The Innuos STREAM1 is far more adaptable than the usual entry point into premium music streaming. Its modular construction allows it to begin as a dedicated streaming transport and develop into a complete music server or analogue-output source as the system changes.
In its standard configuration, the STREAM1 can play music through a compatible external USB DAC. Optional output modules can then add analogue RCA outputs, conventional optical, coaxial and AES digital connections, or a high-performance PhoenixUSB reclocked output.
Storage follows the same modular approach. The basic unit has a dedicated drive for its operating system but no music-library storage. Adding an M.2 NVMe SSD transforms it into a full server capable of storing a local music collection, managing imported files and ripping CDs through a separately purchased USB optical drive.
Control is handled through the Innuos Sense app or a web browser. Sense brings local music, compatible streaming services, internet radio and podcasts into one interface, with extensive library management and playback controls.
The STREAM1 uses a 13th-generation Intel quad-core processor, 8GB of industrial-grade DDR5 memory and a dedicated power-loss-protected TLC SSD for its operating system. Innuos also applies a low-latency Real-Time Kernel derived from the company’s ZEN Next-Gen platform.
Its CX Regulator provides a dedicated low-noise supply for the optional output-module stage. The rest of the unit is powered by the supplied filtered medical-grade switch-mode supply, with the matching LPS1 linear power supply available as a substantial future upgrade.
The two 2.5Gb Ethernet ports are bridged, allowing one to connect to the home network and the other to provide a wired network connection for another device. There is no Wi-Fi, which reflects Innuos’s preference for the reliability and consistency of wired networking.
The most important point is that the STREAM1 must be configured for the intended system. The base version has no analogue output, conventional S/PDIF output or music-storage drive. It does, however, retain a standard USB audio output, so customers who already own a suitable USB DAC can begin without purchasing an output module.
This combination of sensible starting specification and genuine upgradeability makes the STREAM1 particularly appealing to customers who want to improve their digital source gradually rather than replacing the complete streamer whenever their requirements change.
Innuos STREAM1 Modular Music Streamer and Server
The Innuos STREAM1 is a compact wired network music streamer that can also operate as a music server when an optional M.2 NVMe storage drive is installed.
Its modular output bay allows the connection options to be selected around the wider system rather than forcing every customer to pay for a built-in DAC or digital output they may never use.

Understand the Base Configuration
The standard STREAM1 is supplied without music-library storage and without an optional output module.

A Streamer, Server or Both
A network streamer receives music from online services, internet radio, a NAS drive or another server on the home network.
A music server also stores and manages a local digital music library.
The STREAM1 can perform either role. Without an optional storage drive it operates principally as a network player. Adding compatible internal M.2 NVMe storage enables the fuller server functions within Innuos Sense.
Standard USB Audio Output
Every STREAM1 provides standard USB audio output, even when no optional output module is installed.
This allows the base unit to connect directly to a compatible USB DAC, digital amplifier or active speaker system.
USB is also the connection that provides the STREAM1’s broadest potential format support, subject to the capabilities of the connected DAC.
The external DAC must support USB Audio Class operation and may require its own manufacturer driver when used with certain system modes or configurations.
Check the DAC Input
A socket intended for USB storage, firmware updates or phone charging is not automatically a USB audio input.
The DAC or amplifier must specifically support audio from a USB host source.

One rear output-module bay allows the STREAM1 to be equipped with a specialised connection board.

Who Should Choose the StandardDAC?
The StandardDAC is well suited to customers who want a simple and comparatively affordable complete streamer without immediately purchasing a separate converter.
It may also suit systems where optical or coaxial output is required but AES or advanced reclocked USB is unnecessary.
The 24-bit/192kHz limit is sufficient for most commercially available music, but it does not provide the PerformanceDAC’s higher PCM and native DSD capability.
PerformanceDAC Board
The PerformanceDAC is the more ambitious analogue-output option for the STREAM1.
It uses a current-generation AKM converter, high-quality TCXO clocks and separate power supplies for its digital and analogue sections.
Gold-plated stereo RCA outputs connect directly to an amplifier or active loudspeakers.
Supported playback extends to:
- PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz
- Native DSD up to DSD512
Actual playback capability remains dependent on the source file, Sense settings and installed module.
Who Should Choose the PerformanceDAC?
The PerformanceDAC suits customers who want a higher-quality one-box streaming source without adding a separate DAC and another interconnect or mains cable.
It is particularly relevant where the amplifier has only analogue inputs or where the STREAM1 will be used as the principal digital source for a revealing system.
An external DAC may remain preferable where balanced outputs, several digital inputs, a headphone amplifier or a particular converter design is required.
S/PDIF Digital Output Board
The dedicated S/PDIF Board is intended for customers using an external DAC or amplifier with conventional digital inputs.
It adds:
- Coaxial S/PDIF output
- Optical S/PDIF output
- Balanced AES digital output
- PCM support up to 24-bit/192kHz
- Dedicated low-noise power regulation
- High-quality gold-plated connections where applicable
The board does not provide an analogue output and therefore still requires a separate DAC.
Choosing Between Optical, Coaxial and AES
Optical provides electrical isolation between the STREAM1 and DAC, but its practical performance can depend on the transmitting and receiving interfaces.
Coaxial uses a 75-ohm electrical connection and is widely supported by Hi-Fi DACs and amplifiers.
AES uses a balanced 110-ohm connection and is common on professional and higher-end digital equipment.
The preferred connection should be established by checking compatibility and, ideally, comparing the available inputs through the intended DAC.
PhoenixUSB Board
The PhoenixUSB Board adds a regenerated and reclocked USB output for a compatible USB Audio Class 2 DAC.
Its design includes:

Output Modules Not Available for STREAM1
The PhoenixDAC and PhoenixI2S modules are not available for the STREAM1.
These higher-level options are reserved for selected models further up the Innuos range.

Optional Internal Music Storage
The STREAM1 includes one accessible M.2 NVMe storage bay.
Innuos currently lists 2TB and 4TB factory-fitted options. A suitable owner-supplied NVMe SSD can also be installed through the external bay.
The storage drive is separate from the dedicated power-loss-protected SSD used for the operating system.
M.2 SATA Drives Are Not Supported
The storage drive must use the M.2 NVMe standard.
An M.2 SATA drive may fit physically but will not operate correctly. Drives with large factory heatsinks may also prevent the storage-bay shield from fitting.
Factory Storage Options
The current Innuos factory options are:
- 2TB M.2 NVMe SSD
- 4TB M.2 NVMe SSD
These provide substantial capacity for lossless and high-resolution music libraries without requiring an external NAS.
The number of albums that can be stored varies considerably according to file format, resolution and recording length.
Installing Your Own NVMe Storage
The external storage bay is accessible from the underside of the STREAM1.
Innuos recommends suitable low-power NVMe drives without oversized heatsinks. Its current guidance recommends the WD Red SN700 for capacities up to 4TB.
The system must be shut down correctly and disconnected from power before the storage bay is opened.
After fitting the drive, Sense guides the user through formatting and preparing it as music storage.

Internal storage allows the STREAM1 to manage a local music library directly.

Playing Music from USB Storage
Compatible USB storage drives can be connected for direct playback.

For a permanent and carefully organised local collection, importing the files to internal NVMe storage provides the more complete library-management experience.
Importing Music from USB
Music held on a compatible USB drive can be imported to the internal SSD.
Innuos recommends using one of the standard USB-A ports for large imports because these use the faster USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection, while the USB-C port uses USB 3.2 Gen 1.
The files should be backed up independently before any import or reorganisation is attempted.
CD Ripping with an External Drive
The STREAM1 has no built-in optical drive.
When internal music storage is installed, a compatible external USB CD drive can be connected to rip audio discs.
The customised Innuos ripping engine can retrieve album information from sources including:

- GD3
- MusicBrainz
Music can be ripped in FLAC or WAV format.
Storage Is Required for CD Ripping
An external USB optical drive alone is not sufficient.
The STREAM1 must also have a compatible internal M.2 NVMe music-storage drive installed.

Sense is Innuos’s own control and library-management platform.
It combines compatible streaming services, local files, NAS libraries, internet radio and podcasts within one interface.

Two 2.5Gb Ethernet Ports

The STREAM1 cannot be configured as a fully wireless streamer.

Dedicated Operating-System SSD
The Innuos operating system is installed on a dedicated industrial TLC SSD with power-loss protection.
This drive is separate from any optional music-library storage.
Keeping system software and music storage separate simplifies upgrades and prevents the operating system from competing directly with large library transfers on one drive.
Real-Time Kernel Technology
Innuos uses Real-Time Kernel technology derived from its ZEN Next-Gen systems.
The operating environment is designed to prioritise critical audio processes and maintain a low-latency response.

CX Regulator

Supplied Filtered Power Supply
The standard STREAM1 is powered through a 19V DC input using the supplied medical-grade filtered switch-mode power supply.

Optional Innuos LPS1
The matching LPS1 replaces the standard switch-mode supply with a dedicated linear power supply.

Roon Bridge Mode
Where another device already runs the Roon Core, the STREAM1 can operate as a Roon endpoint.

HQPlayer and AssetUPnP
The STREAM1 can operate as an HQPlayer NAA endpoint.
AssetUPnP can be enabled when the STREAM1 is being used as a UPnP server for compatible network players.
Available functions depend on the selected system mode and are not necessarily active simultaneously.
Backing Up the Music Library
Internal music storage should always be backed up to a separate drive or network location.
An SSD is reliable and contains no moving parts, but it is not immune to hardware failure, accidental deletion or file corruption.
A proper backup must exist independently from the STREAM1 rather than being another folder on the same internal drive.
Compact Half-Width Construction
The STREAM1 measures 240mm wide, 200mm deep and 80mm high.
Its compact footprint allows it to sit beside the matching LPS1 or NET1, or on a conventional equipment shelf.
A 10mm CNC-machined aluminium fascia provides a substantial front surface despite the compact enclosure.

It adds coaxial, optical and balanced AES digital outputs, supporting PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz.
What does the PhoenixUSB Board provide?
It adds a regenerated and reclocked USB output using a 3ppb 24MHz OCXO and ultra-low-noise LT3045 regulation.
Can the STREAM1 connect directly to an analogue amplifier?
Yes, when the StandardDAC or PerformanceDAC module is fitted, or when a separate external DAC is used.
Can it connect to an amplifier with an optical input?
Yes, with the StandardDAC or S/PDIF Board installed.
Can it connect through AES?

Does it have Wi-Fi?
