Linn Selekt DSM Edition Hub Dual Mono Organik Network Music Player and Pre-Amplifier

Linn Selekt DSM Edition Hub Dual Mono Organik Network Music Player and Pre-Amplifier

Audio T Verdict

The Linn Selekt DSM Edition Hub with Dual Mono Organik is a reference-quality network music player and pre-amplifier designed for use with external power amplification or compatible active loudspeakers.

Its Its defining feature is the use of two completely separate line-output cartridges, each fitted with its own mono Organik DAC. This gives the left and right channels dedicated digital-to-analogue conversion and analogue output circuitry rather than sharing one stereo DAC module.

Add the beautifully engineered Edition Hub enclosure, Utopik power supply, comprehensive analogue and digital connectivity, Space Optimisation and Linn's upgradeable Selekt platform, and this becomes a compelling control centre for a genuinely high-performance system.

Linn Selekt DSM Edition Hub Dual Mono Organik

The Linn Selekt DSM Edition Hub Dual Mono Organik is a high-performance network music player, DAC and pre-amplifier.

It combines Linn's premium Edition Hub enclosure with two single-channel line-output cartridges and two separate mono Organik DAC modules.

One cartridge and DAC handles the left channel, while the second handles the right. Each channel provides both an unbalanced RCA output and a balanced XLR output for connection to an external power amplifier or compatible active loudspeaker.

The product also includes Linn's Utopik power supply, extensive streaming support, moving magnet and moving coil phono stages, digital inputs, HDMI ARC, Exakt Link and Space Optimisation room-correction technology.

External Amplification Is Required

This is a line-output network music player and pre-amplifier. It does not include internal power amplification for passive loudspeakers.

Connect it to a suitable stereo power amplifier, two mono power amplifiers or compatible active loudspeakers.

Dual Mono Organik Architecture

A conventional stereo DAC module converts both the left and right channels on one circuit board.

This Dual Mono Organik configuration separates those channels across two output cartridges and two individual DAC modules.

One single-channel cartridge is assigned to the left output and the other to the right. Each cartridge has its own mono Organik conversion stage and analogue output circuitry.

This provides greater physical and electrical separation between the channels and allows each mono Organik DAC to devote its resources to one audio channel.

Linn Organik DAC

Organik is Linn's proprietary digital-to-analogue conversion architecture, designed and engineered in-house.

The DAC converts digital music data into the continuously varying analogue signal required by an amplifier and loudspeakers.

This conversion stage is critically important because timing errors, electrical noise or distortion introduced here become part of the signal passed to the rest of the system.

Organik combines Linn-designed digital processing with a discrete conversion and analogue output stage, giving Linn control over the complete signal path rather than relying on a conventional off-the-shelf DAC implementation.

Why Use Two Mono Organik DACs?

The mono Organik module is designed specifically for Linn's single-channel line-output cartridge.

Using one module per channel gives the left and right signals their own conversion hardware and output connections.

Linn positions Dual Mono Organik above the stereo Organik configuration within the Selekt DSM range.

The result is the highest-performance current analogue line-output configuration available for Selekt DSM.

Mono and Stereo Organik Modules Cannot Be Mixed

Mono Organik DACs can only be used with Linn's single-channel line-output cartridges.

They cannot be mixed with stereo Organik cartridges or with Standard and Katalyst DAC modules within the same Selekt DSM.

Cartridge and DAC changes must be completed and configured by an experienced Linn retailer.

RCA and Balanced XLR Outputs

Each mono line-output cartridge provides one RCA socket and one balanced XLR socket.

Both connections remain active simultaneously and can be used without one connection reducing the performance of the other.

The RCA output provides 2V RMS at Linn volume setting 80 with a specified output impedance of 300 O.

The balanced XLR output provides 4V RMS at volume setting 80 with a specified output impedance of 600 O.

RCA Outputs

  • One RCA output for each channel
  • 2V RMS at volume setting 80
  • 300 O output impedance
  • Suitable for conventional unbalanced amplifiers
  • Variable output controlled by Selekt DSM

Balanced XLR Outputs

  • One XLR output for each channel
  • 4V RMS at volume setting 80
  • 600 O output impedance
  • Suitable for compatible balanced amplifiers
  • Useful for longer analogue cable runs

Choosing RCA or XLR

The best connection depends on the inputs provided by the external amplifier and the design of the complete system.

RCA provides broad compatibility with conventional Hi-Fi power amplifiers, while balanced XLR may provide improved rejection of interference over longer cable runs when connected to genuinely balanced equipment.

An XLR connection is not automatically superior in every system. Amplifier design, cable length and system grounding should all be considered.

Audio T can demonstrate suitable connection options and recommend cables appropriate for the partnered amplification.

Network Music Streaming

Selekt DSM can play music stored on a compatible network server, NAS drive or computer connected to the same home network.

Supported formats include FLAC, Apple Lossless, WAV, AIFF, AAC, MP3, OGG, WMA and DSD files.

Network PCM playback is supported up to 24-bit/384kHz with Organik conversion.

DSD64, DSD128 and DSD256 files are also supported through the compatible analogue Organik outputs.

DSD Has Processing Limitations

Native DSD playback is available through the analogue Organik outputs but is not supported through Exakt Link, SPDIF digital output or external HDMI, Toslink and USB inputs.

Space Optimisation and other digital processing cannot be applied while native DSD is playing.

Integrated Streaming Services

Selekt DSM supports a broad selection of music-streaming and internet-radio services, including:

  • Qobuz
  • TIDAL
  • Spotify Connect
  • Deezer
  • AirPlay 2
  • Roon Ready playback
  • airable
  • TuneIn
  • Calm Radio

Available services, subscription requirements and playback quality are controlled by the individual service provider and may change over time.

Linn App Control

The Linn App provides control from a compatible smartphone, tablet or computer.

You can browse network music, access supported streaming platforms, create playlists, select physical inputs and adjust playback and volume.

Linn's Manage Systems interface provides access to input configuration, cartridge assignments, output settings and Space Optimisation.

Free software updates are delivered through the network connection as Linn develops the Selekt DSM platform.

Space Optimisation

Linn Space Optimisation room-correction technology is included as standard.

It models the room, loudspeaker characteristics, speaker position and listening location to reduce the effect of unwanted low-frequency room interactions.

The system is particularly useful where furniture, doors or the practical use of the room prevent loudspeakers from being positioned in their theoretical ideal location.

Audio T can measure the room, enter the required construction details and configure Space Optimisation around the connected loudspeakers and amplification.

Utopik Power Supply

Selekt DSM Edition Hub is fitted with Linn's Utopik switch-mode power supply.

Utopik uses multiple feedback loops to monitor and regulate its output while filtering unwanted mains-borne interference.

Independently regulated power rails supply the digital processing, analogue circuitry and installed Organik modules.

The supply is designed to respond efficiently as the electrical demands of the music signal and internal circuitry change.

Moving Magnet Phono Input

A dedicated RCA moving magnet input allows a compatible turntable to connect directly to Selekt DSM.

Linn specifies 40dB of MM gain with an input impedance of 47kO and capacitance of 100pF.

This is suitable for a wide range of conventional moving magnet cartridges, subject to the cartridge manufacturer's recommended loading.

A turntable ground connection is provided to help prevent unwanted hum.

Moving Coil Phono Input

A separate moving coil RCA input is provided for compatible low-output MC cartridges.

Linn specifies 54dB of gain with 100 O resistance and 470pF capacitance.

Moving coil cartridge output and loading requirements vary, so compatibility should be checked before connection.

Audio T can inspect the cartridge specification and configure the appropriate phono input level.

Use the Correct Phono Input

Moving magnet and moving coil cartridges require different gain and electrical loading.

Connecting a low-output moving coil cartridge to the MM input will normally produce very low volume, while an unsuitable high-output cartridge may overload the MC input.

Partnering a Linn LP12

Selekt DSM can partner a wide range of correctly configured Linn Sondek LP12 turntables.

The Linn Majik LP12 with Adikt can connect to the moving magnet input.

The Linn Majik LP12 with Koil and suitably matched higher-level LP12 cartridges can use the moving coil input.

Audio T can assemble the turntable, confirm cartridge compatibility and configure the Selekt DSM phono input.

Analogue Line Input

A stereo RCA line input accepts a conventional analogue source such as a CD player, tuner, cassette deck, external DAC or separate phono stage.

Input sensitivity can be selected between 1V, 2V and 4V RMS to suit the output of the connected source.

Correct sensitivity helps maintain sensible volume consistency and reduces the risk of overloading the analogue input.

Digital Inputs

Two Toslink optical inputs and two coaxial SPDIF connections are provided for compatible digital sources.

Supported PCM sample rates extend up to 192kHz.

Suitable products may include a CD transport, television, games system, set-top box or another digital music source.

One SPDIF connection can be configured as a fixed-level digital output instead of an input.

The Digital Output Has No Volume Control

When configured as an output, SPDIF operates at fixed digital level.

Connected digital equipment must provide its own safe volume control.

USB Audio

A USB Type B Audio Class 2 connection allows a compatible Windows PC or Mac to send PCM audio directly to Selekt DSM.

Supported USB sample rates extend from 44.1kHz to 192kHz.

The USB socket operates as an audio input rather than a connection for a memory stick or portable hard drive.

Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Selekt DSM can connect to the home network through wired Ethernet or dual-band Wi-Fi supporting standards up to 802.11ac.

A wired Ethernet connection normally provides the most predictable network performance and is recommended during initial installation.

Bluetooth 4.2 with SBC encoding provides a convenient option for casual playback from a compatible phone, tablet or computer.

Direct network streaming normally provides greater potential sound quality and more complete Linn system control than Bluetooth.

HDMI ARC for Television Sound

The standard HDMI ARC connection allows compatible television sound to play through the Selekt DSM and connected Hi-Fi system.

Games consoles, set-top boxes and video players can connect to the television, with the TV returning stereo audio to Selekt DSM.

The television should normally be configured to output supported stereo PCM unless the Selekt DSM has been expanded and configured for multichannel playback.

Optional HDMI Switching and Surround

An optional HDMI switching module can add four HDMI inputs and one HDMI output with eARC support.

Compatible games consoles, streaming devices, Blu-ray players and set-top boxes can then connect directly to the Selekt DSM.

The HDMI module can be expanded with Linn's optional Surround module for a suitably designed multichannel system.

The Dual Mono Organik line-output configuration is principally intended for high-performance stereo playback, so any surround expansion should be planned carefully with Audio T.

Dedicated Subwoofer Connections

Edition Hub includes dedicated RCA connections for compatible powered subwoofers.

These can provide bass reinforcement or supported bass redirection within a correctly configured stereo system.

Subwoofer placement, crossover behaviour, level and Space Optimisation should be configured alongside the main loudspeakers.

Integrated Headphone Output

A concealed 6.3mm quarter-inch headphone socket provides personal listening without requiring a separate headphone amplifier.

Its position on the side of the Edition Hub preserves the clean appearance of the front fascia while remaining accessible during everyday use.

Headphone sensitivity and impedance should be considered when selecting a suitable model.

Two Exakt Link Connections

Two Exakt Link sockets allow compatible Linn Exakt loudspeakers, Exaktboxes and other supported products to connect to the Edition Hub.

Exakt sends digital audio, timing and configuration data to the connected component.

The Dual Mono Organik analogue outputs and Exakt Link provide two different system routes. The best choice depends on the loudspeakers, amplification and intended upgrade path.

Edition Hub Construction

Edition Hub uses an all-machined aluminium enclosure designed to provide greater rigidity and internal isolation than folded casework.

The chassis consists of four substantial aluminium plates secured together to form a precisely aligned structure with concealed joins.

This creates a stable platform for the network, power-supply, digital-conversion and analogue-output circuitry.

The front is finished with mirrored glass, behind which the large-format display becomes visible when information is required and fades from view afterwards.

Cut-Glass Control Dial

A cut-glass rotary dial is positioned centrally on the upper surface.

It can control volume, playback, source selection and other everyday functions without requiring the Linn App.

The illuminated dial also provides visual feedback for volume and system operation.

Six Programmable Smart Buttons

Six machined aluminium buttons provide one-touch access to selected favourites.

They can be assigned to playlists, albums, artists, radio stations, streaming content or physical inputs.

This makes the system easier to use for household members who do not want to browse through an application every time they listen.

Black or Silver Finish

The current options on this page are Black and Silver.

Both finishes use the same all-machined Edition Hub enclosure, mirrored-glass fascia, cut-glass dial, aluminium smart buttons and Dual Mono Organik output configuration.

Positioning and Ventilation

Place Edition Hub on a rigid, level and stable equipment support with suitable ventilation.

Do not cover the enclosure or install it within sealed furniture without adequate airflow.

Leave additional room behind the unit for XLR or RCA interconnects, HDMI, Ethernet, mains and other connected cables.

Cables should be able to bend naturally without pulling against the sockets or placing strain on the rear panel.

Dual Mono Organik or Stereo Organik?

The stereo Organik configuration uses one two-channel line-output cartridge fitted with one stereo Organik DAC.

Dual Mono Organik uses two single-channel line-output cartridges and two mono Organik DACs.

Stereo Organik

  • One stereo line-output cartridge
  • One stereo Organik DAC module
  • Stereo RCA and XLR outputs
  • Lower-cost Edition Hub Organik configuration
  • Retains additional cartridge-slot flexibility

Dual Mono Organik

  • Two mono line-output cartridges
  • Two mono Organik DAC modules
  • Separate left and right conversion
  • Highest Selekt analogue line-output configuration
  • Third cartridge slot cannot provide another mono stereo channel

Edition Hub or Classic Hub?

Edition Hub and Classic Hub use the same modular Selekt DSM concept but differ in enclosure construction and standard positioning.

The Linn Selekt DSM Classic Hub uses folded aluminium casework mounted on a machined base.

Edition Hub uses a substantially more elaborate all-machined aluminium enclosure with concealed joins, mirrored glass and enhanced internal isolation.

Both can support Organik conversion, but Edition Hub provides the premium mechanical and visual platform.

Partnering External Amplification

The Dual Mono Organik outputs can connect to a stereo power amplifier, a pair of mono amplifiers or compatible active loudspeakers.

Amplifier input sensitivity, gain, connection type and loudspeaker requirements should all be considered.

Audio T can demonstrate suitable amplification and confirm whether RCA or balanced XLR provides the most appropriate system connection.

Professional Configuration

The Edition Hub, mono output cartridges and Organik DAC modules must be installed and configured as one complete system.

Output-channel assignment, input settings, network configuration, streaming services and Space Optimisation should all be completed before final use.

Cartridge or DAC changes require the Selekt DSM to be fully disconnected from the mains and should be carried out by an experienced Linn retailer.
