Audio T Verdict

The MA5300 may be McIntosh's most compact solid-state integrated amplifier, but there is very little entry-level about it. You still get the black-glass front panel, illuminated blue Watt meters, substantial construction and unmistakable McIntosh appearance, together with a genuinely comprehensive specification.

Its direct-coupled power amplifier delivers 100W per channel into 8-ohm loudspeakers or 160W into 4 ohms, backed by Power Guard, Sentry Monitor and ThermalTrak output devices. Six analogue inputs include a Moving Magnet phono stage, while the factory-fitted DA1 module adds six high-resolution digital connections.

There is also a useful upgrade path. The DA1 can be replaced by McIntosh's newer DA2 module to add HDMI ARC, DSD512 support and the latest generation of McIntosh DAC technology without replacing the amplifier itself.

McIntosh MA5300 Integrated Amplifier

The MA5300 is a two-channel solid-state integrated amplifier combining McIntosh preamplifier, power-amplifier, phono and digital-conversion technology within one chassis.

Its direct-coupled output stage is rated at:

  • 100W per channel into 8 ohms
  • 160W per channel into 4 ohms
  • 0.005% maximum total harmonic distortion
  • 1.8dB dynamic headroom

Dedicated 4-ohm and 8-ohm loudspeaker connections are provided, with the blue front-panel meters using dual scales to indicate output for either impedance.

Direct-Coupled McIntosh Power

Unlike larger McIntosh integrated amplifiers fitted with Autoformers, the MA5300 uses a direct-coupled solid-state output stage. Rated power therefore rises from 100W per channel into 8 ohms to 160W into 4 ohms.

McIntosh ThermalTrak output transistors are mounted to Monogrammed Heatsinks, while a substantial power supply incorporates multiple filter capacitors and 60 joules of energy storage.

Power Guard, Sentry Monitor and Thermal Protection

McIntosh Power Guard continuously monitors the amplifier's output and responds when it approaches clipping, helping prevent heavily distorted waveforms from being sent to the loudspeakers.

Sentry Monitor provides fuse-less output-stage protection against unsafe current levels, while thermal protection removes power if excessive operating temperature is detected.

Together these technologies allow the MA5300 to protect both itself and the connected loudspeakers without relying on conventional output fuses in the signal path.

Six Analogue Inputs and MM Phono

The analogue section provides six stereo inputs:

  • 4 x unbalanced RCA line inputs
  • 1 x Moving Magnet phono input

The MM phono stage uses fixed cartridge loading of 47k ohms / 50pF with 2.5mV sensitivity. McIntosh also confirms that it may be used with suitable high-output Moving Coil cartridges where their output and loading requirements are compatible.

DA1 Digital Audio Module

The MA5300 is supplied with McIntosh's modular DA1 Digital Audio Module, giving the amplifier six digital audio inputs:

One of the MA5300's most useful long-term features is its modular digital architecture. McIntosh's newer DA2 Digital Audio Module can replace the original DA1 through an authorised dealer installation.

The DA2 retains the existing coaxial, optical, USB and MCT connections while adding:

  • 1 x audio-only HDMI ARC input
  • Native DSD support up to DSD512
  • DXD up to 384kHz
  • Next-generation Quad Balanced 8-channel 32-bit DAC

Separate Preamp and Power-Amplifier Sections

Although the MA5300 is an integrated amplifier, McIntosh links its preamplifier and power-amplifier sections using removable rear-panel jumper connectors.

This gives the MA5300 considerably more system flexibility than a typical integrated amplifier. Its preamplifier can feed an external power amplifier, or the MA5300 power stage can be driven from a suitable external preamplifier.

McIntosh Headphone Crossfeed Director, or HXD, can be switched on to introduce controlled crossfeed between the left and right channels, creating a presentation closer to listening through a pair of loudspeakers.

When headphones are connected, the loudspeaker outputs are muted for private listening.

Tone Controls and Source Matching

Bass and treble adjustment provides up to +/-12dB of correction and can be bypassed when not required.

The MA5300 remembers tone settings independently for each input, so one source can be left untouched while another uses a customised setting.

Individual source levels can also be adjusted by +/-6dB in 0.5dB steps, helping maintain a more consistent listening level when switching between components with different output voltages.

Home Cinema and McIntosh System Integration

Home Theater PassThru allows the MA5300 to become part of a compatible multichannel system, using its power-amplifier section for the main left and right loudspeakers while the AV processor controls overall system volume.
