Audio T Verdict
Sonos Move 2 is the speaker for anyone who wants the full Sonos experience at home without permanently leaving the music in one room. On its charging base it behaves much like a conventional Sonos network speaker, but lift it by the integrated handle and the 24-hour battery, Bluetooth connection and IP56 construction let the same system move into the garden, onto the patio or away with you for the day.
The second generation is much more than a battery update. Two angled tweeters replace the single tweeter of the original Move, allowing one Move 2 to produce genuine left and right stereo information, while the dedicated midwoofer provides the scale and bass weight expected from a speaker considerably larger than Roam 2. Automatic Trueplay continuously adapts the balance when the speaker is moved, which is particularly useful for a product whose whole purpose is changing location.
It is also unusually flexible. WiFi 6 handles normal Sonos multi-room listening, Bluetooth 5.3 provides straightforward direct playback away from home, USB-C can charge another portable device and optional Sonos adapters add analogue line-in or Ethernet. At 3kg it is transportable rather than pocket-sized, but for moving serious Sonos sound between the house, garden and occasional trips away, Move 2 is a very complete solution.

Stereo Sound From One Portable Speaker
Move 2 uses two tweeters instead of the single tweeter fitted to the first-generation Move.
The drivers are angled away from one another so that left and right high-frequency information can be projected in different directions.
This allows a single Move 2 to create a more convincing stereo presentation than a conventional mono portable speaker.
Two Angled Tweeters
The two tweeters handle high-frequency information and help create physical separation between the left and right channels.
This matters especially when Move 2 is used by itself, which will be the most common arrangement for a portable speaker.
One Dedicated Midwoofer
A dedicated midwoofer reproduces voices, instruments and low-frequency information.
It operates within a sealed enclosure and works with Sonos digital signal processing to produce the deep and controlled bass response associated with Move 2's relatively substantial cabinet.
Three Class-D Amplifiers
Three Class-D digital amplifiers are tuned specifically for Move 2's acoustic system.
The amplification, drivers and processing are designed as one complete system rather than as separate components, allowing Sonos to optimise the response around the cabinet and intended portable use.
Automatic Trueplay
Automatic Trueplay is particularly well suited to Move 2 because the speaker is likely to change position regularly.
Its built-in microphones analyse the surrounding acoustic environment while music is playing and the speaker continually adjusts its tonal balance accordingly.
Move Move 2 from a kitchen counter to a patio table and the system can automatically retune itself without requiring a manual measurement with a phone.
Trueplay Works on WiFi and Bluetooth
Automatic Trueplay can operate when Move 2 is playing over either WiFi or Bluetooth.
This means the room-tuning system does not disappear simply because the speaker has been taken away from the home Sonos network.
Keep the Microphones Enabled for Automatic Trueplay
Automatic Trueplay requires Move 2's microphone hardware to be active. If the physical microphone switch on the rear is turned off, automatic room tuning and voice-control functions are unavailable until the microphones are re-enabled.
No Manual Trueplay Walkaround Required
Unlike many fixed Sonos speakers, Move 2 does not rely on you walking around the room with an iPhone or iPad for everyday tuning.
The microphone array inside the speaker performs the automatic measurement itself.
This is a far more practical approach for a product designed to be carried between different locations.
24-Hour Battery Life
Move 2 provides up to 24 hours of continuous playback from a full charge.
This is more than twice the rated playback time of the original Move and means the speaker can cover a full day of listening without returning to its Charging Base.
Actual battery life varies according to volume, wireless connection, environmental temperature, settings and the type of content being played.
44Wh Rechargeable Battery
Sonos specifies Move 2 with a 44Wh lithium-ion battery.
The current product specification also gives a capacity of 3100mAh.
The battery is integrated securely into the speaker but can be replaced when it eventually reaches the end of its useful service life.
Replaceable Battery
Move 2 has been designed so its rechargeable battery can be replaced rather than making battery deterioration the end of the speaker's useful life.
Sonos sells a dedicated replacement battery kit separately.
Expected Battery Lifespan
Sonos estimates the battery lifespan at approximately three years or around 900 charge cycles, although actual life depends on usage and environmental conditions.
Leaving Move 2 on its Charging Base during normal home use is not expected to reduce the battery's lifespan.
Leave It on the Charging Base at Home
You do not need to repeatedly remove Move 2 from the Charging Base once it reaches 100%. The system manages normal charging behaviour, so the base can become the speaker's everyday home position.
Charging Base Included
Move 2 includes its dedicated Charging Base in the box.
Simply place the speaker onto the base so the charging contacts align and it begins recharging without needing to plug a cable into the speaker itself.
This makes Move 2 behave much like a conventional mains-powered Sonos speaker when it is being used around the house.
Approximately Three-Hour Full Charge
Sonos specifies approximately three hours for a full battery charge when Move 2 is placed on its Charging Base.
Charging time can vary according to battery state and the power source being used.
Charging Base Is for Indoor Use
Move 2 itself is designed for outdoor listening, but the Charging Base is not weather resistant.
Keep the base indoors and make sure both the speaker and charging contacts are dry and free of dirt before returning Move 2 to charge.
Do Not Leave the Charging Base Outside
The speaker and charging base have different environmental ratings. Move 2 can be used outdoors, but the Charging Base should remain indoors and dry.
USB-C Charging
Move 2 can also be charged directly through its rear USB-C connection.
This is useful when travelling because you do not necessarily need to pack the Charging Base.
Sonos recommends a compliant USB Power Delivery supply rated at 45W or higher.
45W USB-C PD Power
The supplied power adapter is a 45W USB-C PD unit.
A compatible third-party USB-C PD supply rated at 45W or greater can also be used where appropriate.
Use a Suitable USB-C PD Charger
A basic low-power phone charger is not an appropriate substitute. Use a USB-C Power Delivery supply meeting Sonos' recommended 45W or greater specification for Move 2 charging.
Charge Your Phone From Move 2
The USB-C connection can also provide power to a compatible portable device.
This can be useful outdoors or away from a mains outlet when a phone needs a top-up and Move 2 still has battery capacity available.
Remember that charging another device will naturally reduce the remaining playback time available from Move 2's own battery.
Built-In Carrying Handle
A recessed handle is integrated into the rear of the cabinet.
This allows the 3kg speaker to be carried securely from room to room without adding a separate strap or external handle.
Portable, Rather Than Pocket-Sized
Move 2 is much larger and heavier than Sonos Roam 2.
At approximately 3kg, it is designed to be moved around the home, garden or taken away by car rather than carried around all day in a rucksack.
Move 2
- Larger portable speaker
- 3kg weight
- Up to 24 hours battery life
- Three amplifiers
- Two tweeters
- One midwoofer
- Built-in carrying handle
- IP56 water and dust resistance
- Charging Base included
Roam 2
- Far smaller portable speaker
- Much easier to carry in a bag
- Up to 10 hours battery life
- IP67 waterproof design
- Better suited to lightweight travel
- USB-C charging
- WiFi and Bluetooth
- Lower output and bass scale
IP56 Water and Dust Resistance
Move 2 carries an IP56 rating.
This means it has been designed to resist dust ingress and everyday exposure to water such as splashes, rain and accidental spills.
That makes it far more suitable for patios, gardens and outdoor gatherings than an ordinary indoor wireless speaker.
Move 2 Is Not Waterproof
IP56 does not mean Move 2 can be submerged.
Do not put it in a swimming pool, bath or other body of water, and do not expose it deliberately to continuous pressurised water.
Water Resistant, Not Submersible
Move 2 is built to cope with rain and splashes, not underwater use. If you need a smaller Sonos speaker with an IP67 waterproof rating, consider Roam 2.
Outdoor Use
Move 2 can be taken outside while it is being used.
Its durable enclosure is designed to cope with typical outdoor conditions including rain, dust, humidity and everyday knocks.
Sonos nevertheless recommends storing the speaker indoors rather than leaving it permanently outside in the weather.
Drop-Resistant Construction
Shock-absorbing materials are incorporated into the enclosure to provide additional protection from the sort of accidental bumps and drops that can occur when a portable speaker is moved regularly.
That does not make Move 2 indestructible, so normal care is still sensible.
Use by the Pool
Move 2 is well suited to poolside listening because splashes are within the sort of use its IP56 construction is intended to tolerate.
Keep the speaker a sensible distance from the water's edge and never place it where it could fall into the pool.
Use in the Garden
Garden listening is one of Move 2's strongest applications.
Pick it up from the Charging Base indoors, carry it outside and continue listening without running a mains extension cable across the patio.
Automatic Trueplay Outdoors
Outdoor environments behave acoustically very differently from enclosed rooms because there are fewer nearby surfaces reinforcing the bass and reflecting the midrange and treble.
Automatic Trueplay can respond as Move 2 moves between those environments.
WiFi 6
Move 2 is compatible with WiFi 6 and suitable 2.4GHz or 5GHz networks.
When the speaker is within range of the home network, WiFi provides the most complete Sonos experience.
Why Use WiFi at Home?
WiFi allows music to stream directly to Move 2 rather than continuously through a phone.
This provides access to the Sonos app, synchronised multi-room playback, Apple AirPlay 2 and compatible streaming services while avoiding interruptions from ordinary phone calls and notifications.
Bluetooth 5.3
Move 2 also supports Bluetooth 5.3 for direct audio playback from compatible devices.
A dedicated rear Bluetooth button makes switching and pairing straightforward.
This is particularly useful when Move 2 is taken away from its normal WiFi network.
Initial WiFi Setup Is Still Required
Move 2 must first be configured through the Sonos app on WiFi before normal Bluetooth audio use is available.
Once setup is complete, the speaker can be used over Bluetooth away from the home network.
Complete Sonos Setup Before Going Away
If Move 2 is new, set it up on your home WiFi and confirm Bluetooth operation before taking it somewhere without internet access.
Offline Bluetooth Grouping
Current Sonos software allows compatible portable speakers to be grouped together even when there is no WiFi network available.
A Move 2 or Sonos Play receiving Bluetooth audio can be joined by other compatible portable speakers using the play/pause control.
This makes it possible to create a larger portable listening area at a campsite, holiday property, picnic or other location away from the home network.
Up to Four Compatible Portable Speakers
Current Sonos software supports Bluetooth grouping of up to four compatible Move 2 or Sonos Play portable speakers.
This is a grouped playback feature rather than the same thing as creating a permanent left/right stereo pair in the Sonos app.
Bluetooth Grouping and Stereo Pairing Are Different
A normal stereo pair creates dedicated left and right channels between two matching speakers. Offline Bluetooth grouping is designed to have several compatible portable speakers play together away from WiFi.
Create a Move 2 Stereo Pair
Two Move 2 speakers can be bonded as a proper stereo pair within the Sonos system.
One speaker becomes the dedicated left channel and the other becomes the right, creating a much larger stereo presentation than a single Move 2 can produce on its own.
Matching Move 2 Speakers Required
Sonos stereo pairing requires matching compatible speaker models.
A Move 2 should therefore be paired with another Move 2 rather than with an original Move, Era 100 or Roam 2.
Automatic Trueplay With a Stereo Pair
Automatic Trueplay can continue to operate when two compatible portable speakers are configured as a stereo pair.
The microphones on both speakers need to remain enabled for automatic tuning to function correctly.
Apple AirPlay 2
Move 2 supports Apple AirPlay 2 while connected to WiFi.
Compatible iPhone, iPad and Mac users can send audio directly from supported apps without having to find the same content separately inside the Sonos app.
Sonos Multi-Room Audio
At home, Move 2 operates as a normal room within the wider Sonos system.
It can play independently or be grouped with other Sonos products for synchronised playback around the house.
Bluetooth Audio Can Join the Sonos System
Move 2 can maintain its Sonos network connection while receiving Bluetooth audio in supported circumstances.
This allows a Bluetooth source to become more flexible than a simple one-speaker connection when the speaker is back within its normal Sonos environment.
Optional Analogue Line-In
The USB-C connection also allows Move 2 to accept an analogue line-level source when used with the optional Sonos Line-In Adapter and a suitable 3.5mm audio cable.
Possible sources include:
- Turntables with a built-in phono stage
- Turntables through an external phono stage
- CD players
- Cassette decks
- Tuners
- Computers with a suitable analogue output
- Other line-level audio equipment
Turntable Connection
To use Move 2 with a turntable, the cartridge signal must first be brought up to normal line level.
This means the turntable must contain its own phono preamplifier or be connected through an external phono stage.
The Line-In Adapter Is Not a Phono Stage
Do not connect a conventional moving magnet or moving coil cartridge directly to the Sonos Line-In Adapter. The turntable requires suitable phono amplification first unless this is already built in.
Line-In Requires WiFi
When using Move 2 with an analogue line-in source, keep the speaker connected to WiFi rather than operating purely in Bluetooth mode.
The incoming analogue signal becomes part of the Sonos network system and can then be distributed to compatible grouped rooms.
16-bit / 44.1kHz Line-In
Sonos' standard Line-In Adapter converts analogue audio at 16-bit / 44.1kHz.
This enables the signal to enter the digital Sonos ecosystem for local and multi-room playback.
Line-In Is Not Intended for TV
Sonos specifically advises against using the USB-C line-in system as a television connection.
The line-in architecture is designed for music-source distribution rather than the low-latency audio required for picture synchronisation.
Use a Sonos Soundbar for Television
If television sound is the priority, products such as Sonos Beam (Gen 2), Arc Ultra or Ray provide the correct low-latency home cinema connection instead.
Optional Ethernet
The optional Sonos Combo Adapter allows Move 2 to connect to a wired network through Ethernet.
This can be useful when the speaker is being used permanently in an area with unreliable WiFi coverage.

Sonos Voice Control
Move 2 supports Sonos Voice Control for compatible music and system commands.
You can use your voice to control playback, change volume and carry out supported Sonos functions without reaching for a phone.
Voice Control Over Bluetooth
Sonos Voice Control can remain useful when Move 2 is operating over Bluetooth, although it cannot initiate Bluetooth-source playback itself.
Once compatible Bluetooth audio is already playing, supported commands can still control functions such as volume and track playback.
Amazon Alexa
Amazon Alexa can also be added where supported by region, language and account availability.
This expands Move 2 beyond music control into compatible Alexa smart-home functions.
No Integrated Google Assistant
Current Sonos Move 2 voice support lists Sonos Voice Control and Amazon Alexa.
Google Assistant is not listed as an integrated Move 2 voice service.
Far-Field Microphone Array
The built-in microphone system uses beamforming and multichannel echo cancellation to help hear voice commands while the speaker is playing.
The same microphone hardware is also central to Automatic Trueplay.
Physical Microphone Disconnect Switch
A switch on the rear of Move 2 can disconnect power from the microphone hardware entirely.
This goes beyond simply muting an active voice service through software.
Hardware Microphone Off Also Disables Trueplay
The physical switch provides the strongest microphone shut-off, but Automatic Trueplay relies on those microphones as well. Turn the switch back on if you want the speaker to resume automatic acoustic tuning.
Capacitive Touch Controls
The top panel provides direct control without reaching for a phone.
You can:
- Play and pause
- Adjust volume
- Skip to the next track
- Replay or return to the previous track
- Group compatible Sonos products
- Control voice-service availability
Dedicated Volume Slider
The recessed touch slider provides an intuitive way of changing volume with a swipe.
It can be quicker than repeatedly tapping conventional plus and minus controls when making larger changes.
Dedicated Bluetooth Button
A rear button places Move 2 into Bluetooth pairing mode.
This keeps normal portable pairing separate from the touch controls used for everyday playback.

Sonos manufactures Move 2 in:
Actual Audio T colour availability can vary, so check the selectable options on the page or contact your local store.
Dimensions and Weight
The current UK Sonos specification gives:
- Height: 241mm
- Width: 160mm
- Depth: 127mm
- Weight: 3.0kg
The detailed Sonos user guide rounds the dimensions slightly differently because of inch-to-millimetre conversion, but the current UK sales-page figures above are the values used here.
Move 2 or Era 100?
Sonos Era 100 and Move 2 share several modern Sonos features, but their intended use is quite different.
Move 2
- Rechargeable battery
- Up to 24 hours playback
- Built-in carrying handle
- IP56 weather resistance
- WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3
- Automatic Trueplay
- Charging Base included
- Designed for indoor and outdoor use
Era 100
- Mains-powered room speaker
- Smaller cabinet
- WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3
- Quick and Advanced Trueplay options
- Designed for fixed indoor placement
- Can be used as compatible home cinema surrounds
- Lower price
- No battery or weather resistance
Move 2 or Roam 2?
The choice is mainly between greater sound and battery scale or much easier portability.
Roam 2 is small enough to slip into luggage and carries a stronger IP67 waterproof rating.
Move 2 is far larger and heavier, but provides much more acoustic scale, a 24-hour battery and a convenient Charging Base for everyday home use.
Can Move 2 Use a Sonos Sub?
No. Sonos does not support pairing Sub, Sub Mini or other Sonos Sub models directly with Move products.
If dedicated subwoofer integration is important, a fixed Sonos speaker such as Era 100, Era 300 or Five is a more appropriate starting point.
No Sonos Sub Pairing
Move 2's portable architecture is not compatible with Sonos Sub products. It is designed to provide its own bass wherever it is being used.
Current Sonos App Required
Move 2 requires the current generation of the Sonos app.
It cannot be added to a system that is being operated solely with the legacy Sonos S1 Controller.
Not Compatible With Sonos S1
This is worth checking if Move 2 is being added to an older Sonos installation containing legacy products.
The wider system may need to operate on the current Sonos platform or be separated appropriately before Move 2 can be added.
Operating Temperature
The detailed Sonos guide specifies an operating temperature range of approximately 0°C to 40°C.
Long-term exposure to excessive heat or cold can affect both battery performance and the speaker itself.
Storage Temperature
Sonos specifies a storage range of approximately -25°C to 70°C.
Those figures describe storage limits rather than ideal everyday operating conditions.
Keep Battery Temperature in Mind
Rechargeable batteries are affected by extreme temperatures.
Very hot conditions can shorten available playback time and long-term battery life, so avoid leaving Move 2 baking in a closed car or exposed unnecessarily to extreme heat.
Reduced Idle Power Consumption
Sonos states that Move 2 reduces idle energy consumption by roughly a third compared with its predecessor.
This matters because the speaker will spend a large proportion of its life sitting ready on the Charging Base rather than actively playing music.
Recycled Materials and Packaging
Sonos uses recycled plastics within Move 2 and supplies it in recyclable paper-based packaging using FSC-certified paper.
The replaceable battery also helps extend the useful life of the product rather than making battery deterioration an automatic reason to replace the complete speaker.
