Linn Selekt DSM Classic Hub Modular Network Music Player

Linn Selekt DSM Classic Hub Modular Network Music Player

Audio T Verdict

Linn Selekt DSM Classic Hub is one of the most flexible network music players available, allowing its digital-to-analogue conversion and output configuration to be selected around the needs of an individual system.

It can operate as the control centre for Linn Exakt loudspeakers, become a high-quality streamer and pre-amplifier for external amplification, or form a complete integrated system with internal stereo power-amplifier cartridges.

The 2024 version adds Utopik power, dedicated subwoofer connections and a conveniently positioned headphone output while retaining comprehensive streaming, turntable, television and digital-source connectivity.

The modular design does mean that the exact configuration must be established before ordering. The base Classic Hub does not automatically include a conventional analogue output or internal speaker amplifier.

Linn Selekt DSM Classic Hub 2024 Network Music Player

Selekt DSM Classic Hub is a modular network music player, digital and analogue pre-amplifier, system controller and configurable amplification platform.

Rather than fixing every customer to one set of outputs and one level of digital-to-analogue conversion, Linn allows the Hub to be configured using interchangeable output cartridges and DAC modules.

It can begin as a Hub for compatible Linn Exakt products, be fitted with stereo line outputs for external amplification, or gain one or more internal power-amplifier cartridges to drive passive loudspeakers.

The system can also be expanded later, allowing the same Classic Hub to develop as the loudspeakers, amplification or wider installation changes.

Output Cartridges and DAC Modules Are Selected Separately

The standard Black and Silver options on this page are for the Selekt DSM Classic Hub chassis.

Conventional analogue line outputs and passive-loudspeaker outputs require the appropriate output cartridge and a compatible DAC module.

Contact Audio T before ordering so that the correct Hub, output, DAC and amplification configuration can be specified.

Modular Selekt DSM Architecture

The rear of Selekt DSM contains three main cartridge slots for analogue output or internal power-amplifier modules.

Each output cartridge performs a particular role, such as providing two-channel line outputs, driving passive loudspeakers or combining a centre-channel amplifier with a subwoofer feed.

A compatible DAC module must be fitted to each output cartridge that is required to produce analogue audio.

This allows the digital conversion and output arrangement to be selected independently while keeping the complete system within one enclosure.

Use Classic Hub without Output Cartridges

A Classic Hub can be ordered without analogue or power-amplifier cartridges when it is being used with compatible Linn Exakt products.

Digital audio and timing information can be sent through Exakt Link to Linn Exakt loudspeakers or an Exaktbox connected to suitable external power amplifiers.

This arrangement keeps the music signal in the digital domain until close to the loudspeaker amplification and allows Linn's Exakt digital crossover and timing correction to be applied.

Customers using conventional analogue active speakers, an external power amplifier or passive loudspeakers will require suitable output cartridges.

Hub-Only Configuration

  • Designed for compatible Linn Exakt systems
  • No conventional stereo analogue output cartridge
  • No internal passive-speaker amplifier cartridge
  • Two Exakt Link connections provided
  • Future cartridge upgrades remain possible

Cartridge-Based Configuration

  • Stereo line outputs for external amplification
  • Internal stereo amplification for passive speakers
  • Multiple cartridges for bi-amplification
  • Multiple cartridges for tri-amplification
  • Specialist surround and subwoofer options

Stereo Line-Out Cartridge

The two-channel line-out cartridge converts Selekt DSM into a network music player and analogue pre-amplifier for connection to an external power amplifier, active loudspeakers or another compatible line-level system.

Each channel provides both an unbalanced RCA output and balanced XLR output. Both connection types remain available, although the most appropriate option depends on the connected equipment and cable run.

Linn specifies 2V RMS from the RCA outputs and 4V RMS from the balanced XLR outputs at volume setting 80.

The cartridge must be fitted with a Standard, Katalyst or Organik stereo DAC module.

Stereo Power-Amplifier Cartridge

The stereo power-amplifier cartridge allows Selekt DSM to drive a pair of suitable passive loudspeakers directly.

It contains two channels of bridged Class D amplification with post-filter feedback and provides speaker connections through 4mm-compatible binding posts.

Linn specifies up to 100W per channel into 4 O or 50W per channel into 8 O.

As with the line-out cartridge, a compatible DAC module must be installed before the cartridge can produce audio.

Switch Off Before Connecting Loudspeakers

Selekt power-amplifier cartridges use bridged Class D outputs.

Loudspeaker cables should only be connected or disconnected while the Selekt DSM is switched off or disconnected from the mains.

The negative speaker terminals are not conventional earth connections and must not be connected together or used as a subwoofer ground.

Dual-Mono Line-Out Configuration

Linn also offers single-channel line-out cartridges for a dual-mono Organik configuration.

A pair is used to provide separate left and right output cartridges, each with its own mono Organik DAC.

Each channel includes RCA and balanced XLR connections, allowing the Classic Hub to operate as a high-performance dual-mono network player and pre-amplifier.

This configuration requires the appropriate matched cartridges, DACs and slot arrangement and should be supplied and installed by an experienced Linn retailer.

Hybrid Centre and Subwoofer Cartridge

A specialist 1.1-channel cartridge is available for selected installations.

It combines one Class D power-amplifier channel with a line-level channel that can be used for a centre loudspeaker and subwoofer within a suitably configured surround system.

This module is intended to operate alongside additional Selekt power-amplifier cartridges and the optional HDMI and Linn Surround modules.

Three Levels of DAC Performance

Each principal output cartridge requires a digital-to-analogue converter.

Linn offers three performance levels, allowing the conversion stage to be chosen independently of the line-level or power-amplifier output.

Standard DAC

  • Entry point into Selekt analogue output
  • Stereo DAC module
  • Suitable for line-out and power-amplifier cartridges
  • Can be upgraded later
  • Supports high-resolution PCM playback

Katalyst DAC

  • Higher-performance stereo conversion
  • Linn Katalyst DAC architecture
  • Designed for greater conversion precision
  • Available for line and power cartridges
  • Upgradeable to Organik

Organik DAC

  • Linn's highest current DAC architecture
  • Designed and implemented by Linn
  • Stereo and dual-mono configurations available
  • Network PCM playback up to 24-bit/384kHz
  • Available for line and power outputs

Organik Cannot Be Mixed with Other DAC Types

Where Organik is used, all fitted Selekt output cartridges must use compatible Organik DAC modules.

Standard or Katalyst modules cannot remain in other cartridge slots alongside Organik.

Audio T will confirm the required DAC arrangement when specifying an upgrade or multi-cartridge system.

Utopik Power Supply

The 2024 Classic Hub is powered by Linn's Utopik switch-mode power supply.

Utopik uses multiple feedback loops to monitor and regulate its output while filtering mains-borne interference.

Intelligent Valley Switching, Power Factor Correction and independently regulated power rails are used to supply the digital, analogue and optional amplifier circuitry.

The power supply is designed to respond efficiently as the demands of the fitted cartridges and music signal change.

High-Resolution Network Streaming

Selekt DSM can play music stored on a compatible network server or computer connected to the same home network.

Supported file types include FLAC, WAV, Apple Lossless, AIFF, AAC, MP3, OGG, WMA and DSD in DSF or DFF form.

PCM word depths from 16 to 24 bits are supported. Network playback up to 24-bit/384kHz is available with Organik conversion, while the supported limit through external digital inputs is 192kHz.

DSD64, DSD128 and DSD256 can be supported through a suitable Selekt analogue-output configuration.

DSD Playback Has Output Limitations

DSD is available only through a compatible analogue cartridge output and is normally restricted to the first configured output slot.

DSD is not supported through Exakt Link, Toslink, SPDIF digital output or external HDMI and USB inputs.

Space Optimisation and other digital processing are not applied during native DSD playback.

Integrated Streaming Services

Selekt DSM provides access to a broad range of current music and internet-radio services.

  • TIDAL
  • Qobuz
  • Spotify Connect
  • Deezer
  • AirPlay 2
  • Roon Ready playback
  • airable
  • TuneIn
  • Calm Radio

Service availability, subscriptions and available sound quality are controlled by the individual provider and may change over time.

Linn App and System Control

The Linn App provides control from a compatible smartphone, tablet or computer.

It can be used to browse network music, access supported streaming services, build playlists, select inputs and control playback and volume.

Linn's Manage Systems interface is used for product configuration, input setup, output assignment, Space Optimisation and installed-cartridge management.

Free software updates can be downloaded through the network connection as Linn develops the platform.

Space Optimisation

Linn Space Optimisation room-correction technology is included as standard.

It models the room, loudspeaker characteristics, speaker position and listening location to reduce the effect of unwanted low-frequency room interactions.

The system can be particularly useful where doors, furniture or the practical use of the room prevent the loudspeakers from being placed in their theoretical ideal position.

Space Optimisation can be applied to suitable cartridge outputs, Exakt systems and selected digital-output configurations.

Room Information

  • Room length, width and height
  • Wall and floor construction
  • Doors and windows
  • Listening position
  • Available speaker locations

System Information

  • Loudspeaker model
  • Speaker distance from surrounding walls
  • Subwoofer configuration
  • Cartridge and output arrangement
  • Preferred low-frequency balance

Moving Magnet Phono Input

A dedicated RCA moving magnet input allows a compatible turntable to connect directly to Selekt DSM.

Linn specifies 40dB of MM gain with an input impedance of 47kO and capacitance of 100pF.

This is suitable for a broad range of conventional moving magnet cartridges, subject to the cartridge manufacturer's loading requirements.

A turntable earth connection is also provided to help prevent unwanted hum.

Moving Coil Phono Input

A separate RCA moving coil input is provided for compatible low-output MC cartridges.

Linn specifies 54dB of gain with a 100 O input impedance and 470pF capacitance.

Cartridge output and recommended loading should be checked before connection because moving coil designs vary considerably.

Audio T can inspect the cartridge specification and configure the appropriate input level.

Select the Correct Phono Input

Moving magnet and moving coil cartridges require different gain and electrical loading.

A low-output moving coil cartridge connected to the MM input will normally play at extremely low volume, while an unsuitable high-output cartridge may overload the MC input.

RCA Line Input

A stereo RCA line-level input accepts a conventional analogue source such as a CD player, tuner, cassette deck, external DAC or separate phono stage.

Input sensitivity can be selected between 1V, 2V and 4V RMS to suit the output of the connected product.

This helps maintain sensible volume consistency between the analogue source and Selekt DSM's internal streaming services.

Toslink and SPDIF Digital Inputs

Two Toslink optical inputs and two coaxial SPDIF connections are provided for compatible digital sources.

Supported PCM sample rates extend up to 192kHz.

Suitable sources can include a CD transport, television, games system, set-top box or other digital music player.

One SPDIF connection can be configured as a fixed-level digital output instead of an input.

The SPDIF Digital Output Has No Volume Control

When configured as an output, the SPDIF connection operates at fixed digital level.

Connected digital loudspeakers or equipment must provide their own safe volume control.

USB Audio Class 2

A USB Type B Audio Class 2 connection allows a compatible Windows PC or Mac to send PCM audio directly to Selekt DSM.

Supported USB sample rates range from 44.1kHz to 192kHz.

The USB connection is an audio endpoint rather than a socket for a memory stick or portable hard drive.

Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Selekt DSM can connect to the home network through wired Ethernet or dual-band Wi-Fi supporting standards up to 802.11ac.

A wired Ethernet connection is recommended during initial installation and normally provides the most predictable network performance.

Bluetooth 4.2 with SBC encoding provides a convenient option for casual playback from a compatible phone, tablet or computer.

Direct network streaming normally offers higher potential sound quality and more complete control than Bluetooth.

HDMI ARC for Television Sound

The standard rear HDMI ARC connection allows compatible television sound to play through the Selekt DSM system.

A television should be configured to provide a supported stereo PCM signal unless the Selekt DSM has been equipped and configured for multichannel surround playback.

The standard rear socket supports ARC rather than eARC.

Optional HDMI Switching Module

The optional HDMI module adds four HDMI inputs and one HDMI output, allowing compatible video sources to be switched through the Selekt DSM.

The output connection can also provide eARC for compatible televisions.

Games consoles, streaming devices, Blu-ray players and set-top boxes can therefore connect directly to the optional module.

Linn recommends suitably certified Premium High Speed HDMI cables for reliable UHD and HDCP operation.

Optional Linn Surround Module

The HDMI switching module can be expanded with Linn's optional Surround module.

This enables compatible Dolby and DTS decoding and allows Selekt DSM to form the centre of a configurable multichannel system.

Output channels can be provided through internal power-amplifier cartridges, line-output cartridges, Exakt Link or an appropriate combination designed by a Linn specialist.

A complete Selekt surround installation can support configurations up to 7.2 channels, depending on the fitted modules and connected products.

Dedicated Subwoofer Outputs

The 2024 Classic Hub provides two RCA subwoofer connections for a stereo 2.1 configuration.

They can be configured for bass reinforcement, where the main loudspeakers continue to receive a full-range signal, or bass redirection according to the supported system setup.

Subwoofer level, crossover behaviour, placement and Space Optimisation should be configured as part of the complete loudspeaker system.

Do Not Use a Grounded High-Level Subwoofer Input without Advice

Selekt power-amplifier cartridges use bridged Class D outputs and their negative speaker terminals are not connected to earth.

Use the dedicated line-level subwoofer connections or follow a connection method approved by both Linn and the subwoofer manufacturer.

Integrated Headphone Amplifier

A front-access 6.3mm quarter-inch headphone socket allows personal listening without adding a separate headphone amplifier.

The convenient position makes it easier to connect and remove headphones without reaching behind the system.

Headphone sensitivity and impedance should still be considered when selecting a suitable model.

Two Exakt Link Connections

Two Exakt Link sockets allow compatible Linn Exakt loudspeakers, Exaktboxes and other supported products to connect to the Classic Hub.

Exakt sends digital audio, timing and configuration data to the connected component.

Compatible loudspeakers can then use Linn's digital crossover, drive-unit timing correction and individual channel processing.

Exakt system design and configuration should be completed by a Linn specialist.

Single-Amplifier Configuration

One stereo power-amplifier cartridge can drive a compatible pair of passive loudspeakers.

This creates an integrated streaming amplifier within the Classic Hub enclosure while retaining the DAC and output upgrade path.

The most suitable loudspeaker depends on impedance, sensitivity, room size and preferred listening level.

Bi-Amplified and Tri-Amplified Systems

Two or three stereo power-amplifier cartridges can be fitted for passive bi-amplification or tri-amplification where the connected loudspeakers provide separate crossover inputs.

The loudspeaker terminal links must be removed and each amplifier channel connected to the correct crossover section.

In this conventional arrangement, the cartridge outputs remain full range and the passive crossover inside the loudspeaker continues to divide the frequencies.

Passive Multi-Amplification Is Not Automatically Exakt

Adding two or three amplifier cartridges does not by itself create an Exakt digital crossover.

Exakt operation requires a supported loudspeaker profile and the loudspeaker crossover to be configured or bypassed according to Linn's approved instructions.

Exakt Integrated Amplification

With compatible loudspeakers, Selekt DSM can use its internal cartridges as individual amplification channels controlled by the built-in Exakt engine.

Each drive unit or loudspeaker section receives its own digitally filtered signal before amplification.

This removes the conventional passive crossover from the signal path and allows Linn to apply drive-unit-specific crossover, phase and timing correction.

The loudspeakers must be specifically supported and professionally converted or configured for Exakt operation.

Classic Hub Casework

The Classic Hub uses a powder-coated folded-aluminium sleeve mounted on an 8mm-thick machined aluminium base.

The aluminium construction provides a rigid platform for the network, analogue, power-supply and optional amplifier circuitry.

An acrylic fascia contains the front display while maintaining the understated appearance of the enclosure.

Cut-Glass Control Dial

A smoked cut-glass dial is positioned centrally on the upper surface.

Hidden LEDs shine through the glass to indicate volume using a minimalist illuminated arc.

The dial can be used to adjust volume, control playback, select sources and interact with the system without opening the Linn App.

Six Programmable Smart Buttons

Six machined stainless-steel buttons provide one-touch access to selected functions.

They can be assigned to favourite albums, playlists, radio stations, streaming content or physical inputs.

This makes everyday operation straightforward for household members who do not want to browse through an application each time they listen.

Front Display

The high-resolution TFT display provides source, track, volume and operating information.

Linn specifies a display resolution of 1600 by 480 pixels.

Display behaviour and brightness can be managed as part of the system configuration.

Black or Silver Finish

Selekt DSM Classic Hub is available in Black or Silver.

The Black version uses a subtly textured dark powder-coated finish, while the Silver version provides a lighter flat-silver appearance.

Both versions use the same folded-aluminium construction, acrylic fascia, glass control dial, stainless-steel smart buttons and Utopik power supply.

Published Dimensions

Linn's customer-facing Selekt DSM specification lists Classic Hub at 355mm wide, 122.5mm high and 355mm deep.

Linn's separate technical documentation for the September 2024 Classic Hub revision lists a height of 119mm.

Allow at least the larger published height and additional space behind the enclosure for HDMI, network, analogue, speaker and mains cables.

Positioning and Ventilation

Place the Classic Hub on a rigid, level and stable equipment support.

Adequate ventilation must be provided, particularly where one or more internal power-amplifier cartridges are installed.

Do not cover the ventilation openings or install the product within sealed furniture without suitable airflow.

Additional clearance should be left behind the enclosure so that cables can bend naturally without pulling against the sockets.

Classic Hub or Majik DSM?

The Linn Majik DSM is supplied as a complete fixed all-in-one streaming amplifier.

It includes its DAC and stereo power amplification as standard, making it a simpler option for customers who want to connect one pair of passive loudspeakers without choosing separate modules.

Selekt DSM Classic Hub provides the more flexible platform, with different DAC levels, internal or external amplification, multiple cartridges, Exakt operation and optional surround expansion.

Linn Majik DSM

  • Complete fixed all-in-one configuration

Classic Hub or Edition Hub?

Classic Hub and Edition Hub use the same Selekt DSM modular concept but differ in their enclosure construction and standard positioning within the range.

Classic Hub uses folded aluminium casework mounted on a machined base.

The Linn Selekt DSM Edition Hub uses a more substantial all-machined aluminium enclosure with concealed joins and enhanced internal isolation.

The ideal choice depends on the required output configuration, DAC level, system budget and the value placed on the Edition enclosure.

Partnering Linn 119 and 150 Loudspeakers

Selekt DSM can form the centre of a complete Linn system with the Linn 119 standmount speakers or Linn 150 floorstanding speakers .

Both loudspeakers can begin in passive form and later be converted for a suitable Linn Exakt configuration.

The required Selekt amplifier cartridges depend on whether the system will use conventional passive operation, passive multi-amplification or a complete Exakt crossover arrangement.

Professional System Design

The flexibility of Selekt DSM makes correct system planning particularly important.

The output cartridge, DAC, number of amplifier channels, loudspeaker arrangement, subwoofer connection and television requirements must all be established before the unit is configured.

Audio T can assemble the required modules, update the software and configure the product through Linn Manage Systems.

Any future cartridge change must be carried out with the Selekt DSM disconnected from the mains and followed by the required software reconfiguration.

Cartridges Are Not User-Swappable Accessories

Selekt output and DAC modules should not be inserted or removed while the product is connected to the mains, even when it is in sleep mode.

Cartridge changes should be completed by Audio T or another experienced Linn retailer.
