Triangle AIO TWIN Active Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Speakers - Pair

Audio T Verdict

The Triangle AIO TWIN is one of those systems that manages to remove a lot of Hi-Fi boxes without removing the things that make a proper stereo system useful.

Inside the pair is 2 x 50W of Class D amplification, network streaming up to 24-bit/192kHz, Bluetooth aptX HD, an MM phono stage for a turntable, analogue inputs, optical digital input for a television, USB flash-drive playback and a subwoofer output.

More importantly, these are two proper separate loudspeakers rather than a one-box wireless speaker attempting to create stereo through digital processing. That gives you genuine physical left and right separation and considerably more freedom when positioning them in a room.

Each cabinet uses a 130mm mid/bass driver and 25mm silk-dome tweeter, with Triangle specifying a 56Hz to 22kHz ±3dB response. The system is recommended for rooms up to around 25m², although the subwoofer output gives you an easy route to greater low-frequency weight if the room or your music demands it.

One speaker acts as the Master and contains the amplifier, network hardware and source connections. The second speaker remains passive and connects to the Master with the supplied 3m speaker cable. So while your music can arrive wirelessly through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, the two speakers themselves are connected by cable.

The integrated MM phono stage is particularly welcome. A conventional turntable fitted with a moving-magnet cartridge can be connected directly without adding a separate phono stage, while a line-level input remains available for other analogue sources.

TV integration is through optical rather than HDMI ARC, which means the AIO TWIN does not offer the same automatic television-volume behaviour as an HDMI-equipped soundbar or active speaker system. For music-first users who simply want much better stereo TV sound as well, however, it remains a very neat solution.

Add the Triangle AIO app, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Qobuz, Tidal, Deezer, Amazon Music, internet radio and multiroom, and the AIO TWIN effectively becomes an entire modern Hi-Fi system contained within a pair of compact bookshelf speakers.

A Complete Hi-Fi System in Two Speakers

The AIO TWIN can replace several separate Hi-Fi components.

A conventional system might require:

  • Network streamer
  • DAC
  • Integrated amplifier
  • Phono stage
  • Bluetooth receiver
  • Pair of passive speakers

The AIO TWIN brings most of those functions together into one stereo loudspeaker system.

One Active Master Speaker

One AIO TWIN cabinet acts as the Master speaker.

It contains:

  • Class D amplification
  • Network streamer
  • Bluetooth receiver
  • Phono stage
  • Analogue inputs
  • Optical input
  • USB playback
  • Subwoofer output
  • Ethernet connection

The Second Speaker Connects by Cable

The second speaker receives its amplified signal from the Master through a conventional speaker cable.

Triangle supplies a 3m cable with the system.

The Speakers Are Not Wirelessly Linked

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth refer to the way music reaches the Master speaker.

The left and right AIO TWIN cabinets are connected to one another using speaker cable.

Need More Than 3 Metres Between the Speakers?

Triangle states that conventional speaker cable can be substituted where a different length is required.

This gives you more flexibility than a proprietary fixed inter-speaker cable.

Audio T can advise on an appropriate cable and sensible maximum length for your installation.

2 x 50W Class D Amplification

The integrated amplifier produces:

2 x 50 watts RMS.

One amplifier channel drives each loudspeaker.

Because Triangle controls both the amplifier and loudspeaker design, there is no need to separately calculate amplifier power or electrical speaker compatibility.

25mm Silk-Dome Tweeter

Each cabinet uses a 25mm silk-dome tweeter for high-frequency reproduction.

Soft-dome tweeters are widely used in Hi-Fi because their light diaphragm can reproduce the treble range while remaining well controlled.

130mm Mid/Bass Driver

A 130mm mid/bass unit handles the majority of the musical range and low frequencies.

The combination gives Triangle a quoted overall response of:

56Hz – 22kHz ±3dB.

56Hz Bass Extension

For compact bookshelf speakers, a properly qualified 56Hz lower limit provides useful bass extension for everyday music listening.

You may still want a subwoofer if you regularly listen to:

  • Electronic music
  • Large-scale orchestral recordings
  • Pipe organ
  • Bass-heavy rock
  • Films and television

Subwoofer Output

A dedicated subwoofer output allows an active subwoofer to be added without replacing the speakers.

Triangle recommends models such as its Talès 340, although other suitable active subwoofers can also be considered.

Adding a Subwoofer Is About Integration

More bass is not automatically better bass.

Correct level, crossover setting and room position are important if the subwoofer is to extend the system without drawing attention to itself.

Recommended for Rooms Up to 25m²

Triangle recommends the AIO TWIN for listening rooms up to approximately 25 square metres.

That is a useful guide rather than a hard limit because room acoustics and listening distance also affect how much output a system needs.

For substantially larger spaces, Triangle recommends either adding a subwoofer or considering a larger active speaker.

24-Bit/192kHz Wi-Fi Streaming

The AIO TWIN supports network playback up to:

24-bit / 192kHz.

This allows compatible high-resolution music from streaming services or network storage to be played without the system being restricted to CD-quality data.

Resolution Depends on the Music Source

The maximum specification does not mean every song will play at 24-bit/192kHz.

Actual resolution depends on:

  • The original recording
  • The streaming service
  • Your subscription
  • The particular release
  • The source device
  • The connection method

Bluetooth 5.0

Bluetooth provides the quickest way to play music from a compatible phone, tablet or computer without first configuring network streaming.

Triangle specifies:

  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • aptX
  • aptX HD
  • aptX Low Latency
  • AAC
  • SBC

aptX HD

aptX HD allows compatible Bluetooth transmitters to send higher-resolution audio than the basic SBC codec.

Triangle specifies Bluetooth HD playback at up to:

24-bit / 44kHz.

Both the source and receiver must support the appropriate codec for it to be used.

aptX Low Latency

aptX Low Latency is designed to reduce the delay between picture and sound when used with a compatible transmitting device.

This can be useful for video playback, although the optical input remains the more appropriate permanent TV connection.

Wi-Fi or Bluetooth?

Wi-Fi

  • Up to 24-bit/192kHz
  • Streaming services
  • Multiroom
  • NAS playback
  • Spotify Connect
  • AirPlay
  • Best option for regular home listening

Bluetooth

  • Fast direct pairing
  • No network setup required
  • aptX HD supported
  • aptX Low Latency supported
  • Useful for guests
  • Maximum Triangle spec 24-bit/44kHz

2.4GHz Wi-Fi

Triangle specifies IEEE 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi on the 2.4GHz band.

2.4GHz Wi-Fi Required

The AIO TWIN uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Make sure your router provides a compatible 2.4GHz network during setup.

Ethernet Connection

A 10/100Mbps RJ45 network connection is provided for a wired installation.

Ethernet is worth considering where:

  • Wi-Fi reception is weak
  • The speakers are far from the router
  • The building has substantial walls
  • Several multiroom products are being grouped
  • Network reliability is a priority

Triangle AIO App

The Triangle AIO application is available for compatible iOS and Android devices.

It gives access to:

  • Streaming services
  • Network music
  • Internet radio
  • Multiroom grouping
  • Individual AIO devices
  • Volume control
  • Equaliser adjustment
  • Alarm functions
  • Auto-sleep settings

Spotify Connect

Spotify Connect allows the AIO TWIN to be selected directly from the Spotify app.

The speakers then retrieve the music stream over the network rather than relying on the phone to transmit ordinary Bluetooth audio.

AirPlay

Apple devices can stream compatible audio to the AIO TWIN using AirPlay.

AirPlay Compatibility

The AIO TWIN supports AirPlay. AirPlay 2 is not specified for this model, so features that specifically require AirPlay 2 should not be assumed.

Streaming Services

Triangle currently lists support within the AIO platform for:

  • Spotify
  • Deezer
  • Tidal
  • Qobuz
  • Amazon Music
  • TuneIn internet radio

Service availability can change over time and may depend on country, account type and subscription.

Qobuz and Tidal

The inclusion of Qobuz and Tidal makes the AIO TWIN particularly useful where high-resolution or lossless streaming forms the main source of the system.

Available quality depends on the service, subscription and recording.

Internet Radio With TuneIn

TuneIn provides access to a large range of online radio stations and internet broadcasts from around the world.

UPnP and DLNA Playback

The AIO TWIN can access compatible music libraries stored elsewhere on the home network.

This can include music held on:

  • NAS drives
  • Computers
  • Compatible media servers

Supported Music Files

Triangle currently lists:

  • APE
  • FLAC
  • WAV
  • Apple Lossless / ALAC
  • AAC
  • AAC-LC
  • HE-AAC
  • HE-AAC v2
  • MP3
  • CBR and VBR files

Triangle AIO Multiroom

The speakers form part of Triangle's Linkplay-based AIO ecosystem.

Compatible products can be grouped for synchronised playback around the home.

Current AIO products include:

  • AIO TWIN
  • AIO 3
  • AIO C
  • AIO PRO A50

Up to Five AIO Devices Over Wi-Fi

Triangle specifies multiroom grouping of up to five compatible devices over Wi-Fi, subject to network conditions.

Up to Ten Over Ethernet

When wired by Ethernet, Triangle specifies grouping of up to ten compatible products.

Integrated MM Phono Stage

The AIO TWIN includes a built-in moving-magnet phono preamplifier.

This allows a conventional turntable fitted with a suitable MM cartridge to be connected directly without adding a separate phono stage.

What Does a Phono Stage Do?

A phono cartridge produces a much smaller signal than an ordinary line-level source and requires RIAA equalisation.

The built-in MM stage provides the additional amplification and equalisation required before the signal reaches the main amplifier.

Moving Magnet, Not Moving Coil

Triangle specifies an MM phono preamplifier.

A conventional low-output moving-coil cartridge will normally require an appropriate external MC phono stage.

Can I Connect a Turntable With a Built-In Phono Stage?

Potentially, but the turntable's built-in phono stage should feed a line-level input rather than being amplified by a second MM phono stage.

Check the turntable's output mode and the AIO TWIN input arrangement before connection.

Triangle and Pro-Ject Turntable System

Triangle has also worked with Pro-Ject on turntable packages designed to complement the AIO TWIN.

You are not restricted to that particular turntable, however. Any suitably compatible turntable and MM cartridge can be considered.

3.5mm Analogue Input

A 3.5mm stereo mini-jack input provides an easy connection for another analogue source.

This can be useful for:

  • Portable audio players
  • CD players with suitable output
  • Older network players
  • Other line-level sources

Optical Input for TV

The AIO TWIN includes an optical S/PDIF input intended for televisions and other digital sources.

Triangle specifies optical playback up to:

24-bit / 192kHz.

A Proper Stereo Alternative to a Soundbar

Connecting a television through optical gives you genuine left and right speakers rather than putting the whole front soundstage inside one cabinet beneath the screen.

Potential benefits include:

  • Wider stereo separation
  • More flexible speaker placement
  • More natural music reproduction
  • Clearer separation of dialogue and effects
  • Ability to use the same system for serious music listening

No HDMI ARC

The AIO TWIN uses an optical connection for television sound.

Triangle does not specify HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC on this model.

TV remote volume control behaviour therefore depends on the television and installation rather than the HDMI-CEC control used by modern HDMI soundbars.

USB-A Flash Drive Playback

A USB-A port allows compatible music stored on a USB flash drive to be played through the system.

USB-A Is Not a USB DAC Input

The connection is intended for compatible USB storage rather than connecting a computer directly as an asynchronous USB audio source.

Infra-Red Remote Control

An infra-red handset is supplied for everyday control without requiring a phone or tablet.

The Triangle AIO app remains useful for streaming, multiroom and network functions.

Equaliser

The AIO platform includes EQ adjustment through the app.

This can help make small tonal adjustments for:

  • Room acoustics
  • Speaker position
  • Personal preference

Try improving physical speaker placement before making large EQ corrections.

Speaker Positioning

The AIO TWIN should be treated like a normal pair of bookshelf speakers rather than simply placed wherever there happens to be a mains socket.

Try to keep:

  • Left and right speakers at similar heights
  • Reasonably equal distances from the listening position
  • Useful space around the cabinets
  • The front of each speaker clear from furniture

Use Proper Speaker Stands Where Possible

A suitable stand can place the tweeter closer to seated ear height and keep both cabinets at matching levels.

Stable stands can also provide more flexibility in positioning than placing the speakers permanently on furniture.

Aluminium Feet With Rubber Pads

Triangle fits aluminium feet with rubber pads beneath the cabinets.

These help protect furniture surfaces and provide a controlled interface when the speakers are placed on a shelf, desk or sideboard.

High-Density Cabinet Construction

Triangle uses a high-density particle-board enclosure rather than a lightweight moulded plastic cabinet.

The aim is to provide sufficient rigidity and minimise unwanted cabinet contribution to the reproduced sound.

Gabriel Bond Fabric

The grille uses Bond textile from Danish fabric specialist Gabriel.

The material forms an important part of the AIO TWIN's distinctive appearance and is matched to the different cabinet finishes.

Magnetic Grilles

Two magnetic fabric grilles are supplied.

They can be removed easily without leaving conventional grille pegs visible on the front of the cabinet.

Compact Dimensions

Each speaker measures:

  • Width: 165mm
  • Height: 304mm
  • Depth: 235mm

That makes the AIO TWIN compact enough for smaller rooms while still providing genuine stereo separation.

5kg Per Speaker

Triangle specifies approximately 5kg per cabinet.

The complete packed pair weighs approximately 11.5kg.

Current Finish Options

Triangle's current product range includes:

  • Graphite Black
  • Frosted White
  • Linen Grey
  • Abyss Blue
  • Brown Maple
  • English Green
  • Macassar

Macassar Real-Wood Veneer

Macassar is Triangle's newer premium finish for the AIO TWIN.

Triangle describes it as a real wood veneer inspired by Macassar ebony.

As a natural veneer, visible grain and appearance can vary from one pair to another.
