The Bluesound NODE ICON is the flagship music streamer in the NODE range, combining the familiar flexibility of BluOS with considerably more ambitious digital-to-analogue conversion, balanced outputs, a substantial headphone amplifier and a large front display.

Its dual-mono ESS Sabre DAC design, balanced XLR connections and low-noise analogue circuitry make it particularly well suited to revealing amplifiers, active loudspeakers and systems where the streamer will also act as the main digital pre-amplifier.

HDMI eARC, Dolby Digital decoding, two-way Bluetooth, USB audio, multi-room playback and optional Dirac Live room correction add real flexibility. It does not contain power amplification or a phono stage, so passive loudspeakers and turntables require suitable additional equipment.

The Bluesound NODE ICON is a high-performance network music streamer, digital-to-analogue converter, digital pre-amplifier and headphone amplifier built around the BluOS streaming platform.

It can play music from compatible online services, internet radio, network storage, USB drives, computers, mobile devices and connected digital or analogue sources.

The NODE ICON Does Not Contain a Power Amplifier

The rear RCA and XLR connections provide line-level audio rather than speaker-level amplification.

Conventional passive loudspeakers require a suitable integrated amplifier or power amplifier between the NODE ICON and the speakers.

Alternatively, the NODE ICON can connect directly to compatible active loudspeakers that include their own amplification.

Dual-Mono ESS Sabre DAC Design

The NODE ICON uses two ESS Sabre ES9039Q2M digital-to-analogue converter chipsets within a dual-mono circuit design.

Separating the left and right channels within the conversion architecture helps reduce interaction between channels and supports the NODE ICON's balanced analogue output stage.

The fourth-generation ESS Hyperstream architecture is designed to provide wide dynamic range, low distortion and accurate conversion of high-resolution digital audio.

The NODE ICON also uses an ESS ES9826 analogue-to-digital converter for its stereo analogue input, allowing a connected line-level source to be incorporated into BluOS with low noise and distortion.

High-Resolution BluOS Music Streaming

BluOS provides access to compatible streaming services, internet radio, locally stored music and multi-room playback through one control platform.

Music can be selected and controlled through the BluOS Controller app for compatible iOS, Android, Windows and macOS devices.

The practical library size will also depend on network performance, metadata quality, album artwork and the storage device being used.

BluOS Multi-Room Audio

The NODE ICON can be grouped with compatible Bluesound and BluOS-enabled products to create a whole-home music system.

Grouped players can reproduce the same music in synchronisation, while separate rooms can play different sources at the same time.

The BluOS Controller app manages room grouping, playback queues, volume, source selection, streaming services and player settings.

Compatible BluOS products are available from Bluesound and selected partner manufacturers, allowing the platform to be incorporated into a wide range of Hi-Fi and installed-audio systems.

Balanced XLR and RCA Analogue Outputs

The NODE ICON provides one pair of balanced XLR outputs and one pair of unbalanced RCA outputs.

Both can be configured for variable-level operation when the NODE ICON is being used as a pre-amplifier or fixed-level operation when connected to a conventional integrated amplifier or separate pre-amplifier.

The XLR and RCA outputs can be used simultaneously, allowing the NODE ICON to feed more than one suitable line-level component.

Take Care When Using Fixed Output Level

Fixed output bypasses the NODE ICON's normal volume adjustment and sends a full-level signal to the connected equipment.

Fixed mode is suitable when volume is controlled by an integrated amplifier or separate pre-amplifier.

When connecting directly to a power amplifier or active loudspeaker, variable output should normally be selected and the volume reduced before playback begins.

Optical, Coaxial and USB Digital Outputs

External digital-to-analogue converters and suitably equipped amplifiers can be connected through optical Toslink, coaxial SPDIF or USB Audio 2.0.

Optical and coaxial connections provide straightforward compatibility with a wide range of Hi-Fi DACs and amplifiers.

The USB Type-A connection can operate as a USB Audio 2.0 output when a compatible external DAC is connected.

USB Audio Output Changes the Active Output

When a compatible external DAC is selected through USB Audio output, the NODE ICON's standard analogue, optical and coaxial outputs are disabled.

Disconnect the USB DAC or return the output selection to Default within the BluOS audio settings to reactivate the standard outputs.

Dirac Live processing is not currently available through the USB audio output.

USB-C Audio Input from a Computer

The rear USB-C input allows a compatible computer, iOS device or Android device to use the NODE ICON as an external audio device.

This provides a direct digital connection for music software, desktop audio and other compatible applications.

The USB-C connection is an audio input and is separate from the USB Type-A connection used for storage devices and compatible USB DAC output.

USB Music Storage

A compatible FAT32-formatted USB memory device or external drive can be connected to the USB Type-A port.

Music stored on the drive can then be indexed and selected through the BluOS Controller app using Local Server Mode.

The same USB Type-A connection is also used for USB audio output, so it cannot perform both jobs at the same time.

Analogue and Optical Inputs

A stereo RCA analogue input allows a CD player, tuner, cassette deck, external phono stage or another suitable line-level component to be played through the NODE ICON.

Connected analogue audio is converted into the digital domain using the internal ESS ES9826 analogue-to-digital converter before being processed and distributed through BluOS.

A Toslink optical input is also provided for compatible televisions, CD transports, games consoles and other digital sources.

The Analogue Input Is Not a Phono Stage

A standard moving magnet or moving coil cartridge cannot be connected directly to the NODE ICON's RCA analogue input.

A turntable requires a suitable built-in or external phono stage. The line-level output from that phono stage can then be connected to the NODE ICON.

The Bluesound HUB provides a dedicated moving magnet phono input when whole-home turntable streaming is required.

HDMI eARC for Television Sound

HDMI eARC allows a compatible television to send sound to the NODE ICON through a single HDMI cable.

Television apps, connected video sources and games consoles can therefore use the main Hi-Fi system without requiring a separate optical connection.

HDMI CEC allows compatible television remotes to control basic functions such as volume and standby, depending on the settings and equipment being used.

Dolby Digital Decoding

The NODE ICON supports Dolby Digital and can convert a compatible multi-channel Dolby Digital soundtrack for playback through a two-channel system.

This is useful when watching television, films or games through a conventional stereo amplifier and pair of loudspeakers.

The NODE ICON Is Not an AV Receiver

The NODE ICON does not provide multi-channel speaker terminals, power amplification or full surround-sound processing.

It is designed primarily for stereo playback and downmixes compatible Dolby Digital content for a two-channel system.

Customers requiring Dolby Atmos, centre channels or surround speakers should consider a dedicated home cinema amplifier or compatible Bluesound soundbar system.

Dirac Live Room Correction Ready

The NODE ICON is compatible with Dirac Live room correction.

Dirac Live measures the interaction between the loudspeakers and listening room before creating correction filters intended to improve tonal balance, imaging and low-frequency control.

The loudspeakers should still be positioned carefully before room correction is measured and applied.

Dirac Live Requires Additional Purchases

A Dirac Live licence is not included with the NODE ICON and must be purchased separately from Dirac.

Calibration also requires a compatible measurement microphone. Bluesound's optional Room Calibration Kit includes a suitable microphone and USB adapter.

Dirac Live works with the NODE ICON's RCA, XLR, optical and coaxial outputs, but not with USB audio output.

THX AAA Headphone Amplifier

Two full-size 6.3mm headphone sockets are powered by THX AAA headphone amplifier technology.

Feed-forward error-correction circuitry is designed to reduce noise and distortion while maintaining a linear response across a wide range of headphone loads.

The two sockets are positioned on opposite sides of the front panel, helping keep the headphone cable clear of the central display and touch controls.

The front-mounted 5-inch display shows album artwork, track information, input details, volume and system status.

It is a display rather than a touchscreen. Detailed browsing, setup and system configuration are handled through the BluOS Controller app.

The glass front panel and black anodised aluminium enclosure give the NODE ICON a more substantial appearance than the standard NODE and NODE NANO.

Proximity-Sensing Touch Controls

A touch-sensitive control panel is positioned on the top of the enclosure.

A proximity sensor illuminates the controls as a hand approaches, providing quick access without leaving the panel permanently illuminated.

Network streaming through BluOS will normally provide the most consistent route for high-resolution music playback.

Ethernet and Dual-Band Wi-Fi

The NODE ICON can connect to the home network using Gigabit Ethernet or dual-band Wi-Fi 5.
