Audio T Verdict
Era 300 is the Sonos speaker to choose when you want more than conventional room-filling wireless audio. Its unusually shaped cabinet houses drivers firing forwards, sideways and upwards, allowing Dolby Atmos Music to expand beyond the physical speaker and create a much larger three-dimensional presentation around the room.
There is plenty to like even with ordinary stereo music. Two side-firing tweeters and a pair of angled woofers help Era 300 produce an unusually broad soundstage from one cabinet, while pairing two speakers creates a much more substantial left/right music system. WiFi remains the best route for normal Sonos listening, but Bluetooth and optional analogue line-in make Era 300 considerably more flexible than earlier generations of Sonos speakers.
It is also one of Sonos' most capable rear-surround speakers. A pair with Arc Ultra or Beam (Gen 2) can reproduce lateral and overhead information behind the listening position, making Era 300 particularly appealing if music and a serious Dolby Atmos home cinema system are both priorities.
Sonos Era 300 Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio Smart Speaker
Sonos Era 300 is a premium wireless speaker designed around spatial audio and Dolby Atmos Music, using six carefully positioned drivers to project sound forwards, sideways and upwards.
Six Class-D amplifiers power four tweeters and two woofers, while custom waveguides control the way sound is dispersed around the room. WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, Apple AirPlay 2 and optional USB-C line-in provide several ways to play, while Trueplay adapts the speaker to its acoustic environment.

Designed From the Start for Spatial Audio
Era 300 does not take a conventional forward-firing speaker design and simply add spatial processing afterwards.
The shape of the cabinet, position of the drivers and direction of the waveguides are all designed around sending sound in several directions at once.
With compatible Dolby Atmos Music, individual elements of a mix can therefore appear above, beside and around the listener rather than being restricted to a conventional left-to-right line across the room.
Six Drivers Around the Cabinet
The acoustic system uses four tweeters and two woofers positioned around the front, sides and top of the speaker.
Each driver has a particular role in creating Era 300's spatial presentation rather than all six simply facing forwards.
Forward-Firing Centre Tweeter
The forward-facing tweeter helps create a stable centre image.
This is particularly important for vocals and instruments placed in the middle of a stereo or spatial mix, preventing the expansive soundstage from becoming vague or unfocused.
Two Side-Firing Tweeters
The two side-firing tweeters project high and midrange information towards the left and right of the room.
Combined with Sonos' custom waveguides, they allow the soundstage to extend well beyond the width of the cabinet and help one Era 300 generate surprisingly broad stereo information.
Upward-Firing Tweeter
The upward-firing tweeter is dedicated to the vertical dimension of spatial audio.
With Dolby Atmos content it directs sound towards the ceiling, where the energy reflects back towards the listening area to create the impression of information arriving from above.
Your Ceiling Forms Part of the Atmos System
Upward-firing spatial audio relies on interaction with the room. Ceiling height, shape and material therefore influence the strength and precision of the height effect. Era 300 is remarkably adaptable, but it cannot make every room acoustically identical.
Two Angled Woofers
Two woofers are angled towards the left and right rather than both firing directly forwards.
This supports Era 300's wide stereo presentation while also providing the larger radiating area required for substantial bass reproduction.
Six Class-D Amplifiers
Each acoustic section is powered by Sonos' integrated Class-D amplification.
Six individual amplifier channels allow the processing system to control each driver according to its position and intended role within the overall sound field.
Custom Waveguides
Era 300 uses carefully shaped waveguides to control how sound leaves the cabinet.
The aim is not merely to make the speaker loud in every direction, but to disperse specific parts of the programme deliberately to the front, sides and ceiling.
Dolby Atmos Music
Dolby Atmos Music allows artists and producers to position musical elements within a three-dimensional space rather than limiting every sound to conventional left and right channels.
Era 300 is the Sonos standalone speaker specifically designed to reproduce that type of spatial music mix.
Supported services and compatible Atmos content are required for true Dolby Atmos Music playback.
Spatial Music Services
Spatial audio availability depends on the music service and content itself.
Sonos currently supports spatial music from compatible services including Apple Music and Amazon Music, with service availability and catalogue differing by region and subscription.
If an album is available only in stereo, Era 300 still plays it normally using its stereo acoustic architecture.
Stereo Music Still Matters
Era 300 is not useful only when the Dolby Atmos badge appears.
The broad driver dispersion also gives conventional two-channel music a spacious presentation, with sound extending further beyond the physical speaker than you might expect from a single cabinet.
One Era 300 or Two?
A single Era 300 is designed to create a wide and immersive room-filling presentation on its own.
Pairing two Era 300 speakers creates dedicated physical left and right channels and considerably increases the scale and precision of conventional stereo playback.
One Era 300
- Single-box music system
- Dolby Atmos Music
- Wide spatial presentation
- Six-driver architecture
- Easy room placement
- Ideal where simplicity matters
Two Era 300 Speakers
- Dedicated left and right channels
- Much wider stereo soundstage
- Greater scale and output
- More precise conventional stereo imaging
- Can also form a premium rear-surround pair
- Matching positioning recommended
Create a Stereo Pair
Two Era 300 speakers can be bonded together through the Sonos app so one operates as the dedicated left channel and the other as the right.
This is the better arrangement for listeners who want a more traditional stereo soundstage rather than relying entirely on the broad dispersion of a single speaker.
Era 300 Versus Era 100
Era 100 and Era 300 share many Sonos conveniences, but they are designed for different levels of music and spatial performance.
Era 100
- Smaller and easier to place
- Two angled tweeters
- One midwoofer
- Single-speaker stereo reproduction
- WiFi and Bluetooth
- Optional line-in
- Excellent compact multi-room speaker
Era 300
- Larger premium spatial speaker
- Six-driver architecture
- Four tweeters
- Two woofers
- Dedicated upward-firing driver
- Dolby Atmos Music
- Premium Atmos rear-surround capability
The Sonos Era 100 remains the more compact everyday speaker. Era 300 is the step up when spatial audio, scale and Dolby Atmos are priorities.
Era 300 Versus Sonos Five
Sonos Five approaches premium wireless music from a more traditional stereo perspective.
Era 300
- Designed around spatial audio
- Dolby Atmos Music
- Upward and side-firing drivers
- Bluetooth 5.3
- USB-C line-in via adapter
- Premium Atmos rear-surround option
Sonos Five
- Traditional high-output music speaker
- Strong conventional stereo focus
- Larger sealed acoustic architecture
- Built-in 3.5mm analogue line input
- No Bluetooth audio
- No standalone Dolby Atmos Music architecture
The Sonos Five remains worth considering if conventional stereo music is the overriding priority. Era 300 is the more flexible choice for spatial music and immersive home cinema.
WiFi 6
Era 300 supports WiFi 6 and compatible 2.4GHz and 5GHz network connections.
WiFi remains the preferred route for everyday Sonos listening because music can stream directly to the speaker without being continuously routed through your phone.
Why WiFi Is the Main Sonos Connection
When streaming over WiFi, your phone or tablet effectively acts as the controller rather than the permanent audio source.
This allows normal phone calls and notifications to occur without necessarily interrupting playback and enables synchronised multi-room audio throughout the Sonos system.
Bluetooth 5.3
Era 300 also includes Bluetooth 5.3.
A dedicated rear pairing button allows compatible phones, tablets and computers to connect directly without needing the particular music app or service to be integrated into Sonos.
WiFi Setup Is Required Before Bluetooth
Era 300 cannot initially be treated as a completely independent Bluetooth speaker.
Sonos requires the speaker to be configured through the Sonos app on a WiFi network first. Once that initial setup is complete, Bluetooth can be used whenever required.
Set Up Era 300 on WiFi First
Bluetooth becomes available after Era 300 has been added to a Sonos system. Complete the normal Sonos app setup before attempting to use the speaker solely from a Bluetooth source.
Apple AirPlay 2
AirPlay 2 allows compatible iPhone, iPad and Mac users to send audio directly to Era 300 over WiFi.
This is especially useful for audio apps that you want to play immediately without navigating through the Sonos app.
Sonos Multi-Room Audio
Era 300 can operate independently or be grouped with compatible Sonos speakers elsewhere in the home.
Different rooms can play different content, or multiple rooms can be grouped for synchronised music.
USB-C Line-In Capability
The USB-C connection on the rear of Era 300 can provide analogue line-in when used with a compatible Sonos adapter.
This allows traditional audio sources to join the Sonos system, including:
- Turntables with built-in phono stages
- Turntables through external phono stages
- CD players
- Cassette decks
- Tuners
- Portable audio players
- Other suitable line-level sources
Sonos Line-In Adapter
The Sonos Era Line-In USB-C Adapter converts the USB-C connection into a 3.5mm analogue input.
The adapter and appropriate auxiliary or RCA-to-3.5mm cable are sold separately.
Sonos Combo Adapter
The optional Combo Adapter can add both analogue line-in and wired Ethernet connectivity through the USB-C connection.
This is useful where Era 300 needs a wired network connection as well as access to a traditional audio source.
The USB-C Socket Is Not a Conventional USB Audio Input
Era 300's USB-C port is intended for compatible Sonos adapters. Do not assume that connecting a computer or USB audio source directly with a normal USB-C cable will provide plug-and-play digital audio.
Connect a Turntable
A turntable can be connected to Era 300 through the optional Line-In or Combo Adapter.
The turntable signal must already be at line level, which means using either:
- A turntable with an integrated phono stage
- A separate external phono preamplifier
No Built-In Phono Stage
Era 300 cannot accept the very low-level signal directly from a conventional moving magnet or moving coil cartridge. Use a suitable phono stage between the turntable and the Sonos line input unless the turntable already has one built in.
Share Your Turntable Through Sonos
Once an analogue source enters Era 300, it can be selected within the wider Sonos system.
This means a record can play through Era 300 itself or be sent to compatible grouped Sonos products elsewhere around the home.
Connect a CD Player
A CD player with analogue outputs can also connect using the Line-In Adapter and an appropriate cable.
This allows physical discs to become part of the same multi-room Sonos system as streaming services.
Line-In Is Disabled in Surround Mode
When Era 300 is configured as a dedicated home cinema rear surround speaker, Sonos disables its normal analogue line-in function.
Bluetooth audio and independent AirPlay operation are also disabled while the speakers are bonded as surrounds.
Surround Speakers Become Part of the Cinema Room
If you regularly use Era 300's line-in or Bluetooth connection, remember that those functions are unavailable while the speaker is acting as a dedicated Sonos rear surround. Remove it from the surround configuration to restore normal standalone operation.
Trueplay Room Tuning
Era 300's multidirectional design makes its relationship with the room particularly important.
Trueplay measures how walls, furniture and other surfaces affect the sound and adjusts the speaker's equalisation accordingly.
Quick Trueplay Tuning
Quick Tuning uses Era 300's own built-in microphones to analyse its immediate acoustic environment.
It is available through compatible iOS and Android devices and provides a straightforward route to optimising the speaker without walking around the room.
Advanced Trueplay Tuning
Compatible iOS users can also choose Advanced Tuning.
This uses the microphone in the iPhone or iPad while the user moves through the listening area, allowing Sonos to take a more detailed measurement across the room.
Quick Tuning
- Compatible with iOS and Android
- Uses Era 300's own microphones
- Fast and convenient
- Suitable for single speakers and stereo pairs
- Useful after changing speaker position
Advanced Tuning
- Compatible iOS devices required
- Uses the phone or tablet microphone
- Measures across the listening area
- Provides more detailed room analysis
- Useful once final placement is established
Placement Matters More With Era 300
Because Era 300 deliberately sends sound towards the sides and ceiling, surrounding space is important.
Sonos recommends allowing approximately 610mm of overhead clearance for optimum dispersion.
When positioned close to a wall or on furniture, allow at least 25mm behind the speaker and approximately 203mm at each side.
Don't Put Era 300 Deep Inside a Bookshelf
An enclosed shelf can obstruct the sideways and upward-firing acoustic paths that make Era 300 different from a conventional speaker.
Sonos therefore advises against placing Era 300 inside a confined bookshelf or cabinet where its multidirectional dispersion is restricted.
Give the Drivers Space to Work
Era 300 is not a conventional front-firing box. Avoid enclosing the top and sides if you want to hear the full benefit of its spatial-audio architecture.
Wall Mounting Near the Ceiling
Sonos provides a specific recommendation for unusually high wall-mounted positions.
If Era 300 is mounted within approximately 610mm of the ceiling, Sonos advises installing it upside down so the directional acoustic arrangement operates more appropriately in that position.
For ordinary tabletop or stand placement, use the normal orientation.
Do Not Position Era 300 Vertically
Era 300's unusual cabinet may tempt experimentation with different orientations, but Sonos specifically warns against placing it vertically or at a steep unsupported angle.
The acoustic system expects the speaker to operate in its designed horizontal orientation.
Dedicated Era 300 Stand
The Sonos Era 300 Speaker Stand provides a purpose-designed floor position at seated listening height.
This is particularly useful for stereo pairs or rear-surround installations where existing furniture does not place the speakers correctly.
Dedicated Era 300 Wall Mount
The Sonos Era 300 Wall Mount offers a more permanent installation where floor space is limited.
Use the mount's allowed adjustment range rather than forcing the speaker into unsupported angles.
Era 300 as Dolby Atmos Rear Surrounds
This is one of the strongest reasons to choose Era 300 over a simpler Sonos rear speaker.
Used as a matching pair behind the listening position, Era 300 can reproduce both lateral and overhead surround information from compatible Dolby Atmos soundtracks.
This means the rear of the room gains its own spatial-audio architecture rather than relying solely on the front soundbar to create the entire height and surround field.
Era 300 With Arc Ultra
Sonos currently offers complete systems combining a pair of Era 300 speakers with Arc Ultra.
Arc Ultra handles the front soundstage while Era 300 adds premium physical surround and height information behind the listener.
Add Sub 4 and the result is currently Sonos' most ambitious complete wireless home cinema configuration.
Era 300 With Beam (Gen 2)
A pair can also be used with Sonos Beam (Gen 2).
This creates an interesting system in which the compact front soundbar is supported by much more physically substantial spatial rear channels.
Why Era 300 Rear Speakers Are Different
A more conventional surround speaker primarily reproduces information from behind or beside the listener.
Era 300's upward and side-firing drivers additionally allow it to contribute to the vertical and lateral parts of an Atmos sound field.
This makes it particularly effective for films where effects move from front to rear or travel above the seating position.
Home Cinema Orientation
When two Era 300 speakers are used as surrounds, install both speakers in the same orientation and place them behind and to the left and right of the normal listening area.
Consistent placement gives the Sonos processing and Trueplay system a much more sensible acoustic foundation.
Add Sonos Sub
Era 300 can also form part of music and home cinema systems with compatible Sonos Sub products.
The Sonos Sub Mini provides a compact bass extension option, while Sonos Sub 4 offers greater depth and output for larger systems.
Why Add a Subwoofer?
Era 300 already produces substantial bass from its two woofers, but a dedicated Sub can extend response considerably lower and increase overall system headroom.
Once a Sub is added, Era 300 can concentrate more of its available output on the frequencies above the crossover region.
Sonos Voice Control
Era 300 includes far-field microphones for compatible voice operation.
Sonos Voice Control provides hands-free control of supported music playback, volume and Sonos functions.
Amazon Alexa
Amazon Alexa is also supported where available, allowing compatible smart-home functions and other Alexa services to operate from the speaker.
Two Levels of Microphone Privacy
The top-panel voice-services control allows voice assistants to be switched off without disabling every microphone-dependent feature.
A physical switch on the rear goes further and disconnects microphone power entirely.
Voice Control and Trueplay Are Separate
If you want voice assistants disabled but still want microphone-based Quick Trueplay tuning, leave the rear microphone hardware switch enabled and disable voice services using the top control.
Capacitive Touch Controls
Controls on the top of Era 300 provide quick access without opening the Sonos app.
You can:
- Play and pause
- Adjust volume
- Skip forwards
- Return to the previous track
- Group with compatible Sonos rooms
- Control voice services
Dedicated Volume Slider
The recessed touch slider allows smooth volume changes by swiping across the control area.
Plus and minus touch points also provide a more conventional way of making smaller adjustments.
Humidity Resistant
Era 300 is designed to cope with humid indoor environments, broadening the range of rooms in which it can be used.
It remains a mains-powered indoor product rather than a weatherproof portable speaker.
Humidity Resistant Does Not Mean Waterproof
Do not expose Era 300 to rain, splashing water or other direct moisture. It is intended for indoor mains-powered use.
Distinctive Hourglass Cabinet
The unusual cinched shape is driven by the need to angle the six drivers in different directions rather than simply being a styling exercise.
The proportions and perforations around the enclosure help the acoustic system distribute sound forwards, sideways and upwards.
Dimensions and Weight
- Height: 160mm
- Width: 260mm
- Depth: 185mm
- Weight: 4.42kg
Black or White
Era 300 is available in Black and White with a matte finish.
Matching stands and wall mounts are also available in corresponding finishes for a consistent installation.
Quad-Core Processor
Sonos currently specifies a quad-core processor using four A55 cores running at 1.9GHz.
The processing platform supports spatial audio rendering, network operation, Trueplay, voice functions and the wider Sonos software environment.
40% Post-Consumer Recycled Plastics
Sonos specifies Era 300 as using 40% post-consumer recycled plastics in its construction.
The packaging is also designed around paper-based materials sourced from recyclable and responsibly managed sources.
