Ortofon 2MR Red Low-Profile Moving Magnet Cartridge

Audio T Verdict

The Ortofon 2MR Red is an ideal starting point if you want the versatility of the 2M cartridge family but your turntable requires a lower-profile cartridge. Its specially developed housing is 3mm lower than a standard 2M, making it particularly useful with Rega and other tonearms where cartridge height can otherwise mean adding spacers beneath the arm.

Performance-wise, it delivers the familiar strengths of the Red platform: an Elliptical diamond, aluminium cantilever, 5.5mV moving magnet output and Ortofon's quad-coil generator with split pole pins.

Better still, the 2MR body is fully compatible with Ortofon's 2M styli, giving you an easy future upgrade route. Start with Red and you can move to a Blue stylus later without removing or realigning the cartridge body.

Ortofon 2MR Red

What Is the 2MR Series?

The 2MR range adapts Ortofon's 2M moving magnet platform for turntables where cartridge height can present a problem.

Rather than requiring the tonearm to be raised to accommodate a taller cartridge, Ortofon redesigned the cartridge housing itself.

The result is a body that sits 3mm lower than the standard 2M format.

Designed for Rega and Other Low-Profile Tonearms

Rega tonearms are one of the applications Ortofon specifically identifies for the 2MR range.

Many Rega arms use a fixed or largely fixed mounting height. Fitting a substantially taller cartridge can therefore alter the tonearm's working angle unless spacers are installed beneath the arm.

The 2MR housing has been developed to provide a more natural physical fit in these installations.

Why Cartridge Height Matters

The cartridge influences the angle at which the tonearm sits when the stylus is in the groove. The 2MR range reduces cartridge height at source rather than requiring you to compensate by raising the complete tonearm.

No Spacer Required in Suitable Installations

Ortofon describes the slim 2MR housing as integrating into low-profile turntables without requiring modifications or spacers beneath the tonearm.

Installation can therefore be completed using the normal two cartridge mounting screws.

Check Your Individual Turntable

Turntables can differ through platter upgrades, mats, tonearm changes and previous modifications. Although the 2MR format is specifically designed for low-profile applications such as Rega, it is still worth checking the geometry of the individual turntable before installation.

2MR Red or Standard 2M Red?

The key difference is physical fit rather than a completely different sound or performance level.

2M Red

  • Standard-height 2M body
  • Elliptical stylus
  • 5.5mV output
  • For conventional 2M installations

2MR Red

  • 3mm lower housing
  • Elliptical stylus
  • 5.5mV output
  • Designed for low-profile installations
  • 6g cartridge weight

If your tonearm readily accommodates the standard 2M body, the regular 2M Red remains appropriate. If cartridge height is a concern, the 2MR Red is the version designed specifically for the job.

Elliptical Diamond Stylus

The 2MR Red uses an Elliptical diamond with stylus radii of r/R 8/18µm.

An Elliptical profile uses different radii across its two axes, allowing it to follow finer groove modulation than a basic Spherical stylus.

It provides a useful balance of groove tracing, musical detail and relatively straightforward setup.

Why Elliptical?

Record grooves contain increasingly small and tightly packed variations, particularly at higher frequencies and towards the inner grooves of an LP.

The narrower tracing dimension of an Elliptical stylus helps follow these modulations accurately and makes the Red a sensible entry point into Ortofon's 2M range.

Aluminium Cantilever

The diamond is mounted on an aluminium cantilever.

The cantilever transfers the tiny physical movements traced from the record groove into the cartridge generator.

Quad-Coil Generator

The 2MR Red uses Ortofon's high-performance quad-coil motor system.

This works with the company's split pole pin technology to generate the cartridge's electrical output while maintaining good channel accuracy.

Split Pole Pin Technology

Ortofon's split pole pins are designed to reduce eddy-current losses within the moving magnet generator.

The technology allows the Red and Blue platform to achieve a strong 5.5mV output while maintaining accurate signal reproduction.

OFC Coil Wire

The 2MR Red uses OFC, or oxygen-free copper, coil wire.

This is combined with quad coils and split pole pins in the Red generator system.

5.5mV Moving Magnet Output

The 2MR Red produces 5.5mV at 1kHz and 5cm/sec.

This healthy moving magnet output makes it straightforward to partner with conventional MM phono stages.

You do not need the substantially higher gain required by a low-output moving coil cartridge.

Which Phono Stage Do I Need?

The 2MR Red is a moving magnet cartridge and is designed for a normal MM phono input.

Ortofon specifies a recommended load resistance of 47kOhm and total load capacitance of 150 to 300pF.

Moving Magnet Made Easy

Most conventional MM phono stages use 47kOhm loading. If your phono stage offers adjustable capacitance, the manufacturer's 150 to 300pF recommendation gives you a useful target for the complete tonearm cable and phono-stage combination.

70µm Tracking Ability

Ortofon specifies a tracking ability of 70µm at 315Hz.

This describes the stylus assembly's ability to remain in stable contact with demanding groove modulation without mistracking.

Accurate alignment, tracking force and anti-skate all contribute to achieving the intended performance.

20µm/mN Compliance

Dynamic lateral compliance is specified at 20µm/mN.

Compliance describes the flexibility of the cartridge suspension and forms part of the relationship between cartridge and tonearm effective mass.

1.8g Recommended Tracking Force

The current 2M Red stylus specification gives the following tracking-force range:

  • Minimum: 1.6g / 16mN
  • Recommended: 1.8g / 18mN
  • Maximum: 2.0g / 20mN

For normal installation, begin at Ortofon's recommended 1.8g.

Don't Deliberately Under-Track

A lighter tracking force is not automatically kinder to your records. If the stylus begins to mistrack, both distortion and groove stress can increase. Keep the cartridge within Ortofon's specified range.

20-Degree Tracking Angle

The Red stylus assembly uses a 20-degree tracking angle.

Maintaining sensible tonearm geometry is therefore important, and this is precisely where the reduced-height 2MR body benefits fixed-height tonearms.

6g Cartridge Weight

The complete 2MR Red weighs 6g.

This should be taken into account when balancing the tonearm and setting the final 1.8g tracking force.

Standard Half-Inch Mounting

The 2MR Red uses conventional half-inch mounting.

It attaches using the normal two-screw cartridge arrangement, providing broad compatibility with suitable tonearms while retaining the reduced height of the 2MR body.

Replaceable 2M Red Stylus

The direct replacement stylus is the Ortofon Stylus 2M Red.

This uses the same Elliptical 8/18µm profile, 20µm/mN compliance and 1.8g recommended tracking force.

The stylus assembly can be replaced without removing the complete cartridge body from the tonearm.

100% Compatible With 2M Styli

Ortofon explicitly states that the 2MR cartridge housing is 100% compatible with all 2M styli.

This gives the 2MR Red an unusually flexible upgrade path, from a straightforward replacement Red stylus right through to more sophisticated profiles further up the 2M family.

An Easy Upgrade Path

Start with the 2MR Red and you don't necessarily need to replace the whole cartridge when you're ready for more. The most natural first upgrade is the 2M Blue stylus, which fits the existing Red generator body and introduces a Nude Elliptical diamond.

2MR Red to 2MR Blue Upgrade

Red and Blue share the same broad generator family, making the Blue stylus the most straightforward upgrade for a 2MR Red.

2M Red Stylus

  • Elliptical diamond
  • r/R 8/18µm
  • 70µm tracking ability
  • 20µm/mN compliance
  • 1.8g recommended tracking force

2M Blue Stylus

  • Nude Elliptical diamond
  • r/R 8/18µm
  • 80µm tracking ability
  • 20µm/mN compliance
  • 1.8g recommended tracking force

The Blue's nude diamond reduces unnecessary moving mass and increases the manufacturer's specified tracking ability, without requiring you to replace the low-profile cartridge body.

What About Bronze and Black Styli?

Ortofon confirms physical compatibility between the 2MR platform and all 2M styli.

However, Bronze and Black cartridges use a higher-specification generator family than Red and Blue.

So while a Bronze, Black or Black LVB 250 stylus will fit, using one on a Red body does not create exactly the same complete cartridge as buying the corresponding 2MR Bronze or Black.

Compatible Doesn't Always Mean Identical

All 2M styli fit the 2MR body, but Ortofon uses different generator specifications within the range. Red to Blue is the natural stylus-only upgrade. If you are considering a much larger jump to Bronze or Black, Audio T can advise whether replacing the complete cartridge makes more sense.

2MR Red or 2MR Blue?

2MR Red

  • Elliptical stylus
  • 70µm tracking ability
  • 5.5mV output
  • 1.8g recommended tracking force
  • Entry point into 2MR

2MR Blue

  • Nude Elliptical stylus
  • 80µm tracking ability
  • 5.5mV output
  • 1.8g recommended tracking force
  • Higher-resolution Red/Blue platform

The Red is the more affordable entry point, while Blue gives you the more sophisticated Nude Elliptical stylus from the outset.

Ideal for a Rega Cartridge Upgrade

The 2MR Red makes particular sense if you want to move away from a factory-fitted cartridge on a compatible Rega turntable while maintaining sensible tonearm geometry.

Its reduced-height body avoids trying to force a normal-height 2M into an application for which it was not originally designed.

The interchangeable stylus system also means the initial cartridge purchase can form the basis of future upgrades.
