Audio T Verdict
The Dynaudio Confidence 50 is a substantial three-way floorstanding loudspeaker positioned immediately below the flagship Confidence 60. It combines much of the range-topping model’s driver technology and full DDC 2 directivity-control system with twin 18cm woofers in place of the Confidence 60’s larger 23cm bass drivers.
Each speaker uses a symmetrical driver layout comprising two 18cm NeoTec MSP woofers, two dedicated 15cm MSP midrange drivers and one 28mm Esotar3 soft-dome tweeter. The midrange units sit above and below the tweeter, allowing the DDC Lens, crossover, Compex baffle and driver arrangement to work together as one carefully controlled acoustic system.
Dynaudio Directivity Control is designed to reduce the amount of midrange and high-frequency energy directed towards the floor and ceiling. This can lessen the effect of early vertical reflections while retaining wider horizontal dispersion than the previous-generation Confidence system.
The technology does not make the room or positioning irrelevant. The Confidence 50’s deep bass, physical scale and revealing character mean that wall clearance, speaker spacing, toe-in, listening distance and the position of the listening seat remain extremely important.
The Esotar3 tweeter incorporates Dynaudio’s Hexis resonance-control inner dome, an enlarged rear chamber, carefully controlled airflow and a powerful neodymium magnet system. It is mounted within the precision-formed aluminium DDC Lens rather than operating as an isolated tweeter on a conventional flat baffle.
The two 15cm midrange drivers use Dynaudio’s Horizon Surround. This follows the shape of the MSP cone to its outer edge, increasing the effective radiating area and allowing the diaphragm to sit almost flush with the surrounding Compex baffle.
Twin 18cm NeoTec MSP woofers provide the low-frequency foundation. Their one-piece MSP diaphragms, copper voice coils, glass-fibre formers, pure-neodymium motors and machined ventilation systems are optimised specifically for bass reproduction.
The model-specific hybrid bass port fires down through the plinth and towards a shaped silicon diffuser above a solid steel base plate. This gives the port a consistent immediate boundary and clearance on different floor surfaces, although the wider room will continue to influence the audible bass response.
Dynaudio specifies extension down to 35Hz within a +/-3dB tolerance. That gives the Confidence 50 genuine low-frequency authority without making a subwoofer essential for most two-channel music systems.
The electrical load deserves careful attention. Sensitivity is 87dB, nominal impedance is 4 ohms and the impedance falls to 2.7 ohms at 79Hz. The partnering amplifier must therefore combine suitable power with strong current delivery and stability into loads below 3 ohms.
Dynaudio quotes IEC long-term power handling of 400W. This does not mean that a 400W amplifier is compulsory, nor does it guarantee safety with any amplifier carrying that rating. A smaller amplifier driven into clipping can be more dangerous than a powerful amplifier used sensibly.
The Confidence 50 is sufficiently transparent to reveal meaningful differences between amplifiers, source components, cables and setup. It deserves to be demonstrated as part of a complete system rather than being selected from specification figures alone.
It is also a physically imposing loudspeaker. Each speaker weighs 49.6kg and measures approximately 1.56 metres tall once its feet and grille are included. Delivery, unpacking, positioning and levelling should normally be handled by two people.
Compared with the Confidence 30, the Confidence 50 adds a second dedicated midrange driver, lowers the bass-to-midrange crossover from 290Hz to 200Hz and extends the published bass response from 38Hz to 35Hz. The larger Confidence 60 moves to twin 23cm woofers and reaches a quoted 29Hz.
For a medium-to-large listening room and an appropriately ambitious system, the Confidence 50 offers an exceptional balance of scale, bass authority, precise imaging and low-level resolution. It brings the full symmetrical DDC driver layout into a cabinet that is more manageable than the flagship Confidence 60, while still providing a genuinely commanding musical presentation.

The most precise stereo image will still normally be heard around the primary listening position, and careful speaker spacing and toe-in remain important.
What DDC Does Not Correct
DDC cannot remove every influence of the room.
The Confidence 50 will still respond to:

28mm Esotar3 Soft-Dome Tweeter
High frequencies are reproduced by Dynaudio’s 28mm Esotar3 coated soft-dome tweeter.

Twin 18cm NeoTec MSP Woofers

The twin-driver arrangement provides greater cone area, output capability and low-frequency authority than a single-woofer design.

Pure-Neodymium Woofer Motors
Each woofer uses a powerful pure-neodymium magnet system.
The motor geometry is shaped to control the magnetic field around the voice coil and maintain consistent force as the diaphragm moves.
The compact magnets also leave more space for ventilation around the rear of the cone and voice-coil assembly.
Machined Airflow and Ventilation
Airflow channels are machined directly into the woofer motor structures.
These allow air to move away from the voice coil and rear of the diaphragm during larger excursions.

The two midrange drivers hand over to the Esotar3 tweeter at 2860Hz.

Compex Composite Front Baffle
All five drivers are mounted into a sculpted Compex composite front baffle.
Compex combines low mass with high rigidity and mechanical damping. It can also be formed into the precise curves and mounting surfaces demanded by the DDC system.

Dynaudio specifies a lower cutoff of 35Hz within a +/-3dB tolerance.
This allows the Confidence 50 to reproduce deep bass from drums, bass guitars, orchestral instruments and electronic music without automatically requiring a subwoofer.

Using the Confidence 50 Without a Subwoofer
For most two-channel music systems, the Confidence 50 can operate as a full-range main loudspeaker without a separate subwoofer.

4-Ohm Rated Impedance
Dynaudio specifies a rated impedance of 4 ohms.

2.7-Ohm Minimum at 79Hz
The impedance falls to a specified minimum of 2.7 ohms at 79Hz.

An appropriate amplifier must combine clean voltage output with strong current delivery and stability into loads below 3 ohms.
Amplifier Stability Is Essential
Do not select an amplifier for the Confidence 50 solely from its quoted 8-ohm wattage.
Check its behaviour into 4 ohms, its current capability and its suitability for loudspeaker loads that fall below 3 ohms.
A demonstration with the intended amplifier, room and listening levels is strongly recommended.
400W IEC Long-Term Power Handling
Dynaudio specifies IEC long-term power handling of 400W.
This figure provides guidance about the speaker’s ability to cope with sustained signals under the relevant measurement standard.
It does not mean:
- A 400W amplifier is compulsory
- Every amplifier below 400W is suitable
- The speaker cannot be damaged by a 400W amplifier
- The volume can be increased without regard for distortion
Dynaudio’s general guidance suggests approximately 20% of the loudspeaker’s power rating per channel as a rough minimum amplifier starting point. This is not a substitute for checking current delivery, impedance stability, room size and required listening level.
Reduce the Volume if the Sound Becomes Distorted
Audible hardness, compression, crackling or obvious distortion can indicate that the amplifier or loudspeakers are being overloaded.
Reduce the volume immediately rather than continuing at the same level.
A lower-powered amplifier driven into clipping can damage a tweeter even when its published wattage appears safe.
Amplifier Matching
The Confidence 50 should be partnered with amplification capable of remaining controlled as its impedance falls to 2.7 ohms.

Single-Wire Loudspeaker Connections
The Confidence 50 uses one pair of binding posts per speaker.
It is designed for conventional single wiring rather than passive bi-wiring or bi-amping.
This allows the cable budget to concentrate on one high-quality connection between each amplifier channel and speaker.
Compatible Cable Terminations
The terminals can accommodate compatible:
- 4mm banana plugs

- Properly prepared bare wire
The amplifier should be switched off while speaker cables are connected or removed.
Bare-wire strands must be kept clear of the opposite terminal to prevent a short circuit.
Correct Speaker Polarity
Connect the positive amplifier terminal to the positive speaker terminal and the negative amplifier terminal to the negative speaker terminal.
If one speaker is connected with reversed polarity, the system can lose bass weight, central focus and image stability even though both speakers continue to produce sound.

Black Removable Grilles
Black removable grilles are supplied.
They help protect the Esotar3 dome, two midrange cones and twin woofers from accidental contact, dust and curious fingers.
Dynaudio designs its grilles to have a limited influence on performance, although the company suggests that removing them may provide a marginal improvement for serious listening.
Never press on any of the driver diaphragms while removing or replacing the grilles.
Integrated Floor Support
The Confidence 50’s broad lower base provides stability and forms part of the hybrid bass-port system.
The complete width increases from 218mm at the cabinet to 364mm once the feet and grille are included.
This wider footprint should be considered when planning the speaker position, floor space and safe walking routes around the system.
Carpet Spikes and Hard-Floor Support
Dynaudio floorstanding speakers provide floor-contact options for carpeted and uncovered hard floors.
Spikes are intended to pass through carpet or rugs and reach the firm surface beneath.
Rubber feet are intended for uncovered wood, tile or similar hard surfaces.
Spikes can cause injury or damage sensitive flooring. Protective discs should be used where appropriate.
Levelling the Speakers
Adjust the feet so that each Confidence 50 stands vertically and does not rock.
Both speakers should be at the same height and should remain stable when touched gently.
Never tilt the speaker so that its complete weight rests on only one or two spikes or feet.
Two-Person Installation Required
Each Confidence 50 weighs 49.6kg before packaging.
Unpacking, lifting, fitting the floor hardware and moving the speaker into its final position should normally be completed by two people.
Plan the delivery route and check doorway, stairway, corner and floor clearances before unpacking.
Speaker Positioning
Dynaudio recommends beginning with its passive loudspeakers positioned as far from nearby walls as practical.
Approximately 50cm from each cabinet to nearby boundaries is a useful starting point, although the optimum position will depend on the room.
Moving the Confidence 50 closer to a wall will normally increase perceived bass energy. Moving it further into the room can improve bass definition and soundstage depth.
DDC Does Not Remove Bass Modes
The DDC system primarily controls vertical radiation through the midrange and treble.
Low-frequency sound remains much less directional and will continue to interact with:
- The rear wall
- The side walls
- The floor
- The room corners
- The listening-seat position
- The room’s length, width and height
Careful bass assessment remains important despite the controlled port boundary.
Stereo Speaker Spacing
Dynaudio’s general guidance suggests beginning with the speakers approximately two to four metres apart.
The listening distance should normally be similar to, or slightly greater than, the distance between the speakers.
If the pair is positioned too closely, the soundstage may lack scale. If it is too far apart, voices and instruments in the centre can lose focus.
Toe-In and Listening Angle
There is no single toe-in angle that will suit every Confidence 50 installation.
Begin with the speakers facing forwards or angled slightly towards the listening position, then alter both by the same amount.
