Audio T Verdict
The WiiM Pro Plus combines the Pro's extensive streaming platform and connections with a significantly upgraded analogue input and output stage.
Its AKM 4493SEQ DAC, low-noise circuitry and TI PCM1861 analogue-to-digital converter make it the better choice when the stereo RCA connections will be used, while AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Roon Ready, Ethernet, RoomFit and flexible multiroom support remain comprehensive.
The supplied Voice Remote adds useful everyday control. There is still no power amplifier, HDMI ARC, USB audio or conventional subwoofer output, and customers using an external DAC exclusively may find the standard WiiM Pro equally suitable.
WiiM Pro Plus Hi-Res Music Streamer
The WiiM Pro Plus brings app-controlled streaming, high-resolution digital audio and flexible multiroom playback to an existing Hi-Fi or powered-speaker system.
Stereo RCA, optical and coaxial outputs allow it to work with amplifiers, receivers, DACs, powered speakers and compatible soundbars.
Analogue line and optical digital inputs can also bring an existing source into the WiiM system for local playback, RoomFit, EQ and compatible WiiM multiroom distribution.
An Amplifier or Powered Speaker Is Required
The WiiM Pro Plus is a music streamer rather than a power amplifier. It cannot drive passive loudspeakers directly.
Connect it to an amplifier, receiver, powered speakers, compatible soundbar or another product with a suitable analogue, optical or coaxial input.
AKM 4493SEQ DAC and Premium Analogue Output
An AKM 4493SEQ DAC with Velvet Sound technology is partnered with carefully designed low-noise clock, power and output circuitry.
The current manufacturer specification lists a 121dB A-weighted signal-to-noise ratio and THD+N of -113dB, or 0.00023%, for the analogue output.
The stereo RCA output provides up to 2Vrms and can operate at a fixed level into an integrated amplifier or at a variable level with volume controlled by the WiiM system.
24-bit/192kHz Product Playback
The WiiM Pro Plus supports compatible network playback, optical input and optical or coaxial digital output at up to 24-bit/192kHz.
DAC Chip Capability Is Not the Product Playback Limit
The AKM 4493SEQ silicon can support higher rates in other implementations, but the WiiM Pro Plus product is specified for playback and digital output up to 24-bit/192kHz.
It should not be described as a 768kHz or DSD512 network player.
Improved TI PCM1861 Analogue Input
A TI Burr-Brown PCM1861 analogue-to-digital converter provides a cleaner, higher-resolution line-input path than the converter used in the standard WiiM Pro.
The converter hardware uses 32-bit internal processing, while the current WiiM system specification lists analogue-input conversion at up to 24-bit/192kHz with a manufacturer-quoted ADC signal-to-noise ratio of 110dB.
This makes the Pro Plus the more appropriate choice when a CD player, tuner, cassette deck, television, pre-amplified turntable or another analogue source will be distributed through the WiiM system.
A Phono Stage Is Required for Most Turntables
The 1Vrms RCA connection is a line-level input rather than a dedicated moving-magnet or moving-coil phono input.
A turntable must have a suitable phono stage built in or be connected through a separate external phono stage.
High-Resolution Digital Outputs
Optical and coaxial digital outputs support compatible audio at up to 24-bit/192kHz, allowing the Pro Plus to operate as a dedicated digital streaming transport.
This provides flexibility if the connected amplifier or receiver already contains a preferred DAC, or if a separate external DAC is added later.
Maximum optical and coaxial resolutions can be selected in the WiiM Home app to suit the connected product.
Fixed or Variable Output
Fixed output is normally appropriate when volume will be controlled by the downstream amplifier, receiver or powered speakers.
Variable output allows listening level to be adjusted through the WiiM Home app, touch controls, voice assistant or supplied WiiM Voice Remote.
For bit-perfect digital output, WiiM recommends fixed volume with EQ, RoomFit, mono and other signal processing disabled.
Check Volume and Digital Compatibility Before Listening
Start with a low volume when using variable output. When fixed output is selected, the connected equipment must provide a safe method of controlling listening level.
If a DAC or amplifier cannot lock to the selected digital resolution, choose a lower output setting in the WiiM Home app.
High-Resolution Optical Input
The optical digital input accepts stereo PCM at up to 24-bit/192kHz from a compatible television, CD transport, computer or another digital source.
The incoming signal can use WiiM volume control, RoomFit, EQ, Bluetooth output and compatible WiiM multiroom distribution.
Optical Input Supports Stereo PCM Only
Dolby Digital and DTS are not supported. Set a connected television, disc player or computer to output stereo PCM if no sound is heard.
The Pro Plus does not include HDMI ARC.
Streaming Services and Network Libraries
The WiiM Home platform provides access to compatible music services, internet radio, podcasts and suitable DLNA network libraries.
Supported technologies include AirPlay 2, Google Cast Audio, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Alexa Cast, Roon Ready and DLNA. Qobuz, Amazon Music, Deezer and other compatible services are also available.
Precise gapless playback helps albums, live recordings and classical works flow without unwanted pauses where the source and service support it.
Service availability can vary by region and some services require a separate subscription.
AirPlay 2 for Apple Systems
AirPlay 2 allows compatible iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV devices to send audio to the WiiM Pro Plus and enables Siri control through a suitable Apple device.
The Pro Plus can join an AirPlay 2 group with compatible Apple HomePod speakers and other AirPlay 2 receivers for synchronised multiroom playback.
Google Cast Audio
Google Cast allows compatible apps on a phone, tablet or computer to send music, radio, podcasts and other audio to the Pro Plus over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
It can join compatible Google Home and Nest speaker groups and can be controlled through a suitable Google Assistant device.
Roon Ready
Roon Ready certification allows the WiiM Pro Plus to operate as a recognised network endpoint in a compatible Roon system.
Roon provides library management, rich metadata and multiroom control, but requires separate Roon Server hardware or software and an appropriate Roon subscription.
Wi-Fi 5 and Ethernet
Dual-band Wi-Fi 5 supports suitable 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless networks.
A 10/100 Ethernet connection provides a wired alternative and may be preferable where Wi-Fi coverage is weak, congested or unsuitable for reliable high-resolution and multiroom playback.
Connecting Ethernet automatically disables Wi-Fi and switches the Pro Plus to the wired network connection.
RoomFit Room Correction
WiiM RoomFit uses a compatible phone or external measurement microphone to analyse how the connected system and room affect frequency balance at the listening position.
Digital correction can then reduce the influence of particular room-related peaks and produce a more even response from the available speaker positions.
RoomFit cannot compensate for unsuitable equipment or extremely poor speaker placement, so the system should still be installed carefully before measurements are taken.
10-Band Graphic and Parametric EQ
The WiiM Home app includes preset profiles together with 10-band graphic and 10-band parametric equalisers for detailed tonal adjustment.
Per-source settings allow network, Bluetooth, line and optical inputs to use different profiles.
EQ and RoomFit process the audio signal, so they should be disabled where an unadjusted bit-perfect digital feed is preferred.
Two-Way Bluetooth 5.0
Bluetooth 5.0 can receive music from a compatible phone, tablet, computer or television using the SBC or AAC codec.
The connection is bidirectional, allowing the Pro Plus to send audio to compatible Bluetooth headphones, earphones or wireless speakers.
Bluetooth is convenient, but Wi-Fi, Ethernet or a wired audio connection may provide better performance and stability for critical listening.
Flexible Multiroom Audio
Compatible WiiM products can be grouped in the WiiM Home app for synchronised playback, and two compatible WiiM streamers can be assigned left and right channels as a stereo pair.
AirPlay 2, Amazon Alexa and Google Cast provide additional grouping options with compatible third-party products.
Physical Inputs Require an All-WiiM Group
Network music services can play through compatible AirPlay 2, Alexa or Google Cast groups according to the selected platform.
Audio received through Line In, optical input or Bluetooth can be distributed to compatible WiiM devices, but it cannot be retransmitted to HomePod, Amazon Echo, Google Home or third-party Cast speakers.
Wireless WiiM Subwoofer Pairing
Current WiiM software allows the Pro Plus to pair with compatible WiiM wireless subwoofer models, including the WiiM Sub Pro.
This provides app-controlled bass integration without a physical subwoofer output on the Pro Plus. A conventional powered subwoofer cannot be connected directly because there is no dedicated RCA subwoofer socket.
12V Trigger Output
A 2.5mm 12V trigger output can switch compatible amplifiers, DACs or other equipment on and off in response to the Pro Plus's operating state.
The connected component must have a compatible 12V trigger input, and the correct cable and trigger polarity should be confirmed before connection.
Automatic Latency Calibration
A built-in microphone can measure the delay introduced by the connected amplifier or speaker system.
WiiM uses this information to improve synchronisation with other compatible players in AirPlay, Alexa, Google Cast and WiiM multiroom systems.
The microphone is used only for latency measurement. It is not a hands-free voice-assistant microphone.
WiiM Voice Remote Included
The supplied Bluetooth remote provides standby, playback, track selection, volume, mute, source and four preset controls without requiring direct line of sight.
Its push-to-talk microphone supports compatible Alexa voice commands after the relevant account has been configured in the WiiM Home app.
Two AAA batteries are required for the remote and may need to be purchased separately.
Touch Controls
Capacitive controls on the Pro Plus provide play, pause, volume up, volume down and preset selection, while a three-colour LED indicates operating status.
USB-C Power
The Pro Plus is powered through USB-C and requires at least 5V/1.5A. A 5V/2A adapter and suitable USB-C cable are included in the current package.
The USB-C Socket Is for Power Only
The USB-C connection does not support USB storage, computer audio input or USB audio output.
WiiM Pro or Pro Plus?
Both models support the same 24-bit/192kHz network platform, AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Roon Ready, Ethernet, RoomFit, optical input, optical and coaxial outputs, two-way Bluetooth and WiiM multiroom features.
The Pro Plus adds an AKM 4493SEQ DAC, substantially improved analogue-output measurements, a TI PCM1861 high-resolution analogue input stage and the WiiM Voice Remote in the package.
Choose the standard Pro when using its digital output with an external DAC and the analogue sections are unimportant. Choose the Pro Plus when its RCA input or output will be central to the system.
