Triangle AIO 3 Active Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Speaker

Audio T Verdict

The Triangle AIO 3 sits somewhere between a traditional Hi-Fi system and a conventional wireless speaker. Everything is housed inside one compact cabinet, but Triangle still gives the left and right channels their own drive units, with two tweeters, two mid/bass drivers and 2 x 45W of Class D amplification.

That makes it considerably more interesting than a simple Bluetooth speaker. Wi-Fi streaming supports music up to 24-bit/192kHz, while AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Qobuz, Tidal, Deezer, Amazon Music, internet radio and network music libraries are all supported through Triangle's AIO ecosystem.

Bluetooth 5.0 is there when convenience matters, with aptX, aptX HD and aptX Low Latency alongside AAC and SBC. For permanent home use, however, Wi-Fi or Ethernet makes the most sense because it gives you access to the higher-resolution network playback, streaming services and multiroom functions.

The rear panel also makes the AIO 3 surprisingly flexible. A 3.5mm analogue input handles conventional line-level sources, optical lets you use it to improve television sound, and USB-A provides playback from compatible flash storage.

Unlike the AIO TWIN, the AIO 3 puts both stereo channels into a single enclosure. That makes it far easier to accommodate, although the physical width of the stereo image cannot match a pair of separate speakers positioned several feet apart. Triangle also allows compatible AIO speakers to be configured as a stereo pair if you want to expand the system later.

At 360mm wide and only 190mm high, it works particularly well where a conventional pair of speakers simply will not fit: bedrooms, kitchens, home offices, smaller living rooms and secondary systems.

If you want a compact wireless system without giving up proper network streaming, useful physical inputs or genuine left/right speaker channels, the AIO 3 packs an impressive amount into one box.

One Speaker, Proper Stereo Channels

The AIO 3 is what Triangle describes as a monobloc stereo speaker.

Rather than using one tweeter and one mid/bass driver to reproduce a combined mono signal, the cabinet contains:

  • Two 25mm tweeters
  • Two 100mm mid/bass drivers
  • Two amplifier channels

The internal layout is divided to reproduce distinct left and right channels from a single enclosure.

Is It the Same as Two Separate Stereo Speakers?

Not quite.

The AIO 3 reproduces left and right programme information, but the physical distance between those channels is limited by the width of the cabinet.

A conventional pair of speakers can be placed much farther apart and therefore create a substantially wider physical stereo soundstage.

Single-Box Stereo Has a Different Purpose

The advantage of the AIO 3 is simplicity and compactness.

If maximum stereo separation is the priority and your room has the space, consider the Triangle AIO TWIN instead.

2 x 45W Class D Amplification

The AIO 3 contains two Class D amplifier channels rated at:

2 x 45 watts RMS.

No external integrated amplifier or power amplifier is required.

Simply connect the speaker to mains power, select a source and control playback from the supplied remote, Triangle AIO app or compatible streaming service.

Four Drive Units

The cabinet contains four individual drive units:

  • 2 x 25mm silk-dome tweeters
  • 2 x 100mm mid/bass drivers

Triangle describes the layout as a 2 x 2-way configuration, with each side of the cabinet handling one stereo channel.

25mm Silk-Dome Tweeters

Each stereo channel uses its own 25mm fabric or silk-dome tweeter for high-frequency reproduction.

Giving each channel its own tweeter allows the AIO 3 to retain left and right information rather than summing everything into mono.

100mm Mid/Bass Drivers

Two 100mm mid/bass drivers handle the majority of the musical range and lower frequencies.

A rear reflex port reinforces low-frequency output from the compact cabinet.

Rear Bass-Reflex Port

The bass-reflex vent is positioned at the rear of the AIO 3.

That means wall distance can influence bass balance.

Moving the speaker closer to a rear wall normally increases perceived bass, while giving it more space can improve definition if the presentation becomes too heavy.

Do Not Push It Hard Against the Wall

Although the AIO 3 is compact enough to fit easily onto furniture, avoid completely blocking the rear reflex port.

Start with some space behind the cabinet and adjust according to:

  • Bass weight
  • Bass definition
  • Room size
  • Furniture position
  • Personal preference

For Rooms Up to Approximately 20m²

Triangle's current product guidance positions the AIO 3 for small and medium-sized rooms up to approximately 20 square metres.

Suitable applications include:

  • Bedrooms
  • Kitchens
  • Home offices
  • Dining rooms
  • Smaller living rooms
  • Secondary music systems

Room Size Is a Guide, Not a Hard Limit

Listening distance, room acoustics and required playback volume all affect how large a space a speaker can comfortably fill.

For a larger room or wider stereo presentation, a pair of AIO TWIN speakers may be the better choice.

24-Bit/192kHz Wi-Fi Streaming

Triangle specifies network music playback up to:

24-bit / 192kHz.

This applies to compatible music delivered through the network rather than every source automatically playing at that resolution.

What Determines Playback Quality?

Actual resolution depends on:

  • The streaming service
  • Your subscription
  • The original recording
  • The particular release
  • Your network music file
  • The connection being used

Bluetooth 5.0

The current AIO 3 uses Bluetooth 5.0.

Triangle specifies support for:

  • aptX
  • aptX HD
  • aptX Low Latency
  • AAC
  • SBC

aptX HD

aptX HD provides a higher-quality Bluetooth option when the transmitting device also supports the codec.

Triangle currently specifies Bluetooth HD playback at:

16-bit / 44kHz.

For the AIO 3's highest published resolution, use network streaming rather than Bluetooth.

aptX Low Latency

aptX Low Latency is intended to minimise the delay between picture and sound when the transmitting device also supports it.

This can be useful with compatible video equipment, although the optical input remains the preferred permanent television connection.

Wi-Fi or Bluetooth?

Wi-Fi

  • Up to 24-bit/192kHz
  • Spotify Connect
  • AirPlay
  • Qobuz and Tidal
  • NAS playback
  • Internet radio
  • Multiroom functionality
  • Best choice for regular home listening

Bluetooth

  • Fast direct pairing
  • No network setup required
  • aptX HD
  • aptX Low Latency
  • Useful for visitors
  • 16-bit/44kHz published Bluetooth HD sampling

2.4GHz Wi-Fi

Triangle specifies IEEE 802.11 b/g/n wireless networking on the 2.4GHz band.

2.4GHz Wi-Fi Required

The AIO 3 uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Triangle does not list 5GHz Wi-Fi support.

Make sure your router provides a compatible 2.4GHz network during setup.

Ethernet Connection

A 10/100Mbps RJ45 Ethernet socket provides a wired alternative to Wi-Fi.

Ethernet can be worthwhile where:

  • Wi-Fi reception is unreliable
  • The speaker is a long way from the router
  • The building has thick walls
  • Several AIO products are grouped together
  • Network stability is a priority

Triangle AIO App

The Triangle AIO app is available for compatible iOS and Android devices.

It provides access to:

  • Streaming services
  • Internet radio
  • Network music libraries
  • Multiroom grouping
  • Individual speaker control
  • Volume adjustment
  • Equaliser settings
  • Favourites
  • Alarm functions
  • Automatic sleep settings
  • Device information

AirPlay

Apple devices can send compatible audio to the AIO 3 through AirPlay.

AirPlay Compatibility

The AIO 3 supports AirPlay. AirPlay 2 is not listed in Triangle's current specification, so customers specifically requiring AirPlay 2 should check compatibility before purchase.

Spotify Connect

Spotify Connect allows the AIO 3 to be selected directly from within the Spotify app.

Once selected, the speaker retrieves the music through the network rather than relying on a conventional Bluetooth audio stream from the phone.

Streaming Services

Triangle currently lists:

  • Spotify
  • Deezer
  • Tidal
  • Qobuz
  • Amazon Music

Service availability, subscription requirements and available playback quality can change over time.

Internet Radio

TuneIn provides access to internet radio within the AIO ecosystem.

This includes a wide range of:

  • UK stations
  • International radio
  • Specialist broadcasters
  • Internet-only stations

UPnP and DLNA Network Playback

The AIO 3 can also access compatible music stored elsewhere on the home network.

This can include music libraries hosted on:

  • NAS drives
  • Computers
  • Compatible media servers

Supported Audio Formats

Triangle currently specifies support for:

  • APE
  • FLAC
  • WAV
  • Apple Lossless / ALAC
  • AAC
  • AAC-LC
  • HE-AAC
  • HE-AAC v2
  • MP3
  • CBR and VBR files

Triangle AIO Multiroom

The AIO 3 is part of Triangle's Linkplay-based multiroom ecosystem.

Current compatible products include:

  • AIO 3
  • AIO TWIN
  • AIO C
  • AIO PRO A50

Up to Five Devices Over Wi-Fi

Triangle's current detailed technical specification states that up to five compatible AIO products can be grouped over Wi-Fi, subject to network performance.

Up to Ten Devices Over Ethernet

Using wired Ethernet connections, Triangle specifies grouping of up to ten compatible AIO devices.

Different Rooms, Different Music

AIO products do not need to remain permanently grouped.

Compatible devices around the home can be controlled independently, allowing different music and volume levels in different rooms.

Synchronised Multiroom Playback

Compatible AIO products can also be grouped so that the same music plays across several rooms at the same time.

Can Two AIO 3 Speakers Be Used as a Stereo Pair?

Triangle's AIO platform includes a stereo-pair setup function for compatible speakers, assigning separate left and right roles through the application.

This provides a useful upgrade route if you begin with a single AIO 3 and later want much wider physical stereo separation.

Single AIO 3 or Two?

One AIO 3

  • Compact single-box system
  • Left and right channels inside one cabinet
  • Only one mains position required
  • Easy placement
  • Ideal for smaller spaces

Stereo Pair

  • Greater physical stereo separation
  • Independent left and right speaker positions
  • Requires two AIO 3 speakers
  • Requires mains power for both
  • Configured through the AIO ecosystem

3.5mm Analogue Input

A stereo 3.5mm mini-jack input allows a conventional line-level source to be connected.

Possible sources include:

  • CD players
  • Portable music players
  • Older streamers
  • DACs
  • Turntables with a built-in phono stage

No Built-In Phono Stage

Unlike the Triangle AIO TWIN, the AIO 3 does not specify an integrated MM phono preamplifier.

A conventional turntable therefore requires a built-in phono stage or suitable external phono preamplifier before connecting to the 3.5mm auxiliary input.

Connecting RCA Analogue Sources

The AIO 3 provides a 3.5mm stereo analogue input rather than a pair of RCA sockets.

An RCA-equipped source can still be connected using a suitable RCA-to-3.5mm stereo cable.

Optical Digital Input

An optical S/PDIF input allows the AIO 3 to receive digital audio from compatible sources.

Typical applications include:

  • Televisions
  • CD transports
  • Games consoles with suitable output
  • Network players

Improve Your TV Sound

The optical input makes the AIO 3 a compact alternative to relying on a television's built-in speakers.

It is particularly useful where you want:

  • Better music reproduction
  • One system for TV and streaming
  • A compact cabinet rather than a full Hi-Fi system
  • Network and Bluetooth functionality when the TV is off

No HDMI ARC or eARC

Triangle specifies optical digital input rather than HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC.

The AIO 3 therefore does not provide the same HDMI-CEC control integration offered by many current soundbars.

Optical Playback up to 24-Bit/192kHz

Triangle's current sampling specification lists optical playback up to 24-bit/192kHz.

Optical Digital Input Only

The AIO 3 provides an optical digital input. A coaxial digital input is not fitted.

USB-A Playback

The rear USB-A connection allows compatible music stored on USB flash memory to be played directly.

USB-A Is Not a Computer USB DAC Input

The USB socket is intended for compatible storage devices.

Triangle does not specify asynchronous USB audio operation from a computer.

Infra-Red Remote Control

An infra-red remote is supplied for everyday functions without needing to open the AIO app each time.

This is particularly useful when the AIO 3 is being used for television or an analogue source.

Equaliser Control

The Triangle AIO platform provides EQ adjustment through the application.

This can help make small changes for:

  • Room position
  • Furniture placement
  • Personal preference

Large tonal problems are usually better addressed by improving physical speaker placement first.

Alarm and Auto-Sleep

The AIO platform includes alarm and automatic sleep functions, making the AIO 3 particularly useful in bedrooms and everyday living spaces as well as conventional Hi-Fi systems.

Wi-Fi Repeater Function

Triangle also includes a Wi-Fi repeater or hotspot-related function within the AIO platform.

This can help extend local network access around an appropriately configured installation.

Wooden Cabinet

Rather than using a lightweight moulded plastic enclosure, Triangle houses the AIO 3 within a high-density wooden cabinet.

The enclosure forms part of the acoustic design and provides a rigid structure for the four drive units.

Gabriel Fabrics

Triangle works with Danish textile specialist Gabriel on the fabric finishes used around the AIO 3.

This allows the speaker to function as a piece of interior furniture as well as an audio product, with a much broader colour range than the conventional Black or White choice.

Aluminium Feet With Rubber Pads

The AIO 3 uses aluminium feet fitted with rubber pads.

These help:

  • Protect furniture
  • Provide a stable support
  • Reduce direct mechanical contact with the surface below

Current Finish Options

Triangle's current online selector includes:

  • Red Ocher
  • Sage Green
  • Blue
  • Powder Pink
  • Artic Blue
  • Black
  • Greige
  • Green Forest
  • Kamel

Compact Dimensions

The AIO 3 measures approximately:

  • Width: 360mm
  • Height: 190mm
  • Depth: 150mm

This makes it considerably easier to accommodate than a conventional amplifier and pair of separate loudspeakers.

5kg Weight

The speaker weighs approximately 5kg.

Despite its compact dimensions, use a stable piece of furniture or support capable of holding it securely.
