Rega System One Complete Turntable System

Rega System One Complete Turntable System

Audio T Verdict

The Rega System One is one of the simplest ways to begin enjoying vinyl through a proper separates Hi-Fi system. It brings together a Planar 1 turntable, io integrated amplifier, pair of Kyte loudspeakers, remote control and speaker cable in one carefully matched package.

Each component is also available separately and has been designed as a genuine Hi-Fi product rather than as part of a disposable one-box system. This gives the System One a clear advantage for anyone who may want to add streaming, a CD player, better speaker supports or future component upgrades.

The Planar 1 and io require very little adjustment, while the compact Kyte speakers are well suited to smaller and medium-sized rooms. Some initial assembly and careful speaker positioning are still worthwhile, and your local Audio T team can help you get everything connected and working correctly.

Rega System One Complete Turntable System

The Rega System One is a complete vinyl-based Hi-Fi system designed to provide everything required to begin listening to records through a pair of passive stereo loudspeakers.

It combines three of Rega's established products: the Rega Planar 1 turntable , Rega io integrated amplifier and a pair of Rega Kyte loudspeakers .

The io includes the moving magnet phono stage required by the Planar 1, so no separate phono pre-amplifier is needed. Two 3-metre lengths of Rega speaker cable are also included to connect the amplifier to the Kyte speakers.

Once assembled, the system provides conventional manual vinyl playback, remote-controlled volume and input selection, two additional line-level inputs and a front-panel headphone socket.

Factory-Fitted Rega Carbon Cartridge

The Planar 1 is supplied with a Rega Carbon moving magnet cartridge already fitted to the tonearm.

Its conical diamond stylus and carbon cantilever provide straightforward tracking and are matched to the preset tonearm balance and bias arrangement.

When the stylus eventually wears, the removable stylus assembly can be replaced without removing or realigning the complete cartridge.

Playing 33? and 45 RPM Records

The Planar 1 plays conventional 33? rpm LPs and 45 rpm singles.

Speed is changed manually by removing the platter and moving the drive belt between the two sections of the motor pulley.

The Planar 1 does not provide electronic speed switching and is not compatible with the Rega Neo Mk2 external power supply.

Rega io Integrated Amplifier

The compact io amplifier forms the centre of the System One, providing amplification, source selection, volume control, a moving magnet phono stage and headphone listening.

Its Class A/B amplifier circuit delivers 30W RMS per channel into an 8-ohm loudspeaker load with both channels driven.

Rega uses Sanken output transistors, an Alps volume potentiometer and a linear power supply within the compact half-width enclosure.

The io is designed to work closely with the Kyte speakers, whose 89dB sensitivity and nominal 6-ohm impedance make sensible use of the amplifier's available power.

  • 30W RMS per channel into 8 ohms
  • Class A/B amplifier design
  • Sanken output transistors
  • Alps volume potentiometer
  • Linear power supply
  • Moving magnet phono stage
  • Two RCA line-level inputs
  • 3.5mm headphone output
  • Remote volume, mute and input selection
  • Short-circuit protection

Built-In Moving Magnet Phono Stage

Input 1 on the io is a dedicated moving magnet phono input designed for the signal produced by the Rega Carbon cartridge.

The Planar 1 connects directly to this input using its fixed RCA cable. No separate phono stage or additional interconnect is required.

Use Input 1 for a Turntable Only

The io Phono input is much more sensitive than a conventional line input.

Do not connect a CD player, streamer, television, DAC or another line-level source to Input 1. Additional sources should use Inputs 2 or 3.

Two Additional Line Inputs

Inputs 2 and 3 can be used to expand the System One with compatible line-level source components.

Suitable additions include:

  • A network music streamer with an analogue output
  • A CD player
  • A radio tuner
  • A cassette deck
  • A television with a suitable analogue output
  • An external DAC
  • Another compatible line-level source

Adding Music Streaming

The Rega System One does not include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or built-in network streaming, but a separate streamer can connect to either of the io line-level inputs.

WiiM Pro Plus

The WiiM Pro Plus is a well-matched way to add app-controlled streaming, internet radio, Bluetooth and multiroom playback.

Its RCA analogue output connects to Input 2 or 3 on the io. Set the streamer to fixed output so listening volume is controlled by the Rega amplifier.

Bluesound Node Nano

The Bluesound Node Nano provides BluOS streaming, internet radio, multiroom playback and access to a broad range of online music services.

Its RCA line output connects to either of the io line inputs, leaving the System One amplifier responsible for volume control.

Other streamers can also be used provided they include a conventional analogue line output. A digital-only transport would require a separate DAC before connection to the io.

Using a CD Player

A CD player with an RCA analogue output can connect directly to Input 2 or 3 on the io amplifier.

The second line input can then remain available for a streamer, tuner or another compatible source.

The io does not contain a digital-to-analogue converter, so a CD transport offering digital outputs only would require a separate DAC.

Connecting a Television

The Rega io does not include HDMI, optical or coaxial digital inputs.

A television can connect directly only if it provides a suitable fixed or variable analogue audio output.

Televisions with optical digital output require an external DAC or a compatible streamer with an optical input and RCA analogue output.

When using a variable television output, begin with the TV volume set low and avoid using two volume controls at unnecessarily high settings.

Headphone Listening

A 3.5mm headphone socket is positioned on the front of the io amplifier.

Inserting a headphone plug automatically mutes the Kyte loudspeakers.

Reduce the amplifier volume before connecting or removing headphones, particularly when changing between headphones with different sensitivities.

The headphone circuit is intended for conventional wired Hi-Fi headphones. The io does not provide wireless headphone transmission.

Mini Remote Control

The supplied Rega mini remote provides control of:

  • Volume up and down
  • Input selection
  • Mute

Two AAA batteries are included.

Power is controlled using the front-panel button rather than from the remote handset.

Rega Kyte Loudspeakers

The Kyte is a compact two-way passive loudspeaker designed and manufactured to complement Rega amplification.

Each cabinet contains a Rega MX-125 mid and bass driver together with Rega's ZRR high-frequency unit.

The thermoset phenolic resin enclosure is reinforced using ceramic plates and internal cross bracing to create a stiff and lightweight structure.

A rear-firing bass-reflex port supports low-frequency output, while the supplied rear foot sets the speaker at the intended angle when it is placed on a suitable shelf or surface.

  • Two-way passive loudspeaker
  • Rear-ported bass-reflex design
  • Thermoset phenolic resin cabinet
  • Rega MX-125 mid and bass driver
  • Rega ZRR high-frequency unit
  • Nominal 6-ohm impedance
  • 89dB sensitivity
  • 80W recommended power-handling guide
  • Rear positioning foot supplied

Fitting the Kyte Rear Feet

Each Kyte is supplied with a rear support foot and two fixing screws.

A PZ2 or Pozi No. 2 screwdriver is required to fit the feet. The screwdriver is not listed as part of the supplied system accessories.

Place each cabinet with its rear edge overhanging a protected flat surface while fitting the foot. Never place the Kyte face down, as this may damage the drive units.

Loosely attach the foot before moving the speaker onto a level surface and fully tightening the screws. This helps the finished speaker sit correctly.

Speaker Positioning

The Kytes can be used on suitable speaker stands, a strong shelf or another stable and level surface.

Avoid placing the speakers and turntable on the same lightweight shelf or piece of furniture, as vibration from the loudspeakers can reach the record and stylus.

Begin with both speakers positioned at the same height and approximately the same distance from your main listening position.

The rear bass-reflex ports mean that moving the speakers closer to a solid wall will generally increase bass output. Moving them further into the room may improve definition and stereo imaging.

Small adjustments to the distance from the wall and the angle towards the listening position can make a noticeable difference.

Rega Speaker Cable Included

The package includes two 3-metre lengths of Rega specification copper speaker cable.

Each conductor contains 56 copper strands. The two equal lengths allow the left and right loudspeakers to be positioned up to approximately 3 metres from the amplifier, depending on the route taken by the cable.

Red amplifier and speaker terminals must connect to red, while black must connect to black. Reversing the polarity of one speaker can reduce bass response and weaken the central stereo image.

Always switch the io off before fitting, removing or changing speaker cables.

Audio T can help prepare the included cable or recommend longer lengths where required by the room.

Simple System Setup

  1. Place the Planar 1 on a rigid and level surface.
  2. Fit the platter, felt mat and hinged dustcover.
  3. Push the balance weight fully onto the RB110 tonearm until it reaches its stop point.
  4. Connect the turntable RCA cable to Input 1 marked Phono on the io.
  5. Fit the rear support foot to each Kyte loudspeaker.
  6. Position the speakers on stable surfaces or suitable stands.
  7. Connect the included speaker cable with the correct red and black polarity.
  8. Connect the supplied power adaptors and mains lead.
  9. Turn the amplifier volume down before switching the system on.
  10. Select Input 1 and begin playing a record.

Rega describes the Planar 1 turntable itself as capable of being set up in under 30 seconds. Allow more time for unpacking the complete system, fitting the Kyte feet and arranging the speaker cable safely.

Turntable and Amplifier Positioning

Position the Planar 1 on a rigid, level support away from the loudspeakers and sources of vibration.

Place the io as far from the tonearm as the fixed turntable cable reasonably allows. This can reduce the possibility of transformer hum entering the low-level cartridge signal.

The io should sit on a hard surface with open space around the case. Do not place it on carpet, bedding or fabric.

Do not stack equipment directly on top of the amplifier, as its case may become hot during extended listening.

Individual Component Upgrade Path

One of the main advantages of the System One is that the turntable, amplifier and speakers are conventional separate components.

This allows the system to be developed gradually rather than replaced in one step.
