Eversolo DMP-A6 Gen 2 Music Streamer, DAC and Pre-Amplifier

Eversolo DMP-A6 Gen 2 Music Streamer, DAC and Pre-Amplifier

Audio T Verdict

The Eversolo DMP-A6 Gen 2 is an unusually complete digital source, bringing a network streamer, high-resolution DAC, digital pre-amplifier, local music server and extensive digital connectivity together in one compact aluminium component.

Its dual ESS ES9038Q2M DACs, fully balanced audio architecture, low-noise linear power supply and variable XLR and RCA outputs make it suitable for use with an existing integrated amplifier, power amplifier or pair of active loudspeakers.

The large 6-inch touchscreen and Eversolo Control app make browsing streaming services and large music libraries considerably more intuitive than on many conventional Hi-Fi streamers, while the internal M.2 NVMe slot provides a clean route to storing a substantial local collection.

HDMI ARC, room correction, digital inputs and extensive digital outputs give the Gen 2 considerable system flexibility. It does not contain a power amplifier, headphone socket, phono stage or conventional analogue input, but as a digital source and control centre it offers an exceptional amount of functionality for the price.

Eversolo DMP-A6 Gen 2 Music Streamer, DAC and Pre-Amplifier

The Eversolo DMP-A6 Gen 2 is designed to sit at the centre of a modern digital Hi-Fi system.

It can stream music from online services, play files from network and cloud storage, hold a locally installed SSD music library, receive audio from a computer or television and convert digital sources through its dual internal DACs.

Balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs allow it to feed an integrated amplifier, pre-amplifier, power amplifier or active loudspeaker system. Digital outputs also allow it to operate as a dedicated streaming transport with a compatible external DAC.

An Amplifier or Active Loudspeaker Is Required

The DMP-A6 Gen 2 does not contain a speaker-level power amplifier and cannot drive passive loudspeakers directly.

Connect it to an integrated amplifier, pre-amplifier and power amplifier combination, suitable power amplifier or active loudspeakers.

What Changed for the Gen 2?

The second-generation DMP-A6 retains the compact proportions and touchscreen interface of the original model while making several practical improvements.

A redesigned low-noise linear power supply replaces the earlier switching supply arrangement, while HDMI ARC allows compatible television sound to pass through the Eversolo's DAC and volume-control system.

A 12V trigger output can control compatible downstream equipment, and Wake-on-LAN allows the player to be activated through the network when the required settings and network equipment are in place.

Current software also adds features including room correction, Qobuz Connect and expanded playback and control options.

Full Aluminium Construction

The cabinet is machined from aluminium and designed to provide a rigid, well-shielded enclosure for the digital, analogue and power-supply sections.

Its 270mm width is narrower than a conventional full-width Hi-Fi component, making it easier to accommodate on a desk, compact equipment rack or shelf.

The front panel is dominated by the touchscreen, with a multifunction volume and control knob positioned alongside it for direct adjustment.

Six-Inch Colour Touchscreen

The 6-inch LCD touchscreen provides direct access to music libraries, streaming services, inputs, outputs, playlists and system settings.

Album artwork, track information, file format and sample rate can be displayed during playback, with a selection of playback screens and digital VU meter designs available.

The screen reduces reliance on a phone or tablet and makes the DMP-A6 Gen 2 practical as a self-contained music player when it is positioned within easy reach.

Dual ESS ES9038Q2M DACs

Two ESS Sabre ES9038Q2M digital-to-analogue converters are used, with separate DAC processing for the left and right channels.

The dual-DAC arrangement is partnered with OPA1642 operational amplifiers and a fully balanced circuit design from conversion through to the XLR outputs.

Compatible stereo audio can be decoded at up to 32-bit/768kHz PCM and native DSD512 through supported input and playback routes.

Maximum Resolution Depends on the Connection

The headline 32-bit/768kHz and DSD512 figures apply to compatible local playback, USB audio and supported digital routes.

Optical, coaxial and HDMI ARC connections have lower maximum rates, and streaming-service quality depends on the service, subscription and source recording.

Low-Noise Linear Power Supply

The Gen 2 uses an upgraded linear power supply designed to provide clean and stable power to the audio circuitry.

Eversolo specifies a power-supply noise level below 40 microvolts, helping to reduce electrical interference within the sensitive DAC and analogue output stages.

Separate filtering and regulation are used throughout the player to support the digital processing, clocking, storage and analogue audio sections.

Fully Balanced Audio Architecture

The analogue signal path is balanced from the DAC section through to the XLR pre-amplifier outputs.

Balanced XLR connections can provide improved resistance to interference, particularly with longer cables or equipment installed in electrically busy environments.

Conventional RCA outputs are also provided for amplifiers and active loudspeakers without balanced inputs.

Fixed or Variable Analogue Output

The XLR and RCA outputs can be configured for fixed-level operation into an integrated amplifier or pre-amplifier with its own volume control.

Variable output allows the DMP-A6 Gen 2 to operate as a digital pre-amplifier connected directly to a suitable power amplifier or active loudspeaker system.

Eversolo's EVC output engine is designed to provide precise volume adjustment while preserving the shape and integrity of the digital audio signal.

Check the Volume Before Direct Power-Amplifier Connection

Begin with a low variable-output setting whenever the Eversolo is connected directly to a power amplifier or active loudspeakers.

Do not select a fixed high-level output unless the connected equipment provides another safe method of controlling listening volume.

Balanced XLR Output Performance

The balanced XLR outputs provide a maximum level of 5.2V.

Eversolo specifies a signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range above 128dB, with THD+N below 0.00009% and channel crosstalk better than 125dB.

These outputs are particularly appropriate for a compatible balanced amplifier or pair of active loudspeakers.

RCA Output Performance

The unbalanced RCA outputs provide a maximum level of 2.6V.

Eversolo specifies a signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range above 124dB, with THD+N below 0.00011%.

RCA is the appropriate connection for the majority of conventional integrated amplifiers and other Hi-Fi products without balanced inputs.

Integrated Streaming Services

The Eversolo platform provides direct access to a wide range of compatible online music services.

Current services include TIDAL, Qobuz, Amazon Music, Apple Music, HIGHRESAUDIO, Presto Music, IDAGIO, Deezer, SoundCloud, TuneIn, Radio Paradise, Calm Radio and internet radio services.

Service availability, features and maximum quality can vary according to region, subscription, firmware and the service provider.

Spotify, TIDAL and Qobuz Connect

Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect and Qobuz Connect allow music to be selected through each service's own app while the audio stream is delivered directly to the Eversolo over the network.

Qobuz Connect supports compatible lossless and high-resolution playback up to 24-bit/192kHz.

Current Eversolo firmware also supports Spotify Connect Lossless at up to 24-bit/44.1kHz where the account, recording and Spotify service provide it.

Apple Music and the EOS Audio Engine

Apple Music is available through Eversolo's integrated application rather than relying solely on playback from a separate phone or tablet.

The Eversolo Original Sampling-rate Audio Engine, or EOS, is designed to bypass conventional Android sample-rate conversion and preserve the original sampling rate of compatible music applications.

Eversolo also provides AirPlay playback guidance for compatible devices and firmware, although current features should be checked where a particular Apple playback or multiroom function is essential.

Roon Ready

Roon Ready certification allows the DMP-A6 Gen 2 to operate as a recognised endpoint within a compatible Roon system.

Roon combines supported streaming services and locally stored music into a unified library with detailed metadata, recommendations and multiroom control.

A separate Roon Server and appropriate Roon subscription are required.

Local Music Library Management

Music from an internal SSD, USB storage, network share or compatible cloud service can be indexed into Eversolo's library interface.

Compatible file metadata is used to organise music by artist, album, composer, genre, format and other categories.

Search, favourites, playlists and cross-service queues make it possible to manage local files and supported online services from the same interface.

Internal M.2 NVMe SSD Storage

An internal M.2 NVMe 2280 slot allows a suitable solid-state drive to be installed for local music storage.

The current detailed Eversolo specification supports compatible drives with capacities up to 8TB.

Internal storage keeps the music library inside the player and avoids leaving a portable USB drive permanently connected.

The SSD Is Not Included

An M.2 NVMe SSD must be purchased separately and installed before internal music storage can be used.

Confirm drive compatibility, capacity and installation requirements before purchasing an SSD.

USB Storage

Two USB 3.0 host connections allow compatible external hard drives, SSDs, memory sticks and other supported accessories to be connected.

Music on a USB drive can be played directly or added to the Eversolo music library.

Large external drives may require their own power supply, particularly where their power demand exceeds the USB connection's available output.

Network and Cloud Storage

The DMP-A6 Gen 2 can access compatible computers, music servers and NAS drives through protocols including SMB, NFS, UPnP and WebDAV.

Compatible cloud and media platforms include Dropbox, OneDrive, Plex and Emby.

Network performance, permissions and folder-sharing settings must be configured correctly before a remote library can be scanned.

External USB CD Drive Support

A compatible external USB optical drive can be used for CD playback and music ripping.

Ripped music can be stored on an installed SSD or another suitable storage device and added to the Eversolo music library.

Drive compatibility, metadata results and available ripping formats can depend on the connected USB drive and current firmware.

No CD Drive Is Built In

The DMP-A6 Gen 2 does not contain an internal CD mechanism.

CD playback or ripping requires a separately purchased compatible USB optical drive.

USB Audio Input for Computers and Mobile Devices

A compatible computer, phone or tablet can use the Eversolo as an external USB DAC.

Supported Windows systems require the appropriate Eversolo USB audio driver for advanced ASIO and WASAPI operation.

Compatible USB audio supports high-resolution PCM and DSD, although the maximum format can vary according to the operating system, playback software and connection.

Optical and Coaxial Digital Inputs

Optical and coaxial inputs allow a compatible CD transport, television, games console or other digital source to use the internal Eversolo DAC and pre-amplifier.

These inputs support stereo PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz, DoP64 and compatible MQA signals.

The connected source should be configured to output a compatible two-channel digital format.

HDMI ARC for Television Sound

HDMI ARC allows a compatible television to send stereo audio to the DMP-A6 Gen 2.

This allows television programmes, films and games to use the Eversolo DAC, volume control and connected stereo system.

The HDMI ARC input supports stereo PCM at up to 24-bit/192kHz.

Set the Television to Stereo PCM

The HDMI ARC input is designed for stereo PCM and does not turn the DMP-A6 Gen 2 into a Dolby Atmos or multichannel AV receiver.

Set the television's digital audio output to PCM or stereo if no sound is heard.

USB Digital Audio Output

A compatible external USB DAC can be connected when the Eversolo is used primarily as a streaming transport and library controller.

USB audio output supports compatible native DSD512, 32-bit/768kHz PCM and MQA.

The selected external DAC must support the chosen format and comply with the relevant USB Audio Class standard.

Optical and Coaxial Digital Outputs

Optical and coaxial outputs allow the player to feed an amplifier, receiver or external DAC with a suitable digital input.

Both outputs support compatible stereo PCM at up to 24-bit/192kHz, DoP64 and MQA.

These connections provide a straightforward way to compare the internal Eversolo DAC with an existing external converter.

HDMI Multichannel Audio Output

The separate HDMI audio output can send compatible digital audio to an AV receiver, surround processor or other suitable HDMI audio device.

It supports multichannel PCM at up to 192kHz and native DSD64, with configurations up to 5.1 channels where the connected equipment and source format allow.

This connection is separate from the HDMI ARC input used to receive stereo television sound.

HDMI Audio Output Is Not a Video Switcher

The DMP-A6 Gen 2 is an audio player rather than an HDMI video source selector or conventional AV receiver.

Confirm compatibility with the connected AV receiver or processor before relying on multichannel DSD or high-resolution PCM output.

Room Correction

Current Eversolo software provides room-correction support for the DMP-A6 Gen 2.

Measurements can be made using a compatible phone or supported external measurement microphone, allowing correction filters to be created for the system and listening position.

Room correction can help reduce the influence of frequency-response peaks caused by room dimensions, speaker placement and nearby boundaries.

Room Correction Does Not Replace Good Setup

Digital correction cannot compensate fully for unsuitable loudspeakers, extreme acoustic problems or poor speaker placement.

Position the speakers and listening seat carefully before carrying out measurements.

Graphic and Parametric EQ

The Eversolo platform provides multi-band graphic and parametric equalisation for detailed tonal adjustment.

Independent left and right channel adjustment can help compensate for an uneven room or an asymmetrical listening position.

Preset profiles are also available for users who prefer simpler adjustment.

Bluetooth 5.0 Input

Bluetooth 5.0 allows compatible phones, tablets and computers to play directly through the Eversolo.

SBC and AAC codecs are supported.

Bluetooth provides a convenient option for guests and occasional listening, although Ethernet or Wi-Fi will normally provide better quality and greater functionality.

Bluetooth Is an Input, Not a Headphone Output

The published specification describes Bluetooth reception from a source device.

Do not assume that the DMP-A6 Gen 2 can transmit its audio to Bluetooth headphones or speakers.

Gigabit Ethernet and Dual-Band Wi-Fi

The wired RJ45 connection supports 10, 100 and 1000Mbps Ethernet.

Dual-band Wi-Fi supports compatible 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless networks.

Ethernet is normally preferable for very large network libraries, high-resolution streaming and environments with congested or unreliable Wi-Fi.

Wake-on-LAN and 12V Trigger

Wake-on-LAN allows the Eversolo to be activated through a compatible network when the required settings are enabled.

A 12V trigger output can switch compatible power amplifiers or other suitable equipment on and off with the player.

The supplied trigger cable can be used where the connected product has a compatible trigger input.

No Conventional Analogue Input

The DMP-A6 Gen 2 provides USB, HDMI ARC, optical, coaxial, Bluetooth and network audio inputs.

It does not include a conventional stereo analogue line input or a moving-magnet or moving-coil phono stage.

An analogue source such as a turntable, tuner or cassette deck must connect to a separate amplifier, pre-amplifier or suitable analogue-to-digital converter.

No Headphone Output

The DMP-A6 Gen 2 does not include a front or rear headphone socket.

Headphone listening requires a suitable headphone amplifier connected to the RCA, XLR or compatible digital output.
