What Is the 2MR Series?
The 2MR range adapts Ortofon's 2M moving magnet platform for turntables where cartridge height can present a problem.
Rather than requiring the tonearm to be raised to accommodate a taller cartridge, Ortofon redesigned the cartridge housing itself.
The result is a body that sits 3mm lower than the standard 2M format.
Designed for Rega and Other Low-Profile Tonearms
Rega tonearms are one of the applications Ortofon specifically identifies for the 2MR range.
Many Rega arms use a fixed or largely fixed mounting height. Fitting a substantially taller cartridge can therefore alter the tonearm's working angle unless spacers are installed beneath the arm.

Elliptical Diamond Stylus
The 2MR Red uses an Elliptical diamond with stylus radii of r/R 8/18µm.
An Elliptical profile uses different radii across its two axes, allowing it to follow finer groove modulation than a basic Spherical stylus.
It provides a useful balance of groove tracing, musical detail and relatively straightforward setup.
Why Elliptical?
Record grooves contain increasingly small and tightly packed variations, particularly at higher frequencies and towards the inner grooves of an LP.

Most conventional MM phono stages use 47kOhm loading. If your phono stage offers adjustable capacitance, the manufacturer's 150 to 300pF recommendation gives you a useful target for the complete tonearm cable and phono-stage combination.
70µm Tracking Ability
Ortofon specifies a tracking ability of 70µm at 315Hz.
This describes the stylus assembly's ability to remain in stable contact with demanding groove modulation without mistracking.

20µm/mN Compliance

Don't Deliberately Under-Track
A lighter tracking force is not automatically kinder to your records. If the stylus begins to mistrack, both distortion and groove stress can increase. Keep the cartridge within Ortofon's specified range.

What About Bronze and Black Styli?
Ortofon confirms physical compatibility between the 2MR platform and all 2M styli.
However, Bronze and Black cartridges use a higher-specification generator family than Red and Blue.
So while a Bronze, Black or Black LVB 250 stylus will fit, using one on a Red body does not create exactly the same complete cartridge as buying the corresponding 2MR Bronze or Black.
Compatible Doesn't Always Mean Identical
