PMC Prodigy1 Magnetic Speaker Grilles (Pair)

Audio T Verdict

These optional PMC grilles provide a simple way to give the Prodigy1 a more discreet appearance while adding a useful barrier between the exposed drive units and everyday accidental contact.

They are shaped specifically for the Prodigy1 cabinet and attach using concealed magnets, so there are no clips, screws or tools to worry about. They can also be removed just as easily whenever you prefer to listen with the drivers exposed.

The pack contains two grilles, providing one for each speaker in a stereo pair.

PMC Prodigy1 Magnetic Speaker Grilles

The PMC Prodigy1 grilles are optional accessories designed specifically for the PMC Prodigy1 Standmount Speakers.

The standard Prodigy1 speakers are supplied with their 133mm natural-fibre driver and 27mm soft-dome tweeter exposed. These grilles allow owners to cover the front of each cabinet where a more understated appearance or some additional protection is preferred.

Supplied as a Pair

The pack includes two matching grilles:

  • One grille for the left Prodigy1 speaker
  • One grille for the right Prodigy1 speaker

Only one pack is therefore required for a standard stereo pair of Prodigy1 speakers.

Designed for the Prodigy1 Only

These grilles are shaped specifically for the PMC Prodigy1 standmount speaker.

They are not suitable for the Prodigy5, Prophecy1, twenty5i or other PMC loudspeakers.

Simple Magnetic Fitting

Concealed magnets hold each grille against the front of the speaker cabinet.

No tools, screws or permanent modifications are required. To fit a grille:

  1. Hold the grille by its outer frame.
  2. Align it carefully with the front of the Prodigy1 cabinet.
  3. Bring it gently towards the speaker until the magnets locate it.
  4. Check that the grille sits evenly and securely.

To remove it, hold the outer edges and pull it gently away from the cabinet.

Do Not Press Against the Fabric

Handle each grille by its frame rather than pressing against the cloth. Avoid pushing the grille towards the tweeter or midrange and bass driver during fitting or removal.

Black Fabric Finish

The black fabric complements the Prodigy1's Silk Black cabinet finish and gives the speaker a more discreet, furniture-friendly appearance.

The sculpted shape follows the position of the Prodigy1 drive units rather than covering the cabinet with a simple flat rectangular panel.

Additional Driver Protection

The grilles provide a useful first layer of protection against light accidental contact, dust and curious fingers.

They may be particularly useful in:

  • Shared family living rooms
  • Homes with young children
  • Rooms where the speakers are positioned near a walkway
  • Systems where a more discreet appearance is preferred
  • Installations where the speakers are used on furniture

Not Impact-Proof Protection

The grilles should not be treated as rigid protective covers. They cannot prevent damage caused by strong impacts, sharp objects, liquids, pets or excessive pressure.

The speakers should still be positioned on stable stands or furniture where they are unlikely to be knocked over.

Effect on Cabinet Depth

Fitting the optional grille adds approximately 10mm to the published depth of the Prodigy1 speaker.

This should be considered where the speakers are being positioned on shallow furniture or close to the edge of a stand or shelf.

Prodigy1 Without Grille

  • Cabinet depth: approximately 237mm
  • Drive units remain visible
  • Original open-baffle appearance

Prodigy1 With Grille

  • Approximate depth: 247mm
  • Drive units are concealed
  • More discreet front appearance

Listening With the Grilles Fitted

The grilles can be left fitted for everyday listening or removed whenever the exposed-driver appearance is preferred.

As room acoustics, positioning and personal preferences vary, it is worth comparing the speakers with the grilles fitted and removed before deciding which arrangement you prefer for critical listening.

Cleaning and Care

For normal care:

  • Remove the grilles from the speakers before cleaning
  • Use a clean, dry and soft brush for light dust
  • Handle each grille by its outer frame
  • Keep the fabric away from liquids and cleaning sprays
  • Do not apply excessive pressure to the frame or cloth
  • Store removed grilles flat and away from sharp objects

Do not use a wet cloth, solvent, furniture polish or household cleaning spray on the grille fabric.
