Sonos Port is the product for anyone who likes their existing hi-fi but wants to add the convenience of Sonos rather than replace it. Connect its analogue outputs to an amplifier, receiver or pair of powered speakers and your existing system becomes another Sonos room, complete with app control, streaming services, multi-room playback and Apple AirPlay 2.
Its real strength is that the connection works in both directions. Port does not only send streaming music into a traditional hi-fi; the RCA line input can bring a turntable, CD player, tuner or other analogue source into Sonos and distribute it to compatible speakers elsewhere around the house. If you have a record player in the living room but occasionally want to hear it in the kitchen as well, Port provides a particularly neat solution.
There is plenty of flexibility on the output side too. Use the built-in DAC and RCA outputs, send digital audio through the coaxial connection to an amplifier or external DAC, choose Fixed or Variable output depending on where you want volume controlled, or use the 12V trigger with a compatible amplifier so it wakes automatically when Sonos begins playing. Add Sonos to the Hi-Fi You Already Own
Port is deliberately different from a Sonos wireless speaker.
There is no power amplifier for conventional passive speakers and no loudspeaker drivers inside the enclosure. Instead, Port is the bridge between the Sonos network and audio equipment you already own.
This makes it particularly useful if you have invested in a good amplifier and loudspeakers and do not want to replace them simply to gain access to Sonos streaming and multi-room playback.
Connect Port to an Integrated Amplifier
One of the simplest applications is connecting Port's stereo RCA outputs to an unused line-level input on a conventional integrated amplifier.
The amplifier and passive loudspeakers continue doing exactly what they did before, but Sonos becomes another selectable music source alongside your CD player, turntable, tuner or other equipment.
Connect Port to an AV Receiver
An AV receiver can be treated in much the same way.
Use either the RCA analogue outputs or the coaxial digital output according to the available connections on the receiver, select the corresponding input and the home cinema system can also operate as a Sonos music zone.
Connect Port to Powered or Active Speakers
Because Port provides line-level audio output, it can also feed suitable powered or active loudspeakers.
The exact cable required depends on the input connections of the speaker system. A pair with RCA inputs can connect relatively directly, while speakers using 3.5mm, XLR or another connection may require an appropriate cable or adapter.
Port Does Not Power Passive Speakers
Sonos Port is a network streamer and line-level source, not a speaker amplifier. Conventional passive loudspeakers still require suitable amplification. If you want one Sonos product that both streams music and powers passive speakers, consider Sonos Amp instead.
RCA Analogue Output
The stereo RCA output provides a conventional analogue signal suitable for an integrated amplifier, preamplifier, receiver or compatible active-speaker system.
When the RCA output is used, Port's internal digital-to-analogue conversion provides the analogue music signal for the downstream equipment.
Built-In DAC
Sonos describes Port as a network streamer with a built-in DAC.
This allows it to connect directly to almost any amplifier with a conventional line-level analogue input without requiring a separate external digital-to-analogue converter.
Coaxial Digital Output
A coaxial S/PDIF digital output provides an alternative when your amplifier, receiver or external DAC has a suitable digital input.
In this arrangement the receiving component performs the final digital-to-analogue conversion rather than using Port's RCA analogue output stage.
Analogue or Digital Output?
If your amplifier has only analogue inputs, use Port's RCA outputs. If it contains a DAC and provides a coaxial digital input, try the digital connection as well. Which sounds better can depend on the quality and character of the DAC in the receiving component, so this is an excellent comparison to make by ear.
No Optical Digital Output
Port's digital output is coaxial rather than optical Toslink.
If the receiving amplifier or DAC provides only optical digital inputs, a suitable external conversion solution would be required, or you can simply use Port's RCA analogue outputs.
Three Different Line-Out Modes
Port provides three line-out configurations so volume control can be handled in the most appropriate place for the system:
- Fixed
- Variable
- Pass-Through
Fixed Line-Out
Fixed mode is generally the natural choice when Port is connected to a conventional integrated amplifier or receiver and you want that component to control listening volume.
Port outputs at a fixed level and the amplifier's volume control remains responsible for how loudly the speakers play.
When Fixed output is selected, Sonos disables its own volume and EQ adjustment for the Port output.
Fixed Is Usually the Starting Point for a Traditional Hi-Fi Amplifier
If you already have a normal amplifier with a volume control, Fixed output avoids having two independent volume controls in the same signal path. Set Port to Fixed and use the amplifier as you normally would.
Variable Line-Out
Variable mode allows the output volume to be adjusted through the Sonos app.
This can be useful when Port feeds a power amplifier, some active loudspeakers or another arrangement where convenient upstream volume control is wanted.
Care should be taken during initial setup because both Sonos and the downstream equipment may influence the eventual listening level.
Be Careful With Variable Output Into Power Amplification
When connecting Port to equipment without a conventional front-panel volume control, begin cautiously. Confirm the Port output setting and start at a low volume before playing music through the system.
Pass-Through Line-Out
Pass-Through mode is intended for amplifiers that specifically support compatible volume-control pass-through operation.
Port itself remains at a fixed output level while Sonos sends volume commands to the compatible amplifier.
This can allow volume to be controlled through the Sonos app, a suitable universal remote or compatible voice-control arrangement while the amplifier handles the actual volume change.
Your Amplifier Must Support Pass-Through
Do not select Pass-Through simply because it sounds convenient. The connected amplifier must explicitly support compatible pass-through control. If it does not, Sonos will not be able to control its volume correctly.
Stereo or Dual Mono
Port normally operates as a conventional stereo source.
The Sonos app also allows its output to be changed to dual mono, sending a combined mono presentation through both output channels.
This can be particularly useful in some installed-audio or distributed-speaker arrangements where left/right stereo imaging is less important than ensuring every area receives the complete programme.

When the selected output mode permits it, the Sonos app provides adjustment for bass, treble and loudness.

12V Trigger Output
Port includes a 12V trigger connection rated at up to 200mA.

This removes one of the inconveniences normally associated with adding an external streamer to a traditional amplifier: having to find a second remote or walk over to the system before music can start.
Why the 12V Trigger Is So Useful
Without a trigger, opening the Sonos app and pressing Play may send music from Port while the amplifier remains switched off or in standby.
With a compatible trigger connection, the amplifier can wake as part of the same playback process.
Check Your Amplifier First
The amplifier needs its own compatible 12V trigger input. Consult its manual before connection and make sure the trigger requirements fall within Port's specified 12V / 200mA output capability.
Bring a Turntable Into Sonos
The stereo RCA input is just as important as Port's outputs.
Connect a turntable with a proper line-level output and the record player becomes a selectable Sonos source.

Port With an External DAC
