Unlike McIntosh power amplifiers equipped with Autoformers, the MC830 is direct coupled, so its rated output increases as the loudspeaker impedance falls from 8 to 4 ohms.

Power Guard and Sentry Monitor
McIntosh incorporates two of its established protection systems into the MC830.
Power Guard continuously compares the amplifier's input and output signals. If the MC830 approaches clipping, the circuit intervenes to help prevent a heavily distorted waveform from reaching the loudspeaker. An amber Power Guard indicator on the front panel illuminates when the system is active.
McIntosh specifies less than 2% total harmonic distortion with an overdrive signal of up to 14dB when Power Guard is operating.
Sentry Monitor protects the output transistors from unsafe current conditions without placing conventional output fuses in the signal path. Built-in thermal protection also safeguards against excessive operating temperature.
Dual-Scale McIntosh Watt Meter
The front-panel blue Watt meter uses two scales to reflect the MC830's different output ratings into 4 and 8-ohm loudspeakers.
The upper scale displays output for an 8-ohm loudspeaker, while the lower scale corresponds to a 4-ohm load.
The meter control provides three operating modes:
- Lights Off: meter illumination off while the needle continues to operate
- Watts: conventional real-time output indication
- Hold: holds peak readings before gradually returning
When connected to a compatible McIntosh preamplifier through Power Control, meter illumination can also follow the controlling component.
Monogrammed Heatsinks and Solid Cinch Terminals
The solid-state output devices are mounted to McIntosh Monogrammed Heatsinks, which form a major part of the MC830's open-chassis design while providing the surface area required to dissipate heat.
McIntosh Solid Cinch speaker binding posts provide the single loudspeaker connection, with gold-plated contact surfaces and support for suitably terminated high-quality speaker cable.
The MC830 is designed for nominal 4 or 8-ohm loudspeakers. Unlike an Autoformer-equipped McIntosh amplifier, it does not provide separate impedance taps.
Power Control and Automatic Switching
McIntosh Power Control allows the MC830 to switch on and off with a compatible preamplifier, AV processor or other McIntosh control component.

Remember You Need Two for Stereo
The published 21.8kg weight and dimensions relate to a single MC830. A stereo pair therefore consists of two separate 21.8kg amplifiers, each requiring adequate support, ventilation, mains power and its own loudspeaker connection.
Ventilation and UK Power Specification
For custom installations, McIntosh specifies at least 15.3cm clearance above the amplifier, 5.1cm at each side and 1.6cm underneath. Approximately 45.7cm of depth should be allowed behind the front panel for the amplifier, ventilation and rear connections.
The UK-market MC830 is factory configured for 230V AC, 50/60Hz at 3.3A, with standby consumption below 0.5W.
