The Bluesound POWERNODE N331 is a particularly versatile just-add-speakers system, combining BluOS music streaming, powerful DirectDigital amplification, television connectivity and genuine three-channel front-speaker support within one compact enclosure.
In a conventional stereo system it delivers 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms. Add a compatible centre speaker and it can instead provide 80 watts to each of the left, centre and right channels, giving television dialogue a properly anchored position without requiring a full-size AV receiver.
HDMI eARC, Dolby Digital decoding, USB-C computer audio, analogue and optical inputs, THX AAA headphone amplification and wireless Bluesound surround options make this far more than a simple streaming amplifier. It does not include a phono stage, DTS decoding or currently active Dirac Live room correction, so those requirements need to be considered before purchase.
Bluesound POWERNODE N331 Wireless Music Streaming Amplifier
The Bluesound POWERNODE N331 combines a high-resolution BluOS music streamer, digital pre-amplifier and DirectDigital power amplifier within one compact component.
Simply connect a pair of suitable passive loudspeakers and the home network to create a complete music system with access to compatible streaming services, internet radio, network storage, USB music libraries, Apple AirPlay 2, Bluetooth and BluOS multi-room playback.
HDMI eARC and Dolby Digital support allow the POWERNODE to become the centre of a combined music and television system.
Unlike most compact stereo amplifiers, the N331 also provides a dedicated centre-channel speaker output, allowing it to power a left, centre and right front-speaker arrangement without a separate AV receiver.

Just Add Speakers
The POWERNODE contains the source, control system and amplification required to create a complete Hi-Fi system.
Unlike a standalone network streamer such as the
Bluesound NODE
,
it can drive suitable passive loudspeakers directly through its rear binding posts.
Music selection, source control, volume, tone settings and multi-room grouping are handled through the BluOS Controller app.
The compact format reduces the number of separate components and cables required while still allowing conventional speakers, a television, physical audio sources, headphones and a subwoofer to be incorporated.
DirectDigital Amplification
The POWERNODE N331 uses Bluesound's DirectDigital amplification platform with Gallium Nitride output technology.
Digital music remains within the digital signal path through much of the processing and amplification chain, helping reduce the number of separate conversion stages required before the signal reaches the loudspeakers.
The amplifier is rated at 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms when operating as a conventional two-channel stereo amplifier.
When the centre-channel output is enabled, it provides 80 watts to each of the left, centre and right speakers into 8 ohms.

Power Output Changes in Three-Channel Mode
The quoted 100 watts per channel applies when the POWERNODE is driving two speakers.
When the centre speaker output is enabled, the rated output becomes 80 watts across each of the left, centre and right channels into 8 ohms.
The connected speakers should still be suitably matched for impedance, sensitivity, room size and required listening level.
Loudspeaker Matching
The POWERNODE can drive a broad range of conventional standmount and floorstanding loudspeakers.
The quoted wattage should not be considered in isolation. Loudspeaker impedance, sensitivity, cabinet size, room dimensions and typical listening volume all affect the final result.
More sensitive loudspeakers will normally achieve higher listening levels with less amplifier power, while speakers with difficult impedance characteristics may place greater demands on the amplifier.

High-Resolution BluOS Music Streaming
BluOS brings compatible music services, internet radio, network storage, USB libraries and multi-room playback together within one control platform.
The BluOS Controller app is available for compatible iOS, Android, Windows and macOS devices.
The POWERNODE uses a quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor running at 1.8GHz per core to manage high-resolution playback, app control, source switching, library indexing and multi-room synchronisation.
Software updates are delivered through the network, allowing Bluesound to maintain the operating system and update compatible integrations over time.

Play Music from Network Storage
Music stored on a compatible computer or network-attached storage device can be indexed and played through BluOS.
Server Message Block network sharing supports libraries containing up to approximately 200,000 files.
Practical library size and browsing performance will also depend on the network, storage hardware, metadata, folder structure and album artwork.
USB Music Storage
A compatible FAT32 or NTFS-formatted USB memory stick or external drive can be connected to the USB Type-A port.
Music stored on the drive can then be indexed and selected through BluOS Local Server Mode.
This provides access to a local music collection without requiring a separate computer or network-attached storage device to remain switched on.
The USB Type-A Port Is for Music Storage
Unlike the USB connection on current Bluesound NODE streamers, the POWERNODE's USB Type-A port is not specified as a USB digital output for an external DAC.
It is intended for compatible external music storage and BluOS Local Server Mode.
USB-C Audio Input
A dedicated USB-C audio input allows a compatible computer, iOS device or Android device to use the POWERNODE as an external audio system.
This provides a direct digital connection for desktop music software, computer audio and compatible mobile applications.
The USB-C audio input is separate from the USB Type-A storage connection.
Source selection and playback volume remain controlled through the POWERNODE and BluOS system.
Stereo RCA Analogue Input
A conventional stereo RCA line-level input allows equipment such as a CD player, tuner, cassette deck or external phono stage to be connected.
The connected source can be played through the local loudspeakers or shared with compatible BluOS players in other rooms.
Input naming and source settings can be adjusted through the BluOS Controller app.
The RCA Input Is Not a Phono Stage
A moving magnet or moving coil cartridge cannot be connected directly to the POWERNODE.
A turntable requires a suitable built-in or external phono stage. The line-level output from that phono stage can then be connected to the stereo RCA input.
The
Bluesound HUB
includes a dedicated moving magnet phono input and can share a turntable through a compatible BluOS system.
Combined Analogue and Optical Input
A separate 3.5mm combination socket can accept either a stereo analogue signal or a Mini Toslink optical digital connection.
This can accommodate another line-level source or a compatible digital product such as a CD transport, television, games console or media player.
A Mini Toslink adaptor is included for use with a conventional optical cable.
One Combination Input Source at a Time
The 3.5mm socket is shared between analogue and optical operation.
It cannot accept an analogue source and an optical source simultaneously.
HDMI eARC for Television Sound
HDMI eARC allows a compatible television to send sound to the POWERNODE through a single HDMI cable.
Television apps, set-top boxes, disc players and games consoles connected to the television can therefore use the main loudspeaker system.
HDMI CEC allows compatible television remotes to control functions such as volume and standby, depending on the television and complete system configuration.
Correct operation may require eARC, CEC and digital-audio settings to be enabled within the television menus.
Dolby Digital Decoding
The POWERNODE supports Dolby Digital soundtracks received through HDMI eARC.
In a three-channel configuration, compatible left, centre and right information can be directed to the corresponding passive speakers.
A connected subwoofer can receive the low-frequency effects channel from compatible Dolby Digital material.
Compatible wireless Bluesound speakers can also be added as rear channels within a BluOS home cinema group.
DTS Is Not Supported
The POWERNODE supports Dolby Digital but does not provide DTS decoding.
A television, disc player or video source sending an unsupported DTS bitstream may produce no sound.
Where possible, configure the source or television to provide Dolby Digital or a compatible PCM signal instead.
The POWERNODE Is Not a Full AV Receiver
The N331 provides three amplified front channels rather than the full bank of amplified outputs found on a conventional multi-channel AV receiver.
Rear surround speakers must be compatible Bluesound products connected wirelessly through a BluOS home cinema group.
The POWERNODE does not support Dolby Atmos height channels, DTS decoding or independently wired rear loudspeakers.
Dedicated Centre-Channel Output
The N331 provides a dedicated pair of binding posts for a conventional passive centre speaker.
The centre channel can improve dialogue focus by anchoring voices to the television rather than creating a phantom centre image between the left and right speakers.
The centre output must be enabled within the POWERNODE's BluOS audio settings.
Compatible Dolby Digital material contains dedicated centre-channel information. Ordinary two-channel music does not, so the centre speaker will normally remain silent unless stereo-surround processing is enabled.
Centre-Channel Operation Depends on the Source
A centre speaker will not automatically receive audio from every programme or music source.
Genuine Dolby Digital material can provide a dedicated centre channel, while ordinary two-channel sources require the optional stereo-surround upmixing setting if sound is wanted from the centre speaker.
Television and source-device audio settings may need to be adjusted to ensure a compatible Dolby Digital signal reaches the POWERNODE.
Wireless Rear Surround Speakers
A pair of compatible Bluesound wireless speakers can be bonded to the POWERNODE as rear surround channels.

The speakers are configured as part of a fixed BluOS home cinema group rather than being added as ordinary multi-room players.
Dolby Digital material can then be distributed to the front and rear channels, creating a compact five-channel system without running speaker cables from the POWERNODE to the back of the room.
Wired and Wireless Subwoofer Options
A dedicated mono RCA output allows a compatible powered subwoofer to be connected by cable.
The BluOS audio settings provide subwoofer level and crossover controls to help blend the subwoofer with the main loudspeakers.
The
Bluesound PULSE SUB+
can also connect wirelessly within a compatible Bluesound system.
A wired connection will normally provide the most predictable result where a suitable cable route is available.
Subwoofer Output Must Be Enabled
The subwoofer output and crossover settings are managed through the BluOS audio menu.
If the subwoofer setting is switched off, the dedicated output will not provide audio.
Dirac Live Ready
The POWERNODE N331 is designed to support Dirac Live room-correction technology.
Dirac Live measures the interaction between the loudspeakers and listening room before creating correction filters intended to improve tonal balance, imaging and low-frequency control.
Loudspeakers should still be positioned carefully before any electronic room correction is measured and applied.
Dirac Live Is Not Currently Active on the N331
Bluesound currently describes Dirac Live support for the POWERNODE N331 as being available through a future software update.
Until Bluesound releases that update, a Dirac licence and calibration microphone cannot be used to activate room correction on this model.
Once support becomes available, a suitable Dirac Live licence and compatible measurement microphone are expected to be separate purchases.
THX AAA Headphone Amplifier
A full-size 6.3mm headphone socket is powered by THX AAA headphone amplifier technology.
Feed-forward error-correction circuitry is designed to reduce noise and distortion while maintaining a linear response across a broad range of headphone loads.
This provides a convenient wired listening option without requiring a separate headphone amplifier.

Wireless Bluetooth Headphones

Apple AirPlay 2

The POWERNODE operates as an AirPlay receiving device rather than transmitting its BluOS sources to separate AirPlay speakers.
Roon Ready
The POWERNODE can operate as a Roon Ready network endpoint within a compatible Roon system.
Music selection and library management are then handled through Roon while the POWERNODE provides streaming, processing and amplification.
A separate Roon subscription and compatible Roon server are required.
BluOS Multi-Room Audio
