Audio T Verdict
The Sony UBP-X700K is the logical step up from a conventional Blu-ray player when you want to get the best from a modern 4K television or projector and a collection of physical films.
Its headline feature is native 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray playback, giving compatible UHD discs their full 3840 x 2160 resolution rather than relying on a television to upscale conventional Full HD Blu-ray.
HDR10 and Dolby Vision are both supported, allowing the player to take advantage of the wider brightness range and colour information available from compatible discs and displays. Sony also supports BT.2020 colour and provides HDR-to-SDR conversion for customers using an older television that cannot display HDR directly.
Regular Blu-rays and DVDs have not been forgotten. Sony's 4K upscaling can output suitable lower-resolution material at up to 4K/60p, while 24p True Cinema helps preserve the native film cadence of compatible movie material.
Its music capabilities are unusually useful for a home cinema player too. The UBP-X700K plays conventional CDs and Super Audio CDs and carries Sony's High-Resolution Audio certification, with USB and network file compatibility including FLAC, ALAC, AIFF and DSD.
The dual HDMI arrangement is particularly useful in an upgraded system. HDMI OUT 1 carries video and audio to a modern television or AV amplifier, while HDMI OUT 2 can provide a separate audio-only feed. This allows customers with an older AV amplifier that cannot pass modern 4K HDR video to send the picture directly to the television while continuing to use the amplifier for multichannel sound.
There is one important difference between this current UBP-X700K and the older UBP-X700 that appears in many online reviews: Sony's current UK specification says the K model has no built-in Wi-Fi. Network functionality therefore requires the rear Ethernet connection.
There is also no Bluetooth, analogue audio output or optical digital connection, so this remains primarily a high-quality digital disc and media source rather than an all-purpose connectivity hub.
For a Sony BRAVIA 8 II, TA-AN1000 or any good 4K HDR home cinema, the UBP-X700K is a compact and versatile way of getting substantially more from a physical film collection without moving into a large specialist disc player.

Important: UBP-X700K Versus the Older UBP-X700
A large amount of online information relates to the earlier Sony UBP-X700.
Sony's current UK specification for the UBP-X700/K explicitly states that no wireless function is provided.
The older UBP-X700 specification included built-in Wi-Fi MIMO and stereoscopic 3D playback, so these features should not automatically be assumed to apply to the current UBP-X700K.
This Audio T page covers the current UBP-X700K.
Native 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Playback
4K Ultra HD Blu-ray is a separate physical disc format from conventional Blu-ray.
Compatible discs can carry video at 3840 x 2160 resolution, four times the pixel count of standard 1920 x 1080 Full HD Blu-ray.
Compared with conventional Blu-ray, UHD discs can also provide:
- HDR video
- Wider colour gamut
- Higher video bitrates
- Greater fine detail
- Improved colour gradation
The exact quality still depends on how the individual film has been mastered.
Why Physical 4K Discs Still Matter
Modern streaming services can provide excellent 4K HDR video, but they must balance picture quality against internet bandwidth and delivery costs.
A 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc can devote considerably more data to the picture and soundtrack without depending on your broadband speed once the disc is playing.
This can be particularly noticeable with:
- Fine textures
- Film grain
- Fast movement
- Dark scenes
- Smoke and mist
- Water
- Complex backgrounds
- Lossless multichannel soundtracks
HDR10
HDR10 is the standard HDR format found on the overwhelming majority of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases.
High Dynamic Range allows compatible material to describe a substantially wider range between the darkest and brightest parts of the picture than conventional SDR video.
A compatible HDR television or projector is required to reproduce that expanded range.
Dolby Vision
The UBP-X700K also supports Dolby Vision.
Dolby Vision can use dynamic metadata so that HDR presentation can be adjusted through different scenes rather than relying entirely on one set of HDR information for the complete film.
To obtain Dolby Vision, you need:
- Dolby Vision compatible content
- A Dolby Vision compatible television or projector
- A compatible HDMI signal path
- Correct player and display settings
If an AV amplifier or soundbar sits between the player and television, that product must also be able to pass Dolby Vision correctly.
BT.2020 Wide Colour
The player supports the BT.2020 colour space used by Ultra HD video standards.
This provides a much larger potential colour gamut than the Rec.709 colour space associated with conventional HD television and Blu-ray.
The actual colours reproduced depend on both the content and the capabilities of the connected display.
HDR-to-SDR Conversion
The UBP-X700K can also be used with a non-HDR television.
Sony's HDR-to-SDR conversion maps the broader brightness range of HDR material into a form suitable for a conventional SDR display.
This allows 4K UHD discs to remain usable on an older television, although you will not receive the full HDR experience available from an HDR-capable display.
4K Upscaling
Not every disc needs to be a 4K UHD disc.
The UBP-X700K can upscale suitable lower-resolution material for output at up to 4K/60p.
This is particularly useful for:
- 1080p Blu-ray
- DVD
- Compatible USB video
- Network media
Upscaling Is Not Native 4K
Upscaling can make conventional Blu-ray and DVD material fit a 4K display more cleanly, but it cannot recreate picture detail that was never present in the original source.
A native 4K UHD master remains the better source where one is available.
24p True Cinema
Many films are photographed at approximately 24 frames per second.
24p True Cinema allows compatible film material to retain that native cadence when used with a suitably configured television or projector.
This avoids unnecessary frame-rate conversion before the image reaches the display.
Deep Colour
Sony specifies Deep Colour processing up to 12-bit.
Higher colour depth can allow smoother gradations where the source and connected display also support the appropriate signal format.
Conventional Blu-ray Playback
The UBP-X700K remains fully useful for an existing Full HD Blu-ray collection.
There is no need to replace conventional Blu-ray discs simply because the player supports 4K UHD.
A normal Blu-ray can be played and upscaled for output to a 4K television.
DVD Playback
Supported DVD formats include:
- DVD-Video
- DVD-R
- DVD-RW
- DVD-R Dual Layer
- DVD+R
- DVD+RW
- DVD+R Double Layer
Recordable-disc compatibility can depend on the way the disc was authored and finalised.
Audio CD Playback
The UBP-X700K also plays conventional compact discs.
Supported optical music discs include:
Digital audio can be sent through HDMI or the coaxial digital output.
Super Audio CD Playback
SACD playback makes the UBP-X700K considerably more useful to music collectors than many basic video players.
Compatible Super Audio CD and hybrid SACD/CD releases can be played through the unit.
For multichannel and high-resolution SACD playback, HDMI is normally the most versatile connection to a compatible AV amplifier.
High-Resolution Audio Certified
Sony classifies the UBP-X700K as a High-Resolution Audio product.
Compatible file formats include:
- FLAC
- ALAC
- AIFF
- DSD
- LPCM
- AAC
- WMA
- Vorbis
This makes the player useful for locally stored music as well as physical discs.
DSD Playback
DSD files in DSF and DSDIFF formats are supported from compatible media.
The final output behaviour depends on the receiving equipment and the player's digital-audio settings.
Dolby Atmos
The UBP-X700K can bitstream Dolby Atmos audio to a compatible AV amplifier or soundbar.
The player itself does not contain surround-sound power amplification; it sends the encoded audio to the external audio system for decoding and playback.
Dolby TrueHD
Dolby TrueHD decoding up to 7.1 channels is supported.
Dolby TrueHD is a lossless format commonly used as the underlying soundtrack for Dolby Atmos on Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.
DTS:X
DTS:X can likewise be output as a bitstream to a compatible home cinema amplifier.
Sony also specifies DTS decoding up to 7.1 channels.
Dual HDMI Outputs
Two rear HDMI sockets make the UBP-X700K unusually flexible when integrating it into an existing home cinema.
The connections perform different jobs:
- HDMI OUT 1: primary video and audio output
- HDMI OUT 2: audio-only HDMI output
Why Have a Separate Audio-Only HDMI Output?
An older AV amplifier may decode Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD and other modern audio formats perfectly well but be unable to pass 4K HDR or Dolby Vision video.
The UBP-X700K allows you to connect:
- HDMI OUT 1 directly to the 4K television or projector for picture
- HDMI OUT 2 to the older AV amplifier for sound
This can extend the useful life of existing home cinema electronics without compromising the video path.
HDMI OUT 2 Is Audio Only
Do not connect HDMI OUT 2 to a television expecting to receive a picture.
Use HDMI OUT 1 for video.
Single-HDMI AV Amplifier Connection
If your AV amplifier supports the required 4K, HDR10 and Dolby Vision formats, the simplest connection is:
- UBP-X700K HDMI OUT 1 to AV amplifier
- AV amplifier HDMI output to television or projector
This allows one HDMI connection to carry both picture and multichannel sound.
Direct-to-TV Connection
The player can also connect directly to a television through HDMI OUT 1.
This is suitable where:
- The TV speakers are being used
- A soundbar receives audio from the TV through eARC or ARC
- The AV amplifier is being fed separately from HDMI OUT 2
Coaxial Digital Audio Output
A rear RCA coaxial S/PDIF output allows conventional digital audio to be sent to a compatible DAC, stereo amplifier or older AV receiver.
This can be particularly useful for CD playback in a Hi-Fi system.
Coaxial Is Not an Analogue RCA Output
The single rear RCA socket carries digital audio.
It should not be connected to a conventional analogue AUX or CD input.
No Analogue Audio Output
The UBP-X700K does not include stereo analogue RCA outputs.
An analogue-only amplifier therefore requires an external DAC connected to the player's coaxial digital output.
No Optical Digital Output
There is no Toslink optical digital output.
Digital audio connections are:
- HDMI OUT 1
- HDMI OUT 2
- Coaxial S/PDIF
Front USB Media Playback
A front USB connection provides access to compatible locally stored music, video and photographs.
Audio formats include:
- AAC
- WMA
- LPCM
- DSD
- FLAC
- AIFF
- ALAC
- Dolby Digital files
- Vorbis
Video File Playback
The current UBP-X700K specification supports common video formats including variants of:
- MPEG-1
- MPEG-2
- MPEG-4 AVC / H.264
- AVCHD
- VC-1
- WMV9
- Motion JPEG
Containers include formats such as MKV, MP4, M2TS, MTS and MOV where the underlying codec is compatible.
File extension alone does not guarantee playback because encoding profile, bitrate and other parameters can vary.
Photo Playback
Supported image formats include:
External USB Hard Drives
The UBP-X700K can read compatible external USB storage, but the drive format matters.
Sony specifies:
- FAT32 supported
- NTFS supported
- exFAT not supported
- MBR partitioning supported
- GPT partitioning not supported
- Only the first partition is recognised
Do Not Reformat a Drive Without Backing It Up
If the player does not recognise an exFAT or GPT-formatted drive, reformatting may solve the compatibility problem.
Formatting permanently removes the existing data, so always back up important files first.
Wired Ethernet
A rear Ethernet connection provides network access.
It can be used for compatible internet and network-media functions.
For a fixed home cinema system, a wired connection also has practical advantages:
- Stable connection
- No dependence on Wi-Fi signal strength
- No wireless password entry on the player
- Predictable network performance
No Built-In Wi-Fi on the Current UBP-X700K
Sony's dedicated UK specification for the UBP-X700/K explicitly states that there is no wireless function.
This differs from the older UBP-X700, which included Wi-Fi.
Network access on the current X700K therefore requires the Ethernet connection.
DMP and DMR Network Playback
Sony lists both Digital Media Player and Digital Media Renderer functionality.
This allows compatible media stored elsewhere on a home network to be accessed through appropriate DLNA-style network systems.
Compatibility depends on the media server, file format and network configuration.
Online Streaming Services
Sony's support material for the UBP-X700K continues to reference compatible online video services.
However, applications and streaming platforms are third-party services and can change independently of the hardware.
We therefore recommend checking current support before purchasing the player specifically for one particular streaming application.
Use the Player Primarily for Disc Playback
Most modern televisions and dedicated streaming boxes offer broader and more frequently updated smart-TV platforms.
The strongest reason to choose the UBP-X700K is its physical-disc, high-resolution audio and local-media capability rather than treating it as your main streaming platform.
No Bluetooth
Bluetooth is not provided.
The UBP-X700K therefore cannot directly send audio to Bluetooth headphones or speakers.
Where wireless headphone listening is required, use the Bluetooth functionality of the connected television or AV amplifier if available.
BRAVIA Sync
BRAVIA Sync uses HDMI-CEC to provide compatible control between Sony products.
Depending on the connected system, this can simplify operations such as:
- Power
- Input switching
- Playback
- System control
Child Lock and Parental Control
Child Lock and Parental Control functions are included for family installations.
Disc restrictions still depend on the rating and control information encoded within the media.
Automatic Standby
The player can enter its low-power mode automatically following a period of inactivity.
Sony specifies activation after approximately 20 minutes.
Power Consumption
Sony specifies approximately:
- 15W during operation
- 0.4W in standard standby
Networked standby consumption can vary according to the connections and settings being used.
Compact 320mm-Wide Chassis
Despite its 4K UHD and high-resolution audio capability, the UBP-X700K is considerably smaller than a conventional full-width AV component.
Dimensions are approximately:
- 320mm wide
- 45mm high
- 217mm deep
Weight is approximately 1.4kg.
Allow Additional Rear Clearance
The published 217mm depth does not include the space needed for cables.
Allow additional clearance for:
- HDMI plugs
- Ethernet cable
- Coaxial digital cable
- Power connection
UBP-X700K or BDP-S1700K?
Choose the BDP-S1700K When
- You only own conventional Blu-rays and DVDs
- Full HD 1080p is sufficient
- You do not need HDR
- You do not own 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs
- You want the simpler lower-cost player
- SACD and CD playback are still useful
Choose the UBP-X700K When
- You own 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs
- You have a 4K HDR television or projector
- HDR10 matters
- Dolby Vision matters
- 4K upscaling is useful
- High-Resolution Audio certification is important
- Dual HDMI outputs would help your system
The Sony BDP-S1700K is the more straightforward Full HD alternative for customers who do not require 4K UHD disc playback.
UBP-X700K and BRAVIA 8 II
The UBP-X700K makes a natural physical-media source for Sony's current QD-OLED televisions.
Both the Sony BRAVIA 8 II 55-inch and Sony BRAVIA 8 II 65-inch support HDR10 and Dolby Vision.
A direct HDMI connection therefore provides a simple route from compatible UHD discs to the QD-OLED display.
UBP-X700K and TA-AN1000
The Sony TA-AN1000 AV Amplifier is an excellent partner for a complete Sony home cinema.
A typical connection is:
- UBP-X700K HDMI OUT 1 to TA-AN1000
- TA-AN1000 HDMI output to BRAVIA TV
- TA-AN1000 decodes and amplifies the multichannel soundtrack
Because 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray films typically operate at up to 4K/60Hz rather than 4K/120Hz gaming rates, the player does not need to occupy one of the TA-AN1000's two dedicated 4K/120Hz GAME or MEDIA BOX inputs.
Using an Older AV Amplifier
The dual HDMI outputs are especially helpful where the television has been upgraded before the AV amplifier.
If the older amplifier cannot pass 4K HDR or Dolby Vision:
- Send HDMI OUT 1 directly to the television
- Send HDMI OUT 2 to the AV amplifier for audio
This can allow older but otherwise capable surround electronics to remain in use.
Using the UBP-X700K in a Stereo System
The player's CD, SACD and high-resolution file capability means it can also serve as a source in a stereo system.
Where the amplifier or DAC has coaxial digital input, the Sony can feed it directly.
There is no analogue audio output, so an external DAC is required for analogue-only amplifiers.
Can It Replace a Dedicated CD Player?
Functionally, the UBP-X700K can play conventional CDs and SACDs.
Whether it replaces a specialist Hi-Fi player depends on your priorities.
A dedicated CD or SACD component may offer:
- More substantial mechanical construction
- Dedicated front-panel controls
- Analogue outputs
- A larger display
- Specialist audio circuitry
The Sony's strength is its enormous versatility across film and music formats.
Who Is the UBP-X700K For?
