Acoustic Energy AE100² Standmount Speakers

Acoustic Energy AE100² Standmount Speakers

Audio T Verdict

The Acoustic Energy AE100² is a fine entry point into proper Hi-Fi speakers, offering an open, engaging and surprisingly substantial presentation from a compact and affordable cabinet.

Its long-throw paper mid/bass driver gives music useful punch and scale, while the soft-dome tweeter and Wide Dispersion Technology help produce a smooth, well-integrated sound across a reasonably broad listening area.

They are straightforward to partner, compact enough for smaller rooms and forgiving about whether they are used on stands or a sturdy shelf. Give the rear ports a little breathing room and the AE100² can sound considerably bigger than its dimensions or price suggest.

Acoustic Energy AE100² Standmount Speakers

The Acoustic Energy AE100² is a compact passive standmount and bookshelf speaker from the British-designed Acoustic Energy 100 Series.

It combines a 130mm long-throw paper-cone mid/bass driver with a 25mm soft fabric-dome tweeter, rear slot-shaped reflex port and carefully braced 15mm HDF enclosure.

The speakers are designed to deliver satisfying volume, bass weight and musical scale from a cabinet measuring only 290mm high.

Supplied as a pair, the AE100² requires a separate stereo amplifier and speaker cable.

Supplied as a Pair

The price shown is for one pair of passive AE100² speakers.

Amplification, speaker cable and stands are available separately.

130mm Paper-Cone Mid/Bass Driver

The AE100² uses a 130mm doped paper-cone driver to reproduce the midrange and bass.

Its ultra-high-force, long-throw motor system allows the cone to move through a relatively large distance, helping the compact speaker produce useful bass extension and strong volume levels.

Paper provides a useful combination of low mass and natural self-damping, allowing the driver to cover the vocal and instrumental midrange before handing over to the tweeter.

Acoustic Energy developed the driver alongside the tweeter and crossover so that the two units work together as a complete system rather than as unrelated components.

25mm Soft-Dome Tweeter

High frequencies are handled by a 25mm soft fabric-dome tweeter powered by a neodymium motor assembly.

The soft dome is designed to deliver clear and detailed treble without making the AE100² unnecessarily aggressive or tiring during longer listening sessions.

Its compact faceplate also allows the tweeter to sit close to the mid/bass driver, helping the sound from the two units integrate through the crossover region.

Wide Dispersion Technology

The tweeter is mounted within Acoustic Energy's Wide Dispersion Technology waveguide.

The shaped surround controls how high-frequency energy leaves the tweeter, helping create a broad and even spread of sound across the listening area.

This can make the AE100² easier to enjoy from more than one seat while helping the tweeter and mid/bass driver blend smoothly around the 2.9kHz crossover point.

Mid/Bass Driver

  • 130mm doped paper cone
  • Long-throw suspension
  • High-force motor system
  • Designed for useful bass from a compact cabinet
  • Covers both bass and midrange frequencies

Tweeter

  • 25mm soft fabric dome
  • Neodymium motor assembly
  • Wide Dispersion Technology waveguide
  • Designed alongside the mid/bass driver
  • 2.9kHz crossover frequency

Rear Slot-Shaped Reflex Port

A wide slot-shaped reflex port is positioned on the rear of the cabinet.

The port uses the movement of air inside the enclosure to reinforce the lower-frequency output of the mid/bass driver.

Its large cross-sectional area and shaped airflow path are designed to reduce turbulence, distortion and the audible chuffing that can affect smaller conventional ports.

Because the port faces backwards, the distance between the speaker and rear wall will affect the amount and balance of bass.

15mm HDF Cabinet

The enclosure is manufactured from 15mm High Density Fibreboard rather than conventional lower-density MDF.

HDF allows Acoustic Energy to use relatively thin cabinet walls while retaining useful mass and stiffness.

Carefully positioned internal bracing helps control cabinet vibration, allowing the drive units to contribute more of the sound heard in the room.

The compact dimensions make the AE100² suitable for smaller rooms, secondary systems, home offices and installations where larger speakers would dominate the available space.

Designed for Stands or a Sturdy Shelf

The AE100² can be used on suitable speaker stands or placed on a sturdy shelf or item of furniture.

Dedicated stands will normally provide the best stability and allow the tweeters to be positioned close to seated ear height.

A shelf can still work well where space is limited, but the surface should be rigid, level and deep enough to support the cabinet securely.

Avoid placing the speakers inside a tightly enclosed cabinet, as this can obstruct the rear port and exaggerate the bass.

Room Positioning

Begin with the speakers at least approximately 15cm from the rear wall, with both cabinets positioned the same distance from the main listening seat.

Moving them closer to the wall will normally add bass weight, while moving them further into the room may create a cleaner and more open balance.

Try to keep the speakers away from room corners and avoid placing one close to a side wall while the other sits in open space.

Small changes in position can make a noticeable difference, so adjust only one thing at a time and listen with several familiar recordings.

Toe-In and Stereo Imaging

A sensible starting point is to position the speakers facing forwards or angled gently towards the listening seat.

Increasing the toe-in may improve the focus of vocals and central images. Reducing it may produce a wider and more open soundstage.

Wide Dispersion Technology makes the AE100² relatively flexible, but both speakers should still use the same angle and remain level.

Amplifier Matching

Acoustic Energy specifies a sensitivity of 87dB and a nominal impedance of 6O.

The AE100² can therefore be partnered with a broad range of good-quality integrated amplifiers, streaming amplifiers and compact Hi-Fi systems.

The best match depends on room size, listening distance and how loudly the system will normally be used.

Power handling is rated at 120W, but amplifier quality and control are more important than choosing purely from a headline wattage figure.

Avoid Amplifier Clipping

A smaller amplifier driven beyond its clean operating range can produce distortion capable of damaging a loudspeaker.

Reduce the volume if the sound becomes hard, strained or obviously distorted.

Single-Wire Speaker Connections

Each AE100² uses one pair of speaker terminals for a straightforward single-wire connection to the amplifier.

The terminals accept suitable 4mm banana plugs, spade connectors or carefully prepared bare speaker cable.

Maintain the same polarity throughout the system, connecting the positive amplifier terminal to the positive speaker terminal and negative to negative.

Switch the amplifier off before connecting or changing speaker cables and check that no loose wire strands can create a short circuit.

Black, White or Walnut

The AE100² is available in Black, White or Walnut vinyl veneer.

The simple cabinet shape and magnetically attached slim cloth grille give the speaker a clean appearance with or without the grille fitted.

The grille can be removed carefully when the exposed driver arrangement is preferred.

Adding a Subwoofer

The AE100² offers impressive bass for its size, but customers wanting greater depth for electronic music, organ recordings or films can add a suitable active subwoofer.

The Acoustic Energy AE Sub provides adjustable crossover, level and phase controls for integration with a stereo or home cinema system.

The subwoofer should be adjusted to extend the speakers naturally rather than making every recording sound noticeably bass-heavy.
