Audio T Verdict
Sonos Era 100 takes the straightforward idea behind the enormously successful Sonos One and gives it a much more capable acoustic and connectivity package. Two angled tweeters mean a single Era 100 can produce genuine left and right stereo information, while the larger midwoofer gives such a compact speaker an impressive amount of weight and scale.
Just as importantly, Era 100 is considerably more flexible about where the music comes from. Sonos streaming over WiFi remains at the heart of the experience, but Bluetooth 5.3 makes it quick for visitors or occasional devices to connect, while the optional Sonos Line-In Adapter allows a turntable, CD player or other analogue source to join the system.
Use one on a kitchen counter, desk or bookshelf, pair two for a much wider stereo system, or use a pair as wireless rear speakers in a compatible Sonos home cinema setup. Add Trueplay, AirPlay 2 and voice control and Era 100 becomes one of the easiest ways of adding serious music playback to almost any room in the house.
Sonos Era 100 Smart Wireless Speaker
Sonos Era 100 is a compact wireless smart speaker designed for music, multi-room audio and compatible Sonos home cinema systems.
Three Class-D amplifiers power two angled tweeters and a dedicated midwoofer, allowing a single speaker to produce surprisingly broad stereo separation while retaining the compact footprint expected from a Sonos room speaker.
WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, Apple AirPlay 2, Trueplay room tuning and optional USB-C line-in give Era 100 several ways to access music, while Sonos Voice Control and Amazon Alexa provide compatible hands-free operation.

True Stereo From a Single Compact Speaker
One of the most significant acoustic differences between Era 100 and the older Sonos One is the use of two tweeters instead of one.
The tweeters are angled away from one another so the left and right high-frequency information is projected in different directions.
This gives a single Era 100 a broader stereo presentation than a conventional mono smart speaker, allowing music to spread beyond the physical dimensions of the cabinet.
Two Angled Tweeters
The twin tweeters handle high-frequency information and are positioned to create separation between the left and right channels.
This is particularly useful when Era 100 is being used on its own in a kitchen, bedroom, office or other room where fitting a conventional pair of speakers would be inconvenient.
Is One Era 100 Really Stereo?
Yes. A single Era 100 reproduces left and right stereo information through its two angled tweeters.
However, the physical distance between those tweeters is naturally much smaller than the spacing between two separate loudspeakers.
For the widest and most precisely separated stereo soundstage, a pair of Era 100 speakers remains the better solution.
One Speaker for Convenience, Two for a Proper Stereo Soundstage
A single Era 100 is ideal when space and simplicity matter. If music listening is the priority and you have room for two speakers, a stereo pair creates substantially greater separation and a more conventional left-to-right soundstage.
Dedicated Midwoofer
A dedicated midwoofer handles voices, instruments and low-frequency information.
Sonos increased the woofer size compared with the previous Sonos One generation, allowing Era 100 to produce deeper and more substantial bass from a cabinet that remains easy to place around the home.
Three Class-D Amplifiers
Each of the speaker's acoustic elements is driven by dedicated Class-D amplification tuned specifically for the Era 100 enclosure and driver arrangement.
Because Sonos controls the amplification, drivers and signal processing as one system, the speaker can be optimised as a complete package rather than relying on the compromises involved in matching separate amplification and speakers.
Compact Enough for Almost Any Room
Era 100 measures only 182.5mm high, 120mm wide and 130.5mm deep.
That compact footprint makes it equally comfortable on:
- Bookshelves
- Kitchen counters
- Bedside tables
- Desks
- Sideboards
- Dedicated Sonos stands
- Compatible wall mounts
WiFi 6
Era 100 is compatible with WiFi 6 and can connect to suitable 2.4GHz or 5GHz wireless networks.
For normal Sonos listening, WiFi provides the most complete experience because it allows Era 100 to access streaming services, work as part of a multi-room system and maintain synchronised playback with other Sonos rooms.
Why Use WiFi Instead of Bluetooth?
Bluetooth is extremely convenient for a quick direct connection, but WiFi provides several advantages within a Sonos system.
Music streams directly to the Sonos product rather than continuously through the phone, so an incoming call or notification does not need to interrupt playback.
WiFi also allows several Sonos rooms to remain synchronised and provides access to the wider Sonos app and streaming ecosystem.
WiFi
- Best for everyday Sonos use
- Direct music-service streaming
- Sonos multi-room playback
- Apple AirPlay 2
- Grouping with other Sonos rooms
- Not interrupted by normal phone calls
Bluetooth
- Quick direct device connection
- Useful for visitors
- Works with a broad range of Bluetooth sources
- No need to select a service inside the Sonos app
- Can be shared to grouped Sonos products after setup
- Requires Era 100 to be initially set up over WiFi
Bluetooth 5.3
Era 100 supports Bluetooth 5.3 for direct audio playback from compatible phones, tablets, computers and other Bluetooth-enabled devices.
A dedicated button on the rear of the speaker is used for pairing and reconnecting.
Press and hold the button to enter pairing mode, then select Era 100 from the Bluetooth menu on the source device.
Era 100 Must Be Set Up on WiFi First
Although Era 100 includes Bluetooth, it is still fundamentally part of the Sonos network ecosystem.
Sonos requires the speaker to be initially configured through the Sonos app on a WiFi network before Bluetooth playback becomes available.
Bluetooth Does Not Bypass Initial Sonos Setup
You cannot simply unpack Era 100 and use it immediately as a standalone Bluetooth speaker. Complete the initial Sonos app and WiFi setup first. Bluetooth can then be used whenever required.
Share Bluetooth Audio Around the Sonos System
Era 100 can remain connected to the Sonos network while receiving Bluetooth audio.
This means the incoming Bluetooth source can be shared with compatible Sonos rooms by grouping them together in the Sonos app.
A guest can therefore connect a phone to one Era 100 over Bluetooth and have that music play through several Sonos rooms without every speaker needing its own Bluetooth connection.
Apple AirPlay 2
AirPlay 2 allows compatible iPhone, iPad and Mac users to send audio directly to Era 100 over WiFi.
This makes it particularly easy to play audio from an app that may not have its own dedicated Sonos service integration.
AirPlay 2 also allows compatible Sonos products to participate in Apple's own multi-room audio environment.
Sonos App Streaming
The Sonos app brings supported streaming services, radio, stored music and system settings together in one place.
Each Sonos room can play independently or be grouped with other rooms when you want synchronised playback around the home.
USB-C Line-In
The USB-C socket on the back of Era 100 can be used to add a conventional line-level audio source, but a Sonos adapter is required.
With the appropriate adapter you can connect equipment such as:
- Turntables with a built-in phono stage
- Turntables through an external phono stage
- CD players
- Tuners
- Cassette decks
- Portable music players
- Other line-level analogue sources
Sonos Line-In Adapter
The Sonos Era Line-In USB-C Adapter converts Era 100's USB-C connection to a conventional 3.5mm analogue line input.
You then need an appropriate 3.5mm or RCA-to-3.5mm audio cable according to the source being connected.
Line-In Adapter and Audio Cable Are Sold Separately
Era 100 does not include the Sonos Line-In Adapter or an auxiliary audio cable in the box. These need to be added separately if you want to connect a traditional wired audio source.
Standard Line-In Resolution
Sonos specifies its standard analogue line-in conversion at 16-bit / 44.1kHz.
The Sonos Line-In Adapter and Combo Adapter convert the incoming analogue signal to this digital format so it can be played locally or distributed around the Sonos system.
Connect a Turntable
A turntable can be a particularly enjoyable partner for Era 100 because the record player can become available throughout a Sonos multi-room system.
You will need:
- A turntable with a built-in phono stage, or a separate external phono preamplifier.
- An RCA-to-3.5mm cable or appropriate analogue connection.
- The Sonos Line-In Adapter or compatible Sonos Combo Adapter.
- Era 100 already configured within the Sonos system.
Era 100 Does Not Have a Phono Stage
A conventional moving magnet or moving coil cartridge produces a signal far below normal line level. Unless the turntable already includes a phono preamplifier, connect it to a suitable phono stage before connecting it to Era 100.
Share Your Turntable Around the House
Once the turntable signal enters Era 100 through line-in, it can be selected as a source within the Sonos system.
The record can therefore play from the Era 100 itself or be grouped with compatible Sonos speakers elsewhere around the home.
This provides a useful bridge between analogue vinyl playback and a modern multi-room system.
Connect a CD Player
A CD player with analogue RCA outputs can also be connected using the Line-In Adapter and an RCA-to-3.5mm cable.
As with a turntable, the incoming signal can then be played locally or shared with grouped Sonos rooms.
Line-In Autoplay
Era 100 can be configured to detect an incoming line-level signal and automatically start playback in a selected Sonos room.
This is particularly useful with a regularly used turntable or CD player because you do not necessarily need to manually select line-in through the app every time.
Don't Connect the TV to Era 100 Line-In
Sonos does not intend Era 100's USB-C line-in connection to function as a television input.
For television use, a Sonos soundbar or Amp provides the appropriate low-latency home cinema architecture.
Line-In Is Not a Replacement for a Sonos Soundbar
Do not use the Era 100 analogue line-in as your main TV connection. For synchronised television audio and proper Sonos home cinema operation, start with a compatible Sonos soundbar or Sonos Amp.
USB-C Is Not a Generic USB Audio Port
Era 100's USB-C connector is specifically designed for compatible Sonos line-in and Ethernet accessories.
It is not a charging output and should not be used to charge phones, headphones or other USB devices.
Do not assume that plugging a normal USB-C audio source directly into the speaker will provide audio playback.
Optional Wired Ethernet
If you prefer a hard-wired network connection, Era 100 can use Ethernet through the optional Sonos Combo Adapter.
The Combo Adapter connects to the speaker's USB-C socket and adds the required network connection while also supporting analogue line-in.
This can be useful where WiFi coverage is unreliable or where an Ethernet cable is already available at the speaker position.
Trueplay Room Tuning
Trueplay measures the way the room affects Era 100 and adjusts the speaker's equalisation accordingly.
Walls, shelves, furniture and other nearby surfaces can all reinforce or absorb different frequencies, so the same speaker can sound noticeably different depending on where it is positioned.
Era 100 offers both Quick Tuning and, for compatible iOS devices, Advanced Tuning.
Quick Trueplay Tuning
Quick Tuning uses Era 100's own built-in microphones to analyse its surroundings.
The process takes around a minute and does not require you to walk around the room waving your phone.
Quick Tuning is available through the Sonos app on both compatible iOS and Android devices.
Advanced Trueplay Tuning
Compatible iOS users can also choose Advanced Tuning.
This uses the microphone in the iPhone or iPad while you move around the listening area, providing a more detailed acoustic measurement across the room.
Sonos particularly recommends Advanced Tuning where a more precise room assessment is wanted.
Quick Tuning
- Available on iOS and Android
- Uses Era 100's built-in microphones
- Takes around one minute
- No walking around the room required
- Convenient for everyday placement
Advanced Tuning
- Available with compatible iOS devices
- Uses the iPhone or iPad microphone
- Measures across the listening area
- Takes longer to complete
- Provides a more detailed room measurement
Keep the Microphone Switch On for Quick Trueplay
Because Quick Tuning uses the microphones built into Era 100, the rear universal microphone switch needs to be enabled.
If you have physically disconnected the microphones, Quick Trueplay cannot measure the room until they are switched back on.
Two Levels of Microphone Control
Era 100 gives you two different ways of controlling microphone functions.
The touch control on the top switches voice services on or off, while leaving the microphone hardware available for functions such as Trueplay.
The physical universal microphone switch on the rear goes further and disconnects power to the microphone hardware itself.
Voice Off Does Not Have to Mean Trueplay Off
If you want to disable voice assistants but still use microphone-dependent features such as Quick Trueplay, leave the rear microphone hardware switch on and disable voice services using the top control.
Sonos Voice Control
Sonos Voice Control allows supported playback functions to be operated hands-free.
You can ask Sonos to play and control music, adjust volume and manage compatible Sonos rooms without reaching for the phone.
Amazon Alexa
Amazon Alexa is also supported where the service, language and region are compatible.
Alexa provides additional smart-assistant integration alongside the dedicated Sonos voice platform.
No Native Google Assistant
Era 100's current integrated voice options are Sonos Voice Control and Amazon Alexa.
Google Assistant is not listed as a native voice service for Era 100.
Intuitive Touch Controls
The top panel provides direct control without needing to open an app.
You can:
- Play and pause
- Swipe or tap to adjust volume
- Skip to the next track
- Return to the previous track
- Join audio already playing in another Sonos room
- Control voice-service availability
Dedicated Volume Slider
The recessed touch slider provides a particularly intuitive way of changing volume.
Slide a finger left or right for adjustment, or use the plus and minus areas for more conventional stepped control.
Controls Can Be Disabled
The touch controls can be disabled through the Sonos app.
This can be useful where the speaker is within reach of small children, pets or a particularly busy household location where accidental adjustments are likely.
Create a Stereo Pair
Two compatible Era 100 speakers can be bonded as one Sonos room, with one acting as the dedicated left channel and the other as the dedicated right channel.
This transforms Era 100 from a convenient single-box room speaker into a more conventional stereo system with substantially wider physical channel separation.
Why Stereo Pairing Makes Such a Difference
Although one Era 100 already produces stereo information, separating the left and right channels into two physical cabinets allows the soundstage to extend much further across the room.
Voices can lock more convincingly into the centre while instruments and effects occupy positions between and beyond the speakers.
Era 100 and Era 100 SL
Sonos generally requires the same speaker model for stereo pairing, but microphone-equipped models can also pair with the corresponding SL version.
This means Era 100 can be paired with the related Era 100 SL where an appropriate mixed pair is wanted.
Recommended Stereo Spacing
Sonos recommends spacing a stereo pair roughly 2.5 to 3 metres apart, with the principal listening position approximately 2.5 to 3.5 metres away.
This is guidance rather than an absolute rule, and smaller rooms naturally require proportionately closer positioning.
Use Era 100 as Rear Surround Speakers
A pair of Era 100 speakers can also be configured as dedicated rear channels in a compatible Sonos home cinema system.
Current Sonos examples include systems based around:
- Sonos Arc Ultra
- Sonos Beam
- Sonos Ray
- Sonos Amp
Physical Rear Speakers Versus Virtual Surround
A soundbar can create a surprisingly broad soundstage from the front of the room, but physical speakers behind the listening position provide a more convincing source for rear effects.
A pair of Era 100s therefore makes a significant upgrade to a compatible Sonos home cinema system where space permits.
Era 100 With Arc Ultra
Pairing two Era 100 speakers with the Sonos Arc Ultra adds physical rear channels to Sonos' flagship soundbar system.
Arc Ultra remains responsible for the front, centre and height presentation while the Era speakers move rear information to speakers positioned behind the listening area.
Era 100 With Beam (Gen 2)
A pair of Era 100 speakers is also an excellent match for the Sonos Beam (Gen 2).
The compact dimensions of both products make this combination particularly well suited to smaller and medium-sized rooms where a full-sized home cinema speaker system would be impractical.
What Changes When Era 100 Is Used as a Surround?
Once Era 100 is bonded into a Sonos home cinema system as a dedicated surround speaker, several of its normal standalone features are disabled.
These include:
- Bluetooth audio playback
- Line-in
- Individual AirPlay operation
The speaker is then functioning as part of the home cinema room rather than as an independent Sonos music room.
Line-In and Bluetooth Are Disabled in Surround Mode
If you plan to use Era 100's USB-C line input or direct Bluetooth connection regularly, remember that these functions are unavailable while the speaker is bonded as a dedicated Sonos rear surround.
Music Through Surround Speakers
When Era 100 is configured as part of a home cinema system, Sonos allows the rear-speaker behaviour for music to be adjusted.
Music playback can use an Ambient setting for a subtler surround contribution or Full mode for stronger full-range reproduction from the rear pair.
Rear-speaker level can also be adjusted independently for television and music.
Add a Sonos Sub
Era 100 can also form part of a Sonos music system with a compatible wireless Sub.
Adding the Sonos Sub Mini gives a single Era 100 or stereo pair a dedicated low-frequency system, while the larger Sonos Sub 4 provides greater bass scale for larger rooms and more ambitious systems.
Why Add a Subwoofer?
Era 100 produces impressive bass for its size, but the laws of physics still apply.
A dedicated Sonos Sub uses much larger low-frequency drivers and can reproduce deeper bass with greater output.
Once a Sub is added, Era 100 can concentrate more of its performance on the frequencies above the crossover point.
Era 100 or Era 300?
Era 100 and Era 300 occupy different positions within the Sonos range.
Era 100
- Compact conventional smart speaker
- Two angled tweeters
- Stereo reproduction from one speaker
- Excellent for kitchens, bedrooms and offices
- Bluetooth and line-in ready
- Can be stereo paired
- Can be used as rear surrounds
Era 300
- Larger spatial-audio smart speaker
- Multi-directional driver architecture
- Designed for Dolby Atmos Music
- Greater scale and spatial presentation
- Bluetooth and line-in ready
- High-performance Atmos surround option
- Better suited to more ambitious listening spaces
The Sonos Era 300 is the natural step up where Dolby Atmos Music and a more expansive spatial presentation are priorities. Era 100 remains the more compact and straightforward choice for conventional stereo music and everyday multi-room use.
Era 100 Versus the Older Sonos One
Era 100 was developed as the next generation of the compact Sonos smart-speaker concept established by Sonos One.
Major changes include:
- Two tweeters rather than one
- Wider stereo presentation from a single speaker
- Larger low-frequency driver
- Bluetooth audio
- USB-C line-in capability
- WiFi 6 compatibility
- Quick Trueplay tuning using built-in microphones
- Updated touch controls
- Physical universal microphone switch
Humidity Resistant
Era 100 is designed to tolerate high-humidity environments such as a bathroom while a shower is running.
This can make it useful in rooms where a conventional electronic speaker might be less comfortable.
Humidity Resistant Does Not Mean Waterproof
Era 100 is not waterproof or water resistant. Do not expose it to rain, splashing water or direct contact with liquids, and do not position it where it could fall into a bath, sink or other source of water.
Not a Portable Speaker
Despite offering Bluetooth, Era 100 does not contain a rechargeable battery.
It requires mains power and is intended as a fixed room speaker rather than a portable outdoor product.
For portable Sonos listening, products such as Move 2 or Roam 2 are more appropriate.
Placement Matters
Trueplay can compensate for many room effects, but good physical positioning still provides the best starting point.
When Era 100 is positioned beside a wall or on a shelf, Sonos recommends leaving at least 25mm of space behind the speaker.
Avoid pushing the cabinet tightly into a corner unless that is the only practical option.
Surround Speaker Clearance
When Era 100 is being used as a rear surround, Sonos recommends approximately 203mm of clear space around each speaker.
Position the pair behind and to the left and right of the normal seating position wherever the room allows.
Dedicated Wall Mount
The Sonos Era 100 Wall Mount provides a purpose-designed way to lift the speaker away from furniture and position it at a suitable height.
The mount leaves room for the USB-C connection and compatible adapters while allowing the speaker to be angled towards the listening area.
Optional Sonos Stand
A purpose-built Sonos floor stand is also available where furniture or wall mounting is unsuitable.
This can be particularly useful when positioning a stereo pair or rear surround speakers at an appropriate listening height.
Black or White
Era 100 is available in Black or White with a matte finish.
Both versions use matching grilles and controls for a deliberately understated appearance.
Dimensions and Weight
- Height: 182.5mm
- Width: 120mm
- Depth: 130.5mm
- Weight: 2.02kg
Quad-Core Processor
The current Sonos UK specification lists a quad-core processor using four A55 cores running at 1.9GHz.
This provides the processing power needed for network operation, Trueplay, voice functions, stereo processing and the wider Sonos software platform.
17% Recycled Content
Sonos specifies Era 100 as containing 17% total recycled content under the SCS Recycled Content Standard.
The product also forms part of the company's newer design approach intended to reduce energy use and increase the use of recycled plastics.
Recyclable FSC-Certified Packaging
The packaging is designed to be recyclable and uses paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
This reduces dependence on conventional plastic packaging around the speaker.

Why Buy Sonos Era 100 From Audio T?
Era 100 can be as simple as a single wireless speaker on a kitchen counter, but it can also become part of a stereo pair, a turntable system, a multi-room installation or a complete Sonos home cinema setup. Which route makes most sense depends on the room and how you actually listen.
Audio T can demonstrate Era 100 on its own and as a stereo pair, show you how it compares with Era 300, help connect traditional sources such as turntables and CD players, and plan a complete Sonos surround or multi-room system if you want to expand later.
