Neat Acoustics Momentum JS Standmount Speakers
The Momentum JS is a premium two-way standmount loudspeaker inspired by the larger Neat Ultimatum XLS.
It combines Neat’s hallmark isobaric bass loading with an Air Motion Transformer tweeter, a 170mm bass and midrange driver and a mechanically decoupled front baffle. The aim is to provide the scale, control and musical involvement of a much larger speaker from a cabinet measuring only 370mm high.
Air Motion Transformer Tweeter
High frequencies are handled by an Air Motion Transformer tweeter.
An AMT uses a lightweight folded diaphragm rather than a conventional dome. Its low moving mass allows it to respond quickly to changes in the music, helping the Momentum JS reproduce fine detail, instrumental texture and the space surrounding performers.
The tweeter is mounted within the speaker’s decoupled front baffle alongside the main bass and midrange driver.
170mm Bass and Midrange Driver
A 170mm drive unit handles the bass and midrange frequencies heard directly from the front of the cabinet.
This driver covers the core of the musical range, including vocals, guitars, piano and orchestral instruments. It works with the AMT tweeter to maintain a coherent two-way presentation.
Isobaric Bass Loading
A second 170mm driver is mounted internally behind the main driver. The two units operate together with a sealed chamber between them, forming Neat’s isobaric bass system.
This configuration allows the Momentum JS to produce deeper and more controlled bass from a smaller cabinet than a conventional single-driver arrangement would normally require.
The internal driver is not visible from the outside, but it is an important part of the speaker’s low-frequency performance.
Decoupled Front Baffle
The front baffle is mechanically separated from the main cabinet using a flexible polyethylene membrane.
This controlled decoupling helps limit the transfer of unwanted cabinet vibration to the drive units, allowing them to operate from a more stable mechanical platform.
The principle is derived from Neat’s flagship Ultimatum loudspeakers.
Filtered Bass-Reflex Port
The rear-facing bass-reflex port uses a low-Q design with an acoustic filter to control airflow and support clean, extended bass.
A rear port does not automatically prevent the speaker from working near a wall, but the distance from the wall will affect the bass balance. Moving the speakers closer generally increases bass output, while pulling them forward can improve openness and image depth.
Hard-Wired Crossover
The crossover is assembled using point-to-point wiring rather than a conventional printed circuit board.
Neat uses carefully selected components, including polypropylene capacitors and low-loss air-cored inductors, to blend the drive units while preserving timing and tonal consistency.
Speaker Stands and Positioning
The Momentum JS should be used on rigid, stable speaker stands. Neat recommends stands of around 600mm for most standmount models, although the ideal height will depend on the listening position.
A useful starting point is to:
- Position both speakers the same distance from the listening seat
- Place the tweeters close to seated ear height
- Keep both stands level and stable
- Leave some space from the rear and side walls
- Avoid pushing the speakers tightly into room corners
- Experiment with small changes in toe-in
- Move the speakers a few centimetres at a time
Speaker Stands Are Not Included

Room Suitability
The Momentum JS can deliver substantial scale from a compact cabinet. It can therefore work in smaller rooms while also producing enough weight and presence for many medium-sized listening spaces.
Its extended bass response means room acoustics remain important. Corners and enclosed furniture can exaggerate low frequencies, while well-positioned stands and careful spacing can improve control and stereo focus.
Amplifier Matching
Neat recommends amplifiers rated between 25 and 200 watts per channel.
The Momentum JS has a sensitivity of 86dB, an 8-ohm nominal impedance and a 5-ohm minimum. It benefits from an amplifier with good current delivery and control, particularly when reproducing demanding bass passages.
Power ratings alone do not determine compatibility. The amplifier’s design, room size, listening distance and preferred volume should also be considered.
