Triangle Magellan Duetto 40th Anniversary Standmount Speakers - Pair

Audio T Verdict

The Triangle Magellan Duetto 40th is the smallest stereo loudspeaker in the Magellan 40th Anniversary range, but describing it as simply a scaled-down version of the larger Cello does it a disservice.

Duetto is designed specifically as a large two-way standmount, using one 25mm magnesium-dome horn tweeter and one 165mm natural-paper mid/bass driver in each curved cabinet. The mid/bass unit therefore has the difficult job of covering everything from deep bass up to the 3.1kHz crossover, rather than handing the lower midrange to a separate driver as the Cello does.

Triangle has put a considerable amount of engineering into making that work. The 165mm driver uses a cellulose-pulp diaphragm, progressive suspension and a lightweight polypropylene anti-vortex element with latex damping, allowing it to combine useful low-frequency extension with the speed and neutrality required through the vocal range.

The tweeter is the same fundamental Magellan 40th TZ2900PM-MG concept found higher in the range, with a magnesium-alloy dome, horn loading, phase plug and rear counter-cap. It is a substantially more sophisticated high-frequency assembly than simply fitting a metal dome into a conventional flat baffle.

Triangle currently specifies a 40Hz to 30kHz ±3dB bandwidth, 88dB sensitivity, 8-ohm nominal impedance and a 3.4-ohm minimum. Recommended amplifier power stretches from 30 to 200 watts into 8 ohms, so the Duetto can work with a broad range of quality amplification while still benefiting from an amplifier with good current delivery.

At 460mm high, 350mm deep and 16.8kg each, these are not small bookshelf speakers despite Triangle's terminology. Proper stands are essential if you want them positioned at the correct height and allowed to perform as intended.

Triangle's dedicated S08 stand is particularly interesting because the speaker can be locked securely to it, the stand can be mass loaded, cable routing is built into the rear and its centre spike uses Triangle's SPEC mechanical-energy system.

For someone who wants the engineering quality and scale of the Magellan range but either cannot accommodate a large floorstander or actively prefers the imaging and room flexibility of a serious standmount, the Duetto 40th is arguably one of the most interesting speakers Triangle makes.

The Standmount Magellan

Duetto is the standmount model within Triangle's Magellan 40th stereo range.

The principal stereo models progress through:

  • Duetto 40th - two-way standmount
  • Cello 40th - three-way floorstander
  • Quatuor 40th - larger three-way floorstander

The Duetto is not simply a Cello with the bass drivers removed. Its dedicated mid/bass unit has been developed specifically to reproduce a much wider frequency range.

Two-Way Design

Each speaker uses:

  • 1 x 25mm tweeter
  • 1 x 165mm mid/bass driver

The signal is divided between them at approximately 3.1kHz.

TZ2900PM-MG Magnesium Horn Tweeter

High frequencies are handled by Triangle's TZ2900PM-MG tweeter.

The Anniversary generation replaces the previous Magellan dome material with magnesium alloy.

Magnesium combines:

  • Low moving mass
  • High rigidity
  • Useful mechanical consistency

Horn Loading

The magnesium dome sits inside Triangle's horn assembly rather than radiating directly from a conventional flat faceplate.

The horn profile is designed to manage high-frequency directivity and acoustic loading.

Phase Plug

A phase plug is integrated into the high-frequency system.

Together with the horn geometry, Triangle uses it to help linearise the tweeter's response away from the central listening axis.

Rear Tweeter Counter-Cap

The tweeter motor also incorporates a rear counter-cap.

Triangle uses this to control the rear wave generated by the tweeter and reduce unwanted reflection behind the diaphragm.

165mm Natural-Paper Mid/Bass Driver

One 165mm driver handles both the midrange and low frequencies.

Its diaphragm is based on cellulose pulp rather than the SVA fibreglass sandwich construction used by the dedicated woofers in the Cello and Quatuor.

Why Paper?

Triangle has a long history of using paper-based diaphragms through the midrange.

In the Duetto, the cone needs to remain sufficiently light and controlled to reproduce voices naturally while also moving enough air to produce meaningful bass.

Progressive Suspension

The Duetto mid/bass uses what Triangle describes as a progressive suspension.

It is designed to integrate smoothly with the cone and support both midrange accuracy and the greater excursion required at low frequencies.

Anti-Vortex Cone

At the centre of the diaphragm sits an ultra-light polypropylene anti-vortex element.

Triangle applies latex damping material to help control irregularities towards the upper end of the driver's operating range.

40Hz to 30kHz Frequency Response

Triangle specifies:

40Hz – 30kHz ±3dB.

40Hz From a Standmount

A qualified 40Hz lower limit is substantial for a standmount using a single 165mm bass/mid driver.

It means a subwoofer is not automatically necessary for normal two-channel music listening.

Do You Need a Subwoofer?

For most music systems, possibly not.

A subwoofer becomes more relevant if you want:

  • Strong output below 40Hz
  • Home-cinema LFE reproduction
  • Deep electronic bass
  • Pipe-organ fundamentals
  • Independent control of low-frequency room modes

Front-Facing Bass Reflex Port

The Duetto uses a front-facing bass-reflex system.

This gives useful flexibility when positioning the speaker relative to the wall behind it.

Front Port Does Not Mean the Rear Wall Stops Mattering

All of the Duetto's low-frequency output interacts with the room.

Moving the speakers towards a rear wall or corner can still increase bass reinforcement and change tonal balance.

Triangle Wide-Venting Technology

The wider Magellan 40th platform uses Triangle's Wide-Venting approach to bass-reflex loading.

Internal and external flares are designed to control airflow and reduce turbulence that can otherwise become audible at high output.

Recommended for Rooms From 15 to 40m²

Triangle recommends the Duetto 40th for listening rooms between approximately:

15 and 40 square metres.

Room Size Is a Guide

A room's dimensions alone do not determine whether a speaker will work well.

Listening distance, room construction, furnishings, amplifier capability and required playback level all matter too.

88dB Sensitivity

Triangle specifies sensitivity at:

88dB/W/m.

This is lower than the Antal 40th and Cello 40th, so the Duetto does not produce quite as much output from the same small amount of amplifier power.

8-Ohm Nominal Impedance

The headline nominal impedance is:

8 ohms.

Triangle specifies a minimum impedance of approximately 3.4 ohms.

Minimum Impedance Matters

The amplifier does not see a constant 8-ohm load at every frequency.

Because impedance falls significantly lower, use a properly designed amplifier with good current capability rather than choosing purely by headline wattage.

Recommended Amplification: 30–200W

Triangle recommends:

30 to 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms.

You Do Not Need a 200W Amplifier

The upper limit is not a target.

A high-quality amplifier at the lower or middle part of Triangle's recommendation can make an excellent partner in an appropriately sized room.

80W Power Handling

Triangle specifies:

80W power handling.

This does not mean the Duetto requires an 80W amplifier. Triangle recommends amplifiers from 30 to 200W per channel into 8 ohms, with clean operation and sensible volume remaining more important than comparing wattage figures in isolation.

3.1kHz Crossover

Triangle specifies the crossover frequency at:

3100Hz.

The mid/bass therefore covers a very broad part of the audible spectrum before handing over to the horn tweeter.

Magellan 40th Crossover Components

The Magellan 40th crossover programme uses high-grade components selected by Triangle, including:

  • French MKP capacitors developed with SCR Audio
  • Low-inductance ceramic resistors
  • Large-section air-core coils

Steep Crossover Slopes

Triangle's Magellan crossover design uses slopes reaching up to 24dB per octave, matched to the natural behaviour of the drive units.

The company also works to linearise driver impedance around the crossover region to make the electrical load more controlled for the amplifier.

AudioQuest Internal Wiring

Internal wiring across the Magellan 40th range was developed with AudioQuest.

Triangle specifies a combination of:

  • Long-Grain Copper - LGC
  • Perfect-Surface Copper - PSC

Curved Multi-Layer Cabinet

The Duetto inherits the curved Magellan cabinet construction.

The enclosure sides are formed from successive layers of approximately 3mm high-density fibreboard.

The layers are moulded under tension to achieve the curved profile.

Why a Curved Cabinet?

Triangle uses the shape to reduce large parallel internal surfaces that can encourage standing waves.

The enclosure is also reinforced according to measurements of cabinet vibration and deformation.

250mm Wide, 460mm High

Each Duetto measures approximately:

  • Width: 250mm
  • Height: 460mm
  • Depth: 350mm

It is therefore much larger than many conventional compact bookshelf speakers.

16.8kg Per Speaker

Triangle specifies:

16.8kg net per speaker.

That substantial weight is another reason to use a proper speaker stand rather than an unsuitable shelf or lightweight piece of furniture.

Use Proper Speaker Stands

Correct stand height helps place the horn tweeter appropriately relative to seated ear level.

A good stand also provides:

  • Stable support
  • Freedom to adjust wall distance
  • Freedom to experiment with toe-in
  • Matching left and right height
  • Improved mechanical stability

Dedicated Triangle S08 Stand

The S08 was developed specifically for the Magellan Duetto 40th.

Triangle incorporates a locking system so the loudspeaker can be mechanically secured to the stand.

680mm S08 Stand Height

The dedicated S08 is approximately 680mm high before its spikes are fitted.

Combined with the Duetto's 460mm cabinet, this places the loudspeaker at a sensible height for seated listening.

Mass-Loadable S08

The stand columns are sealed so granular ballast or small steel ballast balls can be added.

Adding mass can increase stability and change the mechanical behaviour of the support.

SPEC Centre Spike

The S08 stands use three adjustable metal spikes.

The central spike incorporates Triangle's SPEC - Single Point Energy Conductor - concept, designed to provide a controlled route for mechanical energy towards the floor.

Cable Management

A rear cable-routing system is built into the S08, helping speaker cable run more discreetly down the stand.

S08 Footprint

The dedicated stand base measures approximately:

  • Width: 450mm
  • Depth: 420mm

Allow for this footprint when planning the final speaker position.

S08 Stands Are Sold Separately

The Magellan Duetto 40th speakers do not include the dedicated S08 stands as standard.

Alternative high-quality speaker stands may also be suitable, provided they offer the correct height, stability and top-plate support.

Counter-Spikes Supplied

Triangle supplies eight counter-spikes with the pair.

These provide a protective interface when using pointed supports on suitable hard-floor installations.

Protect Delicate Flooring

Do not place exposed metal points directly onto wood, laminate, tile or another delicate surface without suitable protection.

Use the supplied counter-spikes or another appropriate protective interface on hard floors.

Magnetic Grilles

Two magnetic protective grilles are supplied with the pair.

The magnetic fixing leaves the front baffle free of conventional grille pegs when the speakers are used uncovered.
