Audio T Verdict
The DALI SONIK 9 are the flagship floorstanding speakers in the SONIK range, designed to deliver effortless scale, deep bass and clean dynamics in larger listening rooms.
Three 7-inch Clarity Cone paper and wood-fibre drivers provide substantial low-frequency authority while preserving the detail and natural character required through the midrange. Powerful double-magnet systems give the drivers additional control and dynamic headroom.
DALI's SMC Essential motor technology helps reduce magnetic distortion, allowing voices and instruments to remain composed and clearly separated even when the speakers are working hard.
The Hybrid Tweeter module combines a 29mm soft dome with a 17 × 45mm planar element, producing an open and extended treble across a wide listening area.
For large-room stereo systems or powerful home cinema front channels, the SONIK 9 offer impressive bass, scale and refinement without stepping into DALI's more costly Danish-made ranges.
DALI SONIK 9 Floorstanding Speakers
The DALI SONIK 9 are large passive floorstanding speakers designed for ambitious stereo and home cinema systems.
Each cabinet contains three 7-inch Clarity Cone SMC drivers, a 29mm soft-dome tweeter, a 17 × 45mm planar tweeter and a rear bass-reflex system.
The speakers are supplied as a stereo pair and require a suitable external amplifier.
A Separate Amplifier Is Required
The SONIK 9 are passive speakers and cannot play music directly from a television, phone, turntable, streamer or computer.
DALI recommends amplifier power between 50W and 300W. The chosen amplifier should also be comfortable driving the speakers' 4-ohm nominal impedance.
Three 7-Inch Clarity Cone Drivers
Each SONIK 9 uses three 7-inch bass and midrange drivers with DALI's Clarity Cone paper and wood-fibre diaphragms.
The cone profile is inspired by technology developed for DALI's higher-end loudspeakers. It is designed to improve rigidity and resonance control while retaining low mass and natural damping.
Powerful double-magnet systems are exclusive to the SONIK 9 within the range, providing focused magnetic fields, low losses and additional dynamic headroom.
SMC Essential Motor Technology
DALI's Soft Magnetic Composite material is positioned within the voice coil's working area to reduce magnetic hysteresis and eddy currents.
Reducing these unwanted effects helps the drivers follow the amplifier signal more accurately, contributing to cleaner bass, a more relaxed midrange and lower distortion.
Hybrid Tweeter System
The Hybrid Tweeter module combines a 29mm low-loss soft dome with a 17 × 45mm planar magnetostatic element.
The soft dome provides the main high-frequency output from 2,100Hz, while the planar element joins at 14,000Hz to extend the response and broaden horizontal dispersion.
This helps the SONIK 9 retain clear, open treble across a wider seating area rather than creating one narrowly defined listening position.
2½ + ½-Way Crossover
The crossover operates at 400Hz, 2,100Hz and 14,000Hz.
The staggered filtering allows the three 7-inch drivers to combine through the bass while controlling how much each contributes through the midrange.
The arrangement provides the low-frequency scale of several drivers without allowing excessive overlap to cloud voices and instruments.
Deep Bass for Large Rooms
The rear bass-reflex system is tuned to 35Hz and helps the SONIK 9 achieve a specified response extending down to 34Hz.
This gives music and film soundtracks genuine weight, while the 111dB maximum output provides the headroom required for substantial listening spaces.
The rear ports must remain clear of furniture, curtains and other obstructions.
Room Positioning
DALI recommends positioning the SONIK 9 between 20cm and 120cm from the wall behind them.
Moving them closer to the wall will generally increase perceived bass, while additional space may improve definition and soundstage depth.
Begin with the Speakers Facing Straight Ahead
DALI's Wide Dispersion Sound Principle is designed to work with the cabinets broadly parallel to the rear wall rather than angled sharply towards the listener.
Small adjustments can still be tried to suit the room, listening distance and speaker spacing.
Stable Floor Installation
Spike outriggers widen the footprint of the cabinet and help keep each 24.6kg speaker stable.
Spikes and lock nuts are supplied for suitable carpeted floors, while hemispherical rubber feet provide an alternative for hard surfaces.
Protect Hard Flooring
Do not place exposed spikes directly onto wood, laminate, tile or other delicate surfaces. Use the supplied rubber feet or suitable protective floor cups.
Amplifier Matching
The SONIK 9 combine 90dB sensitivity with a 4-ohm nominal impedance.
Their sensitivity helps them produce substantial volume, but the triple-driver system still benefits from an amplifier with dependable current delivery and sufficient clean headroom.
A suitable demonstration will reveal more about bass control, tonal balance and dynamic ability than headline wattage alone.
SONIK 7 or SONIK 9?
Choose the SONIK 7 When
- The room is medium sized or large
- Twin 7-inch drivers provide sufficient scale
- A more manageable cabinet is preferred
- A 6-ohm design better suits the amplifier
- Lower cost is an important consideration
Choose the SONIK 9 When
- The listening room is particularly large
- Maximum bass authority is required
- Three 7-inch drivers can be accommodated
- Greater sensitivity and output are important
- The amplifier is suitable for a 4-ohm load
The DALI SONIK 7 offer much of the flagship model's character within a smaller and easier-to-drive cabinet.
The SONIK 9 provide deeper bass, greater sensitivity and more effortless scale for the largest rooms.
SONIK 9 or OPTICON 8 MK2?
Choose the SONIK 9 When
- You want the flagship SONIK model
- Three 7-inch drivers suit the room
- High output and strong value are priorities
- A contemporary range and finish choice appeal
Choose the OPTICON 8 MK2 When
- Danish manufacture is important
