The MHA200 is wonderfully focused. There is no DAC, streaming platform, display or menu system competing for attention. Instead, McIntosh has built a compact valve amplifier whose sole purpose is to get the best from a serious pair of headphones.
Two 12AT7 driver valves, two 12BH7A power valves and a pair of McIntosh Unity Coupled Circuit output transformers sit within that beautifully polished chassis. Four selectable impedance ranges help match everything from relatively low-impedance designs to demanding high-impedance headphones, while balanced and unbalanced headphone connections cater for a wide variety of cables.

McIntosh MHA200 Vacuum Tube Headphone Amplifier
The MHA200 is a dedicated two-channel vacuum tube headphone amplifier designed around McIntosh's Unity Coupled Circuit output transformer technology.
Its compact chassis houses four valves:
- 2 x 12AT7: driver-stage vacuum tubes
- 2 x 12BH7A: power-stage vacuum tubes
McIntosh describes the output stage as a Push-Pull pure Class A triode design, coupled to the headphones through a pair of specially adapted Unity Coupled Circuit output transformers.
McIntosh Unity Coupled Circuit Technology
The Unity Coupled Circuit is one of McIntosh's defining technologies, dating back to the company's earliest vacuum tube amplifiers.
For the MHA200, McIntosh designed dedicated output transformers to match the valve amplifier section to a wide range of headphone impedances. Rather than relying solely on changes in input-stage voltage gain, the transformer secondary windings provide dedicated load settings for different headphones.
The front-panel LOAD control offers four selections:
Lower Impedance Headphones
- 32-ohm setting: approximately 32-100 ohms
- 100-ohm setting: approximately 100-250 ohms
Higher Impedance Headphones
- 250-ohm setting: approximately 250-600 ohms
- 600-ohm setting: approximately 600-1,000 ohms
McIntosh specifies 500mW headphone power output, with its current product specification covering all four selectable impedance ranges.
Choosing the Load Setting
Set the LOAD control to the value closest to the impedance specified by the headphone manufacturer. McIntosh notes that an exact match is not essential because headphone impedance varies with frequency.

Three Headphone Connection Options
The MHA200 caters for conventional and balanced headphone cables without requiring adaptors in many systems.
- 1 x 6.35mm stereo headphone output: conventional unbalanced connection
- 1 x 4-pin XLR: balanced stereo headphone connection
- 2 x 3-pin XLR: separate balanced left and right headphone connections
The dual 3-pin arrangement is intended for headphones terminated with separate left and right XLR connectors, while the single 4-pin socket provides the increasingly common balanced stereo connection.
Balanced and Unbalanced Source Inputs
The rear panel provides both balanced and unbalanced analogue inputs:
- Balanced: 1 x stereo XLR pair
- Unbalanced: 1 x stereo RCA pair
- Balanced sensitivity: 2.0V RMS
- Unbalanced sensitivity: 1.0V RMS

McIntosh recommends using either the balanced or unbalanced connection rather than connecting both simultaneously.
The balanced input also makes it practical to position the MHA200 close to the listening chair while using longer balanced interconnects from a remotely located source or preamplifier.
Use with Fixed or Variable Output Sources
The MHA200 includes its own analogue volume control, so it can connect directly to a fixed-output source such as a CD player or DAC.
If the connected component already provides variable output, such as a preamplifier, McIntosh provides a clearly marked Reference Position at the 12 o'clock point on the MHA200 volume control. The upstream component can then be used for day-to-day volume adjustment.
This gives the MHA200 considerable flexibility within both dedicated headphone systems and larger Hi-Fi installations.
Pure Analogue Valve Amplification
The MHA200 is intentionally focused on analogue headphone amplification. It does not include a DAC, USB audio connection, optical or coaxial digital input, network streaming or tone controls.
Digital sources therefore need their own analogue output or an external DAC before connecting to the MHA200.

Power Control and McIntosh System Integration
A McIntosh Power Control input allows the MHA200 to switch on and off automatically with a compatible McIntosh component.
A corresponding Power Control output can pass the trigger signal on to another compatible product, making the MHA200 easier to integrate into a larger McIntosh system.
When it is operating independently, the MHA200 can automatically enter standby after approximately 30 minutes without an incoming audio signal.
Compact Luxury Construction
The MHA200 takes visual inspiration from McIntosh's classic vacuum tube power amplifiers, but shrinks the concept into a chassis only 15.6cm wide.
A custom-formed stainless-steel chassis is polished to a mirror finish, reflecting the glow from the four valves, while a vintage-style die-cast aluminium McIntosh badge sits on the side.
A protective vacuum tube cover is supplied and can be fitted over the valves when required.

Ventilation and Initial Setup
Vacuum tubes generate heat, and McIntosh specifies generous ventilation around the MHA200: at least 48.3cm above, 10.2cm at the rear and sides, and 1.3cm underneath. Do not remove the feet or obstruct the ventilation openings.
The MHA200 is shipped with protective foam around the vacuum tubes. McIntosh specifically instructs that this foam must be removed before the mains lead is connected. Retain the packing materials for future transport.
UK Power Specification
The UK-market MHA200 is factory configured for 230V AC, 50/60Hz operation with a power consumption of 50W.
Standby consumption is below 0.5W. McIntosh states that field AC-voltage conversion is not possible, so the voltage shown on the rear panel should always be checked before connection.
