Audio T Verdict
The WiiM Mini is one of the simplest and most affordable ways to add capable network streaming to an existing amplifier, receiver, DAC, powered-speaker system or soundbar.
Its optical output supports up to 24-bit/192kHz, while AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, DLNA, RoomFit, detailed EQ and two-way Bluetooth provide a remarkably broad feature set for such a compact product.
There is no built-in amplifier, Ethernet, Google Cast, Roon Ready certification or usable USB audio connection. Customers needing those facilities, more connections or improved analogue conversion should consider the WiiM Pro, Pro Plus or Ultra.
WiiM Mini Hi-Res Audio Streamer
The WiiM Mini brings app-controlled music streaming and multiroom playback to an existing audio system without replacing the amplifier, receiver, DAC or powered speakers already in use.
Connect its 3.5mm analogue output to a line-level input, or use the optical output with a compatible digital input or external DAC.
At only 69mm wide, the Mini can sit discreetly behind a system, beside powered speakers or close to a spare input on an older amplifier.
An Amplifier or Powered Speaker Is Required
The WiiM Mini is a music streamer rather than a power amplifier. It cannot drive passive loudspeakers directly.
Connect it to an amplifier, receiver, powered speakers, compatible soundbar or another product with a suitable analogue or optical input.
High-Resolution Optical Output
The optical digital output supports compatible audio at up to 24-bit/192kHz, allowing the Mini to operate as a compact digital streaming transport.
This is particularly useful with an amplifier, receiver or external DAC that already has a capable optical input. The maximum optical resolution can be selected in the WiiM Home app to suit the connected product.
Fixed and variable output modes are available. Fixed output is normally appropriate when volume will be controlled by the downstream amplifier, while variable output allows level adjustment from the WiiM system.
Check Volume and Digital Compatibility Before Listening
Start with a low volume when using variable output. When fixed output is selected, the connected amplifier or powered speaker must provide a safe method of controlling listening level.
If a DAC or amplifier cannot lock to the selected optical resolution, choose a lower output setting in the WiiM Home app.
TI PCM5121 Analogue Conversion
A Texas Instruments PCM5121 DAC provides a 2Vrms analogue output through the 3.5mm Aux Out connection.
WiiM specifies an analogue-output signal-to-noise ratio of 106dB and THD+N of 0.0025%, allowing the Mini to connect directly to a conventional line-level input or suitable powered speakers.
The optical output provides a straightforward upgrade route if a higher-performance external DAC or digital input is added later.
Streaming Services and Network Libraries
The WiiM Home platform provides access to compatible music services, internet radio, podcasts, music stored on a phone and suitable DLNA network libraries.
Supported technologies include Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, AirPlay 2, Alexa Cast and DLNA. Qobuz, Amazon Music, Deezer and other compatible services are available through the WiiM Home platform.
Precise gapless playback helps albums, live recordings and classical works flow without unwanted pauses where the source and service support it.
Service availability can vary by region and some services require a separate subscription.
AirPlay 2 for Apple Systems
AirPlay 2 allows compatible iPhone, iPad and Mac devices to send audio to the WiiM Mini and enables Siri control through a suitable Apple device.
The Mini can join an AirPlay 2 group with compatible Apple HomePod speakers and other AirPlay 2 receivers for synchronised multiroom playback.
AirPlay 2 Is an Input, Not an Output
The WiiM Mini receives AirPlay 2 streams but does not transmit its Aux input, Bluetooth input or other sources to HomePod or third-party AirPlay speakers.
Its Aux input can instead be distributed to compatible WiiM devices through the WiiM Home platform.
Wi-Fi 5 Connectivity
Dual-band Wi-Fi 5 supports suitable 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless networks.
Careful positioning and good Wi-Fi coverage are important, particularly when streaming high-resolution audio or synchronising several rooms.
No Ethernet, Google Cast or Roon Ready Support
The WiiM Mini does not have an Ethernet socket and does not support Google Cast Audio, Google Nest speaker grouping or Google voice control.
It is not Roon Ready. It may be accessible to a Roon system as an AirPlay endpoint, but it does not provide the certified native Roon integration available from the WiiM Pro and Pro Plus.
YouTube Music is not supported inside the WiiM Home app on the Mini.
RoomFit Room Correction
WiiM RoomFit uses a compatible phone or external measurement microphone to analyse how the connected system and room affect frequency balance at the listening position.
Digital correction can then reduce the influence of particular room-related peaks and produce a more even response from the available speaker positions.
RoomFit cannot compensate for unsuitable equipment or extremely poor speaker placement, so the system should still be installed carefully before measurements are taken.
10-Band Graphic and Parametric EQ
The WiiM Home app includes preset profiles together with 10-band graphic and 10-band parametric equalisers for detailed tonal adjustment.
Per-source settings allow Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Aux input to use different profiles. This is useful when an analogue source needs different adjustment from streamed music.
Applying EQ, RoomFit or variable digital volume processes the signal, so these functions should be disabled and fixed output selected where an unadjusted digital feed is preferred.
Analogue Aux Input
A 1Vrms 3.5mm Aux input accepts a compatible CD player, tuner, cassette deck, television, portable player or external phono stage.
The analogue signal is converted to digital at a fixed 16-bit/48kHz so it can use WiiM volume control, EQ, RoomFit and compatible WiiM multiroom distribution.
A Phono Stage Is Required for Most Turntables
The Aux connection is a line-level input rather than a dedicated moving-magnet or moving-coil phono input.
A turntable must have a suitable phono stage built in or be connected through a separate external phono stage.
Two-Way Bluetooth 5.0
Bluetooth 5.0 can receive music from a compatible phone, tablet, computer or television using the SBC or AAC codec.
The connection is bidirectional, allowing the Mini to send audio to compatible Bluetooth headphones, earphones or wireless speakers.
Bluetooth is convenient, but Wi-Fi streaming or the optical output may provide better performance and stability for critical listening.
WiiM, AirPlay and Alexa Multiroom
Multiple compatible WiiM products can be grouped in the WiiM Home app for synchronised playback, and two compatible WiiM streamers can be assigned left and right channels as a stereo pair.
The Mini can also join compatible AirPlay 2 or Amazon Alexa speaker groups. Available sources, maximum quality and control behaviour depend on the multiroom platform being used.
Wireless WiiM Subwoofer Pairing
Current WiiM software allows the Mini to pair with compatible WiiM wireless subwoofer models, including the WiiM Sub Pro.
This provides app-controlled bass integration without a physical subwoofer output on the Mini. A conventional powered subwoofer cannot be connected directly because there is no dedicated RCA subwoofer socket.
Automatic Latency Calibration
A built-in microphone can measure the delay introduced by the connected amplifier or speaker system.
WiiM uses this information to improve synchronisation with other compatible players in a multiroom system.
The microphone is intended for latency calibration. It is not a hands-free Siri or Alexa microphone.
Touch Controls and Optional Voice Remote
Capacitive controls on the top panel provide play, pause, volume up and volume down, while a three-colour LED indicates operating status.
The optional WiiM Voice Remote is compatible with the Mini and adds playback, volume, source, preset and push-to-talk Alexa control after pairing through the WiiM Home app.
Siri and Alexa control otherwise require a suitable external Apple or Alexa-enabled device.
USB-C Power
The Mini is powered through USB-C and requires a 5V/1A supply. A suitable USB cable and power adapter are included in the current package.
The USB-C Socket Is for Power Only
The USB-C connection does not support USB storage, computer audio input or USB audio output.
