Audio T Verdict
The Ortofon 2M Blue has earned its popularity for good reason. It keeps all the practical advantages of the 2M Red, including a healthy moving magnet output and replaceable stylus, but swaps the bonded Elliptical diamond for a Nude Elliptical design that can retrieve noticeably more information from the groove.
That makes it one of our favourite sensible cartridge upgrades. It is sophisticated enough to show you what a better turntable, phono stage and record pressing can do, without demanding the sort of setup precision or partnering equipment associated with considerably more exotic cartridges.
If you already own a 2M Red, the Blue is even more appealing because you don't necessarily need to replace the complete cartridge. Ortofon officially supports fitting a 2M Blue stylus directly to the Red body, making it one of the simplest worthwhile upgrades in vinyl playback.
Ortofon 2M Blue
The 2M Blue is a moving magnet cartridge designed as the natural step up from Ortofon's hugely popular 2M Red.
Its key upgrade is a Nude Elliptical diamond stylus, which reduces unnecessary moving mass compared with the bonded stylus used by the Red and allows the cartridge to trace finer information from the record groove.

The Sweet Spot for Many Vinyl Systems
The 2M Blue occupies a very useful position within Ortofon's moving magnet range.
It offers a genuine improvement over entry-level cartridges without immediately moving into the more demanding Fine Line and Shibata profiles used further up the 2M family.
For a good mid-range turntable, or as the first substantial cartridge upgrade on an existing deck, that balance of performance, compatibility and straightforward ownership makes a great deal of sense.
Nude Elliptical Stylus
The defining feature of the 2M Blue is its Nude Elliptical diamond stylus.
The term 'nude' means that the diamond itself forms the stylus rather than a small diamond tip being bonded to a separate metal shank.
Reducing this additional mass allows the stylus assembly to respond more readily to the tiny movements encoded in the groove.
Why Nude Matters
A phono cartridge is dealing with extraordinarily small mechanical movements. Anything that reduces unnecessary mass at the stylus end of the cantilever can help it respond more accurately as groove modulation changes.
The 2M Blue therefore retains an Elliptical profile but executes it in a more sophisticated way than the 2M Red's bonded diamond.
Ortofon describes the result as providing greater dynamics, resolution, openness and detail compared with the Red.
2M Red Owner? This Is the Easy Upgrade
If you already have a 2M Red cartridge, you can fit a genuine Ortofon 2M Blue replacement stylus directly to the existing cartridge body. Because the cartridge itself stays fixed in position, changing the stylus does not require you to realign the complete cartridge afterwards.
Elliptical Groove Contact
Ortofon specifies the Nude Elliptical stylus with a tip radius of r/R 8/18µm.
An Elliptical stylus has different front-to-back and side-to-side radii, allowing it to follow higher-frequency groove modulation more accurately than a basic spherical profile.
It remains less extreme in its groove-contact geometry than the Fine Line and Shibata styli found further up the 2M range, which also makes the Blue relatively straightforward to set up.
80µm Tracking Ability
Tracking ability is specified at 80µm at 315Hz.
Good tracking allows the stylus to maintain reliable contact with the groove during more demanding passages, helping reduce mistracking distortion and preserving musical detail.
Correct tracking force, alignment and anti-skate remain important if you want the cartridge to perform as intended.
Aluminium Cantilever
The Nude Elliptical stylus is mounted to an aluminium cantilever.
This tiny component transfers movement from the stylus into the cartridge generator, so stiffness and low moving mass are important to accurate signal retrieval.
Quad-Coil Generator
The 2M Blue uses a moving magnet generator with quad coils and Ortofon's split pole pin technology.
The generator uses oxygen-free copper coil wire and produces a healthy 5.5mV output.
That relatively high output makes the 2M Blue compatible with conventional MM phono stages and the moving magnet inputs found on many integrated amplifiers.
Split Pole Pin Technology
Ortofon's split pole pin system is designed to improve the electrical behaviour of the moving magnet generator and help achieve a flatter frequency response.
It allows the 2M Series to retain the convenience and output level of moving magnet technology while addressing some of the electrical compromises traditionally associated with the format.
5.5mV Output
Output voltage is specified at 5.5mV at 1kHz, 5cm/sec.
This means you do not need a high-gain moving coil phono stage.
Simply use a suitable moving magnet phono input with the loading recommended by Ortofon.
Do I Need a New Phono Stage?
Not necessarily. The 2M Blue is designed for a normal MM phono input. If your amplifier already includes a good-quality moving magnet phono stage, it may be perfectly suitable. A better standalone phono stage can still be a worthwhile future upgrade because the Blue is capable of revealing improvements elsewhere in the analogue chain.
47kOhm Loading
Ortofon recommends a load resistance of 47kOhm, which is the standard input impedance used by most moving magnet phono stages.
Recommended load capacitance is 150 to 300pF.
The total capacitance includes the tonearm wiring, interconnect and phono-stage input, although many systems will already fall within a suitable range without requiring additional adjustment.
1.8g Recommended Tracking Force
Ortofon specifies a tracking-force range of:
- Minimum: 1.6g / 16mN
- Recommended: 1.8g / 18mN
- Maximum: 2.0g / 20mN
For most turntables, the manufacturer's recommended 1.8g is the correct starting point.
Tracking Too Light Is Not Better
Do not deliberately reduce tracking force below Ortofon's specified range in an attempt to protect your records. A stylus that mistracks can put greater stress on the groove than one running correctly at the manufacturer's recommended setting.
20µm/mN Compliance
The 2M Blue has a dynamic lateral compliance of 20µm/mN.
Compliance describes the flexibility of the stylus suspension and is one of the factors involved when matching a cartridge mechanically to a tonearm.
The 2M Series has been designed for compatibility with the dimensions and weights of a broad range of modern turntables.
25dB Channel Separation
Channel separation is specified at 25dB at 1kHz, with channel balance specified at 1.5dB.
These figures contribute to stable stereo reproduction and a clear sense of separation between information recorded in the left and right channels.
20Hz to 20kHz Frequency Response
Ortofon specifies the 2M Blue's frequency response from 20Hz to 20kHz at +2 / -1dB.
More important in everyday listening is the Blue's ability to retrieve more detail and dynamic information than the Red while remaining a relatively easy cartridge to live with.
7.2g Cartridge Weight
The standard 2M Blue weighs 7.2g.
That places it within the adjustment range of many modern counterweighted tonearms, although cartridge compatibility should always be checked if your turntable uses an unusual arm or mounting arrangement.
Standard Half-Inch Mounting
The standard 2M Blue uses conventional half-inch mounting.
The cartridge has threaded mounting holes, simplifying installation because separate fixing nuts are not required.
Ortofon also produces other versions of the 2M Blue for different tonearm arrangements.
2M, 2MR, Premounted or Verso?
The 2M Blue is available in several different mounting configurations.
Standard 2M Blue
- Half-inch mounting
- Designed for most conventional tonearms
- 7.2g cartridge weight
- Customer or dealer installation required
Other Variants
- 2MR Blue for lower-profile applications
- 2M Blue Premounted for suitable S-shaped arms
- 2M Blue Verso for bottom-mount headshells
- Same core Blue performance concept
What About Rega Turntables?
Ortofon specifically developed its 2MR range for turntables and tonearms that benefit from a lower cartridge body, including many Rega applications.
The reduced-height design can help achieve more appropriate tonearm geometry without requiring additional spacers beneath the tonearm.

2M Red vs 2M Blue
The Red and Blue share the same broad generator family, but the stylus makes the Blue a meaningful step forward.
2M Red
- Bonded Elliptical stylus
- 5.5mV moving magnet output
- Excellent starting point
- Replaceable stylus
- Can be upgraded to Blue
2M Blue
- Nude Elliptical stylus
- 5.5mV moving magnet output
- Higher tracking ability
- Greater detail and resolution
- Simple upgrade for Red owners
The important point is that upgrading from Red to Blue does not require changing the entire cartridge. Fit the Blue stylus to a Red body and you gain the key mechanical upgrade responsible for the Blue's improved performance.
Blue vs Bronze
The 2M Bronze takes another significant step by moving from a Nude Elliptical to a Nude Fine Line stylus and using the more sophisticated upper-tier 2M generator architecture.
The Blue is therefore not simply a cheaper Bronze. It belongs to the Red/Blue family, whereas the Bronze begins the next level of 2M cartridge construction.
Which one makes sense depends on the turntable and system. On many sensibly priced decks, the Blue offers an excellent balance without spending money on cartridge performance the rest of the turntable may struggle to fully exploit.
A Customer-Friendly Upgrade
One reason the 2M Blue is so easy to recommend is that it offers a very clear upgrade path.
Customers with a 2M Red can begin with a stylus change. If the complete cartridge requires replacement, the standard 2M Blue remains simple to install on most half-inch tonearms.
Replacement styli are readily available too, so normal stylus wear does not mean throwing away the generator body.
Replaceable Stylus
The correct replacement is the Ortofon Stylus 2M Blue.
Ortofon recommends it for:
- 2M Blue
- 2MR Blue
- 2M Blue Premounted
It is also officially recommended as an upgrade for:
- 2M Red
