The Sony VPL-XW7000ES takes the native 4K laser technology of the XW5000ES and turns virtually everything up a notch. Brightness rises dramatically to 3,200 lumens, the manual lens is replaced by Sony's sophisticated powered Advanced Crisp-Focused lens, lens shift becomes considerably broader and Picture Position Memory makes the projector genuinely practical for a CinemaScope installation.
At its heart are three native 3840 x 2160 SXRD panels. That means the imaging devices themselves contain the full Ultra HD 4K pixel structure rather than relying on rapid pixel shifting from a lower-resolution panel.
Sony's X1 Ultimate for Projector processor handles much of the heavy lifting, combining Object-based HDR Remaster, Dynamic HDR Enhancer, Object-based Super Resolution, Dual Database Processing, Digital Contrast Optimiser and Digital Focus Optimiser.
The laser-phosphor light source produces up to 3,200 lumens, making the XW7000ES considerably more comfortable than many traditional cinema projectors on very large screens or in rooms where absolute blackout conditions are not always practical.
Colour performance is equally ambitious. TRILUMINOS PRO works alongside Live Color Enhancer, while Sony quotes approximately 95% coverage of the cinema-standard DCI-P3 gamut and reproduction of more than one billion colours.
The optical system is a major step above the XW5000ES. The Advanced Crisp-Focused lens uses a 70mm aspherical front element, extra-low dispersion glass and a floating focus system. Focus, 2.1x zoom and lens shift are all powered, with an extremely generous ±85% vertical and ±36% horizontal range.
Five Picture Position memories can store focus, zoom and shift settings for different aspect ratios. That makes the XW7000ES particularly well suited to systems switching regularly between 16:9 television material and 2.35:1 or similar CinemaScope films.
Gaming is responsive by projector standards too. Sony quotes less than 21ms at 4K/60Hz and less than 13ms at Full HD 120Hz. It does not support 4K/120Hz or Variable Refresh Rate, so the priorities remain film, sport and immersive big-screen gaming rather than competitive high-refresh play.
Unlike the XW5000ES, 3D playback is also possible. An external compatible 3D sync transmitter and active glasses are required, connected through the dedicated 3D SYNC OUT socket.
