Sonos Roam 2 Portable Waterproof WiFi and Bluetooth Speaker

Audio T Verdict

Sonos Roam 2 is the genuinely portable member of the Sonos family. At only 0.43kg it is small enough to throw into a bag, carry around the garden or take on holiday, yet when it comes home and reconnects to WiFi it becomes another proper Sonos room alongside the rest of your system.

The second-generation model makes considerably more sense as a portable speaker than the original Roam because Bluetooth now works straight out of the box. You can switch it on, pair your phone and start listening without having to complete a Sonos WiFi setup first. Set it up in the Sonos app later and you gain the features that make Roam 2 more interesting than an ordinary Bluetooth speaker, including multi-room playback, AirPlay 2, Sound Swap, voice control and the ability to share a Bluetooth source with other Sonos rooms while at home.

It is also a properly rugged little thing. IP67 protection means dust cannot get inside and the speaker can survive temporary immersion in water, while Automatic Trueplay continually adjusts the sound when you move it between the kitchen, garden, bedroom or somewhere completely different. Move 2 provides considerably more scale and battery life, but if the priority is maximum portability without giving up Sonos integration, Roam 2 is the obvious choice.

Sonos Roam 2 Portable Waterproof WiFi and Bluetooth Speaker

Sonos Roam 2 combines a compact battery-powered Bluetooth speaker with the network and multi-room capabilities of a Sonos smart speaker.

Two Class-H digital amplifiers power a dedicated tweeter and midwoofer, while Automatic Trueplay uses the built-in microphone array to continually adapt the sound according to the speaker's surroundings and the content being played.

Bluetooth provides straightforward portable listening anywhere, while connecting Roam 2 to WiFi unlocks Sonos multi-room playback, streaming services, Apple AirPlay 2, Sound Swap and wider system control.

Bluetooth First, Sonos When You Want It

One of the most important changes with Roam 2 is the way Bluetooth setup works.

You do not need to configure the speaker on a home WiFi network before using it as a basic Bluetooth speaker.

Switch Roam 2 on, hold the dedicated Bluetooth button, select the speaker from your phone or tablet's Bluetooth menu and you can start listening immediately.

Why This Matters

The original Roam was fundamentally a Sonos product first and a portable Bluetooth speaker second, with WiFi setup required before Bluetooth could be used normally.

Roam 2 removes that friction.

This means it makes much more sense as a gift, travel speaker or occasional portable speaker even before the owner decides whether to integrate it into a wider Sonos system.

Bluetooth Works Straight From the Box

If you only want to play some music from your phone, you can do that immediately. Sonos app and WiFi setup are required when you want Roam 2 to become part of a Sonos system, not for its first Bluetooth connection.

Bluetooth 5.2

Sonos currently specifies Bluetooth 5.2 for direct wireless audio streaming from a compatible phone, tablet or computer.

A dedicated Bluetooth button on the rear separates pairing from the speaker's power control, making operation more straightforward than on the original Roam.

How to Pair Bluetooth

  1. Switch Roam 2 on.
  2. Press and hold the rear Bluetooth button for approximately one second.
  3. Wait for the pairing tone and flashing blue status light.
  4. Open the Bluetooth settings on your phone, tablet or computer.
  5. Select Sonos Roam 2.
  6. Wait for the confirmation tone and solid blue status indication.

Bluetooth Away From Home

Once paired, Roam 2 operates as a conventional portable Bluetooth speaker when there is no familiar WiFi network available.

This makes it suitable for:

  • Holidays
  • Hotel rooms
  • Picnics
  • Camping
  • The garden
  • Days at the beach
  • Workspaces
  • Trips in the car

WiFi Unlocks the Full Sonos Experience

Bluetooth is only one side of Roam 2.

Once added to a Sonos system over WiFi, it behaves much more like the company's mains-powered speakers.

You gain:

  • Sonos app control
  • Direct music-service streaming
  • Sonos Radio
  • Multi-room grouping
  • Apple AirPlay 2
  • Sound Swap
  • Bluetooth audio sharing with other Sonos rooms
  • Stereo pairing
  • System settings and EQ adjustment

Why WiFi Is Better at Home

When listening through WiFi, the phone acts as the controller rather than remaining the permanent audio connection.

The music can therefore continue if you move around the house, receive a notification or use the phone for another task.

WiFi also provides the synchronised multi-room functionality that distinguishes Roam 2 from a conventional portable Bluetooth speaker.

2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi

Sonos currently specifies Roam 2 for compatible 802.11a/b/g/n/ac networks across suitable 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi bands.

This gives it flexibility across modern home network environments without requiring an Ethernet connection.

No Ethernet Connection

Roam 2 is designed around wireless portability and does not provide a wired Ethernet socket.

At home it connects to the network over WiFi, while Bluetooth handles direct portable playback.

No Analogue Line-In

Roam 2's USB-C connection is documented by Sonos for charging rather than analogue source integration.

Unlike Era 100, Era 300, Move 2 and selected other Sonos models, Roam 2 is not specified for use with the Sonos Line-In Adapter.

If a turntable, CD player or other analogue source needs to enter your Sonos system, use a compatible product such as Era 100, Era 300, Five, Move 2 or Port instead.

USB-C Is for Charging

Do not buy the Sonos Line-In Adapter expecting to add a turntable or CD player directly to Roam 2. Sonos currently documents the Roam 2 USB-C connection as a charging port rather than a line-in interface.

Two Class-H Digital Amplifiers

Roam 2 contains two Class-H digital amplifier channels individually tuned to its compact acoustic architecture.

One amplifier drives the tweeter and the other the midwoofer, allowing Sonos to optimise each part of the frequency range independently.

Dedicated Tweeter

A single tweeter handles high-frequency information.

Its role is to maintain clarity and detail from a cabinet small enough to hold comfortably in one hand.

Dedicated Midwoofer

The midwoofer reproduces the majority of voices, instruments and low-frequency information.

Sonos uses digital processing and cabinet tuning to maximise useful bass output from the limited physical enclosure.

Mono Speaker Architecture

A single Roam 2 uses one tweeter and one midwoofer rather than separate left and right acoustic arrays.

It therefore behaves as a compact single-speaker music source rather than attempting to create the wider single-box stereo presentation offered by Move 2 or Era 100.

Create a Roam 2 Stereo Pair

Two matching Roam 2 speakers can be paired within a Sonos WiFi system to provide dedicated left and right channels.

This creates greater scale and a more conventional stereo image when both speakers are being used together at home.

Stereo Pairing Is a Sonos WiFi Feature

Set up both Roam 2 speakers in the Sonos app and create the pair there. Normal Bluetooth pairing to one phone should not be confused with Sonos stereo pairing.

Automatic Trueplay

A portable speaker can sound very different every time it is moved.

Place Roam 2 close to a wall and bass can become stronger. Take it outdoors and the lack of surrounding boundaries changes the balance again.

Automatic Trueplay is designed specifically to deal with this.

Trueplay Continuously Retunes Roam 2

The built-in microphone array analyses the speaker's surroundings while audio is playing.

Roam 2 can then automatically adjust its tonal response as the location and programme material change.

There is no need to walk around the room carrying a phone for a conventional Trueplay measurement.

Automatic Trueplay Works Over Bluetooth

Automatic Trueplay operates in both WiFi and Bluetooth modes.

This is particularly useful when Roam 2 is being used away from the home network, where acoustic conditions may be changing most frequently.

Microphones Must Be Enabled

Automatic Trueplay relies on Roam 2's microphone array.

If the microphones are muted, automatic acoustic tuning cannot operate until they are switched back on.

Trueplay Is Automatic

Move Roam 2 from the kitchen to the garden and simply start playing. With Automatic Trueplay enabled and the microphones active, the speaker handles its own acoustic adjustment.

Far-Field Microphone Array

The microphone system also supports hands-free voice control.

Advanced beamforming helps focus on commands while multichannel echo cancellation reduces interference from the speaker's own playback.

Sonos Voice Control

Once Roam 2 is configured as part of a compatible Sonos system, Sonos Voice Control can provide hands-free control of supported music and system functions.

Availability depends on language, service and region.

Amazon Alexa

Amazon Alexa is also supported where available.

This allows Roam 2 to perform compatible Alexa functions when the speaker is connected appropriately and the relevant account has been configured.

Microphone Mute

A physical button on the speaker allows the microphone system to be muted.

The microphone status light provides a clear visual indication of whether voice listening is active.

Tactile Physical Controls

Roam 2 uses physical buttons rather than a capacitive touch surface.

This is a sensible choice for something designed to be picked up, packed into bags and used outside, where accidental touches could otherwise interrupt playback.

The controls provide access to:

  • Play and pause
  • Volume up
  • Volume down
  • Skip
  • Replay
  • Microphone mute
  • Bluetooth pairing
  • Sleep and power functions

Dedicated Power Button

The rear power button can wake Roam 2, put it into sleep mode or shut the speaker down completely.

A short press puts the speaker into sleep, while holding the button for at least five seconds powers it off fully.

Up to 10 Hours of Playback

Sonos rates Roam 2 for up to 10 hours of continuous playback from a full charge at moderate listening levels.

Actual battery life varies according to volume, Bluetooth or WiFi use, environmental temperature and other operating conditions.

18Wh Rechargeable Battery

Current Sonos charging documentation specifies an 18Wh rechargeable battery.

The current Roam 2 sales specification also lists a nominal capacity of 5000mAh.

Sleep Mode Can Last Up to 10 Days

When Roam 2 is running from its battery and is not playing audio, it automatically enters sleep mode after approximately 30 minutes.

In sleep mode, Sonos specifies battery life of up to 10 days.

This means the speaker can remain ready to wake without consuming battery at the same rate as normal operation.

Sleep Is Not the Same as Power Off

A quick press of the power button puts Roam 2 to sleep.

To switch it off completely, hold the power button for at least five seconds until the shutdown tone is heard and the status light goes out.

Power Off for Longer Storage

If Roam 2 will not be used for an extended period, fully powering it off rather than leaving it in sleep mode can conserve more battery.

USB-C Charging

A 1.2m USB-C to USB-C charging cable is supplied with Roam 2.

A mains USB-C power adapter is not included.

Sonos specifies a minimum compatible supply of 7.5W and recommends a 5V / 2A 10W adapter for the fastest normal charging performance.

0 to 50% in About One Hour

With a suitable USB-C power supply, Sonos states that Roam can charge from empty to approximately 50% in around one hour.

Actual charging time depends on the adapter and battery condition.

Roam 2 Does Not Support Fast Charging

Sonos specifically states that Roam products do not support Fast, Turbo or PPS charging modes.

A very high-powered modern USB-C charger may still work if it provides the appropriate standard USB output, but it will not make Roam 2 charge at laptop-style fast-charging speeds.

A 5W Charger May Not Be Enough

Older 5V / 1A USB phone chargers can be underpowered for Roam 2 and may trigger an insufficient-power warning. Sonos recommends a 10W 5V / 2A adapter for fastest normal charging.

Qi Wireless Charging

Roam 2 can also charge wirelessly using a compatible Qi-certified charging pad.

This means it does not require the proprietary Sonos charger simply to use wireless charging.

Sonos Roam Wireless Charger

The separately sold Sonos Roam Wireless Charger is designed specifically around the shape of the speaker and holds Roam 2 magnetically in the correct charging position.

Sonos supplies a suitable 10W adapter with its dedicated charging accessory.

0 to 50% in About Two Hours Wirelessly

Using the Sonos Wireless Charger, the company specifies approximately two hours to charge Roam from empty to 50%.

USB-C is therefore faster when charging speed matters.

Wireless Charger Is Not Weatherproof

Roam 2 itself is waterproof, but its charging accessories are not.

Both the USB charging cable and wireless charger should be used indoors and kept dry.

Dry Roam 2 Before Charging

After outdoor or wet use, make sure the USB-C socket, charging cable and wireless charging surfaces are completely dry and free of dirt before connecting the speaker to power.

IP67 Waterproof and Dustproof

Roam 2 carries an IP67 ingress-protection rating.

The first digit means it is protected against dust ingress.

The second digit provides protection against temporary immersion in water.

Up to One Metre of Water

Sonos specifies that Roam 2 can survive being submerged in up to approximately one metre of fresh water for up to 30 minutes.

This gives it substantially greater water protection than Move 2's IP56 rating.

Waterproof Does Not Mean Indestructible

IP67 protects against accidental freshwater immersion under specified test conditions. Avoid prolonged underwater use, high-pressure water and unnecessary exposure to salt water.

Avoid Salt Water Where Possible

Sonos specifically advises against environments where Roam may be exposed to salt water.

If you take it to the coast, keep it away from direct seawater exposure even though the speaker itself is designed for outdoor use.

Drying Roam 2

If the speaker gets wet, wipe it with a dry cloth or towel and allow it to air dry.

Do not use a hair dryer or other forced hot-air source, which can damage the finish or internal construction.

Outdoor Use

Roam 2 is designed for temporary outdoor listening rather than permanent installation outside.

Use it in the garden, on the patio or on trips, then store it indoors when listening is finished.

Drop-Resistant Construction

Shock-absorbing materials and a durable finish help protect Roam 2 from the knocks and tumbles associated with portable use.

Silicone sections also help cushion the cabinet when it is placed down or accidentally bumped.

Scratch and Scuff Resistance

The matte exterior is designed to tolerate everyday handling more successfully than a delicate indoor hi-fi finish.

Normal care is still worthwhile, particularly if the speaker is packed into a bag alongside keys or other hard objects.

Upright or Horizontal Placement

Roam 2 can be used standing vertically or lying horizontally.

Vertical positioning occupies very little surface area, while horizontal placement provides greater stability on uneven or vibration-prone surfaces.

The Sound Adapts to Placement

Automatic Trueplay helps compensate as the speaker changes position and acoustic environment.

This allows the choice between upright and horizontal placement to be based largely on convenience and stability.

Small Enough to Take Almost Anywhere

Roam 2 measures just:

  • Height: 168mm
  • Width: 62mm
  • Depth: 60mm
  • Weight: 0.43kg

It weighs comfortably under half a kilogram, making it dramatically easier to carry than Move 2.

Roam 2 or Move 2?

Sonos Move 2 is the more powerful portable model, but the two products are aimed at different types of portability.

Sonos Roam 2

  • 0.43kg
  • 168mm tall
  • Up to 10 hours battery
  • IP67 waterproof
  • Easy to carry in a bag
  • Qi wireless charging
  • One tweeter and one midwoofer
  • Maximum portability

Sonos Move 2

  • 3.0kg
  • Much larger acoustic system
  • Up to 24 hours battery
  • IP56 weather resistance
  • Two tweeters and one midwoofer
  • Single-speaker stereo reproduction
  • Charging Base included
  • More suitable for house and garden

Which Portable Sonos Speaker Should You Choose?

Choose Roam 2 if the speaker will regularly go into luggage, a backpack or simply travel around with you.

Choose Move 2 if most of the movement will be between rooms, the patio and the garden and you value greater scale, bass and battery life more than minimum weight.

Roam 2 or Era 100?

Era 100 is a mains-powered indoor speaker rather than a portable model.

Roam 2

  • Rechargeable battery
  • IP67 waterproof
  • Very compact
  • Outdoor use
  • Automatic Trueplay
  • Bluetooth straight from the box
  • Qi wireless charging
  • No analogue line-in

Era 100

  • Mains powered
  • Indoor room speaker
  • Larger acoustic system
  • Single-speaker stereo sound
  • Optional analogue line-in
  • WiFi 6
  • Bluetooth 5.3
  • Suitable for supported surround systems

Sound Swap

Sound Swap allows supported Sonos audio to move between Roam 2 and a nearby compatible Sonos product without opening the app.

Bring Roam 2 close to the other speaker and hold Play/Pause until the appropriate confirmation tones are heard.

Audio can either be pulled from the other speaker onto Roam 2 or pushed from Roam 2 onto another eligible Sonos product.

Take the Music With You

Imagine music playing through Era 100 in the kitchen.

Before heading into the garden, bring Roam 2 near the speaker, perform Sound Swap and the programme transfers to the portable speaker.

When you come back inside, the process can be reversed.

Sound Swap Limitations

Not every source can be transferred using Sound Swap.

Sonos specifically excludes:

  • Bluetooth audio
  • Apple AirPlay audio
  • TV audio

Sound Swap also has compatibility restrictions with several older Sonos products and Port.

Sound Swap and Grouping Are Different

Sound Swap transfers playback from one speaker to another. If you want both products playing at the same time, group the rooms through Sonos instead.

Share Bluetooth Audio With Your Sonos System

There is an important distinction between Sound Swap and Bluetooth sharing.

When Roam 2 has been configured on your home WiFi and remains connected to the Sonos system, a Bluetooth source playing through Roam 2 can be shared with other grouped Sonos rooms.

This effectively lets Roam 2 act as the Bluetooth entry point for a wider Sonos system.

Why Bluetooth Sharing Is Useful

A visiting friend can pair their phone to Roam 2 by Bluetooth without needing their music service added to your Sonos account.

While Roam 2 remains on your home WiFi, you can group other rooms and have the Bluetooth audio play throughout the house.

WiFi Setup Is Required for Bluetooth Sharing

Bluetooth itself works straight out of the box, but sharing that Bluetooth signal with other Sonos rooms requires Roam 2 to have been added to the Sonos system and remain connected over WiFi.

Apple AirPlay 2

When Roam 2 is connected to WiFi, compatible iPhone, iPad and Mac users can send audio directly with Apple AirPlay 2.

This provides another convenient route to apps and content already open on an Apple device.

AirPlay Is a WiFi Feature

AirPlay 2 depends on network connectivity and is therefore intended primarily for Roam 2's home WiFi mode rather than use away from the network.

Sonos Multi-Room Audio

Once Roam 2 has been added to the Sonos system, it can play independently or be grouped with compatible products around the home.

The same music can follow you between rooms or different Sonos areas can play completely different content.

Sonos Radio

Setting Roam 2 up through the Sonos app also provides access to Sonos Radio and compatible radio services within the wider platform.

As with other Sonos network streaming, the phone becomes the controller rather than continuously supplying the audio itself.

No Sonos Sub Pairing

Portable Roam products are not designed to bond with Sonos Sub or Sub Mini as a conventional speaker-and-subwoofer room.

Roam 2 is intended to provide its own complete portable frequency range.

Roam 2 Cannot Be Paired With a Sonos Sub

If you want a fixed Sonos music system with dedicated wireless subwoofer integration, choose a compatible mains-powered product such as Era 100, Era 300 or Five.

Current Sonos App Required for WiFi Features

Roam 2 requires the current Sonos app when it is being added to a Sonos WiFi system.

It is not compatible with the legacy Sonos S1 Controller.

Useful in Older Sonos Homes?

If your existing system contains older S1-only Sonos products, Roam 2 cannot simply join that legacy S1 household.

Check the wider system's app compatibility before purchasing Roam 2 specifically for multi-room integration.

Five Manufacturer Finishes

Sonos currently offers Roam 2 in five named finishes:

  • Black
  • White
  • Olive
  • Sunset
  • Wave

Audio T availability can vary, so check the selectable options on the product page or contact your local store.

Operating Temperature

Sonos specifies an operating temperature range of approximately 5°C to 35°C.

The IP67 rating provides protection from water and dust but does not mean the internal battery is unaffected by extreme heat or cold.

Extreme Temperatures and Battery Life

Very cold or very hot conditions can reduce available battery performance.

Although Sonos designs Roam 2 for outdoor adventures, avoid leaving it for prolonged periods in an extremely hot car, direct intense heat or freezing conditions beyond its stated operating range.

Quad-Core Processor

Sonos specifies a quad-core 1.4GHz A53 processor.

This handles wireless networking, Automatic Trueplay, voice functions, multi-room synchronisation and the wider Sonos software environment.

What Comes in the Box?

  • Sonos Roam 2
  • 1.2m USB-C to USB-C charging cable
  • Quickstart Guide
  • Legal and warranty documentation

A USB-C mains power adapter and wireless charging pad are not included.

Power Adapter Not Included

Roam 2 includes the USB-C charging cable but not a mains USB-C adapter. Sonos recommends a suitable 10W 5V / 2A adapter for fastest normal charging.
