The Hegel Viking is a reference CD player built around a deliberately narrow brief: to reproduce standard Red Book compact discs as faithfully as possible.
Rather than adding SACD playback, network streaming, USB, digital inputs or support for compressed data files, Hegel has optimised the entire player for the native 16-bit/44.1kHz format found on conventional audio CDs.
A dedicated slot-loading drive and laser assembly read the disc, while Hegel's discrete master-clock system directly controls both the transport mechanism and digital-to-analogue converter. This is intended to minimise timing errors before the signal reaches the analogue output stage.
The internal DAC does not upsample or resample the incoming Red Book signal. Hegel's approach is to retain the original 16-bit/44.1kHz data and optimise the conversion circuitry specifically for that single format.
