Audio T Verdict
The Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless take an already excellent all-rounder and push it much closer to serious hi-fi territory. The new 42mm driver is inspired by Sennheiser's famous HD 600 series, while aptX Lossless, 24-bit/96kHz USB audio and Dolby Atmos add substantially more flexibility for listeners who care about how their music reaches the headphones.
The practical side has moved forward too. Sennheiser's new Hybrid Adaptive Noise Cancellation uses eight digital microphones and is considerably more effective than the system in MOMENTUM 4, particularly through the middle frequencies where voices, engines and everyday environmental noise often live. Battery life remains excellent at up to 57 hours with ANC active, and the battery itself can now be replaced rather than determining the useful life of the entire headphone.
What we like most is that Sennheiser has not forgotten that these are still headphones rather than a technology demonstration. They remain comfortable, relatively light, easy to operate and capable of working wirelessly, over USB-C or through a conventional analogue cable. If you want one premium pair of headphones to cover serious music listening, commuting, films, calls and travel, the MOMENTUM 5 are an exceptionally complete package.
Bluetooth 6.0 and Auracast Are Not Current Specifications
Sennheiser currently specifies MOMENTUM 5 Wireless as a Bluetooth 5.4 product. The manufacturer has stated that Bluetooth 6.0 is planned through a future firmware update. We would therefore not treat Bluetooth 6.0 or Auracast as currently active features until Sennheiser confirms their release through production firmware.

A New 42mm Driver Inspired by the HD 600 Series
The acoustic heart of MOMENTUM 5 is an in-house 42mm dynamic transducer which Sennheiser says takes inspiration from its celebrated HD 600 family.
That does not mean MOMENTUM 5 are simply a wireless HD 600. The two products have fundamentally different acoustic environments, with MOMENTUM 5 using sealed earcups, integrated amplification, DSP and noise cancellation.
What has carried across is the emphasis on:
- Natural tonal balance
- Fine low-level detail
- Controlled dynamic behaviour
- Clear midrange reproduction
- Low distortion
More Hi-Fi Focused Than MOMENTUM 4
MOMENTUM 4 already established a strong reputation for musical wireless performance, but the fifth generation moves the range further towards Sennheiser's traditional audiophile products.
The new transducer tuning is intended to provide a more balanced and detailed presentation while still retaining the low-frequency extension and sense of scale expected from a premium closed-back headphone.
6Hz to 40kHz Through Bluetooth and USB
Sennheiser specifies the MOMENTUM 5 frequency response from 6Hz to 40kHz when listening through Bluetooth or USB.
The wide bandwidth gives the digital acoustic system considerable operating headroom beyond the conventional audible range.
Through the analogue line input, the specified response is 6Hz to 22kHz.
108dB SPL
The active system is specified at 108dB SPL at 1kHz and 0dBFS.
Because MOMENTUM 5 contain their own amplification and DSP, the Bluetooth and USB listening experience is largely controlled by Sennheiser rather than depending on the power of a separate headphone amplifier.
Less Than 0.2% Distortion
Sennheiser specifies total harmonic distortion below 0.2% at 1kHz and 100dB SPL.
Keeping unwanted harmonic content low is important in a headphone designed to reveal fine recording information rather than simply create an immediately dramatic sound.
aptX Lossless
One of the most important upgrades over MOMENTUM 4 is support for aptX Lossless.
With a compatible transmitter and suitable source material, aptX Lossless can provide bit-perfect CD-quality Bluetooth audio under appropriate wireless conditions.
That is an important distinction from simply using a higher-quality lossy Bluetooth codec.
Both Ends Must Support aptX Lossless
The headphones alone cannot force a phone, tablet or computer to transmit using aptX Lossless. The source hardware and software must also support the codec, and the original music should be of suitable quality. If any part of that chain does not support Lossless, Bluetooth will fall back to another mutually supported codec.
aptX Adaptive
aptX Adaptive remains available when Lossless operation is not required or cannot be maintained.
The codec can dynamically adjust its operation according to wireless conditions and is also important for lower-latency use with compatible source equipment.
aptX HD
Sennheiser's current formal specification also lists aptX HD.
This broad codec support makes MOMENTUM 5 compatible with several generations of higher-quality Qualcomm Bluetooth source equipment rather than relying on a single modern codec.
SBC and AAC
Standard SBC and AAC support ensures broad compatibility with mainstream phones, tablets, laptops and other Bluetooth sources.
The actual codec selected during playback always depends on the capabilities shared by the headphones and transmitting device.
Snapdragon Sound
MOMENTUM 5 also support Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound, which brings together compatible Qualcomm audio technologies when the headphones are partnered with suitable source hardware.
Again, Snapdragon Sound functionality depends on support at the source end and should not be assumed simply because the headphones provide it.
Bluetooth 5.4
The current MOMENTUM 5 specification uses Bluetooth 5.4 Class 1.
Supported Bluetooth profiles include:
What About Bluetooth 6.0?
Sennheiser has announced that Bluetooth 6.0 is intended to arrive through a later firmware update. The current manufacturer specification remains Bluetooth 5.4, so that is the specification we would use until the upgrade has been formally released.
Bluetooth Multipoint
MOMENTUM 5 support simultaneous Bluetooth connections with two devices.
This is particularly useful when switching between a computer and smartphone during the working day.
Audio can move automatically according to whichever connected device is actively playing, receiving notifications or handling a call, while device management is also available through the Smart Control Plus app.
Up to 24-bit/96kHz Through USB-C
The USB-C connection is capable of much more than charging.
Connect MOMENTUM 5 directly to a compatible phone, tablet or computer and they can operate as a USB audio device supporting playback at up to 24-bit/96kHz.
This provides a direct digital route into the headphones without Bluetooth compression.
Why Use USB?
USB-C is the straightforward choice if you want to remove Bluetooth from the signal path altogether. It also avoids wondering which wireless codec your source is using and provides a reliable 24-bit/96kHz connection from compatible devices.
3.5mm Analogue Wired Listening
Sennheiser supplies an analogue cable with a conventional 3.5mm source plug and 2.5mm connection at the headphone end.
This gives MOMENTUM 5 compatibility with conventional headphone outputs including:
- Portable audio players
- Aircraft entertainment systems
- DACs
- Hi-fi equipment
- Computers
- Other analogue headphone sources
Active or Passive Analogue Operation
MOMENTUM 5 can operate in two different ways through their analogue input.
With the headphones switched on, the signal continues through the internal sound-processing system.
With the headphones switched off, the analogue cable can still be used in passive mode without DSP.
A Useful Flat-Battery Fallback
Passive analogue operation means the headphones can still reproduce music from a suitable wired source if the rechargeable battery is completely exhausted. ANC, DSP, Dolby Atmos and other powered functions will naturally be unavailable until the headphones are charged again.
Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio
MOMENTUM 5 introduce immersive Dolby Atmos spatial audio to the MOMENTUM over-ear range.
Spatial processing is designed to move the presentation away from the conventional feeling of sound being positioned only between the ears and towards a more room-like three-dimensional soundstage.
It can be particularly effective with compatible:
- Dolby Atmos music
- Films
- Television
- Gaming
Head Tracking
Head tracking allows the spatial presentation to react to the movement of the listener.
This can make spatial audio feel more anchored rather than rotating rigidly with the headphones every time you turn your head.
Availability and behaviour will naturally depend on the content, source platform and settings being used.
Switch Dolby Atmos From the Headphones
Sennheiser adds a dedicated touch gesture for spatial audio.
A two-finger double tap on the touch surface can enable or disable Dolby Atmos without needing to open the app every time.
Eight-Band Equaliser
MOMENTUM 5 expand the manual sound adjustment available through Smart Control Plus with an eight-band EQ.
This gives considerably greater control than a simple bass and treble adjustment and allows more targeted changes across the audible frequency range.
Sound Personalization
Sound Personalization remains available for listeners who would rather make preference-based choices than manually adjust individual frequency bands.
The app guides you through a listening process and creates a profile around your preferences.
EQ or Sound Personalization?
Eight-Band EQ
Best if you already understand which parts of the frequency range you want to increase or decrease and prefer direct manual control.
Sound Personalization
Best if you would rather make listening choices and let Sennheiser build a personalised sound profile around those preferences.
Completely New Hybrid Adaptive ANC
Sennheiser has substantially redesigned noise cancellation for MOMENTUM 5.
Eight digital microphones, four on each earcup, are used by the adaptive ANC system.
Sennheiser states that this delivers up to three times stronger cancellation through midrange frequencies compared with MOMENTUM 4.
Why Midrange Noise Matters
Environmental noise is not confined to deep engine rumble.
Conversation, traffic, office activity and many mechanical noises occupy the middle frequencies, so improving cancellation in this region can make a noticeable difference to real-world isolation.
Digital ANC Microphones
The previous MOMENTUM 4 used analogue microphones within its ANC arrangement.
MOMENTUM 5 moves to eight digital microphones, giving Sennheiser greater control over the information being analysed by the noise-cancelling system.
Adaptive Noise Cancellation
The system continuously responds to changes in the surrounding environment rather than relying on one fixed amount of cancellation.
The ANC can also be adjusted through Smart Control Plus and switched off entirely when you do not need it.
Natural Transparency
Transparency Mode reverses the purpose of the external microphones and allows surrounding sound back into the headphones.
This is useful when:
- Speaking to somebody
- Listening for announcements
- Working in a shared environment
- Walking somewhere where situational awareness matters
Improved Anti-Wind Mode
Wind passing across external microphones can create substantial low-frequency noise in an ANC headphone.
Sennheiser's Anti-Wind Mode is designed to reduce this effect during both music listening and calls.
Calls and Own Voice Detection
The same microphone system also supports voice communication.
Beamforming processing helps concentrate on the speaker while reducing unwanted surrounding sound, while Own Voice Detection helps the headphones recognise and present your own voice more naturally during calls.
Microphone Frequency Response
Sennheiser specifies the MEMS microphone system from 20Hz to 15kHz.
This wider speech bandwidth helps maintain natural voice character rather than reducing calls to a very narrow telephone-like frequency range.
Gaming and Low Latency
MOMENTUM 5 can also be used for gaming.
Standard Bluetooth latency is quoted at approximately 100 to 200ms, while compatible aptX operation can reduce this into approximately the 20 to 70ms region.
For the most predictable response, wired USB remains an excellent option.
Low Latency Depends on the Source
The headphones cannot provide aptX Adaptive low-latency operation if the transmitting device does not support the required codec. USB-C provides a useful wired alternative for gaming when wireless latency is critical.
BTD 700 Compatibility
The Sennheiser BTD 700 Bluetooth USB-C adapter can be paired with MOMENTUM 5 when a computer, phone or other source does not provide the Bluetooth features you require directly.
The dongle provides a dedicated Qualcomm-capable wireless route and can make high-quality Bluetooth setup considerably more predictable than relying entirely on the source's built-in Bluetooth hardware.
The BTD 700 is an optional accessory and is not included with MOMENTUM 5.
Up to 57 Hours Battery Life With ANC
Sennheiser specifies up to 57 hours of music playback over Bluetooth with Active Noise Cancellation operating.
That remains exceptional endurance for headphones offering this level of noise cancellation and processing.
10 Minutes for Up to Seven Hours
If the battery is running low, approximately ten minutes of charging can provide up to seven additional hours of playback.
A full charge takes approximately two hours.
700mAh Replaceable Battery
Perhaps one of the most important long-term improvements is easy to miss on the specification sheet.
The 700mAh lithium-ion battery is replaceable.
It is located inside the left earcup and Sennheiser has designed the headphones so that the user can gain access using a small Phillips screwdriver and the appropriate replacement battery.
Why a Replaceable Battery Matters
Rechargeable batteries naturally lose capacity after years of charging cycles. On many wireless headphones that eventually determines the life of the entire product. MOMENTUM 5 allow the battery to be replaced instead, making them a much more appealing long-term ownership proposition.
Replaceable Earpads
Sennheiser also confirms that the earpads are replaceable.
As the part of the headphone that receives the most direct daily wear, being able to renew the cushions is another worthwhile feature for long-term ownership.
290g Weight
MOMENTUM 5 weigh approximately 290g.
Despite the substantial battery, eight-microphone ANC system and internal electronics, they remain relatively light for a full-sized premium wireless headphone.
Fold-Flat Design
The earcups rotate flat to reduce the amount of space they occupy inside the supplied case.
Sennheiser specifies folded dimensions of approximately 180 x 197 x 47mm.
Wear Detection
The headphones recognise when they are being worn.
Music can automatically pause when they are removed and restart when the headphones are put back on.
The same system can also accept an incoming call automatically when the headphones are placed on the head.
Automatic Power Off
MOMENTUM 5 switch off automatically after approximately 15 minutes of inactivity.
They can also power down when stored correctly inside the carry case and the lid is closed.
Unlike some earlier automatic-power systems, the headphones remain switched off when removed from the case until you deliberately press the power button.
Touch Controls
The right earcup continues the established MOMENTUM control arrangement.
Music, volume, calls, ANC and Transparency Mode can be controlled using taps and directional swipes, while power and Bluetooth pairing remain on the physical button.
Smart Control Plus
Sennheiser's Smart Control Plus app provides access to the deeper functionality within MOMENTUM 5.
Features include:
- Eight-band EQ
- Sound Personalization
- ANC adjustment
- Transparency Mode adjustment
- Dolby Atmos settings
- Bluetooth connection management
- Multipoint management
