The Hegel H400 is a powerful streaming integrated amplifier designed for ambitious two-channel systems that need substantial loudspeaker control without separating amplification, digital conversion and network streaming into several components.

Its dual-mono Class A/B power amplifier delivers 250W per channel into 8 ohms, remains stable into 2-ohm loudspeaker loads and has a quoted damping factor greater than 4000.

Those figures make the H400 a convincing option for demanding standmount and floorstanding loudspeakers, although sensitivity, impedance, room size and preferred listening level should still be considered before purchase.

Hegel's SoundEngine 2 technology monitors the amplifier output and applies local correction when distortion is detected. This is combined with DualAmp architecture, symmetrical dual-mono construction and a separate transformer for the DAC and pre-amplifier sections.

The built-in streaming platform supports Spotify Connect with Spotify Lossless, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Google Cast, Apple AirPlay, UPnP, Roon Ready and JPLAY Certified playback. Internet radio and podcasts are provided through airable in the Hegel Control app.

Digital connectivity is equally comprehensive. USB supports PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD256 through DoP, while the BNC and RCA coaxial inputs support PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz and DSD64 through DoP.

The H400 has no phono stage, headphone output, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB-drive input or HDMI connection. Vinyl requires an external phono stage, television sound normally uses optical audio and network streaming requires wired Ethernet.

One balanced XLR and two RCA analogue inputs are joined by fixed and variable RCA outputs. These allow the H400 to accommodate analogue sources, an active subwoofer, recording equipment or a suitable external power amplifier.

The BNC digital output and DAC-loop function provide a valuable upgrade path. The H400 can send its digital and streaming signal to the Hegel D50 Reference DAC, then receive the converted analogue signal through its balanced XLR input.

The less expensive H150 provides a built-in MM phono stage, headphone output and USB-drive playback, but has considerably less power. The H600 increases output to 303W per channel and provides additional analogue connectivity for still more ambitious systems.

For listeners who need the H600's broad approach but not quite its full power, size or price, the H400 is arguably the sweet spot within Hegel's premium integrated-amplifier range.

Hegel H400 Streaming Integrated Amplifier

The Hegel H400 combines a network music streamer, high-resolution DAC, analogue pre-amplifier and powerful dual-mono Class A/B power amplifier.

Connect a suitable pair of passive loudspeakers and the H400 can reproduce streamed music, computer audio, television sound, CD, an external turntable system and a wide range of conventional analogue or digital sources.

Source selection, volume, streaming and system settings can be controlled through the front panel, supplied RC8 remote, compatible streaming applications and the Hegel Control app.

250W-per-Channel Class A/B Amplification

The H400 produces 250W per channel into 8 ohms with both channels driven.

This substantial output gives the amplifier the headroom required for larger rooms, less sensitive loudspeakers and musical material with wide dynamic range.

Class A/B operation is used rather than a switching Class D output stage.

Power output alone cannot guarantee compatibility with every loudspeaker. A demonstration with the intended speakers remains the best way to assess control, tonal balance and achievable listening level.

Stable into 2-Ohm Loudspeaker Loads

Hegel specifies the H400 as stable into loudspeaker loads down to 2 ohms.
