Audio T Verdict
The Sony VPL-XW5000ES marked an important change in Sony's home cinema projector range. It replaced the traditional lamp system of models such as the VW290ES and VW590ES with a long-life laser light source, while also introducing a new generation of smaller native 4K SXRD panels and Wide Dynamic Range Optics.
The result is a projector that is smaller, lighter, quieter and considerably less maintenance-intensive than the lamp models that came before it, while retaining one of Sony's biggest strengths: genuine native 4K imaging rather than a lower-resolution panel relying on pixel shifting.
Its three 0.61-inch SXRD panels each contain 3840 x 2160 pixels, giving the projector a native Ultra HD 4K imaging structure. Sony combines them with the flagship-level X1 Ultimate for Projector processor, bringing together Object-based HDR Remaster, Dynamic HDR Enhancer, Object-based Super Resolution, Dual Database Processing and Digital Focus Optimiser.
The laser-phosphor light source produces up to 2,000 lumens and is rated by Sony for up to approximately 20,000 hours of use without the routine lamp replacement associated with the older VW-series projectors.
Colour is another strong point. TRILUMINOS PRO is capable of reproducing more than a billion colours and Sony quotes approximately 95% coverage of the cinema-standard DCI-P3 colour space.
HDR10 and HLG are supported, while Dynamic HDR Enhancer works with the laser's output control to improve the presentation of HDR material. Sony also gives the projector an IMAX Enhanced picture mode for compatible content.
Gamers benefit too. The XW5000ES accepts 4K signals at up to 60Hz with less than 21ms quoted input lag, while Full HD 1080p can run at 120Hz with less than 13ms. It is not a 4K/120Hz or VRR projector, but this is a considerable improvement over Sony's earlier lamp models for responsive console gaming.
The compromise is the lens system. Focus, zoom and lens shift are all manual rather than motorised, and there is no Picture Position Memory. That makes the XW5000ES less convenient than the VW590ES for installations that regularly switch between 16:9 and CinemaScope screen formats.
If the system uses a conventional fixed 16:9 screen, however, that limitation is much less significant. Once correctly installed, the combination of native 4K SXRD, laser illumination, Sony's image processing and relatively compact 13kg chassis makes the XW5000ES a very strong dedicated home cinema projector.

Native 4K SXRD
The VPL-XW5000ES uses three native 4K SXRD imaging panels.
Each panel has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, matching the Ultra HD resolution used by modern 4K Blu-ray, streaming and gaming sources.
