The Audio-Technica VM540ML has earned its reputation for a fairly simple reason: it combines one of Audio-Technicas excellent Microlinear styli with a proven dual moving magnet generator at a price that makes sophisticated groove tracing surprisingly attainable.

The business end is a nude 2.2 x 0.12mil Microlinear diamond attached to a tapered aluminium-pipe cantilever. Its extremely narrow tracing radius is designed to follow fine groove modulation accurately, particularly towards the inner circumference of a record where tracing becomes increasingly demanding.

Microlinear geometry also maintains its contact shape particularly well as it wears. Audio-Technica gives approximately 1,000 hours as a general replacement-stylus life guide, although actual life will always depend on record cleanliness, alignment, tracking force and handling.

Behind the stylus is Audio-Technicas original VM Series dual magnet generator. Two magnets correspond with the left and right walls of the stereo groove, while para-toroidal coils, 6N-OFC conductor and a Permalloy centre shielding plate help maintain channel separation and generator efficiency.

Output is a healthy 4.0mV, making the VM540ML suitable for conventional 47k-ohm moving-magnet phono stages. Audio-Technica recommends total load capacitance of 100–200pF, so cable and phono-stage capacitance are worth considering where your equipment provides adjustment.

The VM540ML is also refreshingly serviceable. The original VMN40ML stylus simply pulls away from the cartridge body when replacement is required, while Audio-Technicas newer AT-VMN40xML is officially compatible with the VM540ML too.

In fact, compatibility extends considerably further. The original VM and newer VMx cartridges share their basic removable-stylus body architecture, allowing a broad range of stereo stylus profiles to be tried without replacing the cartridge body.

There is one practical difference compared with the newer VMx range: the VM540ML does not have threaded mounting inserts. Installation uses conventional cartridge screws, washers and nuts, so it is a little more fiddly to fit. Once installed and correctly aligned, however, the Microlinear stylus makes the effort worthwhile.

Audio-Technica VM540ML Microlinear Moving Magnet Cartridge

The Audio-Technica VM540ML is a dual moving magnet stereo cartridge fitted with a nude Microlinear stylus and tapered aluminium cantilever.

It belongs to Audio-Technicas previous-generation VM500 Series and should not be confused with the newer VMx cartridges. Although the two generations share stylus compatibility, their generator specifications, body construction and mounting systems are different.

Nude Microlinear Stylus

The VM540ML uses a:

Microlinear is an advanced fine-line stylus profile designed to follow extremely small modulation within a record groove.

Its narrow tracing radius allows it to track information that is increasingly difficult for a conventional conical or elliptical stylus to follow accurately.

Inner-Groove Performance

The inner tracks of a record are particularly difficult for a stylus to reproduce.

As the stylus moves towards the centre of the record, each revolution covers progressively less physical distance while still carrying the musical information recorded during that period of time.

The resulting groove modulation becomes more tightly packed, making a narrow tracing radius increasingly valuable.

Audio-Technica specifically highlights reduced distortion on the inner circumference of the record as one of the advantages of the VM540MLs Microlinear stylus.

Inner Tracks Sounding Harsh?

If clean records repeatedly become more congested, sibilant or distorted towards the end of a side, cartridge alignment and stylus geometry are both worth investigating.

A correctly aligned Microlinear cartridge can provide a considerable improvement in inner-groove tracing.

What Does Nude Mean?

A nude stylus uses the diamond itself as both the groove-contact tip and supporting shank.
