The Audio-Technica AT-VM740xML combines one of our favourite stylus profiles with the more substantial aluminium-bodied version of Audio-Technica's current VMx moving-magnet platform.

Its nude 2.2 x 0.12mil Microlinear stylus uses an extremely narrow tracing radius to follow fine modulation within the record groove, particularly towards the inner tracks where a simpler conical or elliptical stylus has an increasingly difficult job.

Audio-Technica mounts that diamond to a tapered aluminium-pipe cantilever, reducing material and moving mass towards the stylus tip while retaining the rigidity needed to transfer groove movement into the cartridge generator.

The generator itself is thoroughly modernised compared with the previous VM Series. Para-toroidal construction uses two PCUHD copper coils per channel, while slightly fewer coil turns improve transient response and a central shield plate helps reduce crosstalk between the left and right channels.

The AT-VM740xML also introduces a die-cast aluminium cartridge housing. Compared with the polymer-bodied VMx 500 Series, the metal body is designed to provide a more rigid, resonance-controlled platform for the generator.

Output is 3.2mV, so despite the fairly sophisticated stylus this remains an easy-to-accommodate moving-magnet cartridge designed for a conventional 47k-ohm MM phono input. Audio-Technica recommends total load capacitance of 150–250pF.
