Audio T Verdict
The WiiM Amp is an exceptional-value just-add-speakers system, combining high-resolution network streaming, capable stereo amplification, television connectivity, room correction and flexible subwoofer control in one compact enclosure.
AirPlay 2, Siri and Apple HomePod grouping give it a distinct advantage over the WiiM Amp Pro and Amp Ultra for an Apple-based household. Its 60W-per-channel output is sufficient for many passive speakers, provided sensitivity, impedance, room size and listening levels are considered carefully.
The Amp Pro offers a more advanced DAC, Post-Filter Feedback and newer wireless hardware, but the standard Amp remains an unusually complete and affordable route into music, multiroom audio and better television sound.
WiiM Amp Streaming Amplifier
The WiiM Amp combines a network music streamer, high-resolution DAC, pre-amplifier and Class D stereo power amplifier in one compact component.
Connect a suitably matched pair of passive loudspeakers and it can reproduce streamed music, television sound, network and USB libraries, Bluetooth audio and compatible analogue or optical sources.
Control is available through the WiiM Home app, supplied WiiM Voice Remote and multifunction front-panel rotary control.
60W-per-Channel Class D Amplification
A Texas Instruments TPA3255 Class D amplifier provides 60W per channel into 8 O or 120W per channel into 4 O.
This is sufficient for many stand-mount, floorstanding, in-wall, in-ceiling and outdoor passive speakers, although loudspeaker sensitivity, impedance, room size and preferred listening level remain important.
WiiM lists a minimum terminating impedance of 2.67 O, but unusually demanding, low-sensitivity or difficult-impedance speakers should still be discussed with Audio T before purchase.
ESS ES9018K2M DAC
Digital-to-analogue conversion is handled by an ESS ES9018K2M DAC, with a manufacturer website specification of 98dB signal-to-noise ratio and 0.0025% THD+N at 5W.
Network playback, optical input, HDMI ARC and USB audio output support resolutions up to 24-bit/192kHz where the source and selected service allow.
The stereo RCA line input is converted to digital at up to 24-bit/192kHz so the signal can use volume control, EQ, RoomFit and multiroom distribution.
High-Resolution Network Streaming
The WiiM Home platform provides access to compatible music services, internet radio, podcasts, network libraries and files stored on a connected USB drive.
Supported technologies include AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Google Cast Audio, Alexa Cast, Roon Ready and DLNA. Qobuz and other compatible services are also available through the WiiM Home platform.
Service availability can vary by region and some services require a separate subscription.
AirPlay 2 for Apple Systems
AirPlay 2 allows compatible iPhone, iPad and Mac devices to send audio to the WiiM Amp and provides Siri control through a suitable Apple device.
The amplifier can also join an AirPlay 2 group with compatible Apple HomePod speakers. This support is a key difference from the WiiM Amp Pro and Amp Ultra, which do not include AirPlay 2.
Wi-Fi 5 and Ethernet
Dual-band Wi-Fi 5 provides wireless network access on suitable 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks.
A 10/100 Ethernet connection is also available and may be preferable where the equipment position has weak or congested Wi-Fi reception.
The Amp can group with compatible WiiM products and supported Apple, Alexa or Google Cast devices for synchronised multiroom playback.
RoomFit Room Correction
WiiM RoomFit analyses how the connected speakers and room affect the frequency balance at the listening position.
Digital correction can then be applied to reduce the influence of particular room-related peaks and produce a more even response from the available speaker positions.
Room correction cannot compensate for unsuitable speakers or extremely poor placement, so the loudspeakers should still be positioned carefully before measurements are taken.
Per-Source EQ
The WiiM Home app includes preset profiles together with 10-band graphic and 10-band parametric equalisers for more detailed adjustment.
Separate settings can be retained for individual inputs, allowing television, streaming, optical, line-level and Bluetooth sources to use different tonal adjustments.
HDMI ARC and Optical Television Sound
HDMI ARC allows a compatible television to send sound to the WiiM Amp through an HDMI cable, creating a higher-quality alternative to a conventional soundbar.
HDMI ARC and optical accept stereo PCM at up to 24-bit/192kHz. The soundtrack is reproduced through the connected left and right speakers and an optional powered subwoofer.
Input auto-sensing can switch to the television or another connected source when an audio signal is detected.
Use Stereo PCM for Television Sound
The standard WiiM Amp does not decode Dolby Digital or DTS. Set the television, disc player or connected source to output stereo PCM if no sound is heard.
It is not supported as the front-channel hub in WiiM's modular Dolby Digital 5.1 system. Choose the WiiM Amp Pro or Amp Ultra if that expansion route is required.
Analogue Line Input
A stereo RCA line input allows a compatible CD player, tuner, cassette deck, external phono stage or another line-level source to be connected.
The input accepts up to 2Vrms and converts the signal to digital at up to 24-bit/192kHz for volume control, EQ, RoomFit and multiroom distribution.
A Phono Stage Is Required for Most Turntables
The RCA connection is a line-level input rather than a dedicated moving-magnet or moving-coil phono input.
A turntable must have a suitable phono stage built in or be connected through a separate external phono stage.
Powered and Wireless Subwoofer Options
A 2Vrms mono RCA output allows a compatible powered subwoofer to be added.
The WiiM Home app provides bass-management settings, including an adjustable crossover from 30Hz to 250Hz, to help integrate the subwoofer with the main speakers.
The Amp can also pair wirelessly with the WiiM Sub Pro through the WiiM Home app, providing more flexible placement without an RCA signal cable.
USB Library and USB Audio Output
The USB connection can read compatible FAT32, NTFS and EXT4 storage devices, making stored music available to the Amp and other compatible WiiM or DLNA products.
It can alternatively provide UAC 2.0 USB audio output to a compatible external DAC or amplifier at up to 24-bit/192kHz.
Speaker, USB and Bluetooth outputs are selected through the WiiM interface rather than operating as independent listening zones. The optional subwoofer output can remain active with the selected main output.
Two-Way Bluetooth 5.1
Bluetooth 5.1 can receive music from a compatible phone, tablet, computer or television using the SBC or AAC codec.
The connection is bidirectional, allowing the Amp to send audio to compatible Bluetooth headphones, earphones or wireless speakers.
There is no conventional wired headphone socket.
WiiM Voice Remote
The supplied Bluetooth remote provides standby, playback, volume, mute, source and four preset controls without requiring direct line of sight.
Its push-to-talk microphone supports compatible Alexa voice commands after the relevant account has been configured.
WiiM Amp or WiiM Amp Pro?
The standard Amp is the natural choice when AirPlay 2, Siri or HomePod grouping is required. It provides the same quoted 60W-per-channel output as the Amp Pro, together with RoomFit, HDMI ARC, USB, Roon Ready and flexible subwoofer control.
The Amp Pro adds Post-Filter Feedback, an ESS ES9038Q2M DAC, improved measured noise and distortion performance, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, Dolby Digital decoding and support for WiiM's modular 5.1 system. It does not support AirPlay 2.
