McIntosh C8 2-Channel Vacuum Tube Preamplifier

Audio T Verdict

There is something wonderfully unapologetic about the McIntosh C8. Four glowing 12AX7A vacuum tubes sit proudly on display, the polished stainless-steel chassis gleams beneath them and the familiar black-glass fascia leaves you in little doubt that this is a McIntosh.

More importantly, the specification is every bit as considered as the presentation. Five analogue inputs include dedicated Moving Magnet and Moving Coil phono stages with adjustable loading, while balanced and unbalanced outputs, subwoofer capability, a High Drive headphone amplifier and Home Theater PassThru make the C8 an exceptionally versatile control centre.

It can also grow with the system. McIntosh's optional DA2 Digital Audio Module adds seven digital inputs including USB, HDMI ARC and the proprietary MCT connection. Partner the C8 with a pair of MC830 monoblocks and you have one of McIntosh's most distinctive compact-format pre/power combinations.

McIntosh C8 Vacuum Tube Preamplifier

The C8 is a two-channel vacuum tube preamplifier designed around four 12AX7A valves, each housed beneath its own protective metal cage.

Its open-chassis architecture takes visual cues from classic McIntosh designs while combining them with modern system control, dedicated MM and MC phono stages and provision for the company's optional DA2 Digital Audio Module.

The standard C8 is an analogue preamplifier with five stereo inputs:

  • 1 x balanced XLR line-level input
  • 2 x unbalanced RCA line-level inputs
  • 1 x dedicated Moving Magnet phono input
  • 1 x dedicated Moving Coil phono input

Four 12AX7A Vacuum Tubes

At the centre of the C8 are four 12AX7A vacuum tubes, clearly visible through the open upper chassis and protected by McIntosh tube cages.

The C8 remains a thoroughly modern preamplifier around them. Input selection, volume, balance, tone controls, phono loading and other setup functions can be accessed from the front panel, with key functions also available from the supplied remote control.

A front-panel Vacuum Fluorescent Display shows the selected input, volume level and adjustment information without distracting from the traditional McIntosh styling.

Dedicated Moving Magnet and Moving Coil Phono Stages

Vinyl has been given considerably more attention than simply adding a token phono socket. Separate MM and MC inputs are provided, with cartridge loading adjustable directly through the C8's Trim menu.

Moving Magnet

  • Input impedance: 47k ohms
  • Capacitance: 50pF to 400pF
  • Adjustment: 50pF increments
  • Input sensitivity: 4.5mV
  • Voltage gain: 55dB
  • Signal-to-noise ratio: 80dB

Moving Coil

  • Load resistance: 50, 100, 200, 400 or 1,000 ohms
  • Capacitance: 100pF
  • Input sensitivity: 0.45mV
  • Voltage gain: 75dB
  • Signal-to-noise ratio: 75dB

A dedicated grounding post is provided for the turntable earth connection. McIntosh also notes that the MM input can be used with suitable high-output Moving Coil cartridges.

Cartridge Matching Matters

The adjustable phono loading allows the C8 to be configured more precisely for the cartridge being used. Check the cartridge manufacturer's recommended capacitance or load resistance as a starting point, or speak to Audio T if you'd like help configuring the C8 for your turntable.

Balanced and Unbalanced System Connectivity

The C8 offers both balanced and unbalanced connections for use with a wide range of source components and power amplifiers.

The main Output 1 provides both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA connections. McIntosh confirms that the balanced and unbalanced Output 1 connections can be used simultaneously, making configurations such as bi-amplification possible where appropriate.

A second stereo RCA output, labelled Output 2 / SUB, can be used for a second amplifier or powered subwoofer. It is a full-range output and can be configured for stereo or mono operation.

  • Balanced variable output: 1 x stereo XLR pair
  • Main unbalanced variable output: 1 x stereo RCA pair
  • Output 2 / SUB: 1 x stereo RCA pair
  • Maximum balanced output: 16V RMS
  • Maximum unbalanced output: 8V RMS

Optional DA2 Digital Audio Module

The standard C8 does not include digital audio inputs. Instead, McIntosh provides a dedicated expansion slot for the optional DA2 Digital Audio Module, allowing digital functionality to be added without replacing the preamplifier.

Once installed, DA2 adds seven digital inputs:

  • 2 x coaxial
  • 2 x optical
  • 1 x USB audio
  • 1 x proprietary MCT input
  • 1 x audio-only HDMI ARC

The DA2 uses a Quad Balanced, eight-channel, 32-bit DAC. Its USB input supports native DSD up to DSD512 and DXD up to 384kHz, while the coaxial and optical inputs support digital audio up to 24-bit/192kHz.

The MCT connection allows compatible McIntosh SACD/CD transports to pass the DSD data from SACDs securely to the DA2. HDMI ARC allows audio from a compatible television to be played through the C8 system and does not carry video.

DA2 Is an Optional Upgrade

The DA2 Digital Audio Module is not included as standard with the C8. McIntosh requires installation to be carried out by an authorised McIntosh dealer or service agency.

High Drive Headphone Amplifier and Tone Control

A front-mounted 6.35mm High Drive headphone connection provides a dedicated option for private listening. McIntosh specifies a headphone load range of 100 to 600 ohms.

The C8 also includes adjustable bass and treble controls, each operating from -12dB to +12dB in 1dB increments. Tone settings are stored individually for each input and can be bypassed completely when not required.

Individual input levels can also be trimmed from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5dB increments, helping to keep perceived volume more consistent when switching between sources.

Home Cinema and McIntosh System Integration

Home Theater PassThru allows the C8 to become part of a combined stereo and home-cinema installation, while McIntosh Power Control connections can switch compatible partnering components on and off with the preamplifier.

Additional control connectivity includes:

  • RS232 system control
  • Rear-panel external IR input
  • 2 x McIntosh Data Ports
  • 1 x Main Power Control output
  • 2 x assignable Power Control trigger outputs
  • Selectable 30-minute Auto Off

The C8 is particularly well matched visually and electrically with the McIntosh MC830 monoblock power amplifier and MCD85 SACD/CD player.

Classic McIntosh Construction

The C8 is built around a stainless-steel chassis polished to a mirror finish, with die-cast aluminium McIntosh name badges on either side.

The front panel uses traditional McIntosh black glass with silver trim, illuminated branding, rotary control knobs and the central information display. Above it, the four illuminated valves form an integral part of the design rather than being hidden inside the casework.

The relatively narrow 31.2cm chassis also makes the C8 notably more compact than McIntosh's traditional full-width preamplifiers.

  • Width: 31.2cm
  • Height: 19.4cm including feet
  • Depth: 41.3cm including front panel, knobs and cables
  • Weight: 8.2kg

Allow Space Around the Valves

Because the C8 is a vacuum tube preamplifier, ventilation is important. For enclosed installations McIntosh specifies at least 15.3cm clearance above, 5.1cm at each side and 1.6cm below, with sufficient rear depth for ventilation and connections.
