Elliptical Stylus
The 2M Red uses an Elliptical diamond stylus with a specified tip radius of r/R 8/18µm.
An Elliptical profile has different radii across its two axes, allowing it to follow finer groove modulation than a basic spherical stylus.
This gives the Red useful detail retrieval and tracking performance while remaining relatively forgiving to set up.
Why Stylus Shape Matters

Ortofon specifies a tracking ability of 70µm at 315Hz.
Good tracking helps the stylus remain in stable contact with the groove during more demanding musical passages rather than losing control and introducing mistracking distortion.
Correct cartridge alignment, tracking force and anti-skate all contribute to achieving the intended performance.
Quad-Coil Moving Magnet Generator
The 2M Red uses a quad-coil moving magnet generator incorporating Ortofon's split pole pin technology.
The coil system uses oxygen-free copper wire and produces a healthy 5.5mV output.
That means the Red works with conventional MM phono stages and the moving magnet inputs found on many integrated amplifiers.
Split Pole Pin Technology
Split pole pins are one of Ortofon's key technologies within the 2M generator.

Which Phono Stage Do I Need?
The 2M Red requires a moving magnet, or MM, phono input. If your amplifier already has an MM phono input, you may already have everything required. A separate phono stage can still provide a worthwhile upgrade as the rest of the turntable system develops.
47kOhm Loading
Recommended load resistance is 47kOhm, the standard input resistance used by most moving magnet phono stages.
Ortofon recommends total load capacitance between 150 and 300pF.
This includes the tonearm wiring, interconnect and phono-stage input capacitance.
1.8g Recommended Tracking Force
Ortofon specifies the following tracking-force range:

Lighter Tracking Isn't Automatically Safer
Don't deliberately set the 2M Red below Ortofon's specified tracking-force range in an attempt to reduce record wear. A cartridge that is mistracking can place greater stress on the groove than one operating correctly at the manufacturer's recommended setting.
20µm/mN Compliance
Dynamic lateral compliance is specified at 20µm/mN.
Compliance describes how readily the stylus suspension moves and is one of the factors involved when matching a cartridge mechanically to a tonearm.
The overall size and weight of the 2M Series have been designed around compatibility with many commonly used modern turntables.
22dB Channel Separation
The 2M Red has a specified channel separation of 22dB at 1kHz.
Channel balance is specified at 1.5dB at 1kHz.

Ortofon currently specifies the 2M Red's response across 20Hz to 20kHz at +3 / -1dB.
It is worth using that current manufacturer figure rather than older published specifications that may still appear elsewhere online.

The standard 2M Red weighs 7.2g.
This falls within the adjustment range of a large number of conventional counterweighted tonearms, although compatibility should always be checked if the turntable uses an unusual mounting arrangement or restricted counterweight range.

The Easy Red-to-Blue Upgrade
One of the best features of owning a 2M Red is that you don't have to replace the complete cartridge to move up to Blue performance.
Ortofon officially recommends the Stylus 2M Blue as an upgrade for the 2M Red.
The original Red cartridge body stays fitted to the tonearm and only the stylus assembly is changed.
No Cartridge Realignment Required
Ortofon specifically describes the Blue stylus upgrade from a Red as requiring no cartridge realignment. Because the cartridge body hasn't moved, its overhang and offset remain unchanged. You should still check tracking force after changing the stylus.
