Audio T Verdict
The Innuos STREAM3 is the most ambitious model in the STREAM range, combining the flexibility of a modular streamer and server with a substantially more advanced internal power supply and full-width reference-style construction.
It can begin as a dedicated USB streaming transport for an external DAC, then be configured with internal music storage and one of five specialist output modules. These can add analogue RCA outputs, balanced XLR outputs, conventional S/PDIF and AES connections, a regenerated USB output or a configurable I2S connection.
Its ARC6-CX linear power supply is central to the design. A 300VA toroidal transformer, medical-grade mains filtering, active rectification, 132,000uF of Mundorf capacitance and Innuos CX regulation provide a low-impedance power source for the processor and audio-output architecture.
The STREAM3 also introduces the exclusive PhoenixDAC option. This dual-mono conversion module uses separate AKM DAC chips, an oven-controlled master clock and dedicated audio clocks, with balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs. Its digital and analogue stages are powered independently by a dedicated internal supply developed with Dr Sean Jacobs.
Customers using an external DAC can instead select the S/PDIF, PhoenixUSB or PhoenixI2S module. The base STREAM3 also retains standard USB audio output, so an output board is not compulsory where a suitable USB DAC is already available.
Optional M.2 NVMe storage turns the STREAM3 into a full music server. Innuos currently offers 2TB, 4TB and 8TB factory-installed capacities, while a suitable owner-supplied NVMe drive can be fitted through the accessible storage bay.
Once storage is installed, the STREAM3 can manage a local music library, import files, serve compatible network players and rip CDs using a separately purchased USB optical drive. Streaming services, internet radio, podcasts, NAS libraries and USB storage are integrated through the Innuos Sense platform.
The supplied STREAM Remote provides direct access to power, playback, volume and ten configurable presets. Sense remains the primary interface for detailed library management, service browsing, settings and system configuration.
The STREAM3 is a wired network product with no Wi-Fi. Two bridged 2.5Gb Ethernet connections allow one port to connect to the home network and the other to pass a network connection to a compatible streamer, DAC or other device.
It is important to choose the configuration around the rest of the system. The base version has no analogue output, conventional S/PDIF output, I2S output or music-library storage. Once correctly specified, however, the STREAM3 can operate as a premium digital transport, complete analogue streamer or sophisticated music server without forcing the customer into one fixed connection path.
Innuos STREAM3 Reference Music Streamer and Server
The Innuos STREAM3 is a high-performance wired music streamer with optional server storage and a modular audio-output architecture.
It is designed to form the digital front end of an advanced Hi-Fi system, whether connected to an external DAC or configured with an internal analogue-output module.
Depending on the selected storage and output options, the STREAM3 can operate as:
- A high-performance USB streaming transport
- An optical, coaxial or AES digital transport
- A regenerated PhoenixUSB source
- An I2S digital source for a compatible DAC
- A complete analogue streamer with RCA outputs
- A balanced analogue streamer with RCA and XLR outputs

Understand the Base Configuration
The standard STREAM3 is supplied without music-library storage and without an optional output module.
Standard USB audio output remains available, but all other audio connections require the appropriate module.

Premium Modular Digital Platform
The STREAM3 is designed to accommodate different system requirements without using one fixed output stage for every customer.
Someone who already owns a high-quality USB DAC can use the standard USB output. Another customer may choose the PhoenixDAC to create a complete balanced analogue source, while an existing external converter may be better served by AES, PhoenixUSB or I2S.
One output module can be installed at a time. It may be ordered with the STREAM3 or installed later by an authorised Innuos dealer.
Output Modules Require Dealer Installation
Innuos specifies that output boards must be fitted by an authorised dealer.
Do not remove the STREAM3 case or attempt to install, change or service an output module yourself.
Standard USB Audio Output
Standard USB audio output is available even when no optional module is installed.
This allows the base STREAM3 to connect directly to a compatible USB DAC, digital amplifier or active speaker system.
USB provides the broadest general platform resolution, subject to the capabilities of the connected DAC. The STREAM3 supports PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz, DSD up to DSD256 through DoP and native DSD up to DSD512 with suitable hardware.
The DAC must provide a genuine USB audio input. A USB socket intended only for storage, updates or charging will not operate as an audio destination.
PerformanceDAC Board
The PerformanceDAC Board turns the STREAM3 into a complete analogue-output streamer.
It uses a current-generation AKM conversion chip with high-grade temperature-compensated crystal oscillators.
Independent supplies serve the digital and analogue stages, while gold-plated stereo RCA connections provide line-level output to an integrated amplifier, pre-amplifier or suitable active loudspeakers.
The PerformanceDAC supports:
- PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz
- Native DSD up to DSD512
- Stereo RCA analogue output

Who Should Choose the PerformanceDAC?
The PerformanceDAC suits customers who want a high-resolution analogue source without adding a separate DAC, interconnect and mains cable.
It may be particularly appropriate where the amplifier has high-quality RCA line inputs and balanced connection is not essential.
The PhoenixDAC is the more ambitious choice where dual-mono conversion, XLR outputs and its dedicated power architecture are justified by the rest of the system.
PhoenixDAC Board
The PhoenixDAC is exclusive to the STREAM3 and is the range’s highest-level internal analogue-output option.
It uses a dual-mono design with separate AKM DAC chips for the left and right channels.
An oven-controlled crystal oscillator acts as the main timing reference, supported by dedicated premium audio clocks.
Separate regulation is used for the digital and analogue stages, with an additional internal power-supply module developed in partnership with Dr Sean Jacobs.
Gold-plated RCA and balanced XLR outputs allow the STREAM3 to connect directly to a wide range of integrated amplifiers, pre-amplifiers and active loudspeakers.

Use One Analogue Connection Type
Choose either RCA or XLR for the connection to the amplifier unless both product manufacturers explicitly approve simultaneous use.
Balanced XLR may be particularly helpful with compatible equipment and longer analogue cable runs.

S/PDIF Digital Output Board
The S/PDIF Board is intended for systems using an external DAC or amplifier with conventional digital inputs.
It provides:
- Coaxial S/PDIF output
- Optical Toslink output
- Balanced AES digital output
- PCM support up to 24-bit/192kHz
- Optimised low-noise power regulation
- High-quality gold-plated connections where applicable
The board does not convert the signal to analogue, so a separate DAC remains essential.
Choosing Optical, Coaxial or AES
Optical Toslink provides electrical isolation between the STREAM3 and DAC.
Coaxial S/PDIF uses a 75-ohm electrical connection and is widely supported by domestic DACs and amplifiers.
AES uses a balanced 110-ohm connection and is common on professional and higher-level digital equipment.
The best connection will depend on the input quality of the DAC, the cable length and the wider system. Where possible, compare the available inputs rather than assuming one format must always be superior.
PhoenixUSB Board
The PhoenixUSB Board adds a regenerated and reclocked USB output for a compatible USB Audio Class 2 DAC.
Its design incorporates:
- A 3-parts-per-billion 24MHz OCXO master clock
- Ultra-low-noise LT3045 linear regulators
- Independent regulation for the USB voltage rails
- No switching regulators on the principal USB chip
- A clean regulated 5V USB line
The PhoenixUSB module brings the principal technology of the standalone Innuos PhoenixUSB Reclocker inside the STREAM3.

PhoenixI2S Board
The PhoenixI2S Board provides a direct I2S digital connection through an HDMI-format socket.
I2S carries separate clock and audio-data signals and can bypass some of the encoding and recovery stages required by conventional S/PDIF connections.
The board includes:

- An HDMI-format I2S connection
- Eight selectable pin configurations

I2S over HDMI Is Not Conventional HDMI
The PhoenixI2S connection does not carry television video, HDMI ARC or conventional HDMI audio.
It must connect only to a DAC with a compatible HDMI-format I2S input and matching pin configuration.
Check I2S Pin Compatibility
There is no universally fixed consumer pin arrangement for I2S over HDMI.
The STREAM3 provides eight selectable configurations to improve compatibility with different DAC manufacturers.
The correct setting must be confirmed before playback. An ordinary television, projector, AV receiver or HDMI input must not be used.

ARC6-CX Linear Power Supply
The STREAM3 contains Innuos’s integrated ARC6-CX linear power-supply architecture.
It was developed in collaboration with Dr Sean Jacobs and combines active rectification, a substantial capacitor bank and CX regulation within one internal module.
The design uses:
- A 300VA toroidal transformer
- Medical-grade mains filtering
- Active rectification
- 132,000uF of Mundorf capacitance
- Innuos CX regulation
- Low-impedance internal power delivery
This is a substantial step beyond the external switch-mode supply used by the standard STREAM1.
Active Rectification
Conventional linear power supplies commonly use passive diodes to convert incoming alternating current into direct current.
The STREAM3’s active-rectification stage is designed to reduce voltage loss and impedance within this part of the power supply.
The large capacitor bank then stores energy for the processor, storage and output circuits.
132,000uF Mundorf Capacitor Bank
The ARC6-CX module uses a total of 132,000uF of Mundorf capacitance.
This substantial energy reserve supports the changing current demands of the digital processor and selected output module.
Capacitance alone does not determine power-supply quality, so Innuos combines it with transformer design, active rectification, filtering, grounding and CX regulation.
300VA Toroidal Transformer
A large 300VA toroidal transformer supplies the ARC6-CX power architecture.
The transformer is considerably oversized for the average continuous power consumption of a music streamer, allowing the supply to operate with substantial electrical headroom.
The STREAM3 connects directly to the mains through its rear IEC inlet and does not require an external LPS1.
Medical-Grade AC Filtering
Medical-grade mains filtering is used at the AC input to reduce unwanted high-frequency noise entering or leaving the product through the power connection.
The STREAM3 should still be connected to a correctly wired and earthed mains supply.
Any external mains conditioner should be demonstrated to ensure that it does not restrict the performance of the internal linear supply.
4mm Chassis-Ground Connection
A rear 4mm grounding terminal provides a connection point for a suitable grounding product or system earth arrangement.
This is not a replacement for the protective earth within the mains cable.
Grounding accessories should be installed only after confirming their intended use and compatibility.
Do Not Alter the Protective Mains Earth
The chassis-ground terminal is an additional system connection.
Never disconnect, defeat or modify the safety earth in the STREAM3 mains lead or wall socket.
13th-Generation Intel Quad-Core Processor
The STREAM3 uses the current STREAM Series mainboard with a 13th-generation Intel quad-core processor.
This provides responsive library browsing, streaming, metadata management and system operation without relying on a general-purpose desktop computer.
Innuos states that the platform provides more than twice the processing performance of its predecessor while remaining efficient enough for a fanless audio design.
8GB Industrial-Grade DDR5 Memory
Eight gigabytes of industrial-grade DDR5 memory support the operating system, Sense interface, library database and optional Roon functions.
The memory is selected as part of the complete audio platform rather than offered as a user-upgradeable computer specification.
Dedicated Operating-System SSD
The operating system is installed on a dedicated industrial TLC SSD with power-loss protection.
This system drive is separate from the optional M.2 NVMe music-storage drive.
Separating the operating system and music library simplifies storage upgrades and prevents large library transfers from sharing one physical drive with the core system files.
Real-Time Kernel Technology
Innuos uses a low-latency Real-Time Kernel derived from its ZEN Next-Gen systems.
The operating environment prioritises important audio processes and reduces unnecessary background activity.
The complete hardware and software platform is developed as a dedicated music appliance rather than a conventional computer with an audio application added afterwards.
Optional Internal Music Storage
The STREAM3 contains one accessible M.2 NVMe music-storage bay.
Current factory-fitted capacities are:
- 2TB M.2 NVMe SSD
- 4TB M.2 NVMe SSD
- 8TB M.2 NVMe SSD
A compatible owner-supplied NVMe drive can also be installed through the external storage bay.
M.2 SATA Drives Are Not Supported
The storage drive must use the NVMe standard.
An M.2 SATA drive may fit physically but will not operate. Drives fitted with large heatsinks may also prevent the storage-bay shield from being refitted.
Recommended Owner-Supplied Storage
Innuos currently recommends the WD Red SN700 for capacities up to 4TB because of its balance of speed, power consumption and longevity.
For an 8TB installation, Innuos uses the WD Black SN850X because a WD Red model is not available at that capacity.
Other brands may operate, but the drive must be NVMe, physically compatible and suitable for use without a large external heatsink.

Internal storage enables the full music-server capabilities of Innuos Sense.

Playing Music from a NAS
The STREAM3 can access music held on a compatible NAS drive or network server.
This allows an existing music library to remain centralised without installing internal storage immediately.
The performance and browsing experience will depend on the NAS, home network, file structure and selected control mode.
USB Storage Playback
Compatible USB drives can be connected for direct music playback.
Innuos identifies this as Folder View playback rather than complete Sense library integration.
For full metadata browsing, Smart Mixes and library management, import the files to internal NVMe storage.
Importing Music
Music files can be imported from compatible USB drives or supported network locations.
Always maintain a separate backup before importing, moving or reorganising a large collection.
The STREAM3’s internal music SSD should not be treated as the only copy of valuable music files.
CD Ripping with an External USB Drive
The STREAM3 does not contain a built-in CD mechanism.
With internal music storage installed, a compatible external USB optical drive can be used to rip audio CDs.
The Innuos ripping engine can retrieve metadata from:
- Discogs
- FreeDB
- GD3
- MusicBrainz
Discs can be stored as FLAC or WAV files.
Storage Is Required for CD Ripping
An external optical drive alone is not sufficient.
A compatible M.2 NVMe music-storage drive must also be installed in the STREAM3.
Innuos Sense
Sense is Innuos’s own control, playback and library-management platform.
It combines compatible streaming services, local music, NAS libraries, internet radio and podcasts within one interface.
Sense can be accessed through:

The phone or tablet controls playback, but the STREAM3 communicates directly with the music service or library.

Connect Service Playback
Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect and Qobuz Connect allow their respective applications to select the STREAM3 as the playback device.
The service then streams directly to the Innuos rather than routing the audio continuously through the phone or tablet.
Sense remains available for local libraries, integrated service browsing and detailed system settings.

Actual output resolution depends on the selected module and connected DAC.
PCM and DSD Support
The general STREAM3 platform supports PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz.
DSD support extends to DSD256 through DoP and DSD512 through compatible native DSD operation.
The S/PDIF Board is limited to PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz, while the PhoenixI2S architecture is designed for compatibility up to DSD1024 with a suitable DAC.
Two Bridged 2.5Gb Ethernet Ports
The STREAM3 provides two 2.5Gb Ethernet connections.
One normally connects to the router or network switch. The bridged Streamer port can then pass a wired network connection to another compatible device.
This can reduce the number of separate network cables returning to the switch, although it does not replace a multiport network switch where several components require connections.
Wired Network Only
The STREAM3 does not include Wi-Fi.
A wired Ethernet connection is required for initial setup, Sense control, online streaming, metadata retrieval and software updates.
Plan the Network Connection Before Installation
The STREAM3 cannot be configured as a completely wireless streamer.
Arrange an Ethernet cable, suitable network switch or properly configured wired-network extension before delivery.
USB Connections
The STREAM3 provides three USB 3.2 Type-A sockets and one USB-C connection.
Depending on the connected device and operating mode, these can be used for:
- USB DAC audio output
- Music imports
- Library backups
- USB Folder View playback
- An external optical drive
- Charging a compatible mobile device
Not every USB accessory or file system is guaranteed to operate.
HDMI Service Connection
The fixed HDMI socket on the rear panel is reserved for service purposes.
It is not a television output, conventional HDMI audio output, ARC connection or I2S socket.
An I2S connection is available only when the optional PhoenixI2S module is installed.
Do Not Confuse the Two HDMI-Format Connections
The fixed chassis HDMI socket is for service only.
The PhoenixI2S module uses an HDMI-format connector for I2S audio. Neither connection should be attached to an ordinary television or AV receiver input.
STREAM Remote Control Included
The dedicated Innuos STREAM Remote is supplied as standard with STREAM3.
It provides direct access to:

- Play and pause
- Previous and next track
- Volume where supported by the selected output and system
- Ten numbered presets
- Play Anything shortcut
Presets can be assigned through Sense to playlists, Smart Mixes and radio stations.
Remote-Control Batteries
The STREAM Remote uses two AAA batteries.
Batteries may not be supplied, so it is sensible to have a suitable pair available during installation.
The remote communicates using infrared and therefore requires a reasonable line of sight to the STREAM3.
Innuos Standalone Mode
Standalone mode uses Sense as the principal playback and library platform.
The STREAM3 handles streaming services, local libraries, internet radio, podcasts and playback through its selected audio output.
Innuos Endpoint Mode
Endpoint mode allows the STREAM3 to receive music from another compatible Innuos server or Logitech Media Server environment.
This can be useful when building an Innuos multiroom system or adding the STREAM3 to an existing server installation.
Roon Core Mode
The STREAM3 can operate as a Roon Core with a separate Roon subscription.
Suitability will depend on library size, DSP use and the number of simultaneous playback zones.
When Roon is selected, Roon handles principal library and playback duties rather than Sense.
Roon Endpoint Mode
The STREAM3 can also act as a Roon endpoint where another product already runs the Roon Core.
Playback is then sent through the standard USB output or fitted output module.
HQPlayer and AssetUPnP
HQPlayer NAA endpoint operation is supported.
AssetUPnP can be used in server mode for compatible UPnP network players.
Available functions depend on the selected operating mode and will not necessarily be active simultaneously.
Music-Library Backups
Any music stored inside the STREAM3 should be backed up to an independent USB drive or network location.
An internal NVMe SSD is reliable but remains vulnerable to accidental deletion, corruption or hardware failure.
A second folder on the same internal drive is not a genuine backup.
10mm CNC-Machined Aluminium Chassis
The STREAM3 uses a substantial full-width enclosure with 10mm-thick CNC-machined aluminium construction.
The bead-blasted and anodised case provides mechanical rigidity, electromagnetic shielding and a stable platform for the transformer, power supply and digital circuitry.
Its 12.8kg weight reflects the large internal transformer, extensive capacitor bank and substantial casework.
Dimensions and Placement
The STREAM3 measures 420mm wide, 330mm deep and 85mm high.
Allow additional rear clearance for the mains cable, Ethernet connections, USB devices and the selected output module.
Place it on a rigid and level equipment shelf capable of supporting at least 12.8kg.
Do not position it directly on top of a hot power amplifier or enclose it within a cabinet without airflow.
Black and Silver Finishes
Black
The Black version provides an understated finish that coordinates with most dark Hi-Fi components and equipment racks.
Silver
The Silver version provides a natural-aluminium appearance for systems using lighter or silver-finish electronics.
Both finishes use the same internal architecture and modular options.

- Place the STREAM3 on a stable and ventilated equipment shelf.
- Connect the LAN Ethernet port to the router or network switch.
