with home cinema products such as Beam or Ray.

This helps maintain reliable synchronisation between the soundbar and low-frequency channel.

2.4GHz and 5GHz Network Support

Current Sonos product specifications identify Sub Mini as compatible with suitable 802.11a/b/g/n 2.4GHz or 5GHz broadcast-capable routers.

Current Sonos network guidance also confirms 5GHz 802.11n/a capability and WPA3 security support.

Not a WiFi 6 Product

Sub Mini should not be described as having the WiFi 6 radio used by Sub 4.

Sonos currently lists Sub Mini itself under 5GHz 802.11n/a support.

10/100 Ethernet

A 10/100 Ethernet connection is provided on the underside of the product.

This allows Sub Mini to be hard-wired to a compatible network where required.

WiFi Can Be Disabled When Ethernet Is Connected

The Sonos app allows WiFi to be disabled when Sub Mini has a physical Ethernet network connection.

The option is not available while the product is operating wirelessly.

WPA3 Security

Current Sonos network compatibility includes WPA3 as well as WPA and WPA2 for Sub Mini on the current Sonos platform.

Dual-Core Processor Architecture

Sonos specifies a dual-core processing architecture incorporating:

  • ARM Cortex-A9 processor
  • ARM Cortex-M4 processor

These processors manage the wireless connection, digital signal processing, system synchronisation and other Sonos software functions.

Current Sonos App Required

Sub Mini requires the latest generation of the Sonos app.

It cannot be set up or operated as part of a Sonos S1 household.

Sub Mini Is Not S1 Compatible

If you have an older Sonos installation that still relies entirely on the S1 Controller, check whether the compatible main speaker can move to the current Sonos platform before adding Sub Mini.

Compact Cylindrical Design

Sub Mini measures:

  • Height: 305mm
  • Diameter: 230mm
  • Weight: 6.35kg

The cylinder occupies considerably less visual and physical space than many traditional box-shaped subwoofers.

Only 230mm Across

With a footprint only 230mm in diameter, Sub Mini can fit into places where a full-width conventional subwoofer simply would not.

That makes it particularly useful beside narrow TV units and furniture.

6.35kg Weight

At 6.35kg, Sub Mini is less than two-thirds the weight of Sub 4.

It is still substantial enough to remain stable on the floor, but considerably easier to reposition when experimenting with room acoustics.

Black or White

Sub Mini is available in Black and White with a matte finish.

The simple cylindrical styling is deliberately understated so the subwoofer can sit beside existing furniture rather than looking like a piece of professional PA equipment.

Internal Power Supply

The universal internal power supply accepts 100–240V AC at 50/60Hz.

No external power brick is required.

Two-Metre Power Cable Included

A two-metre mains power cable is supplied.

Although the audio connection is wireless, Sub Mini is mains powered and therefore needs access to a nearby electrical outlet.

Wireless Does Not Mean Battery Powered

Sub Mini receives its audio wirelessly but still requires permanent mains power. Factor the position of electrical sockets into your placement decision.

Operating Temperature

Sonos specifies an operating range of approximately 0°C to 40°C.

Sub Mini is designed for normal indoor listening environments.

Storage Temperature

The detailed product guide specifies a storage range of approximately -25°C to 70°C.

These are storage limits rather than recommended everyday operating conditions.

Indoor Use Only

Sub Mini is not weather resistant.

Do not use it outside, expose it to rain or position it in areas where it may come into contact with water.

Simple Setup

Sub Mini has no conventional audio signal cable to connect.

Setup consists principally of:

  1. Setting up the compatible Sonos soundbar or speaker first
  2. Placing Sub Mini upright in the intended room
  3. Connecting its mains power cable
  4. Opening the current Sonos app
  5. Selecting the compatible room
  6. Choosing Connect Sub
  7. Following the app instructions

The Main Speaker Must Be Set Up First

Sub Mini cannot exist as an independent Sonos room.

A compatible amplified Sonos speaker or home cinema product must already be configured before the subwoofer can be bonded to it.

Sub Mini Does Not Appear as a Separate Room

Once paired, Sub Mini becomes part of the main Sonos room rather than appearing independently in the normal room list.

Changes to volume, mute and music playback therefore apply to the complete room.

Move Sub Mini to Another Sonos Room

Sub Mini can be removed from one compatible room and added to another later.

This is useful if the system changes or the subwoofer moves from a music system into a home cinema room.

Recommended Sonos Sub Mini Setup Routine

  1. Confirm that the Sonos product you intend to use supports Sub Mini.
  2. Check that the system is running the current Sonos platform rather than S1.
  3. Set up the main soundbar or speaker first.
  4. Choose an initial upright position near the paired product.
  5. Make sure at least one side of the centre tunnel remains unobstructed.
  6. Connect the supplied mains cable.
  7. Open the Sonos app.
  8. Select the room containing the compatible product.
  9. Choose Connect Sub.
  10. Follow the app instructions to bond Sub Mini.
  11. Play familiar music or television content.
  12. Listen from the normal seating position.
  13. If the bass sounds unusually strong or weak, experiment with another physical position.
  14. Once the position is final, perform the appropriate Trueplay tuning where available.
  15. Fine-tune Sub Level to suit the room.
  16. Check phase only if bass remains unusually weak and Trueplay is not currently setting it automatically.
  17. Use the Sub Audio on/off switch for a quick before-and-after comparison.
