Neat Acoustics Momentum J6 Floorstanding Speakers

Audio T Verdict

The Neat Momentum J6 combines the scale and low-frequency authority of a large floorstanding speaker with a cabinet that remains relatively slim and easy to accommodate.

Its AMT tweeter and Neat R3 bass/mid driver form a sealed two-way speaker in the upper enclosure. Twin downward-firing 170mm drivers then operate isobarically in the lower chamber, extending the bass without overwhelming the rest of the music.

The J6 is revealing enough to justify high-quality electronics, but its 8-ohm nominal impedance and 5-ohm minimum make it compatible with a broad range of capable amplifiers.

Neat Acoustics Momentum J6 Floorstanding Speakers

The Momentum J6 is the full-range floorstanding model in Neat’s Momentum series. It draws on engineering developed for the flagship Ultimatum range, combining an AMT tweeter, Neat’s R3 bass/mid driver and an integral isobaric bass system.

The cabinet is divided into two acoustically separate sections. The sealed upper enclosure handles the majority of the musical range, while the lower bass-reflex chamber is dedicated to the lowest frequencies.

AMT High-Frequency Driver

The Air Motion Transformer tweeter uses a lightweight folded diaphragm rather than a conventional dome.

Its low moving mass allows it to respond quickly to musical changes, helping the J6 reproduce fine detail, instrumental texture and the space surrounding voices and performers.

The tweeter is carefully integrated with the R3 bass/mid driver to maintain a coherent presentation through the crossover region.

Neat R3 Bass and Midrange Driver

Neat’s R3 driver handles bass and midrange frequencies within the sealed upper section of the cabinet.

Separating this driver from the lower bass chamber allows it to reproduce voices and instruments without sharing its working air volume with the dedicated low-frequency units.

This arrangement helps the J6 combine natural midrange expression with the depth and scale provided by the isobaric bass system below.

Twin Isobaric Bass Drivers

The lower chamber contains two downward-firing 170mm bass drivers operating in an isobaric configuration.

In an isobaric design, two drivers work together with a controlled volume of air between them. This allows Neat to achieve extended and well-controlled bass from a cabinet smaller than a conventional design with comparable low-frequency reach.

The bass drivers cover only the lowest frequencies, effectively acting as an integral passive bass system within each speaker.

Passive Isobaric Bass

The J6 does not contain a built-in amplifier or powered subwoofer. All drive units are powered by the connected Hi-Fi amplifier through the speaker cable.

2.5-Way Speaker Design

The J6 is described as a 2.5-way loudspeaker because its dedicated bass drivers reinforce the low frequencies while the R3 driver continues through the bass and midrange.

This arrangement can provide greater bass depth and scale while preserving the coherence of a relatively simple two-way upper section.

Hard-Wired Crossover

The crossover is assembled using point-to-point, hard-wired connections rather than a conventional printed circuit board.

Neat selects premium crossover components through measurement and extensive listening, with the aim of preserving musical timing, tonal balance and integration between the drive units.

Ultimatum-Inspired Plinth

The solid plinth is inspired by Neat’s Ultimatum loudspeakers and provides a stable mechanical foundation for the cabinet.

Correctly levelled and supported, the plinth helps maintain cabinet stability and accurate stereo focus. The downward-firing bass system also relies on the intended clearance beneath the enclosure.

Positioning the Momentum J6

The J6 produces substantial low-frequency energy, so careful positioning is important.

A useful starting point is to:

  • Place the speakers the same distance from the listening position
  • Leave a reasonable gap from the rear wall
  • Avoid placing either speaker tightly into a corner
  • Ensure both cabinets are level and firmly supported
  • Keep the space beneath the speakers unobstructed
  • Experiment with small changes in toe-in
  • Adjust positioning a few centimetres at a time

Moving the speakers closer to the wall will generally increase bass output. Pulling them further into the room will usually improve openness, definition and image depth.

Amplifier Matching

Neat recommends amplifier power between 25 and 200 watts.

The J6 has a sensitivity of 86dB, an 8-ohm nominal impedance and a 5-ohm minimum impedance. It will benefit from an amplifier with good current delivery and control, particularly when reproducing demanding bass passages.

Amplifier power alone does not determine compatibility. Room size, listening distance, preferred volume and the amplifier’s tonal balance should also be considered.

Our amplifier and speaker matching guide explains how impedance, sensitivity and power ratings work together.

Running In

Neat advises that new loudspeakers begin to change after approximately 30 hours of normal listening, although some models may take up to 200 hours to reach their fully settled performance.

Avoid making final positioning or system-balancing decisions immediately after installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Neat Momentum J6 speakers supplied as a pair?

Yes. They are supplied as a matched stereo pair of passive floorstanding speakers.

Is the Momentum J6 the same speaker as the Momentum Jet-6?

Momentum J6 is Neat’s current product name. Momentum Jet-6 is the earlier wording still used on some retailer pages and searches.

What is an isobaric speaker?

An isobaric design uses two bass drivers working together to provide extended low-frequency performance from a comparatively compact enclosure.

Does the J6 contain powered subwoofers?

No. Its dedicated bass drivers are passive and are powered by the connected amplifier.

What amplifier power is recommended?

Neat recommends an amplifier rated between 25 and 200 watts.

Are the speakers difficult to drive?

Their 8-ohm nominal and 5-ohm minimum impedance are reasonably amplifier-friendly, although the 86dB sensitivity rewards capable amplification.

Can the J6 be positioned close to a wall?

It can work relatively close to a wall, but the final distance should be adjusted carefully to achieve the correct bass balance.

How large is each speaker?

Each cabinet measures 1050mm high, 220mm wide and 230mm deep.

How much does each speaker weigh?

Each Momentum J6 weighs approximately 23kg.

How long do the speakers take to run in?

An initial change should be heard after around 30 hours, although full settling may take up to 200 hours.

Can Audio T arrange a demonstration?

Yes. A demonstration is strongly recommended to assess amplifier matching, positioning and suitability for the intended room.
