Audio T Verdict
The Cyrus Classic AMP is a compact but comprehensively equipped integrated amplifier, combining the speed and musical involvement associated with Cyrus with enough connectivity to manage a varied modern Hi-Fi system.
Its 91W-per-channel output is supported by a substantial 304VA power supply, while four line inputs, an MM phono stage, four digital inputs, a QXR DAC and headphone amplification cover most everyday sources without adding several extra boxes.
The optional Cyrus Classic PSX-R2 provides a clear upgrade route, and the variable preamplifier output allows a separate power amplifier to be added later. It is a strong choice for customers who want the traditional Cyrus half-width format with integrated amplification and source control.
Cyrus Classic AMP Integrated Amplifier
The Cyrus Classic AMP is a compact integrated stereo amplifier with analogue and digital source selection, volume control, an MM phono stage, QXR digital-to-analogue conversion and a built-in headphone amplifier.
It delivers 112W per channel into 4O, 91W into 6O and 70W into 8O, with both channels driven.
Four analogue line inputs, two coaxial and two optical digital inputs allow it to manage CD players, streamers, DACs and other sources, while the dedicated phono connection accommodates a turntable fitted with a moving magnet cartridge.
Analogue Sources
- Four stereo RCA line inputs
- Dedicated moving magnet phono input
- Turntable grounding connection
- Variable preamplifier output
- Fixed-level recording output
Digital Sources
- Two coaxial digital inputs
- Two optical digital inputs
- QXR digital-to-analogue converter
- PCM stereo playback up to 192kHz
- Suitable for CD transports and streamers
Wideband Integrated Amplification
The Classic AMP combines a dedicated analogue preamplifier with a stereo power-amplifier stage inside one compact chassis.
Its wideband amplifier circuit extends from below 0.5Hz to beyond 50kHz at the minus 3dB points, helping keep unwanted phase changes outside the audible frequency range.
Power output is rated with both channels driven, providing 112W per channel into 4O, 91W into 6O and 70W into 8O.
Loudspeaker sensitivity, minimum impedance, room size and listening level should still be considered when choosing a suitable match.
304VA Toroidal Power Supply
The internal power supply uses a 304VA toroidal transformer feeding a high-capacity power reserve.
The preamplifier supply is electrically separated from the power-amplifier section and driven from its own transformer winding.
Digital control circuitry is powered from a further isolated mains supply, helping prevent control and display activity from interfering with the analogue signal path.
Four Analogue Line Inputs
Four stereo RCA line inputs provide connections for conventional analogue sources such as CD players, streamers, tuners, cassette decks, external DACs and separate phono stages.
Input selection is handled by relays within the analogue preamplifier, while a precision gain-control system manages listening volume.
Sources with conventional line-level outputs should not be connected to the dedicated phono input.
Moving Magnet Phono Stage
The dedicated phono input allows a turntable fitted with a moving magnet cartridge to connect directly to the amplifier.
Its circuit uses two active gain stages with passive RIAA equalisation between them. The input presents the conventional 47kO impedance expected by most moving magnet cartridges.
Low-output moving coil cartridges require a suitable external MC phono stage or step-up arrangement connected to one of the standard line inputs.
A grounding terminal is provided for turntables or tonearms fitted with a separate earth lead.
QXR Digital-to-Analogue Converter
The Classic AMP incorporates Cyrus QXR digital conversion for its coaxial and optical inputs.
Digital playback supports two-channel PCM at sample rates from 32kHz to 192kHz. The amplifier does not decode multichannel surround formats.
A television or other video source connected optically should therefore be configured to output stereo PCM.
Two Coaxial and Two Optical Inputs
Two coaxial RCA and two optical TOSLink inputs accommodate sources such as CD transports, network streamers, televisions and compatible media players.
The digital connections are inputs only. The Classic AMP does not provide a digital output, USB audio connection, HDMI eARC or built-in network streaming.
Streaming can be added with a separate source such as the
Cyrus Classic STREAM
.
Variable Preamplifier Output
The stereo preamplifier output follows the Classic AMPs volume control and can feed a compatible external power amplifier or active subwoofer.
The
Cyrus Classic POWER
provides the natural matching upgrade when additional power or a bi-amplified system is required.
Bi-amplification requires suitable loudspeakers with separate bass and treble terminals. Their metal linking plates must be removed before different amplifiers are connected.
Fixed-Level Recording Output
A separate fixed output provides a constant line-level signal that is unaffected by the main volume control.
It can be used with compatible recording equipment or another product that specifically requires a fixed analogue output.
It should not be connected directly to a power amplifier because it provides no volume control.
Headphone Amplifier
A 3.5mm headphone socket allows private listening without adding a separate headphone amplifier.
Cyrus recommends headphones with an impedance between 16O and 330O.
Connecting headphones allows the amplifier to provide a convenient personal-listening option while retaining the same analogue and digital source selection.
Optional Cyrus Classic PSX-R2 Upgrade
The
Cyrus Classic PSX-R2
connects through the dedicated five-pin PSX-R upgrade socket.
Power from the external supply is routed to the analogue preamplifier and the post-DAC analogue stages, providing those sections with a separate regulated supply.
The Classic AMPs internal power supply continues to operate the remaining circuitry, so both products must stay connected to mains power.
MC-BUS System Control
MC-BUS input and output sockets allow standby commands to be shared with other compatible Cyrus components.
This allows a connected Cyrus streamer, CD player or power amplifier to switch between operation and standby as part of one coordinated system.
Compact Cyrus Casework
The Classic AMP uses Cyruss familiar 215mm-wide die-cast chassis.
Its half-width construction allows two compatible Cyrus components to sit side by side on many conventional equipment shelves.
Position the amplifier on a rigid, level surface with adequate ventilation and avoid placing another component directly on top of it.
